I Took an Autonomous Taxi in China (But is it SAFE?) 你敢坐吗？

I went to the city of Guangzhou, in Guangdong Province, to hail an autonomous, driverless robotaxi. Driverless vehicles have become a common sight in Guangzhou, and it's one of the best places to experience being in a driverless car whilst riding through traffic.
I've previously taken a ride on an autonomous bus run, part of the WeRide fleet, also in Guangzhou. But I've never been in a driverless taxi. The autonomous taxi I hailed was part of the Baidu Apollo fleet, and the model that turned up was a Hongqi E-HS3 model! I've also never been inside a Hongqi car before, so this was a double first for me!
What happened when a bus pulled out on us? And what happened when another car cut us up at the traffic lights?
And what happened when I arrived at my destination, which also happened to be the site of China's SPACE BREEDING PROGRAM!

I believe the reason why there is someone behind the wheel is because the reliability and safety of self-driving has yet to reach a stage where it should be. Every time a self-driving car hit the road, it is actually undergoing a trial run and the more data are gathered, the better the system will be. Things will get better and better and perhaps, the day we can totally trust and rely on self-driving cars will become a reality soon.

Stu, thanks for sharing your travel experience in China and i can show them to my friends in Australia who haven't benn to China before. And they got way to much of one side story from social media here. I am looking forward to coming back to hometown Guanddong this year and try this taxi by myself. They are absolutely cool. BTW, you subscribers are much lower than other RU-vidr but your video views are more than 16mils. Definitely It proves something to me and others.

Though the trip back to Earth would be very costly, I'm sure people could grow record sized pumpkins in space that would dwarf any grown on Earth's surface! I like the idea of having a safety driver, too, in a self--driving vehicle

In Beijing, you could actually select if you want a safety driver or not. I guess in Guangzhou, the government is more cautious?

There's only one area in Beijing where you can use them though. It's quite far from the centre.

They should redesign the autonomous taxi, if the passenger seat is not allowed to sit. Free the space for some other functions.

I'm excited for autonomous vehicles because I hate driving after about 20 minutes. 😆 Also, I'm excited to see China rolling out humanoid robots in the near future. By 2025 they said they will mass produce them. I think in the future, they should put a kill switch in the back seat for the passenger. Just in case they feel like something has gone wrong, the car will come to a safe stop and put on it's emergency lights.

Recently I've seen a video of someone taking driveless taxi in China, probably Shanghai IIRC, without any human driver/assistant. Everything was automated. And it worked. So here the Chinese are ahead of rest of the world already. They innovate and implement new tech at very high rate, second to none.

中国2024年全面放开无人自动驾驶。也就是中国在2024年自动驾驶可以不需要安全员了，但是乘客是不允许在司机的位置的，也就是就算没有安全员，车内也只能坐三个人。中国已经有没有放向盘和刹车控制的车辆了，主要用于城市交通的士！也就是可以坐四个人的，没有司机位的车辆。

自动驾驶出租车我感觉对乘客的意义不大啊，目前来说可能试验意义大于实际意义，就像无人超市一样，里面没有工作人员并不能给顾客带来什么，反而还啥都要自己动手

不是，这个是有公司在做无人驾驶测试，再加国家法律还没有完全放开自动驾驶。今年或者明年一季度左右应该就会出相关法律了，已经在社会上讨论跟调研了一段时间。

In Western Economies Tesla is actually very ahead and is the only one pushing for robotaxi. No other car company is in this market so Tesla has the full pie. Don’t bet against Elon.

Sorry, 我不敢 , not a pure AI driver without a human safety officer anyway. Being an engineer myself, I know how Mr. ( or Ms.) Murphy is always on the payroll; things can break, and software glitch can happen unexpectedly. My human bias perhaps.
