There are many variations of sweet and sour pork in chinese cuisine, they visited a Sichuan restaurant and it's obvious what they got is a sichuan version. The other one in red with peppers and pineapple is the cantonese style which is more famous in the southern part of China.

Yes, as a Chinese I prefer the southern style with sweet pepper and pineapple,porked fried and covered with sweet and sour tomato based sauce. IMO It focuses more on the sweet flavor and crispy batter, and has no soy sauce, so it looks brighter and better than the Sichuan style. In China we call it 咕咾肉。

Yea! That's exactly what i wanted to comment!! I prefer the Canton style 咕咾肉 than the sichuan style (vinegar smell is too strong for me)

I am Chinese. They are actually two different dishes: Tang cu li ji 糖醋里脊& gu lao rou菠萝咕咾肉. Both of them are sweet and sour, but in very different way. The former gets its flavor from vinegar and sugar, whereas the latter from tomato sauce and probably pineapples. So the english names are confusing foreigners.

i think that the sweet and sour pork in the US or just out of china in general is their take on 咕咾肉. im chinese but live in sg and our sweet and sour pork is more similar to 咕咾肉. however, once in a while we do have the 糖醋里脊 but at authentic chinese restaurants. i guess 咕咾肉 is just easier to make

As someone that has eaten sweet and sour pork very often (having grown up in South East Asia), I was very confused as to why 'American Sweet and Sour Pork' was described as an interpretation while the Sichuan style was described as authentic. The 'American' style is basically a Cantonese style sweet and sour pork, and yes, it's sweet. China is as diverse in its cuisine as India. No, it is not an interpretation, it's a different style entirely but just as authentic.

@christopheryoeurng3722 5 лет назад
@@JCosio-bs9xr I agree that having separate cultural identities is important, but we also share many aspects of our culture and language. Having a unifying channel would be good because it not only gives insight on *real* Asian culture for other ethnicities, but it could also provide good Asian role models for children that didn't really used to exist. Role models that are more the average-andrew (get it? Spin off of the average Joe 😂) type of person because of how many kids watch RU-vid now

Christopher Adam you’re thinking of Asians like the Chinese, the Japanese, the Koreans. Japanese and Chinese have similarities in language, but their dishes are all very different. There are also other branches of ‘Asian’, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia... some of these cultures are similar, but you can’t just generalize them with the single word.

Also please continue to share dishes from other cultures. well technically there 2 versions. In Cantonese there are 2 different names/versions I know of. one is the sweet n sour pork that's in cubes, pineapple, peppers, onions most people know and then theres the other one that usually has a fairly thin bone with a dark red sauce(maybe its called peking spareribs, but translated from Cantonese is sugar vinegar spareribs, and its very rare or hard to find a place that makes a good one nowadays) .

My mum used to make it a lot. We ate so well in my household because my mum is Russian but grew up in Xin Jiang, China and is an amazing cook and my dad is Chinese and from Tian Jing and he was a chef by trade. I was so offended the first time I ate Chinese food at a westernized Chinese restaurant but now I've learned to appreciate it because it's nice to have people want to interpret our food in to their own special version. That way everyone can eat it!

one of the beauties of NYC is traveling the world for authenticity without having to leave the US. I have said for YEAR'S if you want REAL Asian, go to Queens and I doubt you'll find moo goo gai pan. I absolutely LOVE the many culture's of NYC, and pretty much the whole North East. And I live over 700 miles west of there. I don't care what it is, but if you can think of it and CAN'T find it or someone who can in NYC....it just doesn't exist on this planet.... PERIOD 😎💩 "keep the faith people, and keep on keeping on"

I ate this dish while I was in Guangzhou and I really miss authentic Chinese food. When I first tried western chinese food coming back home I almost cried because it just made me miss China. Brings back great memories.

The dish came from Canton in the beginning, the actual original dish is "Sweet (Sugar) and Sour (Vinegar) spareribs. Back then this was a popular dish for the foreigners, so Chinese cooks changed the dish for their taste. From spareribs to tenderloin, and vinegar to ketchup, so no more bones and strong vinegar smell.

"We're going to CHINA!" "No, we're going to Queens." Could practically hear her heart break. But honestly, as long as it's authentic/what you're looking for, who cares where it comes from. Guessing it's a lot cheaper to travel to Queens (depending where you live).
