Pope Francis sat down with "60 Minutes" and allegedly contradicted scripture over and over. I watched the whole interview, and the headlines were simply misleading. Here's what he actually said.

@@henryslatt9041 I am a young student here in Canada. I can clearly remember my grade 8 year, spent at a Catholic elementary school. When June rolled around, the pride flag was hung along with the Canadian flag. I was utterly shocked and ashamed that my school would choose to do that, especially since it was not only Catholic but had kindergarteners learning there. That apparently wasn't enough however, since my teacher (who was obviously quite liberal) showed us pro-gay media, even going as far as to present to us a book in which people protesting against LQBTQ+-sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a on the basis that it was sinful were portrayed as the "bad guys". I can only hope that the younger children weren't taught anything of the sort, but I have a feeling that they were, although likely a watered-down version. The misunderstanding that people are fundamentally good is very recent historically and comes from a whole host of different secular philosophies. It is not a Catholic or Christian teaching in any sense. I usually agree with your hot takes on Pope Francis, but in this he was just plain wrong. @@Kingofkings07133the condition of fallen man is a condition at odds with his nature as created and loved by God. The sin nature is not so much an actual substantive nature as it is a quality of disrepair and corruption in a person. The nature of man as man is preserved to the extent that any evil may infect it. But in this Condition which is now natural to all born under Adam's lineage, there is no proper righteousness to speak of, which is only restored in faith, competing with the brokenness of the sin nature gradually via sanctification. I am not catholic, I am Lutheran. Catholic doctrine is sound on this matter, but us lutherans say that we are both just, and sinner, until we finally rest in christ our lord apart from the body.

"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." As the Pope said we're all sinners, but we all fundamentally are God's creation. At our core we were meant to be good. Original sin does taint that good, but everyone's trying to commit what they perceive as good. Largely what they think to be good is not good, but they are aiming towards a perceived good, but once again perception isn't always correct. In some perverse unfathomable way Hitler believed himself to be doing good. Our hearts are tainted by evil, but fundamentally(derived from the Latin "fundare" meaning "to found") we were created for good. Let's say someone grew up only knowing old dog training, and let's say they were training a dumbbell retrieve and they did the old German method of pinching the dog's ear until it grabbed the dumbbell. Obviously, we have discovered more effective and less cruel training methods, but as it is all what the person knows in their mind it is a sacrifice that is valid since it's for the greater good of the dog. It comes from a desire for good even though, through ignorance they are causing unnecessary pain. And on the contrary let's say someone is excessively force free because they believe it to be best for their dog, so they decide not to crate train the dog. Later on they have the dog in a car without a crate and they end up having to slam on the breaks 'cause a deer ran into the road. The dog goes flying and breaks its neck. Did the person will evil/suffering towards the dog? No! They were simply ignorant of what would truly be good for the dog, but how they treated the dog came from a place of love. Now, as Michael said about Noah(which is exactly what I thought of watching the interview) God literally killed most of the world besides Noah and his family because He viewed Noah as being less depraved than the rest which raises a question. If we are all TOTALLY depraved, how can one be less depraved than another? That's illogical. 100% depraved is as high you can go. But even beyond all that as Pope Francis said there's some rogues, so he acknowledged there are people that legitimately want to do evil because they believe it's evil, but that's an incredibly small portion of people. The basic question should be: Do you believe living a moral life brings true joy? Does cheating on your spouse lead to joy? If so, maybe we are totally depraved, but most people would actually feel guilt which is the natural law. It is of our nature to feel guilty when we commit acts of evil, and feel fulfilled when we do acts of good. In my mind that means it's entirely valid to believe that we are not totally depraved.

The Bible is confusing sometimes, therefore the bible is not of God? No, of course not. If the Bible doesn’t make sense, that’s because there is something wrong with me. @kileyblack2462
@kileyblack2462 3 месяца назад
@@dylanschweitzer18 I think there is miscommunication here about what the term "confusion" is really about. Regarding the Bible and clarity, people are often confused about the Bible because, either it refers to cultural and historical events that most people don't have access to, or because (as the Bible points out) there are still parts of God's plan that won't be revealed yet, so the clues left behind are still missing major pieces in order to put them together (i.e. Revelations). This is different from confusion caused by teachers who make contradictory claims to the Bible or doctrine. (I should mention, I'm not a Catholic, so I don't know anything about what the Pope has really said. I'm just clarifying terms here) Since the position of teacher or leader of the church is often unquestioned, especially considering the usual amount of care people put into placing well educated, capable believers in those positions, if a teacher makes contradictory claims to the faith, it can often cause distress among believers, and it can confuse new or untrained believers who might also be influenced by the world culture. I think @ovsg1938 is talking about the latter form of confusion, which isn't the same as confusion about the literary text of the Bible. I just wanted to help clarify terms here, so we can have a productive conversation.

That isn't what he said. That quote isn't even real. What is said "This is today’s problem, of many who call themselves ‘traditional'" "No, they are not traditional. They are indietristi [backwardist], people who look to the past, going backward, without roots. And looking ‘backward’ is a sin because it does not progress with the Church." That's not him saying traditional Catholics are under the sin of backwardism. That is him saying there are many who claim to be traditional, but are not. I don't know if you are simply knowingly lying and misquoting the Pope, but if you are, that's extremely disgusting and you should go to confession. "he spreads confusion as often as possible" As often as possible, you reckon? Is that another lie or just hyperbole? On the question of female deacons, he gave a flat out "No". Was that confusing to you? While he can be confusing some times, I'd argue that there are some Catholics who exaggerate it because they have a grotesque desire for him to be confusing because they don't like him. He isn't so heavy handed of those they don't like (like Fr. James Martin), but he disciplines people they do like (even when those people say terrible schismatic things). They just don't like him, so they don't want him to be clear. When he is crystal clear, they just ignore him too. I'm speaking of people like Taylor Marshall, Timothy Gordon, and others.

Michael here tries to blame Calvinism for people saying that mankind is fundamentally bad. It seems he does this in order to define it as a Protestant belief instead of a Catholic one. The thing is though the idea of total depravity long predates John Calvin. It’s actually St. Augustine who is famous for articulating this doctrine. Augustine debated Pelagius, on this topic. Pelagius said that man was “fundamentally good” and was condemned as a heretic for that belief by the Catholic Church. It’s a lot harder to excuse this statement by the pope when the Church already called the position heresy.
@chasedudek3136
@chasedudek3136 4 месяца назад
The Church condemned pelagianism because it essentially says one can attain salvation without grace. That's what Augustine was writing against, that is the gist of the error condemned by the Church. Augustine didn't believe in double predestination, if he had, and if his writings reflected that, I assure you he would not be a canonized saint. Calvin himself wasn't even the first to misconstrue Augustine's teachings here, the first was a Saxon monk named Gottschalk in the mid 9th century, who also believed himself to teach the "true" Augstinian doctrine on predestination. He was condemned as a heretic as well. It's always interesting when protestants try to cling to Augustine for legitimacy in their belief systems, as if to say "See, our beliefs aren't manmade inventions, Augustine kinda sounds like us." Read what Augustine and his early church contemporaries had to say about sacraments, apostolic succession, Mary, and the canon of Scripture - it's pretty clear that Bible alone, faith alone, and double-predestination were nowhere on their radar as orthodox Christian beliefs.
@stephenhigginbotham8523
@stephenhigginbotham8523 4 месяца назад
@@chasedudek3136 The essence of the debate was on the nature of the heart/will of man. Was it created good as Palagius taught, or was it radically corrupted by the fall as Augustine argued. Yes, the implications of the debate is that if the heart is “Fundamentally Good” then it doesn’t need grace to save it from itself, which is why Augustine thought it was so important. You are right about double predestination. Most calvinists don’t believe in double predestination, and I don’t think Calvin ever taught it. Double predestination would be pointless as we are already naturally separated from God as our hearts are “fundamentally corrupt” as Augustine taught. Maybe it seams like splitting hairs over semantics, but that is true of many other ecumenical councils that convened to discuss doctrine. Because of the implications of these words. Yes maybe the pope is trying to say that man is created for good works, but he is using the verbiage of Pelagius here and that has bad implications.

Even within the church the term conservative often used very differently than in the US. In the US conservatism is synonymous with anyone that is is pro life, religious, traditional, etc. All things that the Pope is and supports yet he criticizes "conservatives." This is were we have to use some critical thinking and realize that we aren't talking about the same thing and not rush to be offended so quickly. This has and will always be present in Catholicism. That is that there are people from all over the world and the majority and most important people are not from the US. The Pope cannot be infallible because only Christ is infallible along with his Scripture. It's just ridiculous. I also take great issue with calling the Pope "Holy Father." @@EamonnDoylePhotoFilm In my view the biggest issue of the church really comes down to idolatry of the Pope and priests. When you put a person’s authority at the same level as Jesus and His Word it’s really bad. So rather than the problem being the name they call someone in in of itself, it is in equating their teachings to Jesus’s. We see this become especially impactful on people’s day-to-day lives when everything the Pope says is essentially worshiped, even if it’s missing the instructions of the Gospel or teaching the contrary. To think that after the Catholic Church stopped participating in wars and indulgences, it somehow transcended the culprit of its historic heresy, is wishful thinking. We see the same modern day level of heresy in the annulment process, which was absent in the original early church for hundreds and hundreds of years-the early church, against which all heresy is defined. If you really want to see the reality of God in someone’s doctrine, look no further than the early church’s consensus on that specific matter.

And look at the Pope's background, he's a Liberal Theologist as most Catholics in South America are. Just look at a brief video on Liberal Theology and it explains a lot of why Pope Francis says what he does and why he frames the things he says the way he does.

Michael, it's not just the Old Testament that declares we are ALL sinners but it is all over the New Testament. Romans 6:11-12 says, "There is no one righteous, NOT EVEN ONE." AND Romans 6:23, "ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." To say that some are righteous in the old testament, as you said, shows a fundamental misunderstanding of scripture. The "righteous" in the old testament were declared righteous by their FAITH and not by their good works. In the New Testament, people are declared righteous when they put their faith in Jesus to atone for sin but that doesn't mean we are then not sinners. The fundamental teaching in the bible is that ALL HAVE SINNED. There is a book out, written by former priests in the catholic church, who say that they never read the bible! I wonder if this Pope has read the bible? If he had, he would step down from being pope because the bible says we are all one in Christ. No one is higher than another.

I love and pray for Pope Francis every day in my Rosary for him to change, but I think he's a bad pope. I believe we got the Bible, which has the historically reliable documents The Gospels, from the Church, and the Church precedes the New Testament, and through the history of the popes, the Catholic Church can be traced back to Jesus establishing it as His Church, and even before that, when God raised up the people of Israel, that was the community. The Bible was not read in isolation. They would read the Bible with and through the community. And just like as Christians for 2,000 years, we read the Bible with and through the Church, the lens of the interpretation of the Magisterium which is the teaching office of the Church and the motherly role of the Church. And something like praying the Rosary is not something the Magisterium created, it was something people voluntarily started to do, and it eventually put its blessing on it. I believe Jesus is the one mediator, and everything flows through Him. He is the center of all things, and in Him, all things came to be. There is instrumental causality that God loves to use amongst His created universe. The power of intercessory prayer, and the power of the intercession of the saints is about that. Hebrew 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. James 5:16-17 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful. Elijah was a human being like us; yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit. Jesus Christ is the mediator, and I believe our Blessed Mother Mary can lead us to Him. She prays for us on our way to Him. When I refer to Mary as my mother, please know I am not taking away respect due to my one and only God, Lord Jesus Christ. I believe loving people Jesus loves helps us love Him more, so the more I love Mary, the more I love God, and Jesus gave Mary to us as our mother on the Cross. John 19: 26-27 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. Mother Mary, the first Christian with her choice to say "yes" to my one and only God's will, I believe she is the number 1 model for sainthood for both men and women. She did God's will perfectly in every respect from the moment of her conception, listening to every single one of His commands. Her choice to say "yes" Luke 1:38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. to God's will ushered in salvation for the world, and she did so knowing the sacrifices and sufferings that would result from her decision, but, humbly, accepted the privilege of containing the God of the Universe her womb, and then becoming Jesus' most intimate friend, companion, and greatest consolation while on Earth. She was the devil's ultimate humiliation! I believe God is the King of the universe, having all power of the universe, but God chose Our Lady, a humble lowly woman the privilege of crushing the head of the devil. She is not God. She is a saint, but being that she is with Jesus in Heaven, I ask for her intercession to our Lord (and for sake of brevity, I'll say I "pray to Mary"), similar to how I'd ask people pray for me (please do! I'm a broken sinner in need of many prayers), but I trust she is a saint in Heaven so I believe it is helpful to ask for her help, especially being so close to her Son. There is only one God. He is the source of all good. He is Goodness. He is Love! One of my favorite verses to reference to bring to mind the dignity of life- When Mother Mary was pregnant with Jesus, she went on an about eighty mile joyous journey to visit her cousin Saint Elizabeth (patron saint of expectant mothers and pregnant women) in her hour of need, Elizabeth said referencing her tiny child in her womb John the Baptist who was conceived when she was in old age: Luke 1:41-44 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Hope you and your family have a good day, Michael. John 13:34-35 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” "To love is to will the good of another." -St. Thomas Aquinas "If we turn away from evil out of fear of punishment, we are in the position of slaves. If we pursue the enticement of wages, . . . we resemble mercenaries. Finally if we obey for the sake of the good itself and out of love for him who commands . . . we are in the position of children." -St. Basil the Great “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” -Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta John 17: 20-21 '“I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me."

Hey Michael. Reformed christian (Calvinist) here. I would just like to clarify the position that Calvinists hold regarding human nature, righteousness and goodness. We do believe that there are righteous people. Examples can be found throughout the old and new testaments, however, we believe that that goodness is IN SPITE of our inherent sinful nature. It only comes from the grace that God gives, not from within ourselves or because of our own decisions/mindset. This is why we believe in faith alone through Jesus Christ as the way to salvation. These are the words Pope Francis spoke: "People are fundamentally good. We are all fundamentally good...The heart itself is good." Either Pope Francis has never read the Bible or is purposefully deceiving people, because there's no way you can read Scripture and come to the conclusion that people are fundamentally good and the heart is good. Jeremiah 17:9 - "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" Psalm 51:5 - "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me." Romans 3:10 - "as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;" Ephesians 2:1-5 - "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved." I can continue, but the entire point of the Gospel - the Good News - is that there is a way OUT of that unrighteousness through the blood of Jesus Christ. If Pope Francis can't even get the basic Gospel message down correctly, how can millions (billions?) of Christians look to him as a leadership figure? This isn't a small mistake or a slip of the tongue, this is a HUGE difference from what Scripture teaches and all you need to do to confirm that is go read it yourself.

Knowles that was a desperate attempt to defend your head boss. Bible plainly says the heart is wicked above all else. Knowles says, "I don't see it" in regards to defending pope. I don't think the Pope is criticizing conservatism, on the contrary, he makes it clear that there are things worth conserving (tradition, culture, religion). I think he's just talking about fanatics, that is, people who cling to an idea and fight for it to never change. They are blind to the point of hurting themselfs.

Pope splain this: Leviticus 18:22 has been translated in common English versions as: Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; such a thing is an abomination. And when you’re an abomination you try to obscure that bit of scripture. What would St Catherine of Siena say?

@@daltonnelson94 Why did you stop at that? ‭Matthew 23:8-10 ESV‬ [8] But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. [9] And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. [10] Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. You wanna know why your misinterpretation of this passage is terrible? Here: Use of "Father" in OT “So it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a FATHER to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt” (Gen. 45:8). “I was a FATHER to the poor, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know” (Job 29:16) “In that day I will call my servant Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah . . . and I will clothe him with [a] robe, and will bind [a] girdle on him, and will commit . . . authority to his hand; and he shall be a FATHER to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah” (Isa. 22:20-21) Use of "Father" in NT: ‭Acts 7:2-3 ESV‬ [2] And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our FATHER Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, [3] and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’ Was St Stephan disobeying Christ's "commandment" by calling Abraham "our Father"? ‭‭Romans 9:10 NKJV‬ [10] And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our FATHER Isaac Did St Paul disobey Christ's "commandment" by calling Isaac "our father"? Use of the titles "Rabbi/Teacher" and "Instructor": “For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle . . . a TEACHER of the Gentiles in faith and truth” (1 Tim. 2:7) “For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and TEACHER” (2 Tim. 1:11) “God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third TEACHERS” (1 Cor. 12:28) So what did Jesus mean? It's simple, just read the context and the entire paragraph instead of cutting verses. ‭Matthew 23:2-12 NKJV‬ [2] saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. [3] Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. [4] For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. [5] But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. [6] They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, [7] greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ [8] But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. [9] Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. [10] And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. [11] But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. [12] And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. In short, Jesus acknowledged the authority of the Pharisees and the Scribes because they "sit in Moses' seat". He then instructs the Jews to follow what they say and not what they do. He rebukes the Pharisees and the Scribes for their HYPOCRISY and PRIDE. He says that these people love lavishness and the luxury of being in their positions and boast about it. They feel pride when they are called "Rabbi". So Jesus says that we should not call anyone on Earth Rabbi, Father, or Instructor because ultimately, God is the standard of all these titles. Finally, Jesus says his main message, that we shall be humble and that the greatest among us shall be like a servant. So basically, Jesus was just using some figures of speech and exaggerating things to rebuke the hypocrisy and pride of the Pharisees and Scribes to teach us the lesson of humility.

All the Catholics that I know, feel that Pope Francis has put his political/social agenda ahead of his first priority which should be preaching repentance and turning from our sins.
