Canned chicken in white sauce holds a bittersweet memory for me. I used to rely on the stuff when I was 18, and just moved into a bedsit. This served with rice was a staple for me, but it's just so bland! So I thought, whilst waiting for my new fridge to arrive, I would transform this crappy can of chicken in white sauce into something tasty and cheap.

To make my it you will need:
►1 x 400g can of chicken in white sauce
►1 x med onion
►1 x small head of broccoli
►150g garlic cream cheese
►350g of penne pasta
►A small handful of fresh basil
►Salt & pepper
►A little oil for cooking

I've been in a salty mood all day today. Every youtube video I chose to watch tonight was ticking me off more. I saw your latest video and thought, he always makes me happy, I'll watch this one. Great recipe. We have a campervan and I always take dried pasta, rice and a few tins for an emergency but I never know what to do with them to make a decent tasty meal. After finding your channel I’m getting loads of ideas. Thanks for sharing.

If you can afford powdered milk it stays good on the shelf for hard times. I keep some because we don't have the room for gallons of milk and I use it for anything that needs a bit like pasta or coffee. It does have a bit of a different taste then milk but if you try it before you cook it'll help you figure out how to apply it to what you're making with it

My grandma used to do chicken in white sauce when we were kids, she would add some tinned sweetcorn and then roll it up in some pancakes like little chicken burritos 😂 My dad also used to do it with boil in the bag rice on our camping trips, no mess and no fridge needed 😁

Reminds me of the 70s/80s when many recipes used a can of chicken or mushroom soup as the base. But that was when chicken soup out of a can wasn't the disgusting gloop you so often find today. A tip with broccoli is to get it out of its unnecessary wrapper if it has one as soon as you get home, cut the dry bottom of the stalk off, and put it into a glass of water. It is amazing just how quickly the florets firm up. As for broccoli, cauliflower, and even cabbage stalks, I keep hearing of loads of uses for them - but not for me, eaten raw, they are the chef's perks every time!

I’ve never seen chicken like that I know we have small tins of chicken like a tin of tuna in Australia but not in any sauce, well none that I’ve seen anyway. It actually looked quite nice for something that came out if a can.

When I was younger living on my own I used this chicken in white sauce! I would fry an onion and couple of chopped mushrooms, added frozen peas and corn, and parsley and tarragon, add in the tin of chicken in white sauce and a tiny bit of milk to loosen. Ate it with rice or instant mash

You can use different veggies too. You could add spinach but I've gone off the stuff, too slimy

Nice simple recipe. My wife came up with a good use for left over lemon, we slice it up then freeze it laid out flat (assuming you have a freezer), then store in the freezer in a plastic container. These frozen slices deal for popping into a G&T or other tasty beverages.

It's called a saute pan. I love them because it's got high sides so you can stew in it, make sauces, use in the oven as well as frying stuff.

Adam, You have the magic touch! When I moved out at 18 ,I would have corn flakes for tea one day and rice crispies the next! And for a treat mid week I'd have tinned spag bol!! I look back and wonder how I survived! Oh,and tinned rice pudding too,eaten straight from the tin!! Oh man I can relate to that Ruth. Some of the crap I ate when I was 18 would barely pass as food 🤣. Tinned burgers cold right of the tin. I remember I was so skint, all I had was a can of tomatoes and some cheese that was slightly mouldy. So I cut the mould off, cut it up and chucked it in with the tomatoes and ate it like a cold soup. Bedsit gazpacho 🤣

Ideal for a pie filling. I just wish they had a bit more chicken in them. Also, the chicken can sometimes be a little dry. But it did the job anyway

I use this for my kids once or twice a month its great i either use spaghetti and add bacon so like a creamy fake carbonara haha or i use pasta shapes n bake it with cheese on top i also sometimes add some chicken seasoning and garlic its just a good cheap base for a great dish

Looks delicious as always Adam. This is what I love to do with premade stuff from the store like that. Frozen pizza isn't very good, sure. Throw more toppping from your fridge on it, extra cheese, and whatever herbs and spices you like. Bam! Much better. Same with canned soup and other stuff. Yeah, sure it won't be as good as 100% homemade, but that isn't always possible and improving premade stuff can still have great results

We can get canned chicken in the US, but I don't recall ever seeing chicken in white sauce, and I'm one of those dorky people who studies the shelves all the time. In fact, I don't think I've even seen it at any UK specialty store in my area. I can get mushy peas though!🤣

A daft think to ask maybe, but - what if you don't have all those cupboard extras that everyone seems to take for granted? Salt. pepper, various herbs and spices, flour, oil. That's going to be an upfront cost to begin with. Not everyone has these staples believe it or not, and don't have the money to buy them all at once up front - so really, (particularly if you're trying to convince people to cook for themselves) the question should be which of those staple cupboard items are prioritised over others?
