Loooove my 2019 ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi. This is my third ram with the 6.4 hemi. I towing 6 days a week and 100,000 miles on my first on and 80,000k on my second, and they never let me down. And the 2019 with the new 8 speed and a 4.10 tows better than ever!

What kind of mileage do you get towing with the new truck? I’m guessing after the truck is broken in and if your not at high altitudes you do a bit better than the 9.4 mpg they got.
@toofastnobrakes
@toofastnobrakes 4 года назад
Second Amendment around 9-10mpg but that’s with a 14-15k lbs dump trailer sometimes as low as 8mpg if there are a lot of hills. With my 16ft box trailer “about 7000lbs loaded” I get 12-13mpg. It’s not exactly stellar but a decent improvement over my 2016 with the old six speed Edit: I’m also running 35in tires now

Great video! This brought back so many memories of going over wolf Creek pass traveling back and forth from home in Colorado springs to fort Lewis college. Some advice for you from a native Florida boy and an avid boater,,, change that front cross member on that trailer. When you start to see the rust forming on the outside of the fully boxed cross member, it's already too late, the rust inside is far worse. I've had them fail while driving and it's no fun.

With only 2500 odd miles on the clock I would guess the truck is not even properly run in yet (engine, drivetrain etc) so I expect a better fuel consumption after adding another 10k miles on the unit.

Great video... I’d like to see a channel testing vehicles like this and doing more long distance reviews. Just about any vehicle is great around town, but how does it feel after 6 or 10 hours behind the wheel? Real world application is key to a great buying decision. This is a very similar result to what I saw towing a very loaded 6x12 enclosed Uhaul trailer in a 2018 Ram 2500 crew cab 4x4 when moving from MI to CT( 750 miles.) Unlike your experience, my hemi powered Ram was gutless on the hills. Must be the 8 speed improves the towing experience. Several weeks later I was able to replicate the trip with the diesel and saw 16 mpg with a similar weight load and same trailer set up on the same route.

Diesels are overpriced, overvalued, overrated. Save some money and get a gas engine. They have come a long ways anyway. People don't realize the horsepower is for passing, and a large chunk of the max torque is available in the low rev range. You really need to tow a lot to justify a diesel. That or be rich.

Andre maybe you can confirm what I was told. When I bought my 2014 Ram 2500 6.4L (yes 2014) I was told to take it easy the first 4-5000miles as not to hot-dog and break a new motor. When I took ownership I went from a 1999 Durango with 5.9L Magnum so this felt like a big truck (also a megacab) but it did feel like it had slightly less 'pep' than a similar one I test drove before having this one built for me. I remembered back to what my dealership told me about the 5000 mile engine break in claim and I'll be darn if I wasn't on a road trip when it rolled over - and somewhere around 5000-5100 I noticed it was significantly more responsive. Granted, I'm recalling this from 6 years ago BUT its the same engine (albiet with the 6-speed trans at the time) but every time I watch videos on this engine (new and old trans) and hear the lackluster performance, I wonder...how many miles are on the truck when its being tested - IF - that claim is true. Have you heard anything about this from RAM - or have any thoughts on the matter? Its always bugged me hearing the negativity about the engine when I'm satisfied with mine. I don't heavy tow often, couldn't justify the $$$ for the Cummins, but I feel folks aren't giving it a fair shake if this claim is true. What I do respect is you guys are the first I ever watched, that flat-out stated when a manufacturer posts MAX TOW numbers, its on a specific truck with specific features and unless you have that truck, you have to account for the differences. A 3500 reg cab, diesel work truck will not have the same tow rating as a 3500 crew cab gas engine. I highly respect the fact you point this out where many review sites don't. Thanks for all the information from many years ago and keep up the great work - all of you!
@Josh47147
@Josh47147 4 года назад
Manufacturers put limitations in the computer nowadays, so you can't abuse the warranty or ruin their reputation out of ignorance. Furthermore, if they didn't you would have shitty vehicle because of all the dealership guys who like to hot rod new vehicles when they go to grab lunch for everybody. Ask me how i know. Any break in periods for anything non performance related (NON-SRT), is usually transmission related these days, not so much engine wise.

My 2014 RAM 3500 with the 6.4L and 4.10 gears would get 10 - 11 MPG towing a 7000 pound travel trailer, 4 people, and a bed full of gear. Of course, I used the CORRECT grade of fuel. The fuel economy results frustrates me a little since the truck is not operating in an optimal state by using low grade fuel. Yes, altitude has an affect here but 86 octane is still too low at their altitude for a vehicle that recommends 89 or higher grade fuel. It will work fine in place of 87 octane at higher altitude but I can't help think that truck would have done better to use a slightly higher octane fuel. Maybe try the same loop again but with the recommended fuel. It would be interesting to see if it really does have an impact on fuel economy.

@@amolinari9 thats a possibility, you should see an improvment after 3,000+ miles. But there is alot that goes into your mpg. But i dont inverst alot of faith in the advertised mpg. Its may be close to what you get but it be north or south of it by far. The 392 barely gets 10 without anything behind it. Personally I love my 2018 Power Wagon because even when you put a lot of weight behind it the mpg doesn't really drop. it's just always bad. But it will pull anything you want it to with relative ease.

@@hellkitty1014 Yeah I agree. But the motor is the same except it has the 6 speed auto which even it is a really nice transmission. Not nearly as good as the 8 speed that our 1500 has but It's still really nice. I was just making a statement about the motor anyway. Which my point still stands, it will pull a shit ton and no matter what you put behind it the MPG barely drops.

So, you got about 2 mpg better so if you both did a 500 mile trip, Andre would've bought 52.6 gallons of gas and you would buy 43.47 gallons. In the midwest gas is $2 so you beat Andre by about $22. Since he just changed the oil at 9500 miles, it might not be broke in yet either. I'll take the Ram 2500.

Todd Gibbs at elevation, all fuel grades are decreased in states like Colorado due to difference in performance of elevation. Where low level states have 87 as the low grade, we have 85, where states have 89 we have 87. The manual only recommends a fuel grade in this case, it is not a requirement. Many vehicles in Colorado that are high mileage that have been run this way...

I sold my 2500 Laramie 6.4 for a Tradesman 6.7 diesel for #1 the Hemi at 100K miles will be worth about less than 40% of new MSRP. #2 limited payload and towing for a 5th wheel (weak payload was rated at 3K but snagged badly at 3K) #3 have seen 6.4 engine have many top end engine problems with cam phasers and valve train - even new engines at 30K miles. 2020 Ram 3500 diesel is more expensive to own for sure but - # rated for 4500 pounds payload and 20k towing. #2 at 100k miles will have +60% value still of MSRP (holds value for resale better than gas engine #3 drive ability when towing is way better and MPG both loaded and unloaded is better than gas. The diesel truck will appeal to resale market much better than a 3/4 ton gas truck.

Go spit on Abraham Lincoln's grave yea from what I’ve seen on motors the more easily it flows air the less low end torque you get, so maybe they should keep the hemis in the halftons and muscle cars.

I liked the 7.3 until I read the ford forums. Numerous have reported problems and some even being stranded and had to have the truck towed. I’d wait until they get the kinks worked out. But then the super duties still have the infamous death wobble which ford hasn’t resolved yet due to faulty/junk front end parts.
@MichaelFletcher-to7mm
@MichaelFletcher-to7mm 4 года назад
Barry Hussein Soetoro I’m sure the 7.3 has problems but I’d still buy one, I have pretty decent luck with trucks I’ve got a 2010 f150 with 315k miles and it still runs great, and if I was worried about death wobble I’d just get the alignment specs that powerstroke help found to solve the problem.
@barrysoetoro3488
@barrysoetoro3488 4 года назад
Spartan 0703 I hear ya. But the problem is not the alignment it is faulty steering stabilizer shaft made in China (ford vendor). Absolutely zero fix from ford. If you go aftermarket and spend some $$$$ you can resolve it, but you shouldn’t have to when you spend the outrageous money these things cost. My 2018 250 power stroke started at 11k miles, terrible experience.

I disagree about the radio. The old radio is like listening to the past if you find the right station. I suppose in a Ford you'd need a radio to keep the dull noise out. In a Dodge, you don't need a radio cause the engine sounds good...and the buttons are probably stuck and power was stole from the radio for the wipers
