I used a split ortho keyboard for 30 days... and it was rough. Is using a strange ergonomic keyboard worth it - or is a normal keyboard better? Let's find out. We used the RGBKB Sol 3.

I've been using a split keyboard (Kinesis Freestyle 2) and Colemak for almost 10 years. Some comments: 1. Monitor. You need to place your monitor higher. Your neck and shoulder pain is not caused by the keyboard but by your hunched-over position. 2. Chair armrests. Having proper positioning of your elbows greatly helps/hurts your typing style. Having armrests that have width and height adjustments is great. 3. Glasses. If you work that many hours on the computer, you might want to consider fixed-focal-length, blue-light reducing, anti-glare, high-index, titanium-framed, lightweight glasses. In short, glasses normally are made for reading (12" away) or driving (30+ feet). However, having custom computer glasses for 3 ft. distance is a great benefit for computer use. 4. R&R. Your needs need relaxation. I sugest a minimum of 10 min. every 2 hrs. However, be aware that this 10 min. relaxation is for your eyes, not your brain. You need to spend that 10 min. focusing on something in the far distance. Just closing your eyes for 10 min. DOES NOT RELAX your eye muscles.

The main thing I don't like about the Freestyle 2 is that the '6' key is on the left hand. The '6' belongs on the right hand. It's done that way because it makes the split between the two halves look nicer. I did discover recently that the Kinesis Ascent lets me mount the split segments vertically, but some of the keys are in just a slightly different position than a normal keyboard.

I think the biggest mistake people make when moving to an ergonomic layout is too not move the location of the most commonly used key, ie backspace. Put it under your thumb, possibly next to space. Space is under your thumb because you use it a lot, moving to an ergonomic layout you will make mistakes so put backspace next to space and you won't have to worry about losing your home row. Ctl, alt, space, back space, enter are all under my thumbs on my Ergodox layout.
@thechildrenoftherev0
@thechildrenoftherev0 2 года назад
I've got a backspace key under the spacebar on my split keeb, and I can hit both with my left thumb. I still fin myself reaching up to the original backspace with my right-little finger half the time though, and I've had my split board for over a year now
@wolf1066
@wolf1066 2 года назад
When I designed my own split-ortholinear keyboard, the backspace key was placed under my right thumb right next to the Enter key - it gets a lot of use. To be fair, it got a lot of use on the standard keyboard when it was buried up at the top right of the board, it's just that now it's quicker and easier to reach...

5:47 Man, this feature with the split keyboards is _not_ without it's perks - I bought my first last year while studying my first year in Uni, and being able to fit my Chinese textbook _in the middle of my keyboard_ really was a useful feature during classes. I am currently back on a traditional keyboard due to durability issues on the split keyb (A Moonlader), but I will most likely be going back to it once that gets solved.

The best thing you can do for ergonomics, is to ditch QWERTY itself. It's brutal, and it takes a whole month; but the result is definitely more comfortable. I originally started learning Dvorak; but I found that the L and S locations were TERRIBLE for interactive use of POSIX-like shells. Colemak was the layout I ended-up going with, and I've been using it ever since -- for over a decade. I type the same speeds on QWERTY and Colemak, with a similarish error rate (Colemak is slightly better), but my fingers move a lot less overall, and it *is* somewhat noticeably more comfortable after long periods.

Yeah from what I've heard Dvorak isn't as good as I thought it was. I was recommended Semimak because of being a previous Dvorak user but because I can't download software I was told to go with Workman international 😎 MonkeyType discord server has helpful people in there for choosing a new layout. Don't go with Dvorak though, there's even someone with 5 years or more with it that switched off. Outdated and only based off a few hundred words. The research on it working was mostly conducted by the maker themself TLDR: Don't use Dvorak. I used to love Dvorak though 😔
@christoph6055
@christoph6055 Год назад
@@sammy_sand_utubeyt6901 Yeah, my personal opinion: Go with Colemak CAW. That's a further variation of Colemak DH, you can install both with the cool program EPKL on Windows. On other platforms, you need scripts or for mac it's generally harder to use custom layouts. What's best about EPKL is the Extend layer. You should definitely try it.

But, I can play both proficiently now even within a single match. I've found that the more custom layouts I try the easier it is to switch between them. My input memory is just far more malleable now. It's a fun and expensive hobby of mine testing strange peripherals at this point.

I've found that for me stretching for 15 minutes every morning makes a huge difference. I include stretches for shoulders and forearms. I hold each stretch for 1 minute.
@BYCARRIE
@BYCARRIE 3 года назад
Could you list the stretches you do? Just curious
@FatHulkRideEbike
@FatHulkRideEbike 3 года назад
@@BYCARRIE Mostly normal stretches. I try to stretch every major muscle group, but for someone who types all the time there is one stretch that I did find particularly effective for the shoulders and upper back and spine. I will try to describe it and a couple others I found most effective. (Stretch 1) I do this by using a doorway. Left arm / shoulder: While standing close to the corner of the doorway. Hold your left arm out straight in front of you and put your left elbow on the corner of the doorway. Move your right shoulder toward your left elbow to get a good shoulder stretch. While holding that position step forward with your right foot as well to put a gently twist on your spine. Hold for 30 seconds or one minute. I use a youtube interval timer. This is a powerful stretch and it is easy to put too much torque on your shoulder or spine so be careful. The rule I use for myself for stretching is I push it until I feel a tiny bit of pain and either keep it there or back off slightly. There is another way to do this stretch but I'm a guy with wide shoulders and I have quite a bit of muscle. This will work for larger people while some of the other variations won't. Prior to doing this stretch my upper back was so sore I thought I had cancer or something lol. 5 minutes after doing this I felt great! This is what got me into stretching every day. Ok, rambling on... (Stretch 2) Stretching my quads without killing my knees. This is also a very powerful stretch. I use a stairway with a railing on each side and I use these railings so I don't get hurt. Start at the bottom of the stairway...all the way down, not on the first step. Standing position, facing away from the stairs. Grab each railing. Bend one knee, and place your foot on the third stair (most likely the right level, you might want the fourth if you are tall and flexible). Your foot is on the stair, but it is the top of your foot on the stair. Your knee will rest on the first stair. Control your lean with the railings to get a good quad stretch. You are using your knee bend to stretch your quad but you are also pushing your hip forward to stretch your quad. The railings and the stairs give you an effective way to stretch your quads and balance the stretch with the bend of your knee and pushing your hip forward so you do not over tax either the hip or knee. Repeat with other leg. Do not hurt yourself this is a very powerful stretch. Every other stretch I do is pretty normal and you can find anywhere. Order of the stretches I do that works for me: Stretch to open chest, shoulder stretch, open chest again, touch toes, calf stretch, hamstring / glute stretch using stairs, quad stretches on stairs, hip flexors, forearm stretches, and finish with seated stretch for inner thighs. For an IT / office worker, the shoulder stretch I described and all leg stretches help a ton! I try to stretch in the morning and at night. I started out just doing 5 minutes a day and using one of the youtube interval timers. ( just search for "30 second interval timer with 5 second rest" later I switched to "1 minute interval timer with 5 second rest") If you are feeling tight from sitting all day and feeling hopeless I will tell you that even just 5 minutes of stretching a day can literally change your life. Potentially it is a small effort with huge rewards. How I think stretching benefits me....this is my opinion: General improved feeling of well-being. Vastly reduced or eliminated muscle pain and discomfort. Reduces feelings of stress. I also think it improves circulation. Increased ease of mobility. I plan on continuing to stretch my entire life. Other recommendations for office workers if you work at home and can control your environment: Get a good standing desk. Walking treadmill is a nice add-on. Get a good office chair! I used to use the $100 officemax chairs. I changed to a steelcase leap. Game changer. It's interesting how people will pay $600 for a recliner they might use an hour a day but don't want to spend a lot on a chair they use 8, 10, or 12 hours a day. Make this investment in yourself or see if your company will pay for it. C989M keyboard also worked great for me but you have to see what works for you. I hope this helps someone!!

I'd love to try a fully split keyboard like this but my biggest issue is the price point. No matter what keyboard I'm buying I simply can't justify a full $350 keyboard. Even other options are just too much. Look forward to trying this tech in the future if it ever becomes more affordable in a mass market.

Sadly the prebuilt variants will never get cheap since it's such a niche product category. You just have to buy them as kit and solder yourself to get something even remotely affordable and even then you will be paying quite a lot.

I own a Corne split keyboard (42 keys) and after 2 years of usage I'm faster now with the split keyboard than with the regular one, even though I can switch back and forth between regular keyboard and the corne. Nowadays, I don't have any more wrist pain... even though I keep my corne kbd flat with no tenting, just a little diagonally oriented to keep my wrists straight. I would never go back to regular keyboard for work, even though I'm a programmer and some of the symbol keys are harder (initially) to get due to the reduced number of keys, once you assimilate it you are as fast as with a normal keyboard (the difference is you have to press combinations of different keys to get the symbol). It took me about 2 months to get as fast with the corne as with the regular, but now I'm faster. Nice video!

I know from a DT video with the moonlander, you have "layers" so you basically have a num pad layout within the keys, you'd just have to use something like "shift" to do so. Not sure the case with yours. Also, I think the real ergo benefit would be keeping it shoulder width apart so you can maintain good posture (but of course that can all be preference. I've yet to try split but because of DT I'm definitely looking to get one.

Cool to see others discovering split and ortholinear keyboards! I would recommend a palm rest. That might help with some of the "new pain" you felt when switching. Just the thing I was thinking looking at those raised hands at the footage. Funny thing, armwrist also gets getting used to. I had to sort of force my hands to stay at the armwrist and remember to totally relax and fix my hands on it. Ofc if youre gonna leave bkspc and esc at their original positions, then youre gonna need to move your wrist, but when going 36 keys you just kinda don't move at all.
@KateLate____
@KateLate____ 9 месяцев назад
I think if you have palm pain, just resting on something softer is targeting the symptom rather than the cause. Check what is being strained and why. You may need to speak to a physiotherapist for diagnosis. Beware not to have your wrists flexed back or at an unnatural angle.

I got myself a split keyboard like 6 weeks ago - the Dygma "Raise" - and I love it. While it is a split keyboard, it keeps the staggered set of the keys. I love the possibility of changing the angle and distance between each half, depending on my sitting position and posture. I still need to improve on my touch typing, as my old typing style was not that disciplined. Gaming is also great, as you can move the right, unused part of the keyboard out of the way to better adjust the distance between left hand and the mouse.

It's funny. I switched to a split column stagger board and saw an immediate reduction in upper back, arm, and wrist issues mostly because it corrected my posture immediately by virtue of the split keeping my arms in more natural positions. You're right about the brain getting used to it pretty quick. I now have a Sofle Choc and a Corne with choc switches so I went from MX spacing to choc spacing as well, which threw an additional wrench in the learning process. I definitely recommend typing at least an hour a day on monkeytype or a typing trainer like typing club if you're switching to this. I also found that going back and forth a bit helped me get my head around using both types of boards faster. I had to send my sofle in for repair and I'm typing on an alice board right now so I can start to feel the wrist strain. I definitely recommend trying a split board if you have RSI issues. My carpel tunnel has been a big issue with typing in the past since my hands will go numb but the split boards along with a trackball mouse have made a big difference.

I really want to try a split keyboard someday but I worry a bit about getting used to a completely different layout. I don't just type on a keyboard at home, sometimes work at the library or take notes in class and I certainly wont bring my mechanical keyboard to any of those places (weak , I know). It would be awesome to be able to use something like this for long writing sessions but I think having to use two very different types of keyboards and needing to deal with the strain of using both seems to kind of defeat the purpose. It's about time we make at least ortholinear arrangements a standard lol
