@@dm.b7560 Alexas are exclusively for crews when you think about it. They have built in CDs, right side AC operation monitors, a viewfinder etc. they are genially built. I have a friend here in LA with a monster, and it is insane. Now that I got a sold b cam, I think im getting rid of the Komodo for a VV sensor. The monster is an absolute bazooka of a camera, lot of people aren't even aware of it!

For sure! I think the Monstro is a much better value-for-money than the raptor. The image is 95-98% as good for half (or less) the price. You won't regret it! :)

The monstro has more compression ratio and that’s really important for me as a red user. Also there’s a decent EVF for DSMC2 cameras with pretty low price for now.

Listen man , this was a 80k camera and now selling for 10-12k . What a steal . Sign me up

Hi, thanks so much for watching my video! Yes, I've experienced several serious issues with RED cameras (and RED Support) over the years. I was actually planning to make a video discussing these issues (and RED's questionable-at-best handling of them) here soon. In short, I've had a Weapon Dragon, Komodo, and the Monstro in this video all fail in production-halting ways over the last two years and have spent several thousand dollars on those repairs, with RED even trying to charge me almost $2K more for one repair for "recommended repairs", as they put it. Please stay tuned for that video - I have actually switched to Sony cameras for my main work since posting this video because of my horrendous experience with RED Support.

@@theolufson I am terribly sorry to hear that you have had such a bad experience with them. I would love to hear more about that in a future video. I have heard so many horror stories about RED cameras and so few good ones. That is of course not very unexpected as it seems that most people are more eager to be vocal about bad experiences in order to warn others from making the same mistake, but with RED cameras I feel like I hear so many more horror stories than with any other product so it is surprising that they still have been used for so many high end projects. Digging a bit deeper has lead to me hearing more good stories of cameras being problem free since their release dates basically and giving great return on investment. This has made me think that it might not be as risky as I thought to get one, but hearing from you that 3 cameras have failed you during productions within the last two years make it seem like maybe it is best to stay clear of RED all together. I often find myself in situations where a failing camera would have been a project killer and the thought of spending $10.000+++ just to have a inconveniently large paper weight sounds ... well..., not worth potentially getting slightly nicer images. Also, just having that extra stressful thought, while you are trying to get the shot, of, "my camera might shut off and die at any moment in the middle of a shot and in front of my client", makes it sound like we hate ourselves and are willing to pay to be constantly anxious and get ulcers. It would have been great to know exactly how many RED cameras that have failed out of all the ones they made so that we could get the actual %. At least if you know the chance of destroying your savings within a day then you can make an informed decision if the risk is worth it to you, but as it stands right now we are making that decision blindly.

@@kristofferskarsgard8024 Exactly right! That thought process is why I got rid of them. In fact, all three cameras experienced failures right in front of the client, and one of them happened about an hour into recording an online course - while literally just sitting on the tripod recording. Fans were running, the other DSMC2 camera continued working fine, and boom it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on. RED sent me a $2700 bill to fix it a month later... I've started working on putting together the outline for a video discussing this. It depends on a few factors, but generally I can get 45 minutes out of a 95Wh battery(I appreciate your "thicc boi" terminology lol). My 150Wh batteries give me closer to an hour and 20 minutes! But of course, they're a lot heavier too. The camera is quite power hungry haha. RED themselves state it draws 50 watts in a basic configuration at idle, but I think it draws a lot more while recording(and seemingly more at idle as well).

That would be another way to do it! It’s possible, but only because of the very high dynamic range of the sensor. If I tried doing that on my Sony, the shadows would be way too grainy and very possibly unrecoverable. So it really only works on high dynamic range sensors (I guess kinda like HDR)

@@theolufson I see, but this is all in-camera? I'm curious how the camera "knows" that you don't want the windows to be over exposed and blown out.

@@SunriseWaterMedia It's all in-camera, yes. Since it's raw I can change ISO in post but in this case that's not really necessary since I need to use it in-camera to expose properly. This is a long video(link below), but it kind of explains what I'm talking about. RED essentially recommends shooting high ISOs in bright conditions, and low ISOs in dark conditions to force yourself to use ND or lights more, which gives you a better exposure overall. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QfLkWyhGh7A.html

@@theolufson Amazing info! I never knew ISO could be changed after the fact... Granted, I've never had the opportunity to shoot RED footage.

I like both for different reasons! I’ve actually owned both, too. I personally like the look of the Scarlet W sensor more, it’s a smaller cut of a Dragon sensor. Better dynamic range by a noticeable margin compared to the Komodo which made a big impact in the shots I was getting, but Dragon is a very light hungry sensor so if you expect to be shooting in a low light environment go Komodo, it has better low light performance. Komodo is also much smaller, WAY lighter, and uses about 1/3 of the power while running which is even more of a real-world difference than it sounds. My S-W killed a 95wh battery in about 1.5 hours, while the Komodo ran 5 hours on the same battery. Overall I think they’re both great, really depends on what you plan to shoot. If you can take your time, light things properly, and don’t mind a heavier camera with more batteries, I’m of the opinion that the Scarlet W will give you a better image overall with more dynamic range to work with. The S-W also has a more ‘grainy’ look to it because it’s only 5K and is a very light-hungry sensor, figured I should note that as well. Well I’ve since sold both of them soooo… (Threw this video together quickly, was planning to make a side by side as well but both cam’s kept breaking and I finally had enough and sold them off lol)

Ended up selling it due to some reliability issues and poor RED Support experiences. However, yes, I still think that sensor is one of the best images for the investment you can get!

@@TLFILMS oh exciting! Let me know how you like it. With RED being acquired by Nikon now I’m hopeful things over there will improve and have been considering getting another cam (probably a Komodo since I want something more compact if possible, but we’ll see). I sold my entire Monstro kit for $14,900 in March. I had some more rare modules like a LongTake and a direct-mount Ultra Brite monitor but even still, I think that ended up being a great sale price.
