I think the freeze dryer problem stems from the fact it is located in the grow room. There is a ton of moisture in there, plus all the bacteria in the soil. You probably want to move the freeze dryer into the pantry room in the house.
@Taximom

I wondered about that too as that’s one reason we don’t dehydrate in our garage. I don’t have a freeze dryer though, so wondered if it had different needs.
@micheleswain5063

I also wondered if it should be run a couple of times before using it for food, to make sure there's no more mould in the air flow from inaccessible parts of the machine. Possibly using vinegar for the run?

Yesss! I recently moved into a house with no HVAC system. The property is super shaded and we have a few window units and it's not bad at all. However, when it started to get cold I took out the window units and all of a sudden I found myself with a mold problem because of a lack of air circulation. Sometimes you don't know until you know! Watching this definitely made me feel better.

Handy tip: when cleaning mould use the 3 bucket system. 1 bucket for the cleaning agent. The 2nd bucket for the initial rinsing of the cloth. And the 3rd bucket to rinse the cleaning cloth again before you dip it back into the 1st cleaning agent bucket. And throw away the cloths that were used to clean with. Do not wash them. You only end up spreading the mould spores to your washing machine. Also if you are using vinegar, add a few drops of Oil of Clove. It helps to stop the regrowth of mould spores.

@TamingTheWild12
@TamingTheWild12 Год назад
Depends on what you are doing in it. I was told by rep (because I thought same thing save machine and let it just air dry) but the defrost setting actually helps get the "stuff" out of the machine that can grow. Some people just air dry and wipe down but really needs to flush too! Light things like candy probably aren't too bad to just air dry and clean but things like meat, eggs & dairy should probably have defrost run to make sure its getting cleaned out well then cleaned again with vinegar or alcohol. Just sharing what I was told.

Becky, After having my FD for over 4 years now and having done anything you can think of doing in it and having to deal with a lot of explosions of milk and other sugary substances, I made it a habit to clean my FD every time after I do raw meat, eggs or fish in it using the soapy water and then rinsing it out with fresh water. Also, I bought the long flexible brush for the plastic draining tube and clean it every now and then as necessary. I opted not to use vinegar and pouring it down the drainage tube because eventually it will corrode the shut-off valve, and it is a pain to replace. Ask me how I know... If I use vinegar... on a very rear occasion... I immediately pour a lot of fresh water down that tube. Just a few tips from "being there, done that" prospective. You want to do some light wiping every time after the defrost cycle since some food pieces can drop to the bottom and then get some melted water on them... and you don't want any contamination in your food. I have a friend who now works as a tech rep for Harvest Right, he cleans his unit every single time after each use. I am glad you showed the disaster inside, because all of us have to deal with some "real life" gross cleaning. You took it like a champ! ❤

@@tinacarr9498 I wouldn't use vodka, I would use rubbing alcohol. I used diluted IPA (isopropyl alcohol) in the chemical engineering lab to clean and sanitize highly sensitive equipment inside. I recommend rubbing alcohol if anything. 70% rubbing alcohol with no other additives other than IPA and water. But do not use it if you use bleach for anything. Mixing bleach with rubbing alcohol produces a highly toxic chemical.

Hi Becky, from what I've learned over the past 2 years, vinegar is NOT the preferred method for cleaning as it is acidic. Most people tend to use vodka or some type of high proof alcohol. Oh, I guess you do mention that afterwards. Also, some people buy a drain cleaning brush to help clean the drain hose. And it's definitely a good idea to wipe out your machine, especially when changing from something like raw eggs or meat to vegetables and fruit. Hope this helps! Happy freeze drying!

I notice you do this when cooking dinners, which you really should also wait till it comes up to temperature. And don’t forget to lower the baking temperature by 25 degrees when using a glass pan, otherwise cakes and brownies will burn around the edges before cooking in the center.

For resealing - when I seal my bags, I leave some extra room (so the bag is a little too long) then I cut along the sealed edge and then there is plenty of room to just re-seal it. And I feel you with the mold - I HATE mold! And it really grosses me out, too and makes me sick if I smell it. Seems we all deal with it occasionally though. In fact, right now I am getting ready to clean one of our window frames that had a leak during our recent rains. 🤢

When your a mom you have to learn to let somethings go or you will drive yourself crazy. I am very OCD and can’t handle clutter or things being left to the next day. But when I had kids it was getting overwhelming for me. My grandma told me “as long as your house is dirty enough to be lived in but clean enough to be healthy, then you have accomplished what you need to in order to be a good mom and spend quality time with your kids.” She told me, “you got to let somethings go.” The one thing I could not let go was the kitchen. Reason for that was I get up in the morning and if my kitchen is not clean it puts me in a cross mood and the rest of the day will not go well.

This happen3d with our freeze dryer too. My sil used it to do some strawberries. I never thought to tell her to leave the door open afterward. I just about got sick when I saw the mold. When cleaned it the same way and everything was fine, but the first thing I thought was the most expensive appliance I have ever owned is ruined.

Even after the green house you will likely still want/need the grow room. I am not a prolific gardener like you but I do love my greenhouse. It definitely extend the growing season (both spring and autumn) but controlling the temperature during seed starting season would be extremely challenging. That’s my two cents anyway 😉

Each time i watch your video where you work in the grow room, I think ‘Becky should put a laundry sink in that room.’ I notice that you have a hot water tank in there so I’m sure it would not be too difficult, considering Water lines already being out there.

Yep, a nasty mess just like I thought. I’m in the Deep South so I live in humidity almost constantly. We’re having plumbing issues so our dryer is on the back porch. Just like our washing machine, we’ll have to leave the door open longer than most. Thank you for posting this. I’m 100% sure I would have closed it. (Probably still will with my memory..lol) thanks for the reupload Becky! ❤

I really really wanted a freeze dryer but after doing some research I’m glad I never bought one. The negative reviews far outweighed the positive reviews. I’ll stick with my dehydrator and purchasing a few of the freeze dried items I like. But to each his own - I know some people love them. I’ve watched Becky for a few years now and have learned so much from her. She is an inspiration and I absolutely love her. ❤

I've also wanted one BAD, but I too have been scared about the reviews. A lot of people say the food can taste/smell like plastic. Ick. Becky's doesn't seem to have that issue and I've not really done much research yet because of the price! Yikes.

@@JanicePhillips - I’ve also read that Harvest Right has terrible customer service and that you’re pretty much on your own with repairs. Also read the HR freeze dryer components are cheaply made and not made in the USA. I invested in an Excalibur dehydrator a few years ago and although I realize there are some foods I will never dehydrate but would preserve if I had a freeze dryer I’m ok with that. Heidi on her “Rain Country” RU-vid channel did a video on why she doesn’t own a freeze dryer. I completely agree with her. I love my dehydrator. ❤️😀

You do the first ferment then add whatever you want to the second ferment when you bottle it. It can be fruit juice or fresh/frozen fruit. I used to cut fresh ginger into match sticks and add a few to each bottle with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a little bit of honey.

Becky - dry off the inside edges & RE- vacuum seal it. I do that a lot... also part of the reason I make me bags larger than needed for items I wont be using all at once... it leaves enough bag for several openings that way. Lots of people don't, I'm sure, but I also wash & hang dry a lot of my bags & reuse them. Not usually from meats... but it sure saves me $$. Take care - God bless you and yours 🙏🙏🙏
