As someone who wants to get out more, but doesn't, reviewing more "reasonable" camping items is great. While I dream of the top tier gear, reviewing REI or similar items is very helpful. Thank you.

Not sure id consider this reasonable, if your going to drop $300 on a tent you could get an X mid. That said I do understand there are tents that are more than twice the price.

@@jzubsthat's full price. If you want this tent, buy it at one of the many sales, or if you get lucky, at one of the garage sales. I bought 2 of these for $125 each at a garage sale.

I've been an REI customer and co-op member for over 30 years, and even worked in an REI store for a few years back in the last century. I have generally found REI brand equipment to be a good value - a sweet spot of good design and materials, longevity, and reasonable but not cheap prices. You can get better gear, and you can get cheaper gear, but it's not often you'll find gear that's both. And I can also report that some of my REI gear from the 90s is still going strong 25+ years later. These days I can afford to spend a little more and often go for gear a little farther up the performance scale, but I can't honestly say that the price/performance/durability equation comes out in my favor. Of course, the best thing I ever found in an REI store was and is my wife. I don't think you can always find those, though.

I was a member of the REI co-op in the early 1980s. I went in to get a topo map of an area I was hunting and asked an employee to tell me where the maps were. She took me to where the maps were and asked me what I was going to doing in the area I was getting the map for. I told her I was going to hunt deer. She freaked out and I left the store never to return. I used to spend lots of money there on things like fiberglass kayaks and many other things. Oh well, other stores sell the stuff I need.

I'm going to go out and say the REI Half Dome 2+ is a workhorse tent that is often overlooked by tent snobs and trend-followers. It's not "super ultralight" but it's a reliable tent that will last many years with proper care. Caught on sale, it is one of the best values in the backpacking tent world. Between two people it's less than 2 pounds per person. One does not need to spend $500+ for a decent backpacking tent, especially for two people.

I completely agree. I caught mine in the garage sale section at an REI due to a damaged pole. Picked it up for $60 essentially brand new, and then just shaved off like 2mm of that broken pole and it was good as new. (obviously do at your own risk) But I like to stick the tent body in and the poles in the pack separately, and it carries great! Even better if you can split the weight with another person. Solid purchase!

I have this tent as well! Had the previous iteration and just bought the new version over the phone (gave me the upcoming Memorial day sale price of $250)! Perfect for 2 people and a dog. That tent is a serious workhorse that has never leaked and comes with a groundsheet. Almost pulled the trigger on Nemo and Big Agnes thinking I needed top branded 2 person tents (need to fit 1 wide pad and 1 regular) but those brands with the ground sheet were.....the exact same weight! Insane deal - can't pass it up. HIGHLY recommend - especially this new iteration out now.

Excellent review. REI has an outstanding return policy which really ought to be mentioned. Also, REI members get member rewards (they used to call it a dividend--REI is, after a cooperative) which is usually about 10 percent which would make this tent cost come to about $270 though you would have to spend the $30 savings at REI.

Since I’m smaller I love the rei chair air. It’s very similar to the helinox chair zero. On the helinox it’s easier to stretch legs out in front of you. With the rei chair I end up sitting with my feet straight down to the ground but I don’t mind it. I got the rei chair for half off at around $50. It’s normal price is around $100 compared to the helinox at $150. Anyone considering a helinox chair should go into an rei and setup the chair zero next to the rei air chair and see which one is better for your body type. They are almost identical but there are slight differences. And the rei one is a few grams lighter.

If you get an opportunity maybe review the same tent but the version that is for two people, just to see if that might give you the extra room you would want if you were storm stayed (if the extra weight isn't too much more). Also, maybe try putting extra waterproofing on those seams that leaked and see if that might help with that problem and suggest to REI that they notify prospective purchasers that they may have to treat this tent before the first use. Also, REI should improve the accuracy of the tent weight on the label and website. Hopefully, with your feedback they will respond and make corrections. Thanks for your review, you are saving people headaches, disappointments and money while giving them honest reviews.

Yes returning it even after use is awesome but for that price I believe it should come with a lifetime warranty like many other brands. You’re paying nearly the same price but less of a warranty. REI gear for the most part is very solid for the price and we’ll made with exceptions here and there. I own many REI gear and I love them.

I picked up the discontinued version of the Flash1 tent the other month for the crazy price of under $150. Couldn't pass up the deal. I have a Nemo Dagger 3P for when I go with the kids, but wanted another small tent if I want separate space. I read complaints of condensation, but I am on the west coast, so we dont deal with humidity much. Excited to go test it out. Thanks for testing it out and I'm impressed with the waterproofness of the tent for the weight. REI makes some great gear. I also picked up the 30 degree Magma quilt for half off last year. Good tent review dan! Reminds me of kind of a funny story. Years back 8yrs or so, my uncle and my brother and i went on this camp trip and while we were out there we ran across this random Rei tent all setup way back in the woods. It was completely empty of gear etc,.. We all thought thats kinda strange so we looked inside dry as a bone. Nice quality too but was like a 4 man rei tent. Anyways we left it there of course and 5 or so months later my uncle went back up there for another backpacking trip and bam that tent was still there all setup like it was before and still dry as a bone inside! Suffice to say this time he took it down, packed it up best he could and brought it home. He gave it to my brother who then used it for atleast 2 years with no troubles before he bought something smaller. I still think its crazy how well this abandoned rei tent held up! It was either orange and white or yellow if i remember correctly?... Very high quality overall imo. That kinda sealed the deal how i feel about most Rei tents. They are def worth buying! Stay safe my friend! Hike on!!

This review was okay, but there was no indication for how the tent handles condensation since you didn't sleep in it for even a single night. I like REI gear. I think they provide a decent middle ground between complete junk in big box stores and high end super expensive gear. Having said that, if I were shopping for a single person tent in this price range, I think I would opt for the Durston X-Mid 1. Price is lower, pitch is simpler, head room is better, and it's right around the same weight.

I’ve got 2 REI Base Camp tents (a 4- and a 6-person) that I got used at REI Garage sales once we started having kids. Paid $150-$200 for each of them (they’re crazy expensive otherwise). The 4-person tent is at least 10 years old now and I’ve had zero issues with it so far. And it’s taken quite a beating from having 3 little boys camping in it 5-6 times a year for all these years. I did notice the seam tape on the floor was starting to turn white when I used it last weekend, so it may leak on me in the next year or two. But these tents have served me really well.

Thanks for the review Sir. It wasn't a big deal for me, but figured I would mention, since you are using a Big Agnes pad. My Big Agnes sleeping bag that fits onto my big agnes pad has a left hand zipper. With these asymmetrical designs, that means your zipper is on the opposite side of the tent entry. Ideally if a zipper is on a side, the right side would be preferable. Probably more important for mummy bags that are a little tighter. My big Agnes bag is roomy, so I can easily squirm out of it. thanks for the review... I wont use a tent enough to justify a top end model as I use a hammock when possible and this REI fit the bill perfectly at $225-250 on sale. even with inflatable thermal sleeping pad its a little smaller and lighter than my hammock set up and being on the ground I didn't need as large of a top quilt like I would in the hammock in Spring. Made it on a 430 mile bike trip that started Memorial Day weekend and no way I would have found perfect camp space with trees on such a busy weekend. I still prefer the Hammock for the woods but this will be an great option, packs so tiny with the poles on bike frame I could see taking it on trips I plan on getting hotels just in case.

My first backpacking tent was an REI Quarter Dome 2 and I loved that tent but I decided I wanted something that didn't have a tapered floor. I returned the Quarter Dome 2 after a few uses and got a Nemo Dagger 2P (not UL but my wife and I split it) that was on sale for nearly the same price. I absolutely love the Dagger but I do really miss the Quarter Dome 2's rain fly vent that could be opened from the inside without getting up.

This one is great in low humidity times. It has issues with condensation build up and heavy "sprinkling" during night rains hitting the outside.

Although I like (some) REI gear, 19 square feet is too small. I prefer 25 with 21 the absolute minimum. Not sleeping in it misses a condensation test. Pretty important with this kind of tent. Too bad The North Face O2 is discontinued. One of my favorite tents of all time. Tom Loves DIY.

I've had a Half Dome 3+ for several years. Great tents that I recommend to all my scouting families for durability and ease of assembly. I spend 3-6 nights a month, every month except maybe January in it. It's been through the full range of Michigan weather and has yet to fail me in any way. It's my go to camping tent. I use Big Agnes UL2 Copper Spur tents for backpacking solo for weight savings but if I were going with two people in a tent I would take it and split the weight.

I have the lighter version of the half dome for 2 and its epic. Love it but have trips where I won't split the tent weight. Got the Flash Air 2 on sale for the older version to test out this month on a very short section of the PCT. Wanted lower weight but extra space and the option to omit tent poles in trade of trekking poles.

I've had the flash air 2 for a couple years. The condensation can be rough as it's single wall but it's a good light tent

As a die hard REI fan that owns a passage 2 and Kingdom 6, I think there are better backpacking* tents on the market. It’s great to earn a dividend and the return policy is second to none, but for a similar price I’d argue the Durston X-Mid 2 is a better investment. If you’re looking for gear to get you into camping/backpacking, you should check out REI’s gear rental program. That being said, I love my REI tents and know they’ll last a long time with proper care.

Well impressed with the size of that tent and the waterproofness. To be fair I would spray on/paint extra waterproofing anyway. That leakage is an easy fix?

Great review! There is always some translation lost between the manufacturer's country and the US hence the weight and description differences. Stay safe and God bless!

I have an earlier version of this tent. Mine weighs 1.5 lb with the tent, poles minus center pole and my substituted lighter 7 stakes, no stuff sacks. Maybe the weight discrepancy came in with the newer version. I don't think I had any leaking on two wet trips but it would be hard to tell because under those condition I have gotten significant condensation. I just have a small towel and wipe as much as I can before I sit up. I am 5'4" and this tent works well for me but I wouldn't make my 5'11" son use it because I think it would be too tight for him. When it sags from rain and has condensation, I don't think taller people would be happy unless they have it pitched perfectly which as you noted is a bit challenging. I got mine on sale or $214. For taller people, I agree with the commenter who suggested the Durston instead. I got one of those for my son to use.

Wonder if there was some residual moisture included in that weight? What did you do to dry out the tent? Of course if you were stuck out in the rain then the tent would definitely weigh more on the next day.

I have a REI Flash 55 backpack that I have been very happy with for several years now. After borrowing backpacks from friends and doing swaps while we hike I have no regrets with my purchase. Also, several of my hiking buddies have replaced their packs with the Flash 55. If REI gear is a rebrand I have not been able to identify what they are rebrands of.

The Flash 2, IMO, is better. Less issues with condensation, plenty of room for gear, 2 doors, or I can bring the dog. I’m general, REI makes pretty good stuff. I haven’t had any water issues, or pooling but I do make adjustments.

How did you calibrate your scale? Was the tent completely dry when you weighed it? Would have been a better review if you actually slept in it while it was raining. Looking at the methods used in evaluation.
