I think the problem is, and no one addresses this. Crossfit competing is a completely different idea than Crossfit training for the regular person. I personally enjoy training Crossfit, but there are people who take the whole thing too serious and try to train like competitors. I don't think that's healthy. But a well rounded mix between endurance and strength training for me is amazing and makes me and my body feel good.
@myazepeda

It’s not healthy but that’s the point of a sport. Train and kill your body to compete and win. It’s like all sports. I learned that through rowing for a crew team

Every sport sucks in the competing part. I do Judo... Trying to get into the National Team and be the best in my weight category. Well to do that I've been training with injuries for months. Competition is not healthy at all

That is so true. Ben said "It seems like they are more focused on finishing faster than everyone else than actually performing strict form", but isn't that literally what competitions are for? I've yet to see an olympic lifter tap out of competition because they are worried that the next lift might not be with perfect form :D

Another great thing with crossfit is scaling, they have a beginner, intermediate and RX (prescribed). You don't have to do the RX if you are just starting out and the trainers will help you find the right balance. I joined in October with a friends encouragement otherwise I never would have, believing you have to be fit (just look at the 'crossfitters'), it's too hard etc. It is hard, but hard to my fitness level and every week I've seen improvements in my strength and cardio endurance. All the members are nice and encouraging too. I definitely recommend it for everyone.

I love that you bust some of the myths surrounding the sport :) I was fairly sporty when I started and immediately got confronted with all the things I can't do, because I lack either the strength, the mobility, or both XD However, CrossFit truly is for everybody and a good coach can scale it all down for you. In the end, when training and sensibly and with enough knowledge/good coaches, CrossFit makes you strong, fit and healthy and has a positive impact on your everyday life as well as mental health. Love it

I used to be a CrossFit hater for years, always trained the more traditional route of strength training followed by some form of cardio. I recently got accepted into a fire academy and had to start training CrossFit to prepare for what we’re going to be doing.. and I’m probably never going back. It is by far the most beneficial form of exercise I’ve ever done. It’s very hard, but it pushes you beyond your limits. I gained more functional strength in 3 months than I did the entire prior year. It’s the real deal.

For me personally is form before anything else, and also listening to my body, some days are easier than others, it's a matter of balance. Crossfit is what you make of it. Some people are hardcore and their life is wrapped around it. Others do it casually. I'm 47 years old and I go three days a week and do push it during those days. The Gym I go to tends to be less hardcore than others. There are some really fit people there but they mingle with and work with the average joes too. There's a big emphasis on safety, stretching, warm up, and cool down. What I appreciate most about CrossFit is the structure. Hour long sessions, defined plans, data about your past performance, etc. Seven years into it and I'm still getting personal records. I'm stronger and more flexible than I've been in my entire life. I have pushed it too hard on two occasions which made me ill but other than that no injuries aside from scraped shins from box jumps. Without a doubt, CrossFit has helped me avoid common injuries for people in their 40s due to strength and flexibility.

Really enjoyed the video Ben. There is the old saying "everything in moderation" but, if you want to achieve extreme things you have to do extreme things. So it depends what level of fitness you want to achieve. One of the other commenters put it well by saying it depends how you scale it to suit the individual which is spot on. In principle though I really like the idea of cross fit. A circuit of a variety of exercises combining strength and cardio to whatever extent you want to push yourself.👍💪

such a good video and a lot of misconceptions about crossfit by the general public that have never tried it. i've gone to a box and heard of a few boxes where they say you're joining a "beginner" class first day or just throw you into a class without doing fundamentals and that's already a red flag and a bad box, run away. one i ended up joining was about a week of 1-1 pt/fundamentals, checking technique of deadlifts, squats, olympic lifts, gymnastics lifts, core, cardio and some basic body weight wods to get a feel and prepare me for it and honestly agree with this video, even at the start say 20 mins after a workout you feel refreshed, energized, was fine for the next days wod and the community was great too. you don't have to compete or go crazy like games athletes, dont need to hit prs every day

This is a very advanced 30 days workout for anyone out there reading this . It is okay you won’t be able to do a muscle up right off the bat, or a single leg squat , or a muscle snatch with 25 lbs plates on either side ….. those take time . This video is only from an athletes point starting a 30 day challenge . Not an average Joe .

Being a CrossFit dude for almost a year now with a year a traditionnal fitness prior, the most precious lesson I learned is how to manage your energy. If you go to fast to quick you're gonna burn yourself out and hit the wall after 5 minutes. That's even more important when you mix intense cardio exercices like the assault bike or burpees with weightlifting moves such as deadlifts or snatches.Sometimes you have to be mindfully slower on the cardio part just to have enough energy to lift the barbell properly with the minimum of breaks between reps.
@rudbin1403
@rudbin1403 Год назад
Why don't you just lift the barbell properly... With challenging weight. THEN do your cardio after? It's mind boggling why anyone would want to combine deadlifts with cardio. It just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I recently started crossfit as a way to get fitter and injury prevention...Most important...Start slow and every time you do a new movement, don't load the barbell, keeps weights manageable, feel in control. Do not compare yourself to someone doing crossfit for a 1 year plus
@mattpatt199
@mattpatt199 2 года назад
I found with crossfit if you can manage form and ego, you should be fine. It's also important how the box or instructor actually structure the week. I went to one crossfit box where we did 1 rep max deadlift PBs on the monday followed by a WOD, then on the tuesday the WOD involved high volumes of deadlifts for time. Needles to say i opted out and was smart about it. As for most things it's jst common sense.
@ErikDerElektriker
@ErikDerElektriker 2 года назад
@@chachacamel maybe its a weird question but why did you start the sport for injury prevention with one of the highest risks of getting injured?
@chachacamel
@chachacamel 2 года назад
@@ErikDerElektriker short answer…because barbell movements are the basic and best all body exercises that can pretty much only be performed well using the correct muscles. And I have and had injuries in the past from bio mechanical imbalances which if I fix in the long term will reduce my injuries and stabilize my joints. Long answer… At a regular gym good luck getting to a barbell and trying to do cleans for example. At CrossFit The coaches are always there if I have a question to look at my form and they walk around and correct those who are new or need help. Sometimes they take a quick video of me so I can see myself how I’m doing the movement. There are no egos at my gym and no single rep PR days as the comment above me stated. Every time I don’t feel comfortable with a new exercise I keep the weight really low (like I could do double the reps asked or more) until I feel like I got the exercise right. I also do Vinyasa yoga as a complimentary exercise to also increase strength and flexibility. Basically when I’m in doubt I lower the weight and increase my rep count. We use barbells maybe once or twice a week. Rest of the time it’s functional type of body weight exercises. I started both 3 months ago and I already feel great benefits, AKA lack of pain and increase in mobility

This was a good informative video, because people do give crossfit a bad rap because of the bad reps, but this shows all the benefits of crossfit, and also if you have a half decent instructor they will let you do strict pullups, even if you cant do ten in a row, many would actually encourage that you do strict pullups with a band instead of trying to do kipping pullups. I personally feel that the training style of crossfit is better for realworld applications because of the combination of running while lifting. because if you are at work and you have a labor intensive job, an easy example would be moving sandbags, you cant move some and then take a break until your heartrate settles and then move some more, you will be constantly pushing. or as training for athletes, I race dirtbikes and i found the training style usefull, because i am pushing hard on my dirtbike hitting bumps and stuff which requires high muscle outputs while my heartrate has been elevated for long periods of time (a hare and hound being over 3 hours, at near max heart rate). The military even sees these benefits, they dont call it crossfit, but tale a look at the marine combat fitness test, they combine sprints with fireman's carry with ammo can lifts, with minimal break in between.

I think it's also important to mention that most Crossfitters learn that you can't go out too hot. Programming usually calls for a max heart rate or X amount of rounds *Sustained Pace*. That means you have to be able to assess your own fitness level and at what Intensity you can go to survive 5-6 rounds without puking your guts out hahahahah

Honestly kind of over this narrative that Crossfiters get the most injuries. If you look into Athletes across all types of professional or high performance level sport you see more injuries than you would among your normal person who does fitness. And even then I can't think of many who haven't experienced injury at some point. Just a few days ago Jeff Nippard posted about his back injury, Georgia Ellenwood tore her Achilles during competition, Flora Beverley had to Nurse an Injury after a tough Trail Race. The amount of torn ACLs, Ankle Injuries, herniated discs we see with Soccer Players, Track and Field Athletes, etc is also not to be ignored. In fact, the injury rate from CF was ~23% lower than in Track and Field athletes. Mat Fraser, was arguably the fittest man on earth until he retired from Competition was out of Competitive Weightlifting for over a year before he even started Crossfit. Of course such a high intensity shouldn't be done without at least one rest day per week. Plus recovery should be a priority obviously but I haven't seen many Crossfitters (no matter what level they're at) not looking after that. Can't say the same for the usual Gym Rat as being stressed, severely addicted to caffeine and experiencing continuous low back pain is very normalized (No hate btw lmao I am one of these Gym Rats)

The way CrossFit exercises are performed is very dangerous, yet I have tried a safe version of CrossFit workouts with a combination of regular body-building workouts, and it felt great. Most body-building exercises tend to be static, slow, and heavy, which could get overwhelming in the long run, so adding 1 or 2 days in the week of this combined workout worked well for me.

Everything is monitored by trainer and trainers change exercises, because they - themself say that some of those mixtures are dangerous. So basically when you first time appear in crossfit, we have at least 6 months of training called "crossfit-lite" and if you pass an exam, (not everybody pass it btw), that means you fully understand how each exercise is done correctly and when you should stop, before injure yourself. After that you go to crossfit trainings and there are 9 levels determined by color and difficulty. Each half year you can fight for your rank and climb up. So it really depends on the gym and how they care about their clients. After all, if you want, you can go to competitions and go to events, but only few people does it. btw. if it's lockdown or something they provide application where each exercise is shown in video and how to do it. So you can basically do it alone.

I love the idea of crossfit, I just wish they would emphasize safety. It's great that that gym trained you one on one first to work on proper form, but that's probably the only gym that does that!

Thank you so much for making this video, Crossfit is fantastic! And the people that is always talking bad about should just be quiet. The people in the box is always happy to help, and they always help in a positive way. And for people who thinks it's competitve, it is. But you only compete with yourself when you'r doing a wod or a amrap. Try it! you'll be happier than ever :D

A few questions, since it kind of goes against some of the usual bodybuilding lessons I learned: 1. It still seems to be more important to do it fast instead of right. How does it result in more strength? I thought a good form during weightlifting was very important. 2. Is there some sort of specific CrossFit regiment someone should follow? Any recommendations? 3. I still don't understand the point of those pull-up swings. Looks like you're trying to maximize damaging yourself.

1: whenever I did poor form on an exercise the coach would call me out on it and I would have to either do a regression (easier version) or I would have to slow down. In competition it would be called a “no rep” so there is high incentive to do proper form. 2: each gym sets their own regiment and at the start of every week we can see what the workouts are from Mon to sun. You can also find some online. 3: Think of them as a completely different exercise to pull-ups. Just like you have strict and kipping muscle up. They serve a different purpose, they require way more cardio endurance/coordination and mobility. We also use strict pull-ups in many workouts too.

3. The easiest and most exact way to answer this question is to ask the opposite. How do you regulate a strict form pull-up in a competition setting? You've seen "strict" pull-up competitions before. They're idiotic. Someone's always kicking their feet a little; not going all the way down, swaying their hips a little etc. Kick kick kicking their little feet to get that last rep. How do you regulate how much foot kicking or hip swaying is allowed? You can not measure it. Someone may sway their hips ever so so so slightly. Is that allowed? Where do you draw the line. It's subjective. Your "strict" pull up competition would become a competition in who is the best at hiding their leg kips and hip sway. That's dumb. It'd look dumb. And you'd have endless idiots arguing over how "that one guy was slightly swaying his hips but the judges didn't call it." "oh they came down to fast and bounced at the bottom" "that guy is moving his feet too much" "his elbows are locked but they'd not behind his ears" "their grip is too wide" The world record video for most pullups done in a minute is full of comments saying it doesn't count. Every video on that topic is like that. You simply can not reach a measurable, repeatable, scalable consensus on how to regulate "strict" reps. The answer is you don't. You say it's all allowed. You break down the pullup into it's 2 most important parameters. 1) the bottom position and 2) the top position. Do whatever the hell you want in-between. That's the only way to ensure a level playing field. That is the only way to ensure no one's gaining a advantage by kicking their feet a teeny tiny bit, or swaying their hips ever so slightly. You can't cheat. Breaking movements into their core parameters is what allows crossfit to be a scalable and measurable system of fitness. Its success and popularity isn't an accident. They created a system of fitness that is repeatable and scalable to enormous groups of people with out error. Repeatable. Measurable. Scalable. Objective.

@@cheeriosaltcream To be fair, the whole idea of strict is to not have any slight adjustments allowed. Perfect upwards vertical motion with 0 backwards or forwards movement what so ever or no rep. But I do get why the kipping is more logical in a time-competitive sense. Furthermore, you cannot push stricts. 2 rounds further and u won't be able to do them perfectly strict anymore.
@BallisticTech

CrossFit does strict pull ups as well. Most good gyms and coaches will recommend athletes work on strict strength and form and not try kipping until they have a good set of strict pull ups. Yesterday in preparation for the Murph workout I did AMRAP (As many rounds as possible): 5 strict pullups (some ppl did 20# weighted strict pullups) 10 push ups (I did deficit push ups) 15 air squats (I did elevated heel air squats because I need to improve my mobility) I got through 12 rounds. That's 60 strict pullups in a workout. Something I'd never be able to do 3 years ago when I started CrossFit. In the real workout I'll do kipping pullups. 100 of them total. The goal of kipping pullups isn't, strictly, to build strict pull up strength. It's to do a certain amount of work (going from dead hang to chin over bar) either in a set amount of time, or as fast as possible. Ideally with good form. They are much more strenuous in terms of Cardio and muscular endurance. And I have to say after doing kipping pullups your lats will be very fatigued. They will likely get stronger. Supplemented with strict work strength will be gained. Every exercise movement can result in injury if done incorrectly or too much. Every workout with kipping pullups my coaches warm us up and talk to us about scaling options. We stretch our arms/shoulders, do scap pullups, small kips, strict pullups, many times some ring rows and complementary dumbbell work. Warmed up properly and executed with good form I've had little problems over 3 years doing kipping pullups, bar muscle ups, and ring muscle ups.

1. A common misconception is that crossfiters just try to do everything as fast as they can, but that's not correct. Sure, in a competition if you can do 3 reps while the other guys can only do 1 or 2 you get out on front, but not every workout is about volume. Some are about strenght, some are about resistance. But since you usually have a time cap and there's a natural air of competition (not only with other people, but with yourself) you end up trying to push harder to squeeze a few more reps. It doesn't mean you should just do a movement without thinking form though, and good coaches will always call you out when you're trying to press for more reps by sacrificing good form. But it's not unusual for the later reps in a workout to seem a lot uglier than when you started since muscle fatigue disrupts your form, but even in the gym if you're lifting until the point of failure your last lifts are gonna seem pretty bad too. But to sum it up, no you shouldn't sacrifice form just to finish a workout faster and a good coach will call you out on that, but part of the fun in crossfit is trying to push yourself harder and not halfass it, so you HAVE to feel like you gave it your all, you should try to push your body to the limit where your form can still handle. 2. There are some pre built workouts that you can try and they are a lot of fun, but usually each Crossfit gym will do their own workouts too. It's important, however, to keep in mind that nobody should start Crossfit by doing the standard athlete's workout. You need to learn the movements, have better form and increase your overall fitness before trying for an RX workout, which is the standard. For instance, a Handstand push up is a more advanced movement, so if that's in your workout and you just started you SHOULD NOT try to halfass it, and your coach may switch it to a light bar or dumbell press or another movement that engages similar muscles but are safer and easier for people who just started. But overall your Crossfit gym will set your workouts and training protocols. Also I highly encourage you to do this as a group activity, since part of the charm of crossfit is that it's a community experience and people will cheer you on and encourage you to go further. 3. What happens is that people see butterfly pull ups and they think about strict pull ups, but they are actually very different in nature. A strict pull up will demand power and strenght and will burn you really fast after just a few sets; the butterfly pull ups, however, are more about endurance. While the movement doesn't make you engage your arms, pecs and lats as much as a strict pull up, you need to keep your body moving up and down the bar and that's very demanding. So if you have a workout with strict pull ups you usually have a lot less reps and will focus on strenght, while workouts that will allow you to use a butterfly pull up will have a lot more volume and will usually be about endurance. You probably won't be able to do a 5 round workout with 20 reps of strict pull ups each, because that's 100 movements and your strenght will probably fail way before the end even though you're not necessarily tired, but it's perfectly doable if you're doing keeping or butterfly pull ups, but you won't feel your strenght fail as much as you'll feel an overall fatigue of moving constantly up and down the bar, and that's really the point. The butterfly pull up is not about building strenght, although every good coach will tell you (and teach you) that you should learn how to do strict pull ups before trying to do butterfly pull ups. But since the crossfit competitions are usually more about volume (because it's more entertaining), you'll usually see athletes doing butterfly pull ups instead of strict pull ups. And a last note about injuries: crossfit is more like a sport than a normal gym workout. And in every sport when you're pushing your body you risk injuring yourself. You can injure yourself playing football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, even tenis and reportedly the overall injuries of every single one of these are higher than crossfit, but since people think "gym" instead of "football" when they think of crossfit they tend to see it as dangerous. Well, no one thinks soccer is dangerous, but statics shows that you're more likely to injure yourself playing soccer than doing crossfit. Part of the reason crossfit got a bad rep is bad coaches. Your coach should care for you, he should care if you're thinking form before volume, if you're doing the movements right, if you're trying to push heavier weights than your body can handle and if you're feeling pain or are injured. When they don't...that's where the crossfit fail videos come from. Now even if your coach is really good that doesn't mean you can't get injured, but it's as likely to happen as it would if you were playing basketball with your friends every day, even less so. So don't be afraid to try it out. I've done Crossfit for over five years and had a minor shoulder pain once, but I've injured myself in similar ways just going to the gym. Whenever you make a body acitivty you risk getting injured. That shouldn't discourage you.

The pistol squats require improvement at 8:40. I believe the issue is that nobody talks about it. Crossfit training for the average individual is entirely different from Crossfit competition. Although I personally like doing Crossfit workouts, some individuals take the sport too seriously and attempt to train like competitors. That, in my opinion, is unhealthy. But for me, a well-balanced blend of strength and endurance training is excellent and feels great on both my body and myself.

I do think genetics plays a huge part when it comes to getting fit. There are people who have to sweat and grind it out day after day after day to achieve any positive results. Meanwhile there are people who barely go to the gym and when you see them, you'd think they lived at the gym.

I dont think its genetics, just programming. If you're training constantly and consistently without results, the way you're training is likely wrong.
