I was a Computer Science major at the University of Helsinki back in the 1990’s. I remember that most of us opted to create a simple records management solution for a software development lab exercise, but then there was this one guy, who wanted to make his own operating system, and the rest is history... A few years later Linus Torvalds was working as an assistant lecturer and taught me C programming. Let’s just say that he really knew what he was talking about 🤓

@@GIOBOZZ In those days making some sort of systems programing or development of compilers and programming languages wasn't so very unusual. Minicomputers, microprocessors and even PC industry had already started. But not all activities had similar trajectories with success like Linus had. Many active students however soon where also teaching something fairly practical in universities or working in laboratories or computer centers in many or all Finnish universities, which had anything to do with computing.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, non-dietary sugar that has interesting properties when it comes to dental health. It can lower your mouth pH to stop it getting acidic and destroying the enamel (this happens after about every meal because of bacteria). But it also blocks plaque causing bacteria from being able to get nutrients so they can't multiply but starve instead. Eating xylitol after a meal, specially after eating sweets will keep your teeth and mouth in better condition. Really good when traveling or doing a long days work away from home when you are not able to brush your teeth when needed. It is recommended by dentists... It is teeth candy. It is not medicine, not antiseptic or anything like that, it just happens to work great in human mouths, by co-incidence. Like all non-dietary sugars, it is somewhat laxative so.. you can't eat a full bag of xylitol candy.

Xylitol is for toothpaste and bubble gums. Many inventions were originally famous in Finland but later sold to other people outside. Credit-wise, please show more curiosity for Finland stuff. I know a lot of people don't understand because the creators behind the scenes are not always credited in the list of credits, nor are they really to be "known" someone as Finnish (usually recognized easily with the surnames). Also, Moomin (cartoon) story is written by Tove Jansson, and she was half Finn and Swedish. The animation you saw in 1990 to early 2000s was made in Japan, but technically this,s was originally from Finland. We also now have a re-make (in 3D) of the Moomins story.

Your train of thought style works because you have organized thoughts and get to the point succinctly, you never ramble. They're pleasant and easy to watch. You also DON'T use jump cuts, you record in a single take which is easy on the brain of people who aren't neurotypical. Randomly cutting up audio and editing out natural gaps in speech is NOT a "style", it's a sign that the dolts who do it can't speak or edit properly. Those who do it deserve a piece of rebar upside their skulls. 3:30 - Those scissors ~~~SSS~~~UUU~~~CCC~~~KKK~~~ if you're left handed. Regular scissors are tolerable, though the blades are still on the wrong side for lefties. 3:58 - Toboggan ("tuh-bah-gun"), another word for sled. Starting in the early 1970s, Makkonen had been a systems designer for Finland’s post and telecommunications authority. Along with colleagues in its radio network unit, he worked on developing future mobile communications services. It was in a pizzeria in Copenhagen that the idea for a feature to generate texts was born. The concept was taken to discussions on a worldwide GMS standard, meetings were conducted and chats held during coffee breaks. Makkonen headed the Finnish Telecom’s mobile services divisionwhen, at the start of the 1990s, it opened its GSM service, includingtext messaging. Development engineers for the telecommunications authority worked in the spirit of freedom of information, and it never even occurred to Makkonen to document his efforts and apply for a patent. When the big listed companies started piling up money from the invention years later, he preferred to just put the history of its origin out of his mind. I wouldn't trust these lists too much. Some items are very obvious and documented, like Linux or a specific product of a company, like the ergonomic scissors. However, many others are ambiguous or just plain incorrect. The dish drying closet was first invented (and patented!) in the USA, but it got little popularity there, plus the Americans started using a dishwasher sooner than the rest of the world, so that's what Americans would have dreamed about, not a drying closet. Sauna is a Finnish word, so folks think it's a Finnish invention. However, it's a thousands of years old thing. What Finns did was preserve it as living culture more than others, so the Finnish word spread all over the world, except to Sweden and Russia, as they had their own word for it. It's impossible to know who invented sauna in the stone age, just like it's impossible to say who invented the wheel. The Internet browser is an example of an ambiguous one. Finns developed the first browser with a graphical interface, but before that text based ones had existed for years. So, the Finns merely developed an existing thing further into the modern direction.

Chandler Vashti's dish drying cabinet was pretty different from Maiju Gebhard's. If you have a problem with that, you _absolutely_ should have a problem with Fiskars scissors and Angry Birds included on the list.
@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme Год назад
@@TheRawrnstuff Why would I? Obviously Fiskars invented Fiskars scissors and Rovio invented Rovio Angry Birds. Scissors have existed probably for thousands of years, in one form or another, and the concept of Angry Birds was nothing new in a general sense. However, if you list specific products by specific brands, then that's it, what can you say, even if it doesn't exactly mean anything groundbreaking. Things become much more troublesome when you drop the details and claim a general invention. So what if the earlier (patented) dish drying cabinets weren't exactly the same? The core concept was already there. Check the US patent 1860617 for example. Only the arrangement of plates inside is different. There are other folks who patented the thing earlier than Gebhard introduced hers.
@TheRawrnstuff
@TheRawrnstuff Год назад
@@herrakaarme I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you're saying. You're saying that the "Finnish drying cabinet" shouldn't count because she _didn't_ invent a brand for it, like Rovio or Fiskars did? It is still an individual product, invented separately from its competitors. Multiple people can invent "a thing" without them influencing each other, or even ever having heard about those products. Fiskars scissors and Angry Birds, however, are straight up copies from what existed before, but with some ease-of-use stuff added and with a new coat of paint. They - if anything on this list - are the popularizers of the ideas their "inventions" are based on.
