Jen!! I started doing no oils/no butters about a month before you did and let me tell you, it has been so nice seeing someone else go through the same challenges as me! A few things I learned along the way: 1. Innersense as a brand was a no-no for me (I know, so sad). I tried both the conditioner and the gel and neither gave me the slip or hydration I was looking for, especially since I cut out a leave in conditioner with this method. 2. I went back to using a deep conditioner as my weekly conditioner. I know BGC says you don't need one unless your hair desperately needs repair, but a deep conditioner penetrates more than a regular one, and I can definitely notice on wash days and beyond. 3. I strayed from the recommended products of BGC and focused on ingredient lists instead. BGC does a great job of providing a starting point, but my hair did not mesh well with them and some are pricey! I firmly believe you do not need salon products in order to be successful with this, and I think a lot of misconception comes from potential accessibility issues. I use The Doux No Scrubs shampoo, Not Your Mother's Matcha and Green Apple Deep Conditioner, and African Pride Styling Gel (only $5!). Side note: I do not know what technically constitutes a botanical gel, but African Pride uses aloe and other botanical ingredients that are high on the ingredient list, which I do not see as problematic for my hair. Sorry for the novel, but I have developed such a deep appreciation for my hair over the past 2 month by simply accepting what my 4b/4c (?) hair looks like and having fun with it. Hope this is helpful

You're so right thank you for saying this! I'm on week 2 and I'm having a problem with the gels I gave . I like how my hair looks but not how it feels ! I don't know imma try ufd and see what's going on !! I've been using live clean conditioners, even Pantene nutriblends! The ingredients are so good and silicone free !.

I use a little kinky curly leave in along with uncle Funky's gel and it works better for me that way. I find that the doux shrinks my hair up too much so it only gets use from me lightly when my hair is dry and I'm refreshing it. I use the I create hold for my edges.
@wojlife3190
@wojlife3190 2 года назад
Great video!!! I personally use the doux mousse on its own for wash n go's, but that's because I HATE sitting under the dryer for too long, and the doux mousse dries in like 15-20 minutes on its own. It also gives me more volume than when I use gel (and as someone with low-density hair, I love volume!!), although I sometimes have to restyle midweek.

What’s the climate like where your at? Because where I’m at my hair would laugh 😂 the humidity gets high in the summer where I’m at. I’ve used UFD and the mousse Def combo and it doesn’t hold up on high humidity.
@wojlife3190
@wojlife3190 2 года назад
@@PreppyFay12 Lol I'm in nyc. It's pretty humid here in the summer too, but I also should say, I don't mind my hair becoming more of a fro on the later days of my wash n go. So that's probably why it works for me lol. It only really stays defined for the first 2-3 days. I'm curious to see how it'll hold up in the winter though!

Jen!!! I feel you sis. I also sometimes prepoo with Conditoner that follows the 30 day hair detox before shampooing but only when necessary because I don’t like using more steps than needed. I think the idea is that if your hair is washed and detangled more routinely you’ll have less issues detangling with just the Conditoner step. However life be lifing so sometimes the hair gets tangled up more when doing certain styles or given certain conditions the hair has been through so your not alone!

@michelleej
@michelleej 2 года назад
I’m glad you pre-pooed with the conditioner and twisted your hair, because it really made your wash “hour” a lot more pleasant! That’s a win! I hope other people who are watching your journey who have similar struggles consider this. A lot of people I know who use the Doux for wash and go’s have the desired result of a wash and fro - that will only last a few days. Fo is an exception and she used less UFD, I think. Also, you have to take into consideration people’s curl diameter and surface texture. I don’t think this combo universally gives a great look. I just remembered something I read online about the shampoos. I’m pretty sure I left this comment before, but I can’t help myself LOL! That Ouidad is absolutely more of a clarifying shampoo. Not only because of the primary surfactant in the ingredient list but the color of it. Clear shampoos are typically more clarifying, while white/pearlescent shampoos tend to be more moisturizing. I’m playing around with ratios for UFD + I Create Hold. I’ve only nailed it once and didn’t write down what I did. It seems to be a combo that gives universally good results, but you do have to figure out the ratios that give you the desired result that you want. I heard someone say that letting UFD sit on their hair for about 10 minutes before applying I Create Hold helped with the tangling effect. I also read that using too much I Create Hold and not enough water might result in this. I’ve read several accounts, including a comment below this video, so you’re not alone. I’m still looking into this. One last thing :) If I were you (knowing what I know now), I would go to a dermatologist. I think you probably overcleansed your hair unnecessarily and inadvertently. A dermatologist will be able to help you with your flaky scalp easily. I used to think that flaky scalps were normal, but now I know better.

I am very interested in your journey so far with no oils and butters and love how rich your hair is looking. I'm looking into my ingredients list more now thanks to watching you and LaToya E and as my current products finish, will be replacing them with humectant rich products if I can get them. I used kinky curly’s leavin and uncle funky’s gel for the first time the other day and I LOVED it. Hair feels moisturized and any knots are easy to pull apart and I like the definition and level of elongation I got. Eco styler gave me definition and length, but too crunchy and dry and the tangles killed me. The kinky curly gel is good too. Similar to uncle funky’s but I feel like I have to use wayyy more which isn’t ideal for the wallet.

Jenn I felt similar about the UFD and Mousse Def combo. I liked it for like 2 days and then the humidity took it over. I also felt the “dry feeling” too. My stylist recommended I use the Design essentials curl enhancing mousse instead (the green one) it’s not as defined but my hair has that soft smooth feeling so I’d consult with your stylist first but that’s what I’ve tried abs been recommended for my hair and climate.

I love your vids, Jenn!! Sections are the truth! I shampoo and style in section as well. Just bigger sections. Here are a few tips that could help: Always Deep Condition when you clarify. Wash your hair as soon as it's dry or you just feel like its needs a wash. I usually co-wash my hair every other day or when it starts itching/feels dry. There is no set schedule. Just listen to your hair. :) Taking care of my hair is so freeing now. I also just started putting on a good amount of leave-in conditioner before styling. Game Changer! Ayiti!!! =)

Your hair looks cute. I love when my hair is fresh out of a wash n go, and I love when it gets more full and frizzy 3 or 4 days later. It's like my look changes on it's own, and I just go with it. I love Kinky Curly. Knot Today, and Curling Custard. It retains moisture for me. I have even noticed the shift from being inside, with a/c, to stepping outside with more humidity. My hair looks and feels amazing when this happens. I haven't had much success with The Doux. It doesn't last for me and I want to have my hair last longer than a day or two. Maybe it's a climate thing too!

Look, I feel the wash hour can begin after you section and detangle if it helps you to be able to wash an hour. Styling is totally separate and has it's own time. For that you can set a time on how long you want to spend styling (30 min to an hour for example). I like this detox thing but who says you have to follow the rules to the tee. As long as you're using the right products, eliminating the oils n butters, then it all good. TFS Jenn. Glad it's working for you. One thing I'd suggest is try brushing the the styling products through then use it hands.

I use henna, avid henna girl but it doesn't work on dirty hair so I always clarify when I use it, like I use black soap with added protein to clarify, then use henna. I also add more protein into the henna to really strengthen my hair. What I have noticed is that your hair shrinks more when you clarify your hair, it's light, bouncy and shrinks more even when you use oils and butters, which I do. So if you have 4c hair even with whatever routine you use you will have a fro with slightly more defined ends.

Also I find that I have to spritz my hair with water every day (at least morning and evening), which helps it to keep the moisture and stay softer. If I don't use water, it doesn't stay moisturized for a full 1-2 weeks of a wash-n-go.

I don’t think it’s an ingredient in the product. Speaking specifically about Jen’s experience, If that was the case she would have difficulty with Uncle Funky’s Curly Magic too. I Create Hold has a very thick texture. I’ve read quite a few accounts of this happening. From what I’m reading, it might be an issue of using too much and not enough water, but I’m not positive. Ratios with these products really make a big difference. There’s quite a learning curve. I’m going to ask my stylist if she’s ever encountered this with a client and what she did to remedy it.

I saw you were doing a protective styling challenge before starting this, is your hair in a dehydrated state? If so, I would NOT use the Doux for a wash and go. Mousse Def should not be used on dehydrated hair, nor should ICV (heard stylists saying this but also speaking from my own dehydrated experience lol… detangling was a nightmare for the following 2 weeks. A poor decision!) UFD/ICH is a much better combo if you hair happens to be dehydrated, I would stick with that and find a way to mitigate the tangling (my stylist just uses the Felicia again but there may be other solutions to try like saturation, water/products ratio, temperature, etc.) Can’t wait to see the cut video 😊

Doux is anti-humectant I believe, so blocking out water is its job... that is why it is used as a topper or last gel. When I'm Using something like UFD then topping it with the doux or a mousse, my reasoning is for a more "weightless" look on day 1 while still blocking out humidity. However, if I do something like UFD then top it with ICH, I want a stiff hold (longevity) that has "weight" because of the thickness of ICH. Even then because humidity has been 82% here I then "glaze" my hair with a anti-humectant because the air outside almost reactivated all the humectants in my hair and it feels wet and sticky. I hope that makes sense...

I'm curious: is the point of this method to try another method to see if your hair likes it? Or is this supposed to be somehow healthier than other ways of managing your natural hair? At this juncture, from all of the different videos I've seen, if your hair is not dehydrated, damaged or unhealthy, then it's just a matter of preference regarding how you want your curls/Kinks/coils to look and the method you use to get that look. Let me know if I'm missing something.

The doux doesn't pair well with UFD for me..and I know the ladies from BGCs said they don't love it for most of their clients. For me it applied nicely, but it was too frizzy for day 1 and only lasted a few days

I use the doux between UFD and innersence ICH to give me enough slip to rake and smooth. Without ICH the set wouldn't last as long

I guess hair care isn't a one for all. My daughter doesn't use oil or cream on her hair but she deep conditions with Dove regularly. My hair and scalp needs oils and I only deep condition once a month at the most and my hair is fine. So all this depends on your hair's needs.

omg I feel you on the shape! I kept trying to make my hair look a way but it never comes out right. I can't decide if it will look better once I get a hair cut or if I just need to place it differently. Based on all your videos I feel like your scalp is telling you to wash every 5 days? I know you have a busy life so that might not be feasible, but just a thought. My hair is a fuzzy mess and my scalp itches after 3 days so I've been washing it every 3 days. I am hoping I can get to 7 days eventually! But my hair is much shorter and thinner (less dense) so it's probably easier for me to wash more often. Detangling takes me like 7-9 minutes. I tried mousse then gel then mousse and I got a pretty good set! I think I used too much mousse on the first application because it was very hard but I had a lot of definition! Not gonna lie, I"m not used to being 'stuck' using the same products all the time and I'm trying to figure out at which point I can just try something different. I know they say we have to use UFD and innersense/AG all the time but I don't want to! I like changing things up. I don't use any one product all the time in any other part of my life (except for my body lotion but it's medicated and the only thing that works for me). My face washes and lotions change all the time, I do different sheet masks depending on what my skin is doing or how I feel, I change body washes on the regular, even my allergy meds change all the time. I want to try the Mane choice, TGIN, camille Rose, ect... I miss products that smell really good.... I'm spoiled, I know I'm being a brat lol. Everyone is saying I'm doing the most but I kinda like doing the most? I think I'm going to start mixing things up soon. I want to see what else my hair can do now that I feel like I understand her better. I don't like being boxed in. I even wanted to wash it every day but I kinda got scared because I am trying to grow it long. Most people say we can't but I also know most black people have never tried it so how do we really know?! Anyway love your videos! I didn't mean to unleash my feelings on here. I don't have a lot of people in my life that I can talk to about this, and most people just want to shut me down. Oh well!

Are you a member of See Some Curls? There is a curated list of the products they use in salons. No rules on using any specific product all the time. The purpose of providing specific products is suggesting what they know works on a variety of heads and it takes the guess work out of things for us as consumers. Try away if you like experimenting and you will still have what you know works in your back pocket.

@@lbrandly4388 I am. I’ve been told to stick to the same styling products in there when I talked about trying different things even when I switched to products on the list from products on the list (not by the As just other admins). A couple of other stylists also stated we shouldn’t be switching products but no reason that made sense to me were given. Meanwhile the As said products don’t really matter just consistency and application so it felt like a contradiction. I don’t know if they meant consistency as far as washing regularly or constantly using the same products however.

@@JennJackson Yes, I'm struggling and experimenting as NY is extremely humid. Worked pretty good . ALSO tried the doux,topped with ouidad gel on top,nice combo. I just don't think a mouse can give my 4c hair hold or definition. I have that mouse, but haven't used it to set my wash n go. I've used a little for moisture mid week, but the way your hair turned out is exactly what I would expect from a mouse. Since a mouse has so much air in it, I would expect a fluffy wash n go. Still cute though.

I know you're not necessarily going for length, but girl, come through inches. This way of caring for your hair may be a little challenging for you, but your hair appears to be loving it!❤️ You will most likely get a better understanding of the styling technique and what your hair feels like when you see a stylist, at least that is what I have been seeing for other ladies using BGC hair care practices. I like the definition that your hair gets it is uniquely yours. To me, that is the best thing about a wash-n-go is that we all get our own version of it based on what our individual hair does. Excited to see the stylist visit video.

Hi, Jenn! I enjoy your videos very much. Have you ever tried prepooing/detangling with marshmallow root? @4LifeAfter40 has several helpful videos on it (and there are many other videos about it on RU-vid). She boils her marshmallow root, but you can also make it using a cold infusion. It works brilliantly for detangling and also, of course, is not an oil or butter.

What you said about the application versus the dried product being so different with mousse Def reminds me of my issues with big poppa (their gel). Altho I... Truly disliked that gel lol. I kinda wanna try again and use my hooded dryer but that product felt bad on my hair and had no definition by the time it dried. I'm not having great luck with gels but it was the only one that did that lol. I kept wondering if there was something about my hair that doesn't agree with the product and vice versa

I’m at the point where I only have to prepoo if I do a twist out. If I do a WNG it’s easy breezy. I look to Natural Reign (YT) and What the Kink (YT) for inspiration. They’re straight up about saying that mastering the WNG takes time. Also I’m close to five days between washes. I think seven will be a year from now.
