I have an issue with you Mr Turner. Every time you make a video in Scotland you make this 63 year old well-up! It is your passion and emotion for our special little country that gets me all the time, not to mention the fantastic images. Your point about landscape photographers being in the minority was a great one. Most people who view your images, who buy your calendars, won't have seen a photograph of Buachaille Etive Mòr (landscape orientation for me BTW) or the three sisters before. These are the people who matter, these are the people who'll pay money for your images. I don't understand landscape photographers who don't like photographing Glencoe because 'it's been photographed before' look at the images you've produced in this visit, they're stunning, who wouldn't be inspired and awe struck by these images? Great video, can't wait for next weeks. Thank you and well done.

I much preferred the composition of the portrait version but the light was better in the landscape shot. If you could have the light of the one and comp of the other then it would be sublime. I live quite near GlenCoe (less than an hour away) and have climbed all the mountains but have never taken these honeypot shots. I'm usually too busy heading north or possibly turning off for the exquisite and vastly underrated Glen Etive. I must take a day to just stop and properly explore the 'Coe.

I love this mountain. I've photographed it from the waterfall, hiked past it on the West Highland Way (twice), stood on the summit and photographed it on a snowy February sunrise from Beinn a Chrulaiste. So many great memories. I liked the landscape image better mate, a bit more breathing space in it. Great video, thanks for sharing as always.

The landscape for sure! the holes in the dirt brings up a topic in a hiking group I follow. "leave nothing but footprints" is a motto for hikers. Some of the most popular trails where I live have serious erosion due to hikers using trekking poles. I never use the metal studs on my tripods (or trekking poles) for this reason. I know it is a personal thing but I am always environmentally aware.

Most are rubber tipped and some people really need them and can't go without them .
@johnbeattyphotos
@johnbeattyphotos Год назад
@@Globetrotter-1 100% on rubber tips. Not saying there is scientific evidence that spikes vs rubber provide better stability with tripods, in my experience I have not seen it. The only time I have resorted to spikes has been in moving water. As for flashy colors, it comes down to personal style and safety. I tend to stay on trails to promote trail integrity and land management. I do go off-trail for hazard avoidance and photo ops (carefully). As for the trekking poles, I don't know about brain/muscles things but they provide balance control and put less stress on knees and, here in the south (US), we have very nasty snakes that going in the brush without a pole of some kind is not a good idea.

Like you said, most people won't have seen them,, and they're shot so often for a very good reason. There's no reason not to have them in your portfolio. In fact, I'd say it's important to HAVE them! Have travelled through Glencoe on numerous occasions en route to Orkney and I defy anyone to not stop and take in the awe of it. Buachaille Etive Mòr is one of the most iconic peaks in Scotland and for any photographer not to have an image of it in their portfolio would be unforgivable 😉⛰️ The Three Sisters are difficult without a wide angle lens. Glencoe in my opinion depicts Scotland in all its beauty and it’s not surprising it’s been photographed to death. Preferred the portrait shot as it concentrated on Buachaille itself more, personally I think Glencoe has the most jaw dropping scenery in the UK 👌 If you drive past it without stopping to take an image you have no soul 😉

Hi Henry, What a great video! I just love the Highlands. Well, my favorite of the mountain is actually the third one. Wow! Every element in it draws your eye in toward the focal point - the clouds converging from both directions, the water, the darker green bank on the left, the light at the foot of the mountain - all those things work so well together. As for the other two, I actually like the landscape version the best. I pay attention to how my eye is drawn in. With the vertical, in moves in way too fast, and then the mountain is so dark that it is like a sudden, visual stop. In the other, I find myself meandering in, and then the mountain is not as dark and so it allows me to continue on through the image. It is less abrupt, and more peaceful and pleasant. I really enjoy your videos. You inspire my painting and my own videography. Thank you!

Well now, Henry, both landscape and portrait aspects of your Glencoe photograph have their individual merits, and for me, the portrait aspect gives a 'dark moody' atmosphere whereas the landscape aspect with sunlight slopes invokes an uplift of the spirit - so on that ephemeral basis alone the landscape wins. Man, if we could bottle your enthusiasm and joy, clean energy would be solved for the next generation. I am fortunate enough to live a few hours from Yosemite National Park, so I can relate when it comes to heavily traveled photographic subjects, complete with the inevitable consciousness of Ansel Adams in the back of my head. As for the first question about which photo did we prefer, well I prefered the landscape one only because I think it would look much better hanging on my living room wall :). the portrait version was terrific too but both photos actually (to me anyway) seemed to have different priorities, the Landscape one seemed to have the waterfalls as the main point of focus and the portrait one seemed to have the Mountain.....its just what I seen, probably me talking crap though lol, what do I know eh :) . I prefer the landscape version, it feels like it draws me into the photo better.

They're both amazing, but I have to choose the landscape version.

Hard to choose. In the case of story i choose portret. And in the case of showing the erea i choose landscape.

Hello my friend! Quick question.. You know by now that I'm a mobility scooter user. Are there any good places to take landscape photographs in Scotland without having to go off the beaten track, and climb mountains and stuff? Just scenes that I could photograph from a lay-by for instance. That's a bit of an ambiguous question, and probably quite a daft one! Of course there's scenes like that, this is Scotland! But can you think of anywhere specific?

Am I the only one who finds the volume in your videos too low? 😥
