As a newly injured wheelchair user this is something I never thought I could do and actually makes me more motivated to practice my wheelchair basics so I can try this! Thank you so much for this!
I completely agree. Don't be overcome by your disability, overcome your disability and turn it into 'ability'. You will find, with practice and experience that you are capable of much more than you ever thought possible. I've used a wheelchair since I was big enough to fit into one, so for me it's 'normal' for want of a better word. But for a newly injured wheelchair user like yourself, it's about redefining what 'normal' is.
Chelsea Holbrook Definitely check out Richard’s other videos on wheelchair skills, transfers, etc. his videos by far have helped me more than others plus they’re entertaining 😂 good luck! And keep pushing forward 👊
@@Wheels2Walking I got one for my 11 yr old nephew and it is great, bought it from Walmart ( believe it ir not for $600 free shipping) I got in touch with the FreeWheel company for install info and they were very good. I ended up having to do a footrest modification to my nephew’s wheelchair but not a big deal. I seriously recommend the FreeWheel. PS, your girlfriend is great!
On a separate note, I borrowed a ‘freewheel’ for the hike, which is basically an extra big caster in front of your chair. Basically what it does is absorb the shock of going over bumps and rocks and stuff, plus keeps your casters off the ground so you don’t have to hold a wheelie the whole time. It’s definitely useful for any kind of off-roading, but they’re kind of expensive, so I’d imagine it depends on how willing you are to spend on it and the extent of your disability.
Koa The Manokit I love it for sure. Though I had to ask a hardware crew to install the different foot pedal attachment to get it adjusted. The directions weren’t perfect lol.
😆 at 64 I think I will live vicariously through you 2, on the trails that is. We took the kids to the zoo with paved hills. Thank God my daughter who is yalls age & very fit was there. 💪😆 I realized this ol (not old) lady NEEDS to tune up my wheelchair skills big time. 😆😆 😆 You & Julia (sp) Forgive me if I spelled her name wrong. I think you 2 are awesome wheelchair or not. The love I see there & the laughter is so refreshing to see in couples of any age now days. You 2 are Blessed. ❤🤗
This is reassuring. The hardest part of accepting my new mobility issues has been the thought of never being able to wander in woodland again. Now I know I can.
It looks like a fun thing to do but I wouldn’t want to fall and risk breaking my arm preventing me from being able to be independent as I am. Been paralyzed 25 years I thank god I can do everything pretty much by myself. But I commend you for giving people inspiration to not give up.
In my case, I change the front wheels for a 200x 50 millimeter roll and I can go over rocks or roots without doing a wheelie all the time, although sometimes you have to do wheelies. But even for flat terrain they absorb better the holes in the streets, Sorry for the rustic of my English, greetings.
AAAAAMAZING!! You two inspire me. My husband is newly injured and these months have been sad and arduous. AND you give me hope!! You should have your gal join our WAGS group, (Wives and Girlfriends of SCI Survivors), there is also the WAGS page, but the former is much more personal and real on FB. She would be a plethora of inspo for those of us who had to endure this injury and devastation! Even though she did not go through the heartache, she could be a catalyst of what our future could be.
My dad was injured 3 years ago. I believe you. You are doing an amazing job. Don't forget to take care of yourself. Ask for help when you need it. I am always thankful for every tiny milestone we make. This year I thankful we could do yard work. We still have someone mow, but we were able to spray and weedeat with accommodations. During the first few months we were thankful he could sit on a toilet instead of using a bedpan.
Hey there ! How are you doing with all the covid ? I wanted to thank you personally because as an able-bodied person , I dont really know about he dissabled community just because I wasn't part of it. You taught me to be better member of society and for that I will be always grateful. Stay safe and healthy! Lots of love from Israel 💚
@@Wheels2Walking She is. Im really happy for you both. Seeing this helps me. Because when I become disabled 3yrs ago & divorced I thought women cant look at me. Realise after seeing this and previous videos it is possible.
I've used a wheelchair since I was big enough to fit into one and I'm now 48, so, in a sense I'm the fortunate one. Thank you for showing those who haven't used a wheelchair for very long, that this kind of thing is indeed possible.
@@JahJJMac Good grief! Fancy meeting you on RU-vid! How are you Rach? Are you on Facebook? Look for me if you are and I'll add you. I'm friends with your mum and dad anyway! Ha! I can't believe it!
I can imagine that an able bodied person would often want to intervene and not trust you to be able to do it. But I guess after 2 years Jalila and Andrew know your capabilities and know you are prepared to fall. Great energy in the video, good to get out and experience nature!
Great adventure man. You are a strong one. I really have a luxury handicapped but long-distance hikes can be painful sometimes. But your wheelchair skills are outstanding. Much respect! Have a wonderful day. Best wishes, Mario
I remember one time, my wife was pushing me up hill. She told me to stop pushing. I said are you sure? So I did. She quickly realized that me pushing was actually making it alot easier lol.
Thank you so much for sharing this. When I found out I was losing the use of my legs one of the first thoughts I had was I have to go hiking as much as possible before I am in a wheelchair all the time. Now I know I don’t have to give up going hiking. I have been researching everything about hiking with a wheelchair and haven’t found much. So this video is a big help.
🤣🤣🤣 the reaction she had soon as you made it down that ramp fast. (The Ohhh shoot!! Face and arms up) seen that so many times by friends and family when I do crazy stuff 🤣🤣
I'm so glad you made this video. I loved to go hiking but I though I couldn't do it because I got hurt and that's what my doctors and parents said. Thanks for all the tips and helping to show me and others in wheelchairs that we can still do so much stuff.
Hey man. I love your channel I am not in a wheelchair or have any handicap but I enjoy learning about it. You seem so nice from the comments I have talked to you in and you seem like you are actually like your subscribers and enjoy them. Other RU-vidrs with fewer subs then you act like they are to cool for you and usually seem to be jerks. I love your content am always excited when I get a notification saying Wheels2Walking just uploaded a new video. Love the vids keep up the great work.
That was an evil laugh. Jalida, great name. Who ever came up with it did a great job. And you look like my granddaughter who is a dancer. Have a great 2023.
this reminds me when i was homeless here in harrisburg,pa i lived in a tent that was at the bottom of a hill my wife girlfreind at the time was scared that i would fall trying to get up or down the hill. glad to see im not the only one crazy enough to go hiking in my wheelchair
Excellent Jalila and Richard , I just love 💕 trails before and after my spinal injury , but now I am loving 🥰 you both more than the trails .... when I come back to Atlanta will do a together trip
I needed to reach out and thank you for making this video. I met my best friend six years ago, and we have been hiking nonstop ever since. That was until a very serious accident she had over a month ago. She is still in the hospital, but she is so incredibly strong. She has improved to the point that she is transferring herself multiple times a day and she spends as much time as she can moving around in her wheelchair. We've obviously both been very uncertain about the future, having to change almost all of our plans for it. In complete honesty, its still really scary for me, but I can honestly say that watching this video is the first time I have actually felt happy since the accident. Seeing you out on the trail working hard and having a genuinely good time with it makes me feel so differently about everything. I'm watching you guys and I said "of course we can do that!" So seriously, thank you. I really appreciate that you put this together and posted it.
So I know that there is 'downhill mountain biking', but does anyone do that sort of crazy in a wheelchair ?? That is a video I would certainly watch. That is a great workout you guys just had. Very cool.
Wheelchair user since birth (27 years) and that big rocky/rooted down hill really gave my anxiety. Still always anxious about those types of down hills
I'm wanting to go hiking. I can't hold a Wheely for more than half a second. Been looking at heavier duty tires and a freewheel at the very least. - that's a few months income though. I looked into the company who makes my chair, they don't recommend using it for off-road stuff. So I'm waiting on their NHS representative in my area to call to see if, IF any adaptions can be made to my chair that would make it safer. We've found atleast two paths that would be safe and easy enough. Not close by, so require some kit for napping afterward. I live in Scotland, most of our land is not even suitable for people to walk in let alone wheel on haha. But we're gonna try.
Nice vid. Def a thing for people that have their basics on a confident level. Those gloves def helped allot, i bet! One lil tip for rough terrain to go over, just go backwards and our friend pulls too. LoopWhoop showed me that pushing backwards is a stronger pull rather than a push. And i'm thinking that the OneWheel would be good to help all terrain trails too
Well I see someone mentioned the go free wheel and the off-road tires or mountain tires which definitely make all of that super easier than what you two were doing. Still a really good video
@@morgancalvi6675 I just watched the video with Chris in it it looked interesting I never knew there was such a thing as a hand cycle Just a FYI I'm able-bodied but still love to watch his videos
i have foundyears ago, if i need to go up a real steep hill ill turn around and i will wheel backwards, like im rowing in a way, , it works great, you shouuld try it it really does work quite well
I think it is awesome how much you go and do. I am stuck at home because my ins. Refuses to pay for an ultralight fitted wheelchair even though I have had a total of 5 spinal surgeries and the last 3 were total failures. Rods and pain for nothing. My husband is disabled as well, but doesn't use a wheelchair, but can't lift anything over 15 pounds and either can I so I watch your videos as I am stuck home for the 5th year. My dream is to have a wheelchair like yours. I don't know how you stay positive because I can't anymore. I only leave my house every 60 days to go to the Dr. and that's it, United Healthcare sucks. They brought me a 47 pound wheelchair and said it is lightweight and it is a useless pos, so thanks to them I do nothing, and I used to race dirtbikes, now I sit and watch the grass grow. exciting huh. Have fun glad someone is.
Freewheel would be perfect for trails like this and so easy to install and detach. It’s a wheel that is bigger than the casters and it lift your casters off of the ground so you have on,y one bigger and really flexible wheel in front of your wheelchair. They are around 200$ and can be used with your everyday chair 😊
For my dad since he is a big guy and very adventurous I accompany him most of the time. I stand behind him when most of the time to save space. If we are on a hill or gravel or grass I will offer to push him he let's me. But as soon as it gets easier I let him go. He knows he needs the exercise and doesnt mind. He unloads and loads his own chair. Normally when we get home he is tired and I will unload his chair for him.
A wheelchair user myself, i have something called a wheelchair freewheel. its an additional wheel you attach to your leg rest, in the middle. It raises the front fwheels off the ground and makes offroading easier. Would recommend that.
Great job navigating that trail. It does look difficult cause I’m not as into fitness as you are so I will need to start doing exercises to gain muscle and lose fat so I can be a pro.
Try the Dunwoody Nature Center, it is about what I saw today. I go over everything in my 8x Extreme but as a high functioning quadriplegic, I couldn't do this in a manual chair.
Thank you for the link for the trails, I live in Canada in a very small town so was not sure the All Trails would work for my town, but it did! I know we don't have a lot I can access as I do not drive so I can't get to some of them, but one of them looks accessible, there is also one we take to town that did not come up on the map but is 100% accessible. I also use a power chair and not a manual, so wow watching you do the trail in your chair was tiring! Way to go :-) It was funny to heck with the turtle! As for the deer that was cool, we have deer in our backyard all the time and I never get tired of seeing them.
Hahaha! I was one of the ones goin “aww helllll no” 😂😂😂😂 I’m still working on that fat burnin workout. I do trails in Austin with my sis but most are paved. Gonna venture out to some other trails soon. Keep getting after it!!
I went hiking in Montana a couple of weeks ago; it was okay for the first stretch, but going back up was a painful ordeal; my father had to do a lot of pushing help on those steep hills.
It's great to encourage people that life is not over, that they can do stuff, etc. but let's get real, some of us can't do this, I've got the skills, I don't have the strength, maybe I could get the strength, but I could never take the risk of injury. Frankly if I told any of my medical professionals I was going to try this they'd probably have a heart attack.
Awesome! I live on a farm and the arch enemy of the wheelchair is sand. You and Jalila look and work great together, you guys keep up the great work and keep inspiring.😁👍👍 PS McDonald's doesn't have the beef either pretty sure it's hamster lol😂
8:00 - Jalila: "you did not put your mouth on that" Me: HE LICKED DEAD FLIES OFF OF A CAR - 😂 Also - you guys are adorable, you remind me of me and Lou 🥰
