That X5 was actually a very nice example. Seems like with all the miles, it must have been maintained very well. Someone loved it! But to quote Scotty, “they’re endless money pits as they age.” And that’s even if you can wrench on it yourself. 👍👍👍
I became a Mechanic working with my X5 2006 3.0D i Also have an F15 (F85) V8 2016, but i still love my old 2006 x5, if there isn't an issue I'm not good with it, the x5 2006 has 250,000 Miles (changed injectors, turbo, mechanical pump rings, electric pumps) and runs like a baby is my go to work Vehicle, the f15 is a monster, i bought it for 35,000 usd as a bet i couldn't fix it since the owner did an turbo upgrade and thought it blew the engine, (it was a easy fix, blown gasket, intake was not regulated), the fix costed around 600 usd
@@luistejada2665 same I became a mechanic working on my 10 328i BMW 179,000 miles (changed alternator, vanos solenoid, ignition coils, spark plugs, maf sensor etc) saved so much money buying parts from fcp or going to autozone or O’Reillys & doing them myself than taking it to a shop stop the misfiring and everything you can’t even tell it’s on just took it on a 8 hour drive okc to San Antonio tx this Christmas & ol Betsy drove fine there & back bmw is good cars if kept maintained
I have the X5M version of this. They are notorious for leaking water from the sunroof. It collects in the rear RH fuse area and damages the tailgate module and the rear camera module. Check that area Randy I guarantee you thats what had happened. Luckily mine was fixed all modules replaced and reprogrammed under warranty. Good luck.
Hey Randy! That Camera light with an exclamation point means there might be a problem with one of the onboard cameras or a problem with the camera module. I hope you & everyone here has a great day!
@@johnwaugh4680 Definitely not. This generation of BMW (or any car) wouldn't have technology like that. I don't even know of many new cars that have that feature except Mazda I think I've seen it on? Would LOVE to have that on my car though hahaha
@@lukeheffernan Ok...fair enough. I was just thinking that because my common old 2017 Ford Escape has it together with audible warnings but as you suggest it is a progress in tech. since that BMW.
@@johnwaugh4680 I don't know when the first traffic light detection systems came on the market.. BMW is a company that usally puts a lot of technology into their cars but I think Mercedes currently takes that to the next level.
Hi Randy, I'm not a BMW fan but this us a diamond in the rough, "No Key", I bet the staff were surprised to see it drive away! Great work. Beautiful house!
You just said a mouth full! Buy used and fix it yourself! When the car gets too bad, sell it and get another one. Switch up when you want to and stay away from that awful depreciation and expensive payments and high insurance. That's what I have done for years and I have my home payed for with the money I save every month on payments and high full coverage insurance. I have a great savings in the bank and feel secure! I have been able to enjoy many cars too. I have stuck with the panther platform the last 15 years. They are cheap and cheap and easy to work on and VERY reliable.
As a 2008 X3 and a 2013 X5 owner, I found that the X3 feels so small comparatively. The Turbo on the 2013 makes a huge difference in power/torque over the older 3 liter in the 2008.
I have it's twin - black 2008 3.0 si. Had the same valve cover issue, leaking oil filter housing and radiator leak. Paid the dealer $100 diagnostic fee, they printed out all the defects with part numbers. I found the OEM parts online and ordered the radiator, gaskets, BMW oil, filters (oil, air and cabin) and iridium plugs for $500. Did the labor myself, saved over $4K for what the dealer wanted. But, it since has had to a water pump and is now needing some suspension items. Yes, they are money pits, but fun to drive. I also had the problem with the rear hatch and changing the limit settings in the menu allowed it to work.
I'd say get a "newer" one like a 2015-2018 from a dealership with a warranty and people love these cars. I'd say you guys should really consider looking at one!
@@MGalaxy It's Randy we are talking about here. He will get a new one when the warranty expires. I doubt he would have issues unless its lemon lawed like the C7 Vette he had.
Indicator is a parkview camera fault. Check wiring at tailgate hinge. These inline 6 engines are the reason why I fell in love with bmws. If you run into any issues I can help you through them. Check engine is probably ignition related. No big deal. Great win sir!
I've been BMW and Porsche fanatic since 1972, However, I've owned 6 BMW's and 3 Porsche's to date. Seems the Porsche is twice as reliable as the BMW. But, that doesn't matter. I LOVE a good BMW !! You made a good find Bro.
That's a big score Randy! Congrats! ✌️ And yes, they are very very comfortable with a great driving experience! It's the same on my '02 E39 Touring 525D ❤️
We never got those in the states I dont think unfortunately. I have an 05 x5 3.0, an 01 e38 740il and an e39 530i manuel. And I absolutely love them and my e39 has over 400,000 miles
I love my European cars! I’ve balanced it out though, I have my reliable Holden’s that cost me nothing but general maintenance like oil and filters, then I have the Mercedes… dang she loves to break. Back to AirMatic now but they are very comfortable and I’ve managed 305,000kms
I am the original owner of a 2004 X5 3.0i that I ordered and is fully optioned. It has 85k miles on it and other than new front bushings, a couple gaskets to solve minor oil leaks and normal maintenance, it has been flawless. It still drives like new and I absolutely love how it feels on the road. It is built like a tank, extremely safe, and puts my Audi A4 to shame with the way it feels and drives. I know I should probably sell it before major repairs are needed but I honestly love it too much to part with it.
I have a 2006 3.0d x5 and has 310k on the clock worth nothing to anyone else but I love it and it's cost me thousands over the years but she's a good old girl
I have had the same car for 6 years. I do my own work. I always wanted a pick up truck but this SUV is very comfortable. It is a simple 6 cylinder. The valve cover takes an afternoon, I have a new one in my basement just in case. The wife drives a RAV4, no comparison. Toyota very reliable but not nearly as comfortable.
I’m glad you pointed out the repair challenges on these. Everyone thinks Northstar is the only vehicle w/ starter under the intake manifold. Honestly you get used to it if you fool w/them enough. Does not diminish the reliability of the platform IMHO.
Alright. I noticed not a single response from Randy to any of the posts related to the Cadillac from the other day, however you ask everyone to comment on whether you should consider buying it. I noticed you have responded to both BMW posts since. Most of the posts for the Caddy were positive and encouraging to buy it. Ultimately the decision is yours. What I can say is buying two older BMWs requires an old fashioned cure,; two aspirin for the pains they will cause to your head and where you sit plus several hours of watching Scotty Kilmer repeating BMWs are endless money pits!!
I really don't understand why people complain about BMW maintenance. You want to drive best driving vehicle, you have to pay up.I owned BMWs for 30 years now,and only bad thing about them are oil leaks. And that maintenance, change oil every 4k with high quality oil, make sure that you don't worn brakes to the metal,do alignment every year and that is pretty much it.I have 2 of BMWs now e60 and e70 35d and I love it.This diesel is monster especially after scr dpf delete. In the end if you want to own BMW you have to have money for someone to do that stuff for you or you have to do by yourself.Just don't ignore when you see or feel something is not right.Common sense.
I owned a 09 X5 V8 for 6 years. Total in repairs alone was $20,000 during the course of my ownership. Luckily I owned a extended warranty LOL they literally dropped my coverage LOL but I loved the car. Sold it for good money this past summer Covid pricing helped me get a good chunk of my money back.
That BMW was a steal. You always picked out a gem from the Auction. The only drawback to these cars is the price of parts and labor. You have to have a deep pocket to own one. I love my Toyota Camry. It takes a beating and keeps on ticking 👍👍
I never understood why people who drive and love their Camry's watch these types of RU-vid videos. Most people buy Camry's because they don't like to or know how to wrench on engines or do mechanical work.
Try out an Alfa Romeo Stelvio for handling. It is way better handling SUV, than my previous lowered(3-1/4") Mazda CX5. It would be a good idea to keep it and get rid of the car payment. Get a new hatch, hopefully with good struts and you have a nice car.
So are you going to replace the valve cover and gasket, or is it to much $$$? You should add another key fob for the next owner. Your persistence at finding keys for non starters is paying off.
Hello, not bad example,I have a 2009 x5 msport 35d,286bhp,20inch mspoke alloys in Titansilver metallic,I had to get a few bits for it,but like you said they drive really well,I had to get 2 new ballasts and xenon’s for the headlights,a complete offside rear brake/fog light unit, and a new offside coil spring, and a new battery, which you have to register with a obd scanner tool, but apart from that,I love it.Great video pal.
Oh that camera light could be from a malfunctioning backup camera I seen your video when you were putting it in reverse that it didn’t appear but I could be wrong.
Randy, you have your Pros and Cons here. YES, that valve cover is expensive and a pain to replace, same with the spark plugs and coils but the great thing is the car is paid for. You have no car note to worry about and it looks decent still. Because it's an AWD vehicle, you also will need to see when the transfer case oil was changed and also see if it has other oil leaks. Remember, if it doesn't leak oil; it's not a BMW 😂
Hey Randy, been watching you since you played around with cars part time after work. I love how far you've come, you seem so happy man! Anyway, my mom bought a brand new volvo v70 t5 in 2001 and that thing handled like a race car. It hauled ass for a station wagon and hugged the road like a corvette or something. Definitely get what you mean when you say the driving experience is top notch. The thing that killed that volvo for the family was how much everything cost. We couldn't get it out of the dealer for under a grand every time. Even the liftgate latch assembly and struts was like 1400 lol, but man she ran like a top when my parents had some company haul her off for $400 in 2015. $42000 in 2001, $400 in 2015 and it ran and drove just fine
I bought a 2004 V70 with 224K miles at my local auction for 600. checked the spark plugs and they were the originals! replaced them all and a faulty coil and that thing ran brand new! sold it 8 months later for 1200. I miss it all the time, great great cars.
Amazing find, as someone who is turning 18 within the next year I am eager to get into Copart and check out the cars on the lot even if I'm not buying.
Randy, I’m loving the European car content and the Asian car content as well as the American car content even though that particular BMW is quintessentially European it’s a South Carolina built BMW.
This is identical to the one I had ten years ago, except mine had that saddle brown/baseball glove color interior. I was glad to see it go, but watching this video has me feeling nostalgic. It’s like a siren call.
I’d think of it as the average car payment must be around 500-600 a month so if you buy something like that for a little over 2k if you get 5 months out of it without putting any real money into it you got your money out of and you could send it back to auction at any point
Randy, I have been following you for a long time but with all do respect I so miss when you're fixing the problems with the cars. I know you are in the middle of moving and that takes a long time. I hope when the move is all over we can see some wrenching with your cars. And let me just say, Happy Holidays to you and Jessica and you're family.
Jessica and you had the right decision. Those things after so many years are potential money pits. Have you seen Hoovies Garage episode with the X5? The exhaust line was so expensive to replace and few other parts so costly to service that he decided to sell it to the scrapyard. One thousand times any Lexus SUV or Toyota than that. BMW's are good for 100k Miles or to be used under warranty.
I've got a 2006 version of this car. Mine has the sticker in the glove box...was $68k. Have been able to do many projects on it....(door handle carrier today).. these are tanks but with a little knowhow and youtube, these cars are do-able. Certain things are outrageous but...you're driving a high end car for Peanuts.
In Eastern Europe, this BMW costs between 10,000 and 15,000 euros. Diesels are significantly more expensive because 90% of diesel cars are driven in our country. Like yours, it's about 11,000 euros. And there are 5.0 i 360 horses that cost the same.
Boy did you call it right. My son has had 3 BMW's. Expensive to buy and their great. When they start to break watch out. Everything you said applies correctly. Have a great day.
I own an F10 535xi xdrive , 7 speed transmission, plenty power out of the box, for 3 years now. I replace parts before they break, with OEM , I replaced the valve cover gasket before it started leaking, and guess what, the gasket was no longer rubber, meaning it wasn’t malleable , no flex or bending . If you like me and including some others. I’m the type to get under my car , two or three times minimum a month To do a visual inspection, bushings, shocks , rotors and pads . If you Stay ahead of your maintenance (applies to any car) your German car will treat you good. The problem is poseurs give this car bad rep. Anyone can buy one new or used, but when is time to maintain one, they look away and drive it till the wheels fall off.
If maintenance history was good, wouldn't worry. As someone else said, check sunroof drains for blockage. Valve cover gasket should be a straightforward job, no worse than valve covers on a 2002 3.3 Nissan Frontier.
New ones might not necessarily be a better option. Those old inline 6 engines without turbo are reliable. It cannot be said about anything that BMW makes today I believe. It would be cool to see that car around. Although personally I am counting for some interesting sedan to stay longer on the channel 👍
Hard to watch your videos sometimes. I am trying to support your channel but hard. Content is always same. Buy car, wash than auction. Should show more of the process. Let viewers watch as it is being auctioned..show it live etc. You are a mechanic....why not fix some of cars up and try to get used parts and keeps cost low. MOST times you pay way too much for the cars right outside the gate..Need to try to get at a way lower price. Than fix on budget, sell at auction for profit..I know your gf is right...paying way to much than fixing than taking a loss...are you doing any research of the actual value of the cars at auction or just bidding with no research..just curious..and you will buy yourself the tesla or hellcat and why dont you do any content with those. I would do a race..tesla vs hellcat..ev vs v8...something different. Just trying to help.
The power tailgate may have failed because these cars are notorious for clogged sunroof drains. Water will pool up in the sunroof assembly, make its way down the d-pillar and pool up in the passenger side of the trunk where the tailgate module sits. It'll get flooded and ruined from that. My girlfriend's 2012 X5 had that happen to it. I'm so glad we sold that car now lol.
The brake light will go off when you replace the brake pads with the sensor, cheap thing. Such an amazing car for that price... thats unbeliable, Im jealous lol. Love this kind of videos on youtube
I had an 02 bmw 330 ci , it was a great car and I had to do a lot of things here and there but for 6 years we drove that thing. Still ran good when we traded it. You are too spooked , they are great cars .
You'll get more than you paid (and probably more than re-running it through) just by trading it at a dealer on something for Jessica .. (F-Pace time, surely?!). Epic Randy, really well deserved too! Cheers from Australia.
I’d search for another x5 that gen or newer with Low miles , if that one has 200k and still runs great I’d imagine you could get years out of one with less than 100k
Doesn't matter how much your car or truck is worth if your comfortable driving it and it's safe don't matter how much a repair is. You also mite be so deep in repairs that it's worth getting a vehicle fix cause you don't want start all over again with a new used one.
Good Coverage On That X5 Randy, She Cleaned Up Well.. German Vehicles Do Not Scare Me At All, I Own Seven Vehicles, Six Are German, I’m Not A Professional Mechanic, I’m An Engineer And A Tinkerer.. No Offense To Anyone, Japanese & Korean Vehicles Do Nothing For Me, Newer Domestic, Japanese, Korean Cars CVT’s, No.. Older Domestic Cars, I Enjoy Them As Well..
Great little SUV. Jessica deserves the best you can get her. You'll come up with something soon. Christmas is 2 weeks away so you better get busy. Ttyl buddy
That was a quick flip. 😮. The BMW is a good car IF you do the work yourself. Nothing is easy on them, so even simple things to fix take hours. The labour cost is what kills and torches the wallet. Parts seem pricey but really they are not excessive when comparing any high end domestic (Cadillac, Buick,..). I really enjoy our 328 and am looking at an X5. But if I did not do the maintenance myself I certainly would stay away from them. Oil leaks are common on every BMW. Either ignore and live with it or be prepared for hours-n-hours of labour to get to the gaskets to change them. The gaskets are really cheap $. It is the labour to get to them is what drains the bank.
Its not hard to change the starter. Cabin air filter system? You mean 8 bolts on the cowl. I've done it, yeah first time takes a while, but its not a lot of work considering the value and how reliable the n52 motor is.
I think that particular red 'Brake' light was showing the E-Brake engaged, and had nothing to do with the pads. The brake pad wear for both front and rear ones comes up as a yellow warning light or can be checked in the iDrive Menu. Source: I have a E70.
No way, that BRAKE light on the dash is really telling you to replace the pads. There is a resistor sensor on the left pads and when that got grinded down the light come up. The brake miles in Idrive is only an estimate. There was one time some idiot BMW mechanic replace pads/rotors without resetting. Idrive just kept telling me to replace the pads/rotor in 500 miles for years!
Have the same one but metallic blue. Only issue is you fix one problem another one pops up. F awesome cars when they run but with that Saud,it's like purchase at your own risk. You definitely spend more $ maintaining. Mines at purchase was 90k miles now I am hitting 123k. Had a gasket leak and the bmw dealer hit me with a bill of $1200, I almost fainted. 1st beamer and will be my last.
BMWs are some of the best cars to drive the only down side about them is when something goes wrong then it’s expensive to fix becuase parts don’t go down in price. Also some of the parts on the higher models are dealer sold only so you have no choice but to pay the amount the dealer asks for them When they are running good they are a joy to drive I work on my own cars so having owned and still own 2 bmws they don’t scare me but the price of the parts do sometimes 🤣 currently have a 2002 bmw e46 m3 and a 2013 bmw x6m that’s pushing 600hp+ but sadly they are going to be up for sale come this spring
I think it worth keeping since it running the way it is that tells you that whoever had it took somewhat good care of it i buy this in a heartbeat and just daily it still it not worth fixing and definitely change the wheel put some bigger M wheels on it called it a day.
If you could sale your cars retail, you could make more money. Especially on this one. She cleaned up extremely nice and the color combination with that interior is really eye catching.
exactly, even with the costs of a set of brake pads, the valve cover and gasket without cam sensor (which is only $200-$300), a little detailing, and some of the missing badging and bumper trim out back, one would be in it for $3000-$3200 which is the trade in value, and the sell values are anywhere from $5k private party to $8k retail even with these miles and the minor rear damage history
