I forgot to mention… Peeta ended up with a prosthetic leg out of the first game. They couldn’t save it. So. At the end of the game when the finale was forced. Peeta almost didn’t make it on top of the cornucopia… also… when Cato was being thrashed by the Capitals mutts… Katniss is left with one arrow. And she had to use it to secure the tourniquet on Peetas leg… if she removes it to put Cato out of his misery, Peeta could bleed to death.. but they gnawed on him all night.. Peeta and Katniss thought it would be fast. But it was a slow death because of all that body armor he had on. At last she took the arrow from Peetas leg and used it on Cato

The books were much darker, one example those bear dog things, In the book it goes into detail that they looked in the faces like the fallen contestants, so they used their bodies to make those creatures, and their snouts were modified to bite in the most painful way, BUT in a way where they would kill u and rip you up SLOWLY so u died slower and suffered more.

Haymitch’s story is so sad but at this point the most relevant element is to consider that he has been forced to mentor two kids every year for a long time, and he is the mentor because he is the only District 12 Victor around. He was made to kill a lot of people to survive the arena. After that experience, he was forced to get to know a lot of innocent kids before watching them all get murdered.

If you want something truly Unsettling to consider, look at the training academies because this is a fun fact it doesn't get addressed in a movies after this point the way it probably will be addressed and similar in the song birds and snakes film. Every year district 2,200s of students of 18th amendments and get only 2 students in this district ever possibly be sent to the hunger games. Which bakes the question what happens to all the other kids who don't make the cut who just received essentially half a lifetimes worth of weapons, Tactical Strategic planning, survivalistics, Close quarter combat, And lethal forms of take down holds. Then keep in mind but in district 22 the capital is Beloved by 99% of the population of districts, Many of them they're ultimate goal isn't just winning the hunger games it's getting to be a citizen of the capital even if it's just honorary. They have loyalty to the capital way before they would ever have loyalty to their own districts let alone the lesser districts which they would consider beneath them and uncivilized and not willing to make the sacrifice the capital asks them to make... A sacrifice that heal the capital is morally correct in asking for. You can see this in the way that victors from districts 1 and 2 talk about how much being loved the people of the capital and how much they went to win so they'll still be able to be around them, So they are not even talking about making their own districts proud anymore they're talking about making the capital proud. And again and catching fire we see that the only districts that fight against the revolution katniss and district 13 are the citizens in district 1 and 2. See you have to ask what happens to all these kids with this ridiculous training this dangerous military stick lifestyle and belief at the capital is right and everything they do no matter how barbaric or horrific And just a morally reprehensible? You can't let that type of train expertise go to waste... And that's where the peacekeepers come in. Whoever has I should say that's where the peacekeepers come from. A large portion of peacekeepers essentially the entire young aside from high ranking officers because no matter how much the capital Prefers to use 1 & As the source of their military industrial complex, theyre still not going to be allowing any district to have real leadership over any type of military force. If this means it all those instances that we sleep peacekeepers it's packing the district on the board of the vocabulary not only are they blaming the capital that you're talking about some of the most effective trained killers in the entire franchise and And every year the capital gets several hundred of them in a graduation ceremony And they only have to worry about losing 4 of them potentially to The games. This is the real reason the capital allows the training academy to exist because technically attempted train for the games in any way is illegal. No that's not for ethical reason to what so ever that's slowly for 2 reasons 1 it can remove the integrity and the fairness for the gambling industry that exists around the games. The whole point was always to take the most innocent and vulnerable of the district populations so if they were able to train beforehand that would mean they're not really this innocent potential sacrifice. For the most predator ever the only real thieving the academy is Arkansas to be a legal is it Partially due to that it would affect the integrity In the odd system that is used for the gambling industry that is a major purpose of the gamesFor. Will the games are initially created to be a way to consistently put the districts down to discouraging of the religion over the years we have also become 1 of the most if not THE most important factors for Panels economy. Doing anything that 2 out with me affects the odds in a way that can be considered unfair by the people betting on it could easily cause major financial upheaval. The other reason there are legal in more important 1 is because the capital doesn't want any of the districts to have it any Functional knowledge of modern Warfare or weaponry. The primary reason district 13 was able to stage the uprising and alternately gained their freedom at the end of the 1st war is because of the fact that district 13 was the military industrial complex of Panem. The majority of their people already had access to and the knowledge for how to use those weapons. This is why you'll never see guns or explosive ordinance inside of the hunger games outside of minds used to control players and much the same way force field or mutts are They can be in there too much mayhem but they're not in there the same way a sword or bow and arrows is. This also makes it more difficult for district to stage rebellion because firearms simply do not exist where they are. Anuel districts 1 and 2 du consistently in the most if you look at the history other districts at 10 to win a lot or not a coincidence You have district 4 winning a lot you also have District 7 winning a great deal, These are the districts that deal with fishing, In harvesting and hauling lumber. In other words districts where human nature of their job the citizens including children betrayed from a young age to use things like specialized denives, netting, harpoons, tridance, Or especially johanna mason's Or especially johanna mason's case majority of the Or especially johanna mason's case, District 7 is the sort of place where small children would like me be more adjective at swinging or throwing an act with great accuracy before they're even able to tie their shoes.

I loved when you kept saying it’s not fair…. It isn’t, obviously… but what forced murder game is fair, even without their crazy forest fire, mutant animal, etc interference? It’s not meant to be fair. It’s meant to remind the districts that the capitol has no qualms about torturing and murdering people to maintain control and their subjugation. Tyrants are gonna tyrant, no matter what century, culture, country, etc. It’s all the same. And it’s evil. I hope you finish the series and I will say, I cry at least once in every movie and I have seen the movies many times and read the books when they were released. The books actually are great as well. I love that you were so open about the horror of the situation. The subsequent movies will fill in some background in subtle conversations and imagery. I look forward to more from you. If you haven’t already seen them, a nice contrast to the seriousness of these films is the Pitch Perfect trilogy. The first is the best (IMO) but the sequels are hilarious and definitely worth the watch and the music in all 3 is absolute fire!

@@TReacts. I found myself constantly thinking/saying “this is just absolutely evil. Not fair! Who is ok with this? How has this been happening for 74 freaking years?!?” The horror is real and it’s reminiscent of the Roman gladiatorial games and other types of blood sports from history. It’s obscene and we humans need to do better and not forget the past.

I'm so glad you understood the flashbacks! A lot of reactors think that Peeta was disrespecting or demeaning Katnis by throwing it to her instead of bringing it to her. In the book it makes it clearer that he was being watched by his mother and throwing it was all he could do. He still knew he would get beat for it and did it anyway. Katniss ties this moment back to her and her families' survival, because they were starving after her father died and this bread gave her the energy and time she needed to figure out what to do.

People also seem to forget Peeta was like eleven when this happened, so angering an abusing parent at that age is a big deal. I understand that movie-goers don't get that though since they look the same age. They really should have had child actors do that scene but I assume they felt people would be less likely to understand what is going on.
@12368Girl
@12368Girl 10 месяцев назад
I think the makers of the movies portrayed it pretty badly (or else it's hard to do, I really don't know!), but at the point where Peter throws the bread to Katniss, she and her sister were close to starvation. So she must have been relatively thin by then and the actress is anything but near starvation (not a negative statement, she's beautiful!)

Rue’s death is a major tipping point as Katniss’ actions in laying her to rest are respectful and normal to any human being watching the movie, but in the world of the film it is a political act (not deliberate on Katniss’ part) because it HUMANISES the child. Normally the dead kid is carried away by a drone. But to see her there, with flowers and love - a funeral - it wakes people up. It tells them that yes, the pain in their heart and the thought that this death is WRONG is the right thing to be feeling. And so, riots. Normally they don’t. Everyone is numb to these losses at this point. Rue and Katniss change that. The Capitol uses the children of its citizens to control the population. It’s twisted by design. You want to rebel? Look what happens to 24 of your children every year. Well, what if we did it to all of them? They manipulate hope and condition the people to live in fear from a young age.
@TReacts.
@TReacts. 10 месяцев назад
They really do run in fear! But it's totally understandable! The capitol is a scary gang! I'm thinking these films will get political which would be a really fascinating approach! Thank you so much for all your comments i've loved hearing what you have to say! Thanks so much :)
@Leffelini
@Leffelini 10 месяцев назад
I wouldn't say they are numb to it, but they are scared as you say. It comes to a point when they are less scared and cowed than they are angry (even if its not Rue's district that is the first to start riots in the books) and hurt. In the books its described as a chore they have to do, to watch the games, and even if you distance yourself to it it doesn't feel like people are numb (I read numb as not caring here, if you meant something else we might totally agree :D ). They have endured this for three-ish generations - that pent up anger is being unleashed.
@ruetube
@ruetube 10 месяцев назад
so real also, back in the early games, the parents of tributes used to put their kids in their "sunday best" for the games. these were often hand-embroidered with flowers, animals etc.. there's a theory that the capitol switched to tribute uniforms to further dehumanise them, so they wouldn't be seen as innocent children in the eyes of the capitol

Getting a score of 11 was a mixed blessing. It helps her with sponsors but it also put a big target on her back with the other tributes. The careers went after her because they recognized her as a threat. A note about Haymitch: He won the 50th Hunger Games and has had to mentor more than 20 pairs of tributes since then. Every year, he has to do this. Every year, they died. There’s more tragedy to his story. It’s no wonder he is a cynical alcoholic.

The dogs in the book are even scarier because Katniss realizes that they look to human, with human features that she finds familiar. So they were either made with the DNA of the fallen tributes, or they were literally made from their corpses (which is highly likely given the fact that once you enter the Hunger Games, they basically own you, and so when you die, they can do whatever they want with your body).

When I watch reactions, a lot of people hate Cato and the other more sadistic Tributes and root for their deaths, and that always makes me really appreciate what Susanne Collins did when she wrote these books. At the start, everyone watching the movie is talking about how crazy/sick it is that children are being selected for a fight to the death, how disturbing it is that everyone watches the broadcast at all times, placing bets and being invested etc. By the time Glimmer is dead, a lot of reactors say that they do not feel bad for her. Because she's a bad person, and hellbent on killing, and she's a murderer, right? But she's a kid - one of the kids in the richer Districts that is raised from birth to expect death, to train to kill, to entertain the masses with murdering other children. Their parents enrol them in that training before the children have a chance to start thinking rationally. Glimmer, Cato, that little group is 100% a product of the world the Capitol has built, where this is normal. If you were raised that way, I honestly believe there are two options - you either wouldn't have survived to this point (truly wouldn't a child go insane), or you lean into the madness to survive. That's life for the kids in the higher Districts. In the lower Districts, there is no money, no training to fight and barely an education, no nutritious food, no medicine - every day is a struggle. The children are desperate, raised for slaughter at the hands of the richer kids in the Games (99% of the time, that's the outcome). I think the book and the movie replicate the experience really well - when someone starts to root for who should live, and who should die. You stop paying attention to the fact that none of these kids should be in this situation at all. Panem.
@TReacts.
@TReacts. 10 месяцев назад
FACTS! I see that, if u take a moment to think deeply about why they are like that then yes! they really know no different, that's crazyyyy! This cycle needs to stop i hope we see some sort of change in the coming films because i cannot bare to watch more of this!! Need to stop these games!!!
@Leffelini
@Leffelini 10 месяцев назад
That's also why I love the impact that Cato has in the end. He was always dead, he just didn't know it. As in he figured out that he was always raised to die, not to live a life of honor, like he had thought before. The Capitol he looked up to wasn't what he thought it was. But killing is the only thing he can do so he still try to do that. And of course its even more pronounced in the books.
@_dont_mind_me
@_dont_mind_me 10 месяцев назад
And that’s one of the principal themes of the second book, “remember who the real enemy is”. It’s not the other tributes, it’s the capitol that has put them all in this situation.

@c0rpsepuppy 10 месяцев назад
i always found cato’s “i’m dead anyway” line so heart wrenching. you can hate these children all you want, but none of them wanted to die, half of them believed if they lived they’d bring “honor” to their districts somehow, and the other half knew that winning meant a lifetime of the capitol up their ass, including possible forced prostitution because many of the past victors were forced into it. cato is a product of his environment, and i truly believed he knew if he survived, he wouldn’t be “happy” ever. he knew what was waiting for him if he lived, he knew the victor life was not sunshine and rainbows, it was a cesspool of vermin constantly watching you even in your private time. i feel like cato had accepted his place as a capitol “pet” if he was to be the victor. he was already desensitized to the idea of his life not being his own

i’ve always loved thresh in the book and in the movie. in the book the career districts (1&2) tried to recruit him for an alliance but he refused, and he refused to banter with caesar flickerman, only giving him yes or no answers. he stuck to himself the entirety of the games, only staying in a wheat field because thats what he knew and thats what his district does, agriculture. even during the feast when he goes to retrieve his backpack the only reason why he kills clove is because i thought what she was doing to katniss, tormenting her and cutting her slowly, was how rue went. the thought of a child, especially rue who was greatly loved in district 11, being tortured to death was the only thing to make him harm someone else. after he learns what katniss did for rue he not only spares her life, but takes cato’s bag so that he would go after him and not katniss. i truly think that he was a gentle giant (since in the book katniss describes him as 6’6 and built like an ox) forced to hurt people and thats why he stuck to himself so often. truly an amazing young man and his death brings me to tears every time. so does rue, she was the same age and height as prim which is why katniss felt like she couldn’t leave her to be alone in the arena. she also resembles a bird in the books, according to katniss, another similarity between the too because katniss would always call prim “little duck” because of her clothes tendency to form a duck tail in the back. rues mockingjay song is the song she would sing in her district to let everyone know they could go home since she was usually high up in the trees and could see the flags signifying quitting time before anyone else. her dialogue in the book is heartbreaking too because it really hits home that shes only a child. she said the mockingjays were her special friends, that shes fast, “if they cant catch me they cant kill me so don’t count me out” literally crying its HORRIFIC

But she also have her sleeping-bag which keeps heat in and cold out. And when she loose it and she have to sleep without it she thinks back to that fire and understands that someone would lite a fire considering how cold it is without it. It's a nice moment of her realizing she has way more training than the other kids and one of the few moments she allow herself to feel empathy them. If you wonder why you don't learn most of the tributes names in the movie, its not only because they are "background characters and who cares", but its because Katniss doesn't want to learn their name because that would make it harder for her to kill them. So her being "sassy" against the other is a coping-mechanism for her.

Every reactor wants Katniss to grab all the bags. If she did that, every living tribute would have chased her. They all need what’s in those bags to survive, so she would have forced their hand by taking their bags. Thresh took two bags (11 and 2) after killing Clove because he wanted Cato to come looking for him, a bold move to change the game and win sponsors. Clove was trying to get sponsors too, appealing to more bloodthirsty viewers by drawing out the death of the highest scoring tribute. Katniss couldn’t stay in that cave because she would have lost the support of the sponsors invested in the love story. Many tributes die trying to please sponsors, some winning by doing terrible things for them, only to learn what happens to popular victors (not really a spoiler, but not mentioned yet): They essentially become Capitol escorts, those sponsors wanting special treatment for their investment. If a victor refuses? Their loved ones are killed. Once you’re reaped, you die in that arena or you spend the rest of your days doing awful things to survive.

The number of times a kids name is entered for the reaping increases as they get older (once at 12, twice at 13, and so on). They also are able (or kind of have to) enter their name more times for government provided food supplies. That’s why Gales name was in so many times (food for his siblings and his age).

I don't know if you'll see this, but there is only one thing that has always bugged me about this movie. In the book, when Clove dies (the girl from District 2 who was killed by Thresh) she yells for Cato and Katniss can hear him calling back but he sounds too far away to actually be able to help her. There's then beats her head with a rock, and she doesn't die instantly like in the movie. Cato finds her on the ground after she gets hit and she's dying. He holds her and tells her that's she's okay, basically begging her to stay alive. I always thought that that scene shows how human even the kids from District 1&2 are. They're all just kids forced to live in that awful world. Like how Clove was going to kill Katniss the way she was planning in order to give the capital a good show and get more sponsors.

just in time for the ballad of songbirds and snakesss also i wanna say, rue was known by everyone one in district 11. during the harvest she is always high in the trees and is the first one to see the flag that signals the end of the work day. so then she sings her little song and the mockingjays spread her song throughout the orchard, letting everyone know they can go home and not to overwork. i can only imagine how devastating it must have been that the sweet little girl everyone knows got reaped. and since rue so fond of mockingjays, seeing katniss wear a mockingjay pin made her decide she can trust her and i get so sad when i think about how after rue gets reaped, she would be forced to watch the reapings of the other districts. and then she would see a girl who looks about her age, prim. except unlike rue, prim has someone who protects her. someone who can save her from this nightmare ☹️☹️☹️

It’s important to remember to think of his limits with a newly amputated leg in the following movies! They had to keep the impacts of the injury in for storylines purposes but because they cut the cause - many movie watchers thought he was clumsy or weak or that people were concerned about him for no real reason!
@clover2739
@clover2739 10 месяцев назад
To be fair, peeta didn’t lose his leg from that cut. He didn’t get a healing salve, he was moreso dying from blood poisoning so he got an injection that helped. He lost his leg because after that when the dog mutts came and he was trying to climb the cornucopia, one of them jumped up and bit his leg so he was bleeding badly most of the time during the Cato fight. I think it was Katniss right tourniquet that was on for hours because Cato took all night to die was what made peeta have to have his leg amputated

I don't understand why the movie made the mockingjay pin a secret. In the book it was her token. All the tributes are allowed to bring a token into the games. It's something from home. The tokens are examined by the capitol to make sure they can't influence the results of the game. I think if I'm remembering correctly one of the tributes had their token confiscated because it had a secret needle that could inject poison. Anywho, the point I'm trying to make is the mockingjay pin was not a secret.

i think something that not many people realize about the districts is that even though the “richer” districts are better off than the outlying districts are, they are still VERY poor. they are still struggling. they are nowhere near as rich as the capitol and a lot of people act like they are and it really bothers me because those aren’t some snobby rich kids, they are kids who struggle to survive but just have a better chance of it than the outer districts
@fobbish
@fobbish 10 месяцев назад
also not everyone in the capitol is uber rich, they all act like they are but there are many people who are dirt poor. snow was when he grew up (which makes the fact that he STILL puts ppl in the districts in the same situation that he was in even worse) and the people in the capitol are just so heavily propagandized that they think they need to act like they are super wealthy. it all serves to drive a wedge between the people of the capitol and the people in the districts even more than there already is (so that it will be harder to rebel)

This is no spoiler, because sadly it is never said in the movies.......One major thing about the first movie, what bothers me, is the Mockingjay Pin. They changed it for the movie and in doing this, they changed the ENTIRE meaning of the symbol and its backstory. Katniss does NOT "find" it at the black market. Nor does Cinner have to give it to her in secret.(because the plot of the first book is about Katniss wearing it openly) In the books, After the reaping, a girl called Magde Undersees (Katniss´s only friend in Distrikt 12) gives her the pin. Its a family token and belonged to her aunt Maysilee Donner. Maysilee was reaped at age 16, to fight in the games. She wore the Pin as a lucky charm. (Because every tribute is allowed to have one token from home. The pin passed all the tests. But a "family ring" of the Distrikt 2 girl fails, because the gamemakers find out about its poisened content and therefor beeing a weapon.) Sadly Maysilee died in the games and the pin was given to her sister, Madges mom. Who since then is living a life of pain and depression. Its also revealed (in the second book) that Katniss´s mom and Maysilee been best friends.

She didn't go to Rue right away because she couldn't, her ear injury was too much so she slept concealed by bushes and found her the next day. Okay, I haven't seen anyone else. Comment this. But I wanted to clarify one thing. Thresh wasn't killed by the dogs. He was actually killed by Cato in revenge for killing Clove and taking the district too bad from the feast. And that is why Csto was so bloodied, because he just came out of a very difficult fight with Thresh fighting the dogs and then finally facing katniss. Also little extra tidbit, the scene where they are about to eat the berries because they won't kill each other, It's slightly different in the books. They actually manage to get the berries in their mouth and then have to spit them out before they actually swallow them.

I think Effie was raised to watch a show and that's where she got a job from. Effie wanted to keep her job because she needed it. She saw an opportunity to share fashion and glamour with people who were less priviledged even tho for a short time. Effie also didn't have another way to bring cheer to a su!c!de mission so she decided to be the cheer. Lightening the mood in what way she could - without openly judging the Hunger Games. I don't think she knew they were poisonous; I believe she was studying the plants and berries, because she needed to brush up on her knowledge. Sadly, she ate the berries because she saw Peeta gathering them to eat, and assumed they were safe. Peeta also explains to Katniss that he assumed they were the same berries they'd eaten before in the arena (as they look similar), so he didn't know either, but thankfully he didn't eat any before Katniss got to him.

First off, I love and covet your hair. Second, LOVED this reaction! You were insightful and observant, which was awesome to watch :D Third, as far as book adaptations go, The Hunger Games movies are pretty faithful! But a couple things were changed/omitted details I feel worth mentioning, so I shall: - The time span. The movies obviously had to cut out a lot, so it may seem not that much time was spent in the Games, but in the books, they lasted weeks upon weeks upon weeks. Katniss' friendship with Rue lasted a couple weeks minimum, and they not only bonded, but learned more about each other's Districts. Communication is very restricted between Districts, and Katniss is surprised to hear that Rue, coming from the agriculture District, doesn't get to eat any of the food they cultivate. - District 11 had pooled together their money to buy Rue a loaf of bread, but when she died, rather than pulling the sponsor gift, they had it sent to Katniss instead. This was the first time ever that a District gave a gift to a tribute from another District. Katniss recognizes the bread as District 11's (bc Peeta showed her earlier) and that's when she gives the 3-fingered salute. (Btw, this salute is said to be a symbol of honor, of respect, of saying goodbye to someone you love.) - Gale's comment at the start that "If no one watches, they don't have a game" is different from the books, cause in there, the districts are FORCED to watch. Students get days off from school for the big events, people gather in the squares surrounded by Peacekeepers, etc. It's not as simple as "stop watching" because it's a systemic injustice, not one the populace can simply refuse to take part in. - The parachutes. I have two gripes with the parachutes, one of which is a minor nitpick and the other irks me (though I get it bc movie). Nitpick: WHY DO THEY BEEP??? I'm sorry, if they BEEPED like that in the Games, YOUR OPPONENTS WOULD HEAR IT AND KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. WHAT THE HECK! WHY DID THEY ADD THIS?? XD Actual gripe: in the books, Mentors were NOT allowed to put notes in the sponsor gifts. I mean... duh. They have outside info. They're not allowed to give hints! In the books, it's extra special because Katniss has to put together what hidden messages Haymitch is sending her, such as connecting the broth to the kiss and knowing she has to amp up the romance. - On the roof, when Peeta contemplates wanting to still be himself when he dies, Katniss says, "I just can't afford to think like that." HOWEVER, in the books, when he asks if that makes sense, she says no, and thinks to herself "how could you possibly die as anyone else?" It takes her a while to understand him, highlighting a key difference in their characters. - The mutts. I'm not a fan of how the movies made the Capitol able to just. Summon them into being. But regardless, in the books, Katniss notes that the mutts look like each of the fallen tributes, with collars depicting their district number. She even wonders in horror if they used the dead bodies' real eyes and put them in the mutts. She stares into Rue's. - This is a BIG one!! When they announce 2 victors can win, in the movies Katniss says "Peeta..." softly. In the books, she screams "PEETA!!" and slaps her hand over her mouth, berating herself for the stupidity of yelling. Later, when watching back the highlight reel on Ceasar's show, that moment is used to answer Ceasar's question of when Katniss realized her feelings for him. The books make it clear that it was an act first and foremost, but at times Katniss wasn't sure whether she was entirely acting. - The bread. This memory is interspersed but a lot of people who haven't read the books don't grasp what happened. Katniss and her family were starving to death, she'd yet to learn to hunt, and she collapsed outside Peeta's house. Seeing her after getting beat by his mother for burning bread he then gave to the pigs, he goes back inside and intentionally burns more bread, taking a beating so he can toss Katniss the bread. That saved her family. That bread kept her alive long enough to see their next meal. - In the books, Katniss goes deaf/permanent hearing loss in one ear after exploding the supplies, and Peeta is left with an amputated leg, replaced by a prosthetic. Not sure why they removed this, as it's pretty important, but I digress. - One kiss, Katniss feels different. "This is the first kiss that leaves me wanting more." She muses that "I thought I knew everything there is to know about hunger. But this is an entirely new kind." - Drugging Peeta. In the books, Peeta REFUSES to let Katniss go get his medicine by vowing to drag himself after her yelling and screaming, so he'll be killed if she tries. Not knowing what to do, Katniss is surprised by a parachute with a sickly sweet substance. Then it clicks: this is a sleeping drug. She spoon-feeds it to Peeta, who comments it's familiar, but it isn't until he begins to drift off that his eyes widen in realization of what she's just done. - At the end when the 2 victors rule is revoked, Katniss immediately pulled the bow on him, only to see him with hands up. Not a huge change in the movies, but yeah. She was prepared to kill him. There's a ton more but I'll stop myself XD Can't wait to see you react to the next one!!! These books were so pivotal for tween me, and adult me is astounded by how deep and dark and gritty they were. Anygay, see ya soon!

I just noticed how helpful the scene with Seneca and Snow is in establishing their dynamic. Snow doesn't directly control Seneca's moves, but makes it clear he disapproves of Katniss's score while Seneca is more light-hearted and dismissive thinking it's not a big deal. Then later on when Seneca is locked in the room with the berries, the audience is able to pick up that Seneca screwed up in Snow's eyes by letting them live and that this is the consequence using that context. I know that's probably a "well, duh" observation but I didn't really think about the deliberate choices they made for the viewers who hadn't read the books and therefore needed the movies to establish character relationships

In the books during the Feast scene when Clove dies (girl with knives) Cato runs to her and begs her to stay with him. So mad they didnt include that in the film because it humanized the Careers. In the movie they just had Cato make a speech at the end which left less of an impact.

Haymitch won the 50th Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta are competing in the 74th Hunger Games and no one has won from District 12 since Haymitch, so he’s feeling pretty hopeless and depressed when we meet him. No surprise he turned to alcohol to cope in the meantime. Haymitch has been forced to watch kids he’s mentoring be killed again and again for 24 years, so I imagine he’s trying not to get too attached to Katniss and Peeta. However, it’s suggested Katniss was the first Tribute from his District he thought he could genuinely help and get back home. Also, every 25 years the Capitol holds something called a ‘Quarter Quell’ which adds an extra stipulation to the Games. In the 25th Hunger Games the Districts were forced to vote for who would compete in the Games rather than it being chosen in a lottery, “as a reminder to the rebels that their children were dying because of their choice to initiate violence” and in the 50th Games there were double the amount of Tributes, 2 boys and 2 girls from every District, “as a reminder that two rebels died for each Capitol citizen” which was the Games Haymitch competed in and won. So his Games were particularly brutal, so yeah, he’s not doing great. It’s also really rare for people in the poorer Districts to volunteer, so Katniss really stood out at the time. She was just trying to save her sister and had no idea she’d win. It’s suggested in the books Snow gave Katniss a high score of ‘11’, not because of her skill in the evaluation but as a way to punish her. By giving her such a high score Snow put a target on her back, which made the Careers band up and try to take her out as soon as possible. Katniss would also never hurt Rue, she’s a kid, and as an older sister everything in her is screaming to protect Rue. In the books, Katniss really grows to like Rue and thinks if she tries hard enough maybe Rue could win. But when Rue dies we see how devastating it is. How unfair. It could have easily been Prim laying there dead if Katniss didn’t volunteer, so Katniss loses it. Just cries and cries, and lays flowers down for her, attempting to give her some type of funeral before the hover craft takes Rue away. When the Capitol Citizens see it, they’re upset, and when District 11 see it, Rue’s home, they’re angry and begin to revolt. It’s suggested the man who starts the riot in District 11 is Rue’s father too.

The hunger games is my Roman Empire, I swear I think about it every day. I think although it’s ultimately a fictional story it actually relates to so many aspects of our worlds history and even current affairs. There are so many lessons to be learned and so much inspiration to be taken from some characters. I have read all the books (except TBOSAS, going to wait for movie to come out first 🥳) and I have watched the movies an unhealthy amount of times. The thing I love about them is every time you watch you realise so many different small details you never had before. A character I loved in the first movie was fox face. I think she was so far ahead of the other tributes. I believe she made a conscious decision to eat the night lock to un-alive herself as she most likely realised she couldn’t bare life after winning with the guilt etc. So excited for the new movie to come out!

Peeta is just as impressive as Katniss just in a different way. I love his artistic talents, and his loyalty. Katniss for her bravery, and her honesty. Her sarcasm is on point as well. I love when Hammich tells Katniss about Peeta and him saying she was his crush..."HE made you look desirable!!!" Ru dying just gutted me, she was so young! People have already talked about Haymitch, but people don't talk enough about Cato and how he had his realization at the end, which was much more obvious in the book of course, that yeah, having been trained to kill his whole life and having to kill people as a child made him realize that he wasn't actually getting any "glory", and that he had been fed a lie his whole life. He's sort of the stand-in for the patriot who becomes a soldier and realizes that war is not that fantastic once in it. As you'll see when you progress further into this series, this is all about PTSD and modern warfare being a televised event, and the fact that most soldiers are teens when they enlist, and the damage done to child soldiers in the world, etc. It also kind of riffs off the same stuff as the novella The Running Man by Stephen King, that we're pretty close to this already with a reality TV, and how awful it is that we're so close already, because of late stage capitalism falling apart and causing people to be poor enough to sell themselves to a game show for food or medicine. They get more into the PTSD part in subsequent films in the series, and the last couple chapters of the final book are among the best literature I've ever read in my life when it comes to that subject. So much so that therapists often counsel families of soldiers to read these books so they can understand what their family members are going through when they try to come back home.

New to your channel; always glad to see someone new reacting to THG. You probably know all this from your Patrons.... The ratings in which Katniss got an 11 were from 1-12, not 1-10. In the book there's more of an explanation of how the kids can get more food rations for their family by entering more times in the Reaping. One entry is required for each person in the family. There are five in Gale's family, so he is entered 6 more times each year (entries are cumulative). So he was entered 6 times at 12, 12 at 13, 18 at 14, 24 at 15, 30 at 16, 36 at 17, and 42 times at 18. In the books those bear-dog-things had the hair and eye color of the tributes who had died up to that point. It was unclear if they might actually *be* the previous tributes. There are 12 districts. The colorful people are from the Capital. They won the civil war and instituted the Hunger Games. There is a 13th district that was destroyed in the war. Katniss is from District 12, which is physically located in the American Appalachian area around West Virginia. People there are miners. You should read the books after you watch the movies. Then definitely go see "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" when it comes out in a couple of weeks, or find it streaming somewhere and do a reaction. You are correct that it is a prequel. It gives the backstory for President Snow and happens around the time of the 10th Hunger Games.

I really enjoyed watching your reaction! I read the books before seeing the movie, including the new prequel movie, so it is so interesting to see it through fresh eyes. I have a lot of thoughts, sorry if this is long. There were moments I laughed, like when you said at the beginning you thought they fought for a prize, and other moments, like when you showed such genuine relief that Katniss found Rue in the net, that I was thinking "oh honey I'm so sorry you don't know whats coming," (but also not sorry, because the feels really make the experience). I was impressed by the details and unspoken impressions you picked up on, and you pointed things out that I've never noticed! I can't believe after all this time I never noticed that Peeta points to Cato's hand. I guess I was always looking at Cato's face. This comment section is great, I appreciate the way everyone is so kindly sharing the details that will add to your experience of the story without apoiling too much. I'm looking forward to pressing play on your reaction video to the sequel haha and I am so grateful for this resurgence for these amazing deeply layered stories, so I can notice more details and notice how different it feels to experience the story now as an adult instead of a teen. Turns out, even more upsetting. Feels even worse that they're kids than when I was also a kid.

While I enjoy the movies I prefer the books & I highly recommend people read them especially if they enjoy the films as there's a lot more detailes about the world & characters that was left out, 'watered down' or changed entirely in the movies VS the books. I can understand that this is partly due to time/cost/technology constraints but I think it was also because the director didn't want to miss out on sales by making the movies R-rated so focus more on the obvious action instead of showing the full extent of the characters truma (which I get is hard to show in films when a lot of it is internal but still). This means backstories for important characters never get shown, some really interesting characters never even get introduced & some scenes don't convey the true horror that they're supposed to (eg. the dogs near the end of this movie look like they share the dead tributes DNA, in the book, & Katniss + Peeta have to listen to Cato being mauled alive the whole night before she's able to finally mercy kill him). The other reason is because of how they portray Peeta (especially in the 1st movie). No hate to Josh Hutchinson (even if he, along with J-Law, wasn't really the correct age for the role) but book Peeta comes across much more useful/competent then he dose in the movies. I think it's due to a mix of him being much kinder & emotionally intelligent than a lot of other male love intrests at the time the movies were coming out & Katniss not being as "traditionally girly" as some young female leads so I think the people in charge of the movies unfortunately viwed Peeta as the "weaker" part of the duo + kind of overdid Katniss's "GirlBoss" vibes to the point that she barley seems intrested in Peeta in some scenes when she really isn't like that in the books (just kind of emotionally stunted/introverted & confused due to truma & being young). Thankfully this dose get better in the other movies but none of them do these characters complete justice, in my opinion, & definitely don't convey the true depths of the relationship the two share in the books. A few example of this is are - The flashback with the bread. In the book Peeta & Katniss are supposed to be eleven. It was shortly after her dad died & her mum was catatonic with grief so her & Prim where starving in secret after the "compensation" grain from the Capitol ran out because Katniss didn't want her & Prim to be put in the local children's home (the kids there were always covered in bruises). She wasn't old enough for her name to be put in the reaping bowl yet so there wasn't any way for her to get extra food from the Capitol (she tried selling Prim's old baby clothes but nobody wanted them), she was too scared to enter the woods without her dad (meaning she couldn't hunt) & she wasn't friends with Gale yet. This went on till one night she got so desperate, she tried looking for food in the bins outside the bakery but Peeta's mum stopped her & she ended up under a tree, just waiting to die, then she heard Peeta's mum yelling at him for burning some bread, telling him to feed it to the pigs as no one worth selling it to would buy it now. Peeta soon came out &, after waitinng to make sure it was safe, threw some bread to her. This managed to help her & her family keep going (the loves were thick with seads & nuts inside making them much more filling) until she finally got the courage to start entering the woods alone. When Katniss saw Peeta again at school he's eye was swollen from he's mum beating him & she wanted to thank him for helping her but never did because they're awkward/traumatised kids who run in different social circles (Katniss comes from the "lower" class Seam part of town whereas Peeta is from the slightly "higher" class Merchant part of town). During their 'who's more likely to win' debate Katniss suprises herself by blurting out how good he was at wrestling when they were at school (she hadn't realised until then how much she'd a been paying attention to him all these years) & when Peeta goes on he's rant about how he's own mother views Katniss as a survivor over him, she stops him by pointing out that she only managed because someone had helped her. In the book both Katniss & Peeta are openly nervous about their costumes being set alight & jokingly reassure eachother that that'll rip the others cape off for them & while, in the book, them holding hands is Cinna's idea Katniss has zero problem with it & actually thanks Peeta after they climb out, for keeping her steady. She even kisses his injured cheek, though it is in "revenge" for smiling at her in such a charming way that she again becomes convinced he's trying to manipulate her so he can kill her easier lol. While the movie shows Peeta falling & Katniss having to give him advice on how to salvage his image during the training in the Capital, book Peeta is shown to be quite skilled at hand to hand combat (especially for someone from such a poor district) to the point that he manages to impress the careers (which makes them letting him join their group once they're in the arena much more believeable). There's a flashback in the book where Katniss & Gale witnessed two people trying to escape to the woods only for one to be killed while the other is captured & turned into an Avox (Capitol slaves who have their tounges removed). Upon seeing the girl again, Katniss makes the mistake of expressing recognition (which makes the adults tense) but Peeta, clearly understanding how bad this could be for her, quickly comes up with a convincing enough lie (that Katniss just mistook her for a girl they knew back home who looked similar) to cover for her.

They were technically dog mutts fused with the dead tributes. Three were still alive and one had just died, so there were 20 mutts running after them in the end. He's probably the strongest physically. He'll kill to stay alive, but not out of sport. Although I really love Jennifer Lawrence's performance, I wish they had chosen someone who looked more like "Book Katniss". Book Katniss is small and very skinny because she didn't get enough to eat as a child. That's why she can climb much higher up the tree than everyone else. (she weighs less) While Jennifer Lawrence is even taller than Josh Hutcherson (Peeta). Katniss is only 16 years old in the first book. Many assume she is 18 because Jennifer Lawrence was 20-21 when they filmed it. By the way, in the book there is a kind of two-class society in District 12. The people from the "seam" all have olive skin, black hair and gray eyes. (Gale, Katniss, Katniss' father). The "merchants" have blond hair and blue eyes (Peeta, Katniss' mother , Prim - Prim has inherited her mother's looks, but they live in the seam).

hmm i disagree! I don't think ANYONE could have done what Jennifer did! Her performance is OUTSTANDING i believe no one could have done it justice like her, films and books are always going to be different so i think it's cool! Ooo thanks for that detail that's good to know :)

“What in the Graham Norton is this?” 😂 When I saw this, I was almost certain Tucci got at least some of the inspiration for his performance from Norton.

Some ppl really watched this movies and said the capitol and snow has the right to defend themselves(p.s: I’m not talking about the capitol) ✌🏽

The fact this occurs every year is disgusting, making children from the age of 12 to fight to the death... they have no right to defend themselves!!
