There is a company that take old wedding dresses and make gowns and suits for babies that have passed. They look wonderful and GODLY when their done with them
I always feel so emotional when I see a pre-worn wedding dress. I get caught up in all the emotions the bride might have felt wearing it, always very poignant to me ❤
My daughter did the same thing. She looked it up online and saw that it sold for $2500 new. The dress didn’t require any alterations. It was a beautiful find.
They are all beautiful in there own way , makes me sad they end up being Halloween costumes, so much love and work put into creating them . Thanks for showing us x
I agree! Unless a wedding dress is just too far gone to save, it feels almost criminal to diminish them with alterations that will forever ruin them for their intended purpose. I can only speak from a man's point of view, of course, but for me, personally, there is something so special about these more modest gowns that evokes an aura of splendor and glory that the modern, more revealing dresses simply lack. Be they male or female, regardless of the designer or amount on the price tag, it only cheapens the wearer's appearance, when the body is overly revealed on public display for just anyone to see. I love that she is showing them, and hope that she will be an influence upon the younger generations to value these treasures when they find them!
I've seen the most beautiful wedding dresses in charity shops for under 100.00, no one would ever know they were second hand if you didn't tell them !! There are many ways to save money on a wedding 👌
When I downsized after my husband died, I went from 2300 sq. Ft to 917 sq. Ft. I ended up donating my beautiful wedding dress to my favorite thrift store. They took it out of the box a week later and a lady came in looking for anything but needed a gown for a second wedding. She tried it on and it fit perfectly. They sold it for $50.00. I was so happy someone got it for their happy day. Thanks for showing this. Dresses of today are horrible😊
Beauty is in the person wearing the dress and that's the most important thing. A beautiful soul can pull off a potato sack. 💕 In the months leading up to making these videos last year we had been watching a lot of say yes to the dress because my brother got married last Fall. I think say yes to the dress is becoming so overrated and is mostly just there for dramatic back stories to waste your time. I often found that the brides going dress shopping would ask for bling or for a classic style etc yet the consultants would keep bringing the most standard modern normal dresses and if the bride didn't like any of those they pull out a $20k pinina torne (however you spell that name) which looks like lingerie or a bad Halloween costume that didn't flatter the brides body or make the family happy and the consultants would be like, "dont you love it" and the bride just buys it because she hasnt found anything else interesting so she goes with what costs the most. I don't think the brides are even fulfilled with modern day dress styles...so it's no judgment on the brides, it's truly a judgment on the style industry. We have the most tools and access to the most supplies ever yet the dresses are so underwhelming compared to the craftsmanship of the dresses I can find at the thrift store from years gone by. So this video was just an outlet for pent up say yes to the dress opinions id been forming for months prior. Yes I do sometimes see beautiful dresses. Even the simplest dress can be beautiful. And I have seen unfortunate dresses that aren't flattering and I feel bad that that was the best the bride could find.
I appreciate the nice compliment, but I just happen to be this size, I can't put weight on and sometimes it scares or upsets me. I occasionally find peace to know something about decades past makes me feel more "normal" in the sense that there seemed to be small sized brides, although I do run across more average to today sized dresses too.
Let me tell you Ladies ☝️I said “Yes” to Every one of those dresses 🤔🤣 I absolutely Loved 😍this video and am so Happy you guys decided to share these Beautiful dresses ❤Thank You 👏🛍️
What a fun day! That 1920's short dress looked great on you and fit you really well. Thanks for sharing this and yes, more videos like this would be great.
I too see these beautiful but outdated gowns in the thrift stores and feel sad that someone will wear it as a costume at Halloween. I often wonder who the special girl was that wore the dress and how she felt on her special day! Thanks for sharing!
One can also look at these dresses as recycling them for fabric only. That first one taken to a good dressmaker could of been made into something fantastic. Wedding dress fabric and laces are super expensive when bought new.
I completely agree and think about this all the time. In fact my mom and I just bought huge panels of curtains yesterday because they have beautiful lace trim that can be attached to a jean jacket or extend the hem of a skirt or dress. Wedding dresses are incredible resources for materials, I am sad when they get dismantled though :( better than ending up in a landfill though.
@@thissideofthefirmament Don't feel bad. Better you give them another life in a different form. Some of these fabrics would make nice little feminine pillows, wedding ring pillow, add some of that lace, like you stated can be put on a variety of things. Also think nightwear. That one with pink redone and it would be nice as a pre wedding dress, to wear to a shower or a pre-wedding wedding dinner, lunch. That 20's style dress is fantastic, I would defiantly repurpose the fabric and lace and make a nice cocktail dress, even in that flapper style.Childrens wedding dresses ect. ect.
The first one you put on even though it probably needs cleaning looked amazing on you I have seen weddings where vintage clothing was worn.and it was gorgeous.
I agree with the crowd on the second dress. With a few tweaks (including a dye job), that dress would be PERFECT for someone who participates in Civil War re-enactments.
They are so beautiful. It is so sad that people destroy them for Halloween. That first dress fit you so great, and looked so beautiful on you. You could totally have taken off the skirt and the waistband, and lifted it to tea length, got rid of the train, colored it, and it would make a beautiful dress. Actually all of them, my mind was going through ways to change them up to be wearable dresses. I bought my daughter a dress for her birthday, she wanted to dress up in an antique dress. I found one in Value Village that fit her perfectly, it was from the 1950's. She enjoyed it so much, got pictures in it.
My wedding dress is 53 years old in 8 more days, I still have it and it may have yellowed a little bit, but otherwise in perfect condition! I weighed 92 lbs at the time so only my young Great Granddaughters can fit in it!
I liked the firs two dresses. I found a brand new white linen Monsoon dress suitable for a wedding some years ago in a thrift shop. It cost me £6. I was thrilled. I cannot understand why people pay hundreds of pounds for a dress they are only going to wear once when they could easily find something in a thrift store for a fraction of the price.
I paid £1400 for my wedding dress and accessories 38 years ago, they are now in a box in the attic. I look back now, and cringe when I think of what we could have done with that money
@@ElledieWildAndFree I do believe expensive wedding dresses are a huge con. You now have the benefit of hindsight. I once read an article in a magazine showing 3 wedding budgets. One was something around £20,000, one was £5,000 and one was, would you believe, £50. The £50 budget included the dress from a thrift shop and the registrars fees. The reception was held in a garden and everyone was asked to bring a dish. The bride said she wanted to get married but didn't want to start her married life in debt. I thought this was a brilliant idea.
Awe thank you so much! Check out the "thrifting" playlist on my channel, there's 3 videos so far and I have one more to edit from trying them on this year
I couldn’t part with my wedding dress. I boxed it up correctly, put everything in there from our honeymoon. I just wish I could fit in it after 45years! I’d wear it around the house all day!💕
The dress with the pink rosettes looks like a southern debutante coming out dress from the late 50s early 60s. Gorgeous and could probably tell a good story.
I bought my satin wedding dress from the 1930s-40s at a thrift shop for about $40, and then I had it fitted. Beautiful long train, lovely lace around the bodice. I loved wearing a wedding dress from another time. I hope that the bride I share it with had as long and happy a married life as I am having.
Please do more of these videos I love them, and I love how you look in each of the wedding dresses. Most of these dresses could be updated to look so beautiful and modern.
Oh I know!! I love these dresses. Maybe this fall I'll be able to find a bunch again and make another couple videos. Thanks for your comment glad you enjoyed it!
My mother made my wedding dress in 1989 and it is very similar to the dress at 7:50 - big bow on the behind, too. Mine has a dropped waist and a platter collar, bodice and collar covered in candlelight lace, and the skirt is taffeta-like.
The first one is gorgeous except for that goldish random spots. #3 and four are stunning. #4 dyed in a soft beige or gray would be gorgeous as an evening dinner dress with a shawl and heels.
Hey if i were a bride on a budget and that dress was my size i would buy it. The only alteration i would do is remaking the sleeves. Professionally cleaned and with the right accessories, it would be fabulous.
The dress with the pleats on top is from the 80’s. The sleeves are like a Princess Diana’s as are the pick ups in front. I had a blue prom dress with the same sleeves and pick ups in 1984
Wouldn't it be wondrerful if there was a thrift store that only specialized in wedding gowns and it was set up like a luxury store? Every bride deserves a special shopping experience at every price point. And have an alterationist on staff too!
shame on that thrift store for not putting them out maybe in the spring, like April, so women short on cash can find a nice wedding dress for cheap. That first one, with a little pressing and updating (ie that tie in the back) was very pretty. And maybe with different shoes lol
Believe it or not one viewer actually WAS the original owner of one of these dresses and sent me the picture of her on her wedding day with the custom modifications done to the dress and verified the location! I plan to do a follow up video on it!
I used to sell bridal gowns all through the 80s and 90s. It was fun to revisit some of the dresses. I’m sure I sold someone. The second dress I don’t think the thread was intentionally discolored. I think somebody probably spilled champagne on the dress, and the organza wouldn’t soak it up but the threads would and overtime, the sugar would cause staining.
I BOUGHT A WEDDING DRESS FROM SALVOS ITS SOSO BEAUTIFUL. WITH A STUNNING VEIL I HAVNT GOT THE HEART TO LET IT GO I TAKE IT OUT AND PUT ON A STAND AND ADMIRE IT FROM TIME TO TIME WISH YOU COULD SEE IT. THE TRAIN IS TOO LONG TOKEEP OUT I HAD TO RESCUE THE DRESS AS IT WAS GETTING WALKED ON BROKE MY HEART SO I BOUGHT IT. IM SOGLAD I DID MAKES ME HAPPY YOUHAVE INSPIRED ME TO GET IT OUT AND ADMIRE AGAIN THANKU XX I
I also want to add to what I was saying before. Who wants to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on a dress that you are going to wear only once?!😂 and I have to agree with Debbie, the wedding fashions of today are just yeeeccchhh!!🥺☹
The dresses may be outdated but the fabrics are probably good quality. A tailor or seamstress can redesign it to be more modern. The one at 7:14 definitely looks workable. 👰🏽
Actually there are lots of sizes of dresses. Let me explain two ways I choose dresses to try on. 1) I try to pick dresses that are from lots of different eras or dresses that are unique from the standard modern dresses of current culture. 2)While there are dresses that are gorgeous and sometimes even vintage, some are a larger size than my body could properly showcase for others to see its beauty. Do not be dismayed! Just try and look, you might find something awesome! If not at a thrift store definitely check out Poshmark or eBay. There are excellent alternatives to going to a retail shop!
The home sewn pink and ivory prom dress, if you take off the huge ribbon flower corsage looking thing on the front, maybe update that with something smaller more in line with the pink rosebuds on the skirt, and give it a good steam, it would be good to go now. You see new gowns like that done with a vintage 50's look. I also think it would be nice a bridal gown for a small garden wedding or a reception dress for a larger wedding.
The puffed sleeves are so modern now if you've watched Vladiyan Royal Bridal. The last one could be updated with a stolle like bolero . Number 2, I kept seeing in a gazebo.
I hope that Edwardian looking vintage dress didn’t get ripped up and splattered with red paint for Halloween , that was a gorgeous dress just to have sitting on a vintage mannequin in a sewing room or corner of the bedroom……sacrilege to destroy all that gorgeous, possibly even all handmade lace.
The second dress is my wedding dress from 1993!!!! I recognize the add-ons I did!! I added the ribbons, added lace, and the uptake decor and ribbons!!! I have the picture!!! This is absolutely insane!! I had to put in a new zipper also... crazy!!
@thissideofthefirmament I was 19 years old and my mom's friend had it and sold it to me for $20. It was fashioned in the likeness of princess Diana's dress. It was made in the mid to late 80s and I bought it in 1993 in Boise, Idaho. I was also married in Boise. The marriage ended horribly so I got rid of the dress in 2003 at a thrift store in Boise. I'm absolutely shocked to see it here.. lol
To buy it for $25.00 is a price you would not find in ANY of our 2nd hand shops in South Florida. You will not walk out with out paying at least $ 200.00 or more. That one would have a 3 to 4 hundred dollar tag on it. You definitely got a wonderful deal. ❤
Oh that's how it is during the regular year here too! It's only in this short window of "Halloween" stock that they mark them way down and put out a whole collection of incredible dresses. September 1st is when Goodwill brings them out and then after that they get picked over in 1-2 weeks.
@@thissideofthefirmament unless they are stained up - they will not put them with the Halloween costumes. Goodwill, Hope Hospice or Salvation Army even privately owned thrift stores. It's a great idea. Some buy to make gowns for babies who passed others for actual wedding and some to alter for prom or what ever. It's a great idea and I love watching posts like yours. I wound up making a dress for someone because the price at thrift store and then paying to get it cleaned. It would have cost the same as buying thrift. Key is for my area is to go into central Florida or farther north.
Such a shame :( I want to send an emergency alert out to everyone to stop donating their dresses and just sell them online. It's heartbreaking the way they get treated in thrift stores. In the comments of these videos people have suggested the angel dresses for infants who pass, christening dresses, and doll dresses not to mention the people who have the skill to repurpose all this fabric who could develop a new dress at a fraction of the materials cost.
The ‘flapper style’ dress most definitely does not look like it’s older than the late 70’s early 80’s. It looks like 70’s-80’s Gunne Sax who did vintage inspired designs. It’s the lace that gives it away. The heavy Guipure cotton lace was used extensively in that time frame.
The sleeves on the “reenactment “ dress, are reminiscent of Princess Diana’s wedding dress. In in 1980’s, many brides wanted elements of that dress incorporated in their gown.
Hello ladies, thank you for a pleasant time, I enjoyed the dresses, my favorite is the western dress, the 3rd one that you tried on. And to the viewers, please hit the like 👍 button, share this video, and subscribe. Peace P
every girl's dream!! If I could do it again, I would go to these shops first!! I love all the vintage things! I was borne an old soul -always look for old things since childhood
I never got married because the relationships that I had, never got to that level. But I did buy a wedding gown when I thought I was going to get married. It was such a beautiful gown, I got it at J.C.Penney outlet store for only a $135.00, tax included!! It was back in the fall of 1991, and it was such a beautiful and comfortable wedding gown; like it was made just for me. Years later, I gave it away to a thrift store, because it no longer fit, plus I felt that I was never going to get married. However, I wish I never gave it away, I could of kept it as a keepsake or give it to my niece whenever she gets married.😢
Makes me wish I was in Calgary to buy some of those to take apart and upcycle!! The laces are gorgeous! I don’t see anything like that in the thrift stores around here.
These could have been donated to an Angel gown ministry. Donated wedding gowns are made into burial garments by volunteers for the babies who don’t get to go home from the hospital.
The first dress was beautiful. In the 70s, long sleeves and covered bodices to the neck were popular. The second dress looked like the 90s with the puffed sleeves.
It's my dress from 1993...I did alot of alterations on it. The marriage didn't work out and I took it to a thrift store in 2003... so crazy seeing it here. I got married in Idaho.
Wow. Just wow. What are the odds?!! I love that dress and regret not buying it. In person I don't think it looked anything like a Princess Di dress it was perfectly unique and feminine. Just a perfect dress. So sorry the marriage didn't work out. 💕
I can’t remember the name, but there is an organization which repurposes wedding dresses for babies stillborn, etc. Several friends have already donated and I will likely do the same.
Very pretty back in its day I bet. But they are all coming back in. Makes ya wonder how much they were back when it was new. I love making antique throw pillows for my spare bedroom that is decorated in all antique bedding.
I like the 3rd dress too. It would need more substantial alterations. I would redo the sleeves, get rid of the bow in the back and dangly pearls in the front, and redo the neckline and waistline. This would work if you or someone in your family sews. Commercial alterations would probably be too costly
Although it is still expensive to do alterations, they can be cheaper than making a whole new dress from scratch. Materials and fabrics are way expensive right now.
Yeah! And everyone's always talking about "fair trade". Let's start reusing the work someone's already done instead of paying people in other countries pennies to make these materials!
