Turns out my writing hero, Rick Riordan, doesn't actually have a writing routine! So here's me attempting to replicate his ~process~ and use his outlining strategies, character profiles, journaling tricks, and more!
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
What do you think of Rick Riordan having no set routine? Do you also think it's interesting how so many authors DO need their set routines in order to be productive?
Do you use character profile worksheets? If so, which is your favorite?
Who should I try writing like next??

Rick is my daughter's favorite author. For her birthday I took her to see him at one of his events. His presentation about his past writing and how his first set of books were eh, was great to listen to. His presentation skills are awesome. At the event he gave out signed books and Camp Jupiter or Camp Half-Blood t-shirts, depending on which bag you got. My daughter still wears both shirts. (I gave her mine.)

Rick Riordan's "routine" is actually pretty similar to my own, though it took until this month for me to recover from NaNo. I try to write when I wake up in the morning, but unfortunately I'm easily distracted and a pro procrastinator. I do have a question for you, Kate. What works best for you to generate new ideas and plot? I personally struggle with this and I think it might be because I write fanfiction that relies heavily on canon plot points, so I don't have much practice with coming up with my own story beats. Thanks for your awesome videos and inspiring me to keep writing!
@anival9576
@anival9576 4 года назад
So, I'm not Kate, but something that I've tried recently that seems to work is making up stories in other parts of your world, whatever that is. That way, instead of having to start with how your main character encounters the conflict, you can start with a blank slate and then plan an intersection or "collision" between your new plot line and your main character's life, for example, a coup happens in the neighboring country--how does the fallout affect your character? Write more backstory! For what it's worth...

You know ... you using Ricks character sheet, made me google his list and put it into my scrivener as well. I do have three versions of a character sheet already - but I never really liked them. I always end up having a loooog page in my scrivener project, with ALL characters on one page , with their MBTI, and their character / backstory in bullet points. But I’ll give Rick’s sheet a go. It seems slightly different from the ones I used before. Especially, as you pointed out, the “neat / messy” and “do you like this person? Why or why not?” Points. I never thought about including that, if it’s not an obvious character trait, you know? (As in: This character leaves a mess behind, everywhere she goes. Or: She puts away stuff / straightens things out , almost absentmindedly, without really noticing it) This was a highly interesting video. Even though he doesn’t have a fixed routine or hours in which he works. ☺️

I LOVE RICK RIORDAN!!! I think I’m behind by two, and now after watching this, I know what I’m going to catch up on hahaha! Oooooo! Seeing the way he outlines, is exactly the way I outline. I mean, I’m a structure nerd, so I still need to have my Acts/PlotPoints as well, but pretty much I write a paragraph of each chapter, but am totally fine when I may veer into something new. (But then I re-outline hahaha! Okay! I’m a Planner fine!!) But it’s pretty darned close lol! And I love that about reading more, to essentially discover different voices!! It’s so cool that he had his students to run things by!! That’s actually huge! I should take more advantage of my teacher friends hahaha! They always help me with betas, but concept-beta-ing is super helpful too!

Characters have always been my biggest struggle when it comes to writing. I always come up with the plots first and then figure out what characters would go well with the plot. Recently, I've been trying to focus on making strong characters, and that's how I fell in love with Scrivener's character template sheets. They allow me to go really in-depth with character details. Anything I think of about my character goes into those templates, and it's a lot of fun for me to have those details down in my story file because then I can go back and refer to them at any given time. I think it's really helpful to have your characters down because then your story flows so much better. You can actually imagine your character being there in the situations you describe for them, and that has always been one of my favourite parts about writing.

Yay Rick Riordan! His humor and characters are one of my favorite things! I find I'm always taking away little bits from each "Trying to write like..." to try out for myself :D Regarding my own routine, I also write just a 1-3 hours a day since I have a full time job. I prefer waking up early to write (winter is kicking my ass though, since the cold makes it so difficult for me to get up from my warm bed). I try to write through the morning and afternoon because my brain turns into mush when the sun goes down (I'm pretty sure I'm solar powered at this point), but that's not always possible.

1. I related to this because I myself don't have a set routine. I think a set routine works for some, but not others. 2. I don't usually use them, but I go with a D&D character sheet. 3. I'd like to see a John Green or Aaron Sorkin writing process emulation.

I like the flexibility of how he works. I myself don't have a routine because from day to day, something can change so I can't really have a routine for my writing. I'm lucky when I make live streams. Hah. I actually haven't read any of his books just because I haven't been able to get my hands on them (money and all that. I swear one of these days I will). I love writing character profiles. I use this huge like 200 question one. True, some questions get deleted if they are completely useless (like doing a child profile means removing anything to do with work), but I find them a lot of fun and it helps me find inconsistencies. It also helps me figure out if any characters are too similar. That being said, all of that can change as I start writing the story.

Rick Riordan is an author that inspired me to write my series. I read his books in my early 20s and I really loved them.

Hi Kate - curious: what genres do you right in, where do you find your beta readers and critique partners?

I am a series right or myself I’d rather prefer Siri’s even when I’m reading I’d rather prefer series because I do you like reading standalone sometimes but sometimes it’s like oh no attended you know any wish she had more books to read and so that’s how I am I like series a lot more I like reading series because I know I’m like in with the characters for a longer period of time so that’s why I like writing a series that’s why I write a series

Honestly, knowing that Rick Riordan doesn't have a routine makes me feel so much better, because I just can't have a writing routine--I'm homeschooled, and every day is different for me, so I can't find a way to write consistently. And even if I could, I doubt I would be able to keep up a routine in any case. I'm just not the routine type.

It's a miracle, someone actual mentioned Rick Riordan's adult books XD Has your sister-in-law read Cold Springs? It was pretty dark for his status quo.

Your surprised (pikachu) face when discovering the character sheet was helping had me laughing, haha. I read an article about that one paragraph per scene outlining method like yesterday and I think I should try it out for the next project I'm going to tackle. Seems interesting. However, the 15min writing and/or journalling is definitely NOT something for me, lol. Apparently I cannot journal sustainably and getting me going on anything that's not my current project is a sure way to help my procrastinating tendencies, lol. This was a super interesting video, as always! I hope to see how the process will help you in the long run or if it's going to be something that you'll go to now that you've tried it or not.

This came just in time! For the past few days I have trouble progressing further when I realised that my characters development is kinda..uh...under developed. I started to rewrite from chap one yesterday and I want to tear my hair out. Not my type of fun. But here you are, tried writing like Rick who is all about character development. LOL

Since you’re writing romance, have you looked into Romancing The Beat by Gwen Hayes? Might make a cool video!

Hurray! a new experiment! Your outlining strategies are very similar to my own, in that I always go off the outline and wind up pantsing at least a third to a half of the book. One thing I have learned, however, is to write my “ending” early on. It give me something to aim for. Writing romance means my readers want a happy ending, but there are hundreds…nay, thousands…of variations on how to get there. So after 15K of pantsing, I go write the ending. It may change by the time I fill in the rest of the story, but it keeps me pointed in the right direction. Also, I journal all the time! By the end of the year, my journal is usually as long as a novel, although the journal will never be published. LOL Thanks for another entertaining break.

Magnus Chase is so great! And the Kane Chronicles (Egyptian mitology) too! I love Rick Riordan books and just him in general, he sounds like a really cool dude
