Sam is an alcoholic in recovery. She has been in recovery for over twenty years, but only got sober in 2019. Sam explains that for a long time she failed to work her 12-Step programme properly, attributing her lack of commitment to a belief that she might not be an alcoholic and that she might be able to drink moderately.
Sam’s mum is a recovered alcoholic and it was she who pushed Sam in the direction of recovery meetings. Sam found sponsors who stuck by her despite her half-hearted attitude to her recovery programme.
Sam discusses her experience of being bullied at school and the lasting psychological impact the bullying had on her. She forgives her bullies and even pities them for their behaviour.
Sam lives with her mum who has cancer and Sam is her primary carer. Sam expresses her gratitude for her sobriety and for being able to be present and useful in her mum’s final years.
Sam has re-established a trusting relationship with her mum. To the Sam of the past she offers this reassurance: “You’re not a bad person; you have an illness!” We couldn’t agree more and it’s wonderful to see Sam recovering and sponsoring other alcoholics, helping them to get well in the process.
Thank you, Sam, for your contribution.
