I've been playing Warzone 2100 for several years. It has a story and was originally made by Pumpkin Studios before they were fired, so the game was released open source. It still gets updates even today by people maintaining it. There was suppose to be a sequel, but studio was shut down so we will never know. So you joined the game there in the second campaign for team Beta, you normally start off as team Alpha. So team Beta is fighting a tech superior foe known as the Machine Collective who is being controlled by a super AI known as Nexus. Collective was basically being used by Nexus to retrieve post fallout technology that was lost. As the game goes you find technology and research it in order to advance your buildings, vehicles and other things. The things you started fighting are Cyborg units which you don't have access to yet. There more Synaptic link tech you research, the more exposed you become to Nexus being able to assimilate your units and even buildings. Start off as Alpha in the story mode campaign and you will slowly start to understand what's going on. As alpha team you will have to start off fighting scavengers and eventually the New Paradigm who of course is more advanced then you with weapons. You will destroy them and collect technology they have. Eventually you get to Gamma team at the end and that is when you fight Nexus directly. The game goes deep as there are units designed to counter other unit types. Use fast scouting vehicles to see what you are up against before heading in for combat if time permits. Sometimes the game doesn't give you much time and you have to get good. If you can't take the heat, type in as a cheat, Double up and Bifferbaker to make thanks twice as strong and do twice the damage.

can say Warzone 2100 is a really good RTS from the early 2000s or Playstation era. (first time i played it was on a PS1) when it was discontinued, people fought hard to make the license unlock and replaced the proprietary innards with open sourced ones. the only thing i wish about this game is that they would let us have bigger maps... (instead of just 256x256, maybe 4096x4096.)

Warzone 2100 came out in 1999. Was a paid product at one point in time... in 2021 it is free and open source, you can install it on steam... fairly certain when I got it on steam, I had to pay for it.

the distro is suprisingly good! Default theming is great, preinstalled apps selection is awesome, configurability and stuff... Just really really good!

8:24 - Warzone 2100 is very fun! :D It's a pretty old game, but it worth checking out. If I recall correctly, it wasn't available for free in the past when it was launched. I recall having a CD with it.

Who remembers when Warzone 2100 starts you at the very beginning of the campaign (aka. the Alpha Campaign) when you start over? Now we can start from like a quarter or halfway through the campaign.

Sometimes Russians make really good video games. I really like She Sees Red, Pathologic (2005 version, not remake) and Tiny Bunny.

Astra (not Astro) is a legit distro. Like ALT, also Russian, it seems it is a little more focused on being secure than what we normally see - o some things can be harder to do as user/blocked per default. But a serious distro, they try to make KDE lighter by mixing in stuff from other DE/WMs. That's my impression from using it, seems they have a modified version of Thunar as file manager but the desktop is KDE (not sure if it is a Plasma DE). So it can be used on quite old machines, I have it installed on an old gaming tower from around 2008 that I bought for cheap.

I like how they've included Midnight Commander considering orthodox file managers such as Norton Commander or Total Commander were (and still are) very popular in post-Soviet countries. There even was Volkov Commander, a Ukrainian made NC clone coded in assembly.

Warzone 2100 was a real game from the late 90s. it had its flaws but gathered something of a cult following over the years. A highlight is unit customization.
