I Walked to Scotland, Alone...

Tired of modern quick form content from tiktok and instagram? i know i am... Join me in this film following me north on my first solo backpacking adventure on the Pennine Way, a 268 mile national trail through the rocky spine of England and into Scotland.
In August/September 2022 i set out on this mission without any real knowledge as to how my brain would cope with micromanaging decisions by myself and motivating myself to move forward.
I know im quite rough and rugged with my filming and storytelling and i hope the audio faults dont bother people to much, i dont have the best equipment so i do what i can.
I hope you enjoy this journey as much as i did and please let me know what you think afterwards. :)

I just came across this video. I'm 37 now and haven't done any long distance trails for a good few years. But in my 20s in university holidays and early work years I did coast to coast, Pennine way, hadrians wall etc. All on my own, as a single woman. And now watching this is bringing up a weird sense of loss and grief in me that I wasn't expecting. I was totally fine disappearing into the hills on my own 15yrs ago. I met some interesting people, one old guy will definitely be dead now - he was completing the last section, he'd started it with his late wife years before. Quite possibly another chap who i walked with is dead now too, or at least extremely elderly. Who knows what the others are doing now. Now, I'm not sure if I could do it. Some of that grief/loss feeling is because of changes in my life - my parents drove me to the start of the Pennine way - I lost my dad 3 years ago, my mum is getting older now in mid 70s. Just that one act of kindness in driving me 2 hours to leave me in edale is a sweet memory. Some iffy relationships have come and gone, one of which involved arguably much bigger adventures - mont blanc, big cycling trips. That's gone too. I have no doubt I could physically do it, I'm much fitter now than then. But the thought of the solitude doesn't fill me with a sense of excitement like it did. I think it'd compound the loss I'm currently feeling. I don't know. Maybe some day again.

You certainly have some Stories and experience under your belt :) I wonder if you could ignite that spark again and find some enjoyment in solitude it might be very freeing 🥰🤞🏼

Im 36 only one year behind and I am doing long distance walks, dont stop yet, just build up your fitness and get back out on the trails. You can do it. I bet you have some amazing stories to tell. The solitude will actually help you refocus and cherish the memories you once had.
@85parrot
@85parrot 7 месяцев назад
@@livingonthetyne I did, early this summer! Did the Ribble way. My fitness was never going to be a problem, I've done a lot more long distance running since I used to backpack. But doing 30+ miles a day for 3 days, with kit, was a bit too much in hindsight. Was good but I would have enjoyed it more if I'd taken another day over it.

I have to apologise for the rugged audio in patches it’s because I need to repair some equipment, I hope you can appreciate how hard it is to put this sort of thing together when you’re knackered and hiking 15 hours a day. If you like it tell your friend, your family and cats

I so enjoyed your journey - you tell a great story and you are a talented film maker. As others have said: you should be proud of yourself! And to pick up on one self-deprecating/self-doubting comment you made below - I didn't find anything self-indulgent about your making yourself the subject of the film. You also featured the trail and the landscapes and the weather as key subjects and gave a great sense of both the epic views and the small details, along with the trials and tribulations of completing a long trail. Anyhow - I'll be back for more and I'm sure you will grow a good following, if that is part of the plan!

Thank you for perfectly highlighting the difficulties of solo long distance hiking. I used to be addicted to drugs but changed my life around and done that through long distance hiking. Most people expect it to be all rosey and some people only talk about the high points, but there are lots of difficulties in long distance hiking, and being solo is one of them. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing for me, I actually enjoy the fact that it's difficult as I discover something different about myself every time I finish a long distance hike. An excellent video, and it made me realise I'm not alone in feeling that way sometimes, so thank you again for being honest and looking forward to more videos in the future

I love walking alone across wild areas been doing it over 30 years. I also very much like walking long distance with other people but there's something special about being alone. You can do what you want when you want, stop when you want, stare at something fir no reason. You can think your own thoughts uninterrupted, find yourself and learn to accept yourself as you are not as some illusion created by being with someone else. I think you can deeply appreciate things, maybe face your own demons down, if sub-consciously at times. You then appreciate the interaction you do have with people when you bump into someone, although I prefer not to when out walking and would rather choose to meet people by going into a pub to stay a night occasionally. Then I appreciate them. I'm 60 and I think to some extent we learnt to be alone more in my generation. I think parents tended to expect kids to entertain themselves. I notice that many younger people feel less able to do things without others and that kids are ferried everywhere by parents to entertain them. Are they less self reliant and able to be alone?
@lamboways
@lamboways Год назад
I don’t think I could’ve said it better myself, especially the part where you mention facing some demons. I feel like it forced me to have a harsh word with myself at times and I actually think that’s done me good

Some people can't be alone for more than 5 minutes because they are about as deep as a puddle and they are terrified of having to think how insecure they are. This is especially true of this millennial generation.
@mattwright2964
@mattwright2964 Год назад
@@blackporscheroadster-yw8hb I think you may be right on that. I'm not sure its healthy how much parents are pandering to kids nowadays. I see it amongst relatives and friends. That said my generation's parents were probably a bit too aloof and unwilling to express emotions. There might be a happy medium. I don't like slagging off millienials though in so much as I feel we have to try and guide them if we can. I guess "guide" is a good word in terms of travelling and walking as well.

@@mattwright2964 There's a youngish girl (late 20s) lives rent free next door to me. It's her parent's flat. She is hardly ever in and either stays at her boyfriend's or parents overnight. Never does ANY cooking. Never seen her come in with food shopping. She goes to her parents or boyfriends to eat. Can't spend more than 5 minutes alone and if she does she's on her phone or watching TV. Shallow as a puddle and utterly self-absorbed. She did a doss Art degree at some Mickey Mouse University and thinks she's Einstein. (I went to a proper University when you had to be genuinely smart to get it.) Cracking video. Make the most of them 30mile days because your body will tell you NO when you do them in the future 😂. I did a 27 in 2020 and my feet tore up and my hamstrings hated me. That was a section of the west highland way covering the full length of Loch Lomond. I rarely go over 15 miles now.

A really nice watch. After going on a few solo hikes now, I’m always overcome by the feeling of loneliness. And it wasn’t until recently that I found other people share this feeling.

When I was 21years old I decided to travel across Siberia, in Outer Mongolia and into China. Love the British countryside, hills and mountains there is a certain pleasure in hiking alone at your own pace, taking in the views. I I the Pennine way last year and the Three Yorkshire Peaks and the West Highland Way. Beautiful in every way. Love it! You learn so much about yourself when you o it with only your thoughts. I did the walking out of season so saw very few people on rout. Loved your video and you should feel around of yourself. Well done!

So there’s me planning my first 3 - 4 day section hike on the Cumbria Way, thinking it’s a big deal, then the algorithm pops you up smashing the whole Pennine Way with 30 mile days etc. 😒😂. I enjoyed your video, great job.

As someone who is also trying to capture the essence of the walks I do via my own fledgling RU-vid channel, I can confirm you are doing an excellent job. I’m much older than you (64) and although I’ve been doing hikes of this nature since the age of 14 it’s only recently that I’ve been filming. It definitely makes it harder as you have to concentrate on something other than just putting one foot in front of the other. Back in the day though the gear was massively heavier so embracing a lightweight culture as you have is the right thing to do. I’m about to set of on Hadrians Wall next month, that section looks great on your film mate. Well done 👍 Subscribed.
@lamboways
@lamboways Год назад
Thanks for watching and good luck and have fun on Hadrians wall, the 15 mile section I did of that trail during PW was absolutely break-taking. I agree, sometimes I wish I didn’t have the pressure of trying to create and I realise now my gear is 2.5kg heavier just in camera equipment so I’ll definitely never be an ultra lighter 😂 but tbh once I put together these and the memories they provide I’m glad I do it

@@lamboways It’s definitely worth it even if it’s just for your own playback when you’re older. I wish I’d got a recording of hiking the Cleveland Way with my Dad when he was still alive for example. Back in the day we had to write a report to send in to prove we’d completed a walk in order to get a souvenir badge. That was it really, I still have some of them which is better than nothing.

Thank you for sharing. It brought back some very happy memories for me when I did it 8 years ago. The joy never goes away. I allowed myself 20 days and stayed in b&b's so it was easier than camping. I hope you'll wear walking boots next time you do one!

@Lamboways From Edale. I was very lucky with the weather; getting only about two and a half days of proper rain on the whole walk. I just watched your walk in Skye. Great video. I was up the week before Easter and climbed Bruache na Frithe (last did it 30 years ago). I won't be doing that again, probably. I still want to do another long distance walk. Not sure if I still have the puff!

great job, and a really inspiring watch. My father - dead now - did this trail soon after it was named, just slept rough on the ground or wherever he could. He inspired a love of walking in me, and though I've walked bits of the PenWay, my longest trail has been the SW Coast Path. Anyway, well done on an incredibly tough achievement.

Beautiful story about your father. The likes of him are who we have to thank for these trails growing and becoming what they are today 🥰 I met a man who did it many moons ago and said there was no stone paths through the moorland etc and was often knee deep in muk for miles on end. Incredibly strong willed
