When he said “honor doesn’t matter” I think he meant it from the public’s perspective of him, because after that he says “whether I become a criminal or something else, I just want to spread my name throughout the world” so he would still have his own morals just doesn’t care how the world views him

This scene isn’t about his loyalty to Luffy at all, it’s about him accepting that he’s a king and learning to prioritize his own ambition as much as luffy’s. The friend in question is kuina not Luffy.

in the german translation they sad "FreundIN" meaning female friend, he meant kuina but english language has no word for it lol

Not sure about that , zoro is the only person to lose someone close to him who had a dream . This would be like one of the crew dying suddenly for no apparent reason. I don't know if sanji would even recover as his character is not stoic as an example. Not only that but he inherited someone's dream which is why he carries her sword in his mouth . No one else on the crew is carrying two people's dreams . They also didn't have to see the death of a friend and push through it on their own . I think he had one of the worst experiences, him and brook. Sanjis is sad but zef was heroic , namis was sad but her mum was heroic , all of the characters had something to hold on to even though they suffered. My man zoro had no one but his training and dedication to the art of swordsmanship. Look how broken Luffy was after ace , zoro pushed through it by himself. Oh and he was an orphan no adopted anything

Non saddest? He lost Kuina *right after* they made their promise to be the best swordsman in the world. Far from it.

@@bja235 I'll add one more thing Luffy and zoro are a partial reflection of lord Hanuman and lord Rama but reversed I say partial because oda has many influences. Luffy is Hanuman the loyal companion of Rama who is zoro that's the reverse part. The reason why I bring this up is because like zoro, Rama suffers throughout his life yet he never breaks once . In the story of Rama and Hanuman to save sita Hanuman has powers but rama is just a normal guy that's extremely talented and hardworking, he was a human avatar of God. Sword God ...my name will reach the heavens...One piece is about dreams and inherited will zoro is the only person on the crew who's witnessed first hand what's that like for a loved one to never achieve it , it's more than just a loss which is why he states he doesn't believe in God. The reason people don't think zoro is suffering is because he doesn't make noise like everyone else he just carries on silently.

@Benjamin Allison What about Usopp? The only sad part of his backstory was losing his mother and becoming the town fool...the latter on purpose, and while losing a parent is pretty tragic, he still had it easier than the others. In comparison, Zoro lost both his parents and Kuina.

bro stop listening to these idiots he's referring to luffy that's why that statement came after THEIR flashback(zoro & luffy) not a flashback of both luffy and kuina. Kuina was just his rival at the dojo he was at when he was growing up. Never said that was his friend nor did he look at her as a friend he just wanted to surpass her because she was stronger at the time

Uh well. About that… You see the best friend he is referencing is kuina, not Luffy. This was done as zoro’s realization of his two ambitions, become the strongest swordsmen for kuina and protect his crew from any danger as their knight.

I think he is referencing Luffy with both of those. Kuina is not included in the mini flashback, just Luffy. Besides, Kuina was more a rival than a best friend. It makes much more sense for Zoro to be talking about Luffy here@@mr.regular589

Never thought about it since he didn't say "my captain and to my bestfriend" which would mean 2 different Characters. And they would've included a clip of kuina before zoro's statement if they wanted her to take the credit. I highly doubt the animators and writers made a mistake. Considering how well written and made One Piece is.

Actually the best friend nod is to Kuina...who is coincidently a member of the Shimotsuki family which really ties everything all together.
