I’ve always felt it was unfair that Anna was punished but the mom was content to let the little brother get away with all his shenanigans. Yeah, Anna has an attitude, but it’s also true that her mother does a pretty lousy job of listening to Anna until she experiences a day in her shoes. Which is the point of the movie, I suppose. Also on the door front, that’s sure fire way to guarantee your kid never tells you anything.
@BoxOKittens
@BoxOKittens 2 года назад
Agreed. I grew up in a house where I, the eldest daughter, constantly got in trouble for just not smiling or being enthusiastic enough, but my little brother could do or say anything and get away with it. It's a terrible family dynamic but sadly too common.

I agree. I think with the little brother, he was very sweet around the mom, and didn't necessarily seem to misbehave in general, he just liked messing with his sister a lot (which honestly is normal), but Anna didn't really take anything laying down, but Anna was kind of an a-hole to her mother and future step-father. I wouldn't necessarily consider taking a door abuse, but you will end up with a very resentful and angry teenager, you basically left her nowhere to cool down, or just be.

The funny thing is, if you establish open honest communication with your kids from a young age, they won't feel the need to hide anything. If you make them feel like telling you something gets them in trouble, then they hide stuff. My mom was VERY over the top, (would read my diary and use the entries to make fun of me, VERY limited internet access even as an 18 year old, wasn't allowed a cell phone until 19 when I paid for it myself, would pretend to be me when talking to my friends and set up things to do that had nothing to do with me or my interests, and if I EVER said I didn't feel well or that something was wrong, her go to response was to say in a mocking tone "Victimized! I've been victimized!". The list goes on and on) but because of the way she acted whenever I tried to talk to her, I bottled everything up and hide my feelings inside. To this day I still don't openly talk about my own wants or feelings and I'm 27!

I dont think privacy should be a privilege for anyone not even children, people sometimes act like children arent people and their development is still in transformation while theyre young. If you Make their privacy a privilege and remove their door, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU AINT DISCIPLINING YOUR MONSTER SON, youre teaching your child that their safety and peace does not matter. Like I equate the lack of ability to have a space for themself and be able to wall themselves off from conflict and peepers to you basically saying Their body and their space is not their own. Children need to have boundaries too.

Idk if taking a kids door away is abuse, but its a red flag for an abusive parent imo. I get it if you have a kid who's really gone down a dark path maybe (drugs and whatnot), but if you've got a regular teenager you will destroy trust by using something like that as a punishment. Stripping away their privacy is like stripping away a piece of their safety. I really wouldn't suggest it.

I mean my mom did the same thing to me in high school. I didn't appreciate it at the time. But I was super disrespectful to my mom at times. I definitely think that Anna and her mom should have had some heart to heart discussions about how they felt. Instead of ignoring how each other felt. My adoptive mom was also a psychologist who was a single parent. And sometimes she treated me like her clients instead of her daughter. Especially since I was dealing with mental health issues such as OCD and autism spectrum disorder. We definitely argued but we loved each other. We ended up watching Freaky Friday together a lot when I was in high school.

The idea of removing a child's door is buck ass wild to me. I grew up with a door that has no lock, so sometimes my parents would come in without me knocking and have accidentally caught me changing. Imagine having no door and the rest of the family CONSTANTLY seeing you change? The alternative would be going to the bathroom to change every morning and every night. Not to mention Lindsey's character was living with a soon-to-be step-dad, so it was probably equally uncomfortable for him that she was in that situation (not equally uncomfortable, she was likely more disturbed, but you get the point). It's just... insane. What if you're having a bad day and want to cry? Then everyone can see you cry. And her brother ALREADY disrespects her space and goes through her things. Their mom just signalled that it's okay, so he'll never have any repercussions if that's the precedent! Sorry for the rant, I genuinely cannot grasp the idea of no-door. Hell, at least give her a fucking CURTAIN or parititian/room divider so she can have SOME semblance of healthy boundaries away from the rest of the family (not to mention potential guests).

My door got taken off when I was 14/15, I think it was because when I danced in my room the floor would creek. Ngl I reacted the exact same way. Then I used newspapers and blankets to try to recreate a door, which my parents kept tearing down because "that's not the point of the punishment", but I kept putting it back up. After about 2 days I nearly broke into tears explaining why I needed my door (I was bullied in school and had a strained relationship with my parents, so I'd listen to music and dance to escape but only felt comfortable doing that where I couldn't be seen) my mum took pity on me and gave me back my door. I remember my stepdad looking pissed off with that decision, my mum apologised to me then added on the end why it was necessary, which felt like a bit of a let me excuse myself, but honestly I was just happy to have my door back. Felt so uncomfortable when it was off.

She's meant to be a therapist character and somehow she's one of the worst cinema mum's I swear. She does not know how to raise kids healthily at all, imo I'd count that as abuse, she has no interest in getting to the truth just punishing what she sees on the surface, like treating the symptoms not the cause, and she's meant to be a doctor. Oof. Cast was good for this one, but I get too strong second hand embarrassment to enjoy it now, plus the problematic parts, plus when I was a kid and watched this I got way too scared at the possibility of this happening, this quickly became one of my biggest fears growing up, being suddenly switched with someone else. Dude I can barely handle being just myself I could not handle being someone completely else, being landed completely unprepared in the deep end To the casting tho, Jamie Lee Curtis wasn't the original casting for the mum and she was brought in very short notice so she had very little time to prepare for the role and yet we still got a masterpiece performance, also she actually knows how to play the guitar she's actually playing it in that scene

privacy is not a privilege, privacy is a right! children and teenagers are still human beings and people tend to forget that. if you are a great parent and knows how to guide your kid during all their phases, than they don't feel the need of hiding and locking doors. my mother always made me feel like i could trust her, and that she never would cross any of my boudries, so i've never felt like i had to do anything behind her back. and she did it without me even realizing it! i only started to notice that when i grew up and started to talk with other friends about it. taking off her door was way off limits, defenitly not something a parent should do; but that's kinda of the point of the movie, both of them starting to understand the other is an actual person, with feelings and all the shit. (because we kids also tend to forget our parents are also human.)

TLDR: if you want kids to respect you, you gotta respect them first. I fully understand wanting your kids to respect you, but how can you expect that respect if you don’t show it? Kids should be appreciative, but they *ARE* entitled to respect as much as any adult. Honestly, more. Bc when kids are disrespectful, they’re still learning and going through a lot of emotional changes/development. When adults are, they know better. And regardless of how sh*tty your kids being, you can’t just stop caring about their needs. If your kid is actually being a problem, tough love for sure, but on-purpose making them miserable until they obey is not that. It’s just straight up emotional abuse. And similarly, deciding not to care about their feelings cuz you feel like they don’t care about yours? emotional neglect. It’s your job as the adult to take care of them, not the other way around. So yeah, for this movie, Anna was bratty, but I can’t really blame her most of the time bc she’s going through a lot grieving her dad and trying to figure out all the normal teen issues/w mean kids at school, and teachers on power trips, and who she’s trying to be, etc. All while her feelings and emotional needs are largely being ignored if not outright dismissed at home. I mean, it seems like a massive shift from how things were before her dad passed, so I don’t think Tess is the worst mom, but she let her own grief and later desire to be happy again block out everything her daughter was going through, and that’s not okay. Throughout the movie, Tess acted like the things Anna cared about were pointless, only took an interest in Anna’s life when she disapproved of Anna’s behavior, always assumed for no reason that Anna was the problem whenever something was going wrong for Anna w/o looking into it at all (she assumed Anna was lying/being dramatic about the teacher and Stacy picking on her even tho Anna seems to be a good student outside of that one class and doesn’t seem to have issues/w any other students), punished her in ways that have nothing to do/w the things she did wrong (won’t let her have privacy not bc she’s abusing it by keeping really important secrets or bc she isn’t respecting *other* ppls’ privacy but literally just bc she’s doing poorly in school - both in grades and behavior -which again, isn’t her fault) while failing to reward her for anything she does right, and refused outright to compromise her own happiness even a little for the sake of her daughter’s right up until the end (like, it would’ve been a bit ridiculous to ask to duck out of the *actual* wedding for that audition, or even to miss the whole rehearsal dinner, but Anna literally asked to step out of the *rehearsal* dinner for like half an hour to do something extremely important to her and her mom said no bc she thought Anna’s music was stupid and meaningless. That’s just straight up mean). I think this movie does a good job of showing how kids and parents can be super crappy to each other w/o meaning to be, and how in the end, it’s up to the parents to make things right. In the end, Tess realized that Anna’s problems were very real, and found respect for her interests. And once Anna saw that her mom wasn’t belittling her, and actually cared about how she felt, That respect came back for her as well. I think that’s really important to show. Kids aren’t mindless servants. Like all ppl, they mostly do as they’re taught, and to teach respect, you have to lead by example. Remember, hurt ppl hurt ppl. But, you Respect kids and they’ll probably respect you.

Not to mention Tess doesn’t really discipline her son, she allows him to disrespect his sisters privacy, and always believes he’s the golden child. I wish that she’d see what a brat he is and stop treating him like a prince and if he kept acting up he would be sent to boarding school

Even though I don't play disrespect but I don't believe in taking off the door. Everyone needs their privacy from a certain age. It's only because I believe in being healthy with one's own body 🤷🏾.

Another movie that has the creepy dynamic between the adult and their love interest who is trapped in a teenager's body is "17 Again" (2009). Might be worth a look.

Privacy should be a right to a certain degree with a parent and their child. Changing clothes, kissing a partner, feeling relaxed in general cannot be done when you fricken tear your child's door off their room. Trust gets lost when you can't trust your parent to not look over your shoulder.

Ok shoutout to you for referencing Taina. I feel like no one ever remembers that show but Christina Vidal said in an interview that people remember her the most from Taina, Brink & this movie (although she’s been in plenty). She said they practiced together for a couple months and learned the guitar and how excited she was to get to actually perform on the house of blues stage.. Side note - I always crack up at the line where Lindsay says “you’re the culprit “.. 😂 Also.. the love interest is the same love interest guy from a Cinderella story. Just watched your reaction from that

Julie Gonzalo, who plays Stacey was the popular girl in A Cinderella Story and the cheerleader in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. My mother would've never taken my door, mostly because she wouldn't know how, but she didn't have to. I could lock my door all I wanted but if she had something to say I would unlock that door so fast...😂

My bedroom door as a kid didn't lock so I would put a small wooden chair outside of it and pull it with my finger as i closed my door. Looking back, someone could have easily silently moved that chair and not wake me up. But it sure made my 8 year old self feel safe 😂 I would have cried if my parents took my door away. I wouldn't have been able to handle it with the creepy attic doors right outside my room and my sister telling me that Jeepers Creepers was her friend and lived in there lmaooo

Yeah about the door, I’m not allowed to close mine AT ALL, and I’m constantly told “I have no privacy in this house” and it’s very upsetting, because my parents do not trust me what so ever, and I’m actually a really good kid, and I don’t understand why my parents don’t trust me and have never given me the chance to show them they can.

personally, i believe that taking your child’s door is definitely an invasion of privacy which can count as abuse UNLESS you did it for a good reason. for example, let’s say the child is hurting themselves and is a risk towards themselves and a psychologist agreed that taking their door would be best to keep them safe, that’s fine! but if they just acted out once or did one bad thing that is no reason to take away their door.

Her door being taken was a bit over the top. If I was to take away a bedroom door from one of my children or niece or nephew, it would be if they had a girl or boy over and I told them to keep the door open while they are over but if they keep the door closed no matter the few times I ask, that is when I would take the bedroom door away. And this movie is hilarious, one of my favorites to watch growing up. Thanks for uploading.

Taking away a door, especially for a teenager that age is completely unreasonable. She's a year or two from being on her own. No way. The only reason I'd consider taking a door from a kid would be if they had developmental issues and the door was a safety issue.
