Great photos and video!!! What was the tracking like??? I guess it was awesome. I get my camera this week, I can't wait to use it on nesting birds!!! So I guess I would like to see you do more bird action if possible!!!👍👍👍
Thanks Marvin! The tracking is insane, when the settings I’ve gone through I haven’t had any major issues that have stopped me from getting the photo I want. I’m hoping to get a teleconverter very soon, once I have that i’ll be out with the birds. Just need to find the spare money for it! Thanks for watching!
I don’t think responsive af means it’s faster it’s just faster to change to the next subject is my understanding. I think locked on holds your subject even if someone else goes in front for a moment
Great video 👍 I had the opportunity twice a couple of seasons ago to shoot Panthers games at the arena when LCE partnered up with Olympus and got behind the scenes access plus in the box between the benches, which was scary! Shooting behind the glass is tough with all of the scratches and reflections though so you did a good job! When I shot with the loaned equipment (Olympus E-M1 MK2 and 40-150 f2.8) I found 1/1000 f2.8 1600 worked for me to freeze the action enough.
I'm very jealous! But yeah, I can imagine hahaha, been hit by a puck a few times when I've been at games, I sit right behind the benches where there's no glass! Yeah, I found myself at around the 1/1000 - 1/1250 mark at f2.8 but seemed to need to push my ISO further than the 1600 which you got. But hey, still a great experience! Hopefully I'll get the chance to do it at a Panthers game one day, preferably in a season when they've learnt how to play hockey... -_- Thanks for watching Jez!
When it’s photos, honestly i’ve never noticed a problem as long as i’m using a mechanical shutter. Whatever you do, don’t use electronic 😂 there’s a video on here that I made to explain and give examples of exactly this. I’ve done sport, dog agility, wildlife like birds flying through the air - never had a problem. If you ever do any filming, expect some rolling shutter. 8k is unusable due to the rolling shutter unless it’s a stationary subject. 4k is acceptable. Not much different to what you’d expect from some TV broadcast cameras
great video and fortuitous as i have just upgraded to the r5 and have got the chance again to shoot the nottingham uni ice hockey battle they have every year, so the settings should help :) hopefully i will get better access to get in close :) we shall see
nice pictures. with a7r5 and face recognition, can we leave the center fix on body ? with a74 we must locate it on face square otherwise it focuses somewhere else where the focus point is
So with face recog you need to have the face within the focus area, so for photos like this I’ll use a mixture of tracking wide and tracking centre. I really like using tracking centre most of the time but it’s obviously less forgiving. If your subjects body/face moves too far away from centre it will stop tracking and look for a new subject
I'm about to buy one Danny. Ive thought about it long and hard because its an expensive purchase. Here in the UK its now £3000 on the grey market, the A74 is £1850, so £1150 difference. But Im getting the Tamron 20 -40 with it and my logic is I can get 60mm at 30mp - so like an extra lens. I love the rear screen (I hate the flip out screens) Plus I watched Manny Ortiz and Taylor Jackson videos that they said the AWB and Auto ISO is definitely useable for the first time on a Sony camera in their opinion. I wont shoot full res but medium RAW, which there seems to be little down side to. Im nervous if Im going to like it tho, as Im a Nikon shooter, and love nikon files. But I did watch another guy in a high rise carpark moving from tungsten light to LED light to daylight and the auto white balance was brilliant - so helpful fo quick social media work.
Hey Mark, I do think the shift will be interesting for you. I've never really used Nikon, had a play with one but that's at far as my knowledge with the cameras go. I'm not sure whether you'll find it challenging or really straight forward but I'm almost certain once you get in the groove for Sony, you'll enjoy it. It's hard switching systems, it's one of the big reasons I've never done it. When you're so invested in one company, moving to another brand is not only terrifying but you also need to consider the lens choice. Shooting at 30mp is still plenty and you could easily go down further and shoot at a quarter of the sensor size and still be happy. I don't normally shoot auto ISO or auto WB (and when I do shoot auto WB I always check it in Lightroom or Premiere) so can't comment. I was pretty impressed by the s3 so if they are saying the R5 Is better then yeah... that's insane! The grey market is where I got my A7Siii from, I'll never hide that! Cameras are expensive! My business parted from the weddings has just ordered the A7Rv from Panamoz too I believe, it's a huge saving over what I paid!

Late to the the show but I have to ask how was the rolling shutter. I like this camera for the autofocus but from what I hear the rolling shutter makes it questionable. I do mostly wedding videography and portrait photography but I just go a job shooting baseball and basketball. I am torn between this and the far more expensive A1.
Never too late mate! So, for photography i’ve never had a problem that is noticeable. As long as you use a mechanical shutter you’re fine. There may be slight rolling shutter but nothing i’ve noticed. For video, in 4k there’s rolling shutter, it’s noticable, it’s not great but also no worse than cameras like the a7iv. Did a comparison a few weeks ago and i was shocked. The A7Rv has less rolling shutter in video than the A7iv
@@DannyBligh that’s wild. I’ve never noticed the rolling shutter on my a7iv. It makes me want to lean more towards the a7rv cost is less, wild amount of megapixels, great autofocus. Plus I’m used to the 4K 60 crop. The A1 keeps pulling me back with the 4K 120 and the no crop 4K60 but so much more expensive. Your hockey and boxing videos first got me looking more seriously at the rV. Thanks for the info.
@@jpmcgreg we did consider getting an A1 for the wedding business but imo it’s in need of an upgrade. Still a great camera but for me the A7Rv is just right. Do what your guts telling you, what I say may not fit for you. But happy to provide real world answers to anybody

@@jpmcgregi’ve seen TV shows filmed with a worse rolling shutter. The 8K is horrific, i’d never use it for anything other than a static shot with limited movement in frame. A talking head shot would be fine. But 4k, 1080, it’s fine. It’s not a dedicated video camera, it’s a hugely photography orientated camera with the capability of some video stuff. It’ll never be on par with cameras such as the A7S line or a global shutter camera. Thanks for watching, thanks for the kind words. Means a lot
@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx the 70-200 v2 would be better for sure, but I barely use my current 70-200 😂 i’ll pass on buying another for the time being. I had the 100-400 with me but due to it being f4.5 minimum (and not having the best place for photography and shooting through the glass from far back) my iso was so damn high 👎🏻 but yeah, i get ya! ✌🏻 definitely want to do it again so i’ll try and stick with the 100-400 and see what the results are like
I'm curious if you tried having your exposure to -1, I find when I shoot darker I can pull back on the shadows in post. So I either bump my shutter or reduce my iso. I agree if you had better seats that you would have gotten tighter shots and reduced the ISO.
