Glad you love Tiong Bahru, it's hawker is my favourite one in Singapore. There are many good food there, i used to go there every morning for breakfast. Let me intro u to my fav (personal fav) In the market: 1. 238 coffee stall #02-81 , best coffee here 2. Yuan ji 源记 fishball noodle #02-72, simple old school but v tasty. (Had been eating with this minced meat noodle kway teow soup from uncle and aunt for over a decade) 3. Tiong bahru Lor Mee #02-80 (a lot of ppl love 178 lor mee, but i tried both many times and come to the conclusion I preferred Tiong Bahru Lor Mee next to 238 coffee, the gravy is nicer and more ingredients) 4. Hwa yuen porridge #02-78 good decent and piping hot porridge. 5. Teck Seng Soya bean milk #02-69 , must try their ultra smooth bean curb bowl 6. Koh brother pig's organ soup #02-29 worth a try, their glutinous rice in pig's intestine 7. Zhong yu yuan wei wanton noodle #02-30 Wanton noodle is so so but do try their signature 不见天, delicious. 8. HarisAnn Delights #02-25 loads up all your fav nonya kueh here, i recommend their onek onek 9. Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh #02-02, as it's name, try their traditional rice kueh and soon kueh with sweet sauce and chilli. Outside along the road, 1. Ah Chang Porridge 65 Tiong Poh Road 2. Por Kee eating house 69 Seng poh lane 3. Old Tiong Bahru BKT 58 Seng Poh Road 4. Loo's Hainanese Curry rice and There is a Mee Pok stall here also nice 71 Seng poh road Enjoy!
@@Alexis-rh7nz thanks for your approval. Do add on as my list only cover the good food in the morning as i m usually there around 7 to 8am. I know afternoon there are many other stall open that r nice too but i have yet try them. Heard that the Fried hokkien mee n the chicken rice along the row of 238 coffee is nice.
Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest districts in Singapore, I used to visit grand parent who lived there while I was a kid; it brought back great memories. Great to see the revival of a old neighborhood, thanks for the video!
Ghib San, you finally made it to TB. Bring Oksan & in-laws to eat Loo's Curry Rice next time. Best time is around 11am. Good luck to house-shopping. Gambate kudasai ne.
The shrine is dedicated to the Monkey God in chinese folklore. It’s the same figure that was the inspiration behind Son Goku in Dragonball. (Many of the characters and incidents in Dragonball were linked to the chinese novel Journey to the West)
Thank you for doing all things about Singapore, as an ex -Singaporean ( migrated 32 years ago) even tough we returned for visit pretty much every year through your video we can see much more and about to find out more food outlets.
Tiong Bahru needs more than 12 minutes. Your overseas viewers would like the nonya kuehs from Galicier and eat mee pok at a coffee shop that was used to film “Mee Pok Man” which turns into a yakitori at night. Happy house hunting!
Tiong Bahru vibe is like no other. Love the place, the quiet spots where you can chill and enjoy the scenery. Walking around Tiong Bahru is always a pleasure. Looking forward to your revisit. Keep it up Ghib-san!
Singapore is such a small place, yet you always make it seem so interesting with your simple videos. This is something that even local television channel can't even hope to do since the shows are usually fake and staged. Your videos are spontaneous and authentic which makes them so special.
personally i love the east side. grew up here, 40 years here. and many singaporeans also agree katong which is in the east has many amazing makan options
Excellent coverage of Tiong Bahru heritage area, especially with all many wonderful hawker food. Though I’d add on 1 shop to spice things up. There’s this noodle shop called “Shannxi Noodles”. Although its from China, they have this noodle called “Biang Biang mian (面)”. What makes this intriguing is the character “Biang”... which is perhaps the MOST complex Chinese character with 57 strokes. Check out the noodles... its quite special ! On top of all the great food highlighted. Tiong Bahru is definitely one of many S’porean foodie favourites.
Oh yessss Tiong Bahru market and hawker centre , please visit again in the morning for the siewmai as u crave for. Also try walk along the Bukit Ho Swee area (where I live) , have nice Hainanese curry rice and a nice Chinese temple along the stretch of Havelock Road there
I went to school in the area and fell in love with the old SIT flats there and in Bukit Merah. I always wanted to live one of those when I grew up. And then I grew up, and those flats became so expensive (while many got demolished) and out of my budget. 😢
I think you respect n love your mother-in-law alot as you always mention your mother-in-law in your videos. I hope your wife will not be jealous of her mother. Haha..Tiong Bahru is a nice place to live in as it has lots of good food and is central of Singapore. The houses there are rather expensive.
Welcome to Tiong Bahru! If you come by another time, some recommendations for TB: in Hawker- Teck Seng Soya Bean Milk (uncle's tao huey zui is very tok gong-teach you new word) - sells out before noon in Hawker- HarriAnn's Delight (Nonya Kueh & Glutinous Rice-ask for sweet+savoury mixed-uncle Harry has opened outlets already but this is his flagship) - also sells out before noon Others have mentioned, in one of the coffeeshops around the area, there's Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice (wah this is FAVOURITE! must try the pork chop okay) and Galicier (it is also good) Another viewer mentioned Beo Crescent, if you come here.. in the hawker, there's Kia Xiang Du Du (Tutu Kueh-order the big ones, coconut/peanut both are very good), plenty of good mains option - carrot cake, lor mee (request to top up for more of the crunchy topping), spinach soup noodles etc.. in the block beside the hawker, there's No Name Hainanese Curry Rice (if you prefer crunchy pork chop..this is for you) and Happy Oven bakery..there's many more- I haven't even mention the 'L' shaped hawker!
Hi Ghib, I watched your video for quite some time now and I would like to say that enjoy watching your video a lot. It helps me (foreigner) to explore Singapore more and getting to know here better 😊 thank you and keep it up!
Since you are so intrigued by the air raid shelters, fyi HDB blocks built in the late 80's also have public air raid shelters built into the basements below the void decks. This building plan was carried out for about a decade till it switched to the current plan of building bomb shelter "rooms" within each individual flat. These basement air raid shelters are currently still in place, often occupied by minimarts, childcare and tuition centers during peacetime, with clauses built into the leases for tenants to have to clear out within a certain amount of time should the authorities declare emergencies. They are rather inconspicuous though with just a door at the void decks. To find them you need to know which are the blocks built in the 80's-90's. This is an interesting topic that you may want to make a video about.
The office/hospital workers loves Tiong Bahru Market. If you are early bird, must try Teck Seng Soya bean milk's soya pudding. It's always sold out early morning. Even the soya milk is also sold out before 12pm. Highly recommended places nearby: Loo hainanese curry rice and Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry.
My in-laws stay there, one of the other units beside the ones you climbed up. In the food centre, you should try Koh Brothers Pig Organ soup and Lor Mee (with shark meat). Also, the famous Ah Chang Porridge along Tiong Poh Road. At your last stop, you should walk to the other end. Foodie market is there and you can buy value for money meat - cheapest in Singapore.
There’s a charming bookshop - Books Actually, in Tiong Bahru. It has an amazing collection, especially on Singapore Literature. It also has many cute antique stuffs. It is now temporarily closed due circuit breaker. Hopefully it’ll be back in operation the next time you visit.
Hi Glib, Thanks for doing a take of my neighbourhood. I believe its one of the most unique one in Singapore. If youre looking into touring the homes there, hit me up and i'll gladly welcome you in to have a tour in it. Arigato Gozaimasu!
I recommend Sumo Big Prawn from Ang Mo Kio 628 Market. They sell lobster/crayfish noodles. Prices can go up to 35 bucks for a bowl. Seems a little steep for a noodle stall in a hawker centre, but their serving is generous and the prawn stock is packed full of fresh prawn flavour! Also, Plain Vanilla Bakery has the best cupcakes I've ever had. Most cupcakes r dry and boring, but their cupcakes look really exquisite, most importantly, MOIST. Some of the flavours such as cinnamon brown sugar (my favourite!) are a tad on the sweet side tho.
The low Tiong Bahru apartments are what the old uncle told you as "Pre-HDB Flats", they were the first few public housing that Singaore Govt built in 50s-60s to quickly house the village (to be honest...slums) community there, so they look uniquely different from the other typical HDB blocks.
My wife and I stayed on Bukit Pasoh Rd near to Outram Park, stay in the New Majestic Hotel, which sadly is no more. Loved the area. Missing the Peranakan food.
Great that you point out that tray returning are still greatly encouraged everywhere to assist the elderly cleaners (eg on your NUS town food court video) You walked past on several occasions including Tiong Bahru Hawker Center where there are tray return system making it easier for the next diners and ease the workload of the Cleaners. But there are numerous occasions Japanese dining at Tiong Bahru Hawker Center left without clearing their trays?? Why the great disparity when you do it in Japan and not when you’re in Singapore?? So pls share with our fellow residents it’s only humanely right to do the right thing not because you’re forced to but it’s the right thing to do. Also emphasising the point (with the Taiwanese video) Singaporeans do stick to the rules and that’s a great Singaporean trademark! 皆さん、トレイを返却してください‼︎
IKR ! I never tried their food before they participated the tv show, but i think the one now is very good. The good mix of chili and fried shallots, potent soup, fresh prawns, and most important it is not expensive. A little strange they don't get much queue though, probably most customers go for the stall next to them... 😅
@@ixactan69 I like the way they prepare the sauce on another bowl and they pour on the noodle instead of putting the noodles on the sauce and use the ladle to stir the noodles.
Omg I live here! Please do come back to tiong bahru more often! There are so much food at the hawker centre u have to try! I love the shark meat lor mee (the one with really long queue)
Tiong Bahru estate is one of the oldest housing estate, if not oldest. Most tourist likely know it for the Tiong Bahru Market/hawker centre. The hawker centre is spacious with many choices of food, but I won't highly recommend it though. I find the place overhyped. I rather you walk over to Redhill Hawker Centre or Beo Crescent Hawker Centre. Both are more heartland residential, so it may not be as neat though... Having said that, Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre does have some nice food. "Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Noodles", "Min Nan Pork Ribs and Prawn Noodles" - you ate this! 😁 , "Teck Seng Soya Bean Milk", "Tian Cheng Food". I highly recommend to try Mua Chee from "Tian Cheng Food". They are handmade, extremely fresh melt in the mouth good. Mua Chee is something like Japanese Mochi, but there is no filling inside. Instead it is sprinkled with peanuts and sugar. The temple you passed by. It is praying to the Monkey God, who is also Son Goku (孫悟空) Not wanting to scare you, the housing in this area. They are mostly SUPER EXPENSIVE...
Next time you can do a vlog, like how you did for the Chinatown Complex, cos there is really many good foods in the market. A must-try in Tiong Bahru is the famous "Jian Bo Shui Kueh" located at #02-05. It's actually steamed rice cakes with preserved radish, and this dish is what Tiong Bahru is famous for. Whenever people mention Tiong Bahru, they would think of the rice cakes.
Tiong Bahru is a nice place but expensive as it's near city. There are many foreigners because of the many new condominiums. The shop you thought looked like a bar is PS Cafe, an expensive cafe.
Just some interesting bits. Seems the word "Tiong", which means cemetary/grave, is the Hokkien pronunciation of the word 塚/冢. It means a big grave/cemetary on higher ground etc. And funnily enough, it is found in the Japanese last name 大塚. So does the name mean a really really big grave in Japanese?
I love this neighbourhood and live very close by. I walk by dog in the Tiong Bahru estate daily. If you are going to make another video, do also feature Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry, Blk 55 Tiong Bahru Rd, #01-39, 160055. I am so sure you will love their traditional nonya kueh.
I like u said the croissant at Tiong Bahru bakery is better than u had in Italy! Haven't been to Italy yet but definitely better than other cafes. The butter croissant is the best I've tried.
Like attracts like. You will bump into nice people frequently because people of similar traits/profiles will watch your channel. And when they bump into you, you will realise they have a common vibe amongst them.
I think I haven’t seen you explore Jalan Besar area? from the hip cafes /bars along Tyrwhitt Road to those lanes between Jalan Besar and Serangoon Road. Somewhat regret to say that you won’t get the views like that of a Sunday night when the south Asian workers used to gather in full force. Mebbe due to these workers, I somehow feel this area isn’t as gentrified yet when compared to Tiong Bahru. Oh yah , for good food can try the Sungei Road laksa at Blk 27 Jalan Berseh.. $3 for a small bowl but has Long history plus their way of cooking the broth over charcoal. This is the other laksa stall that has quite a reputation apart from Katong. Another institution is Swee Choon dim sum
