To be a "real samurai", I think you'd have to be a descendant of an actual samurai family, no? Of course, the samurai class is not recognized in Japan anymore, but there must be quite a few people who can trace their ancestral lineage back to samurai families from before the Meiji period.

@@patientzero6366 Just saying, samurai is a mostly hereditary position. Since there aren't any daimyo around anymore to make samurai out of commoners. Save perhaps for the current Emperor of Japan. Just because you practice training with a Japanese sword it doesn't make you a samurai.

Are tatami mats similar to human limbs? I always thought the purpose of using them was that you need to use proper edge alignment to make a clean cut, because the properties of the tatami mat makes it so that it bends or frays if your edge alignment is off?
@Dustin_Frost
@Dustin_Frost 2 месяца назад
I think in one of Shogo's videos he talks about it. The technique for cleanly cutting a mat is different from what you would use in normal sword budo.
@levi2725
@levi2725 13 дней назад
@@Dustin_Frost Skallagrim mentioned that in one of his latest videos, that regularly doing mat cutting can actually worsen your combat skills, since it requires a lot more followup into the swings, while combat swings are supposed to be short and use as little power as necessary (or something like that)

I appreciate that those guys were just creating entertainment and a sort of training experience, but the trainee is never going to be challenging a "real samurai" unless he has a time machine hidden somewhere. Being a samurai isn't a result of any training, it's a social class and the training was the result of the status, not the other way around.

Wanna point out, when cutting the fruit, the youtuber was not pulling from his sheath. This makes it exponentially easier. (I posted this before i saw Shogo's response.. He agrees)

Not only that, but the youtuber was having someone throw the fruit to him, rather than throw it himself, so has less to worry about coordinating.

It's a cool video. I wanna emulate it, but this time, with a twist. Escrima, using a boken. (I know, I know. real Katanas are expensive for me, thus, a boken would do.) Is it doable? Yeah, though, the boken would be heavier, however, as escrima also have two-handed sword techniques. Two-sword techniques using katanas? It's difficult to pull as longer swords are heavier and have different balances. Perhaps, using two kodachis or two wakizashis.

@LetsaskShogo About Monouchi. According to Mr. Harada Kazuhiro sensei (8th dan hanshi), monouchi is only one point on the blade in balance with mekugi-ana (the hole in the hilt of the blade (nakago) is not in a random position). And believe that it should be called "monouchi area" for a better understanding, because this simplification leads to a bad interpretation. I am realy curious, can you please tell me how your teacher explain monouchi? I would really appreciate it 🙏, thanks

As you said in other vids, a Real katana should be made and have a certified Japan license to be called a katana. then in the fun videos, it wouldn't be insulting to use the 'non-legit' katanas to cut fruits of clash blades. or does it still projecting the disrespecting attitude toward the art?

It's very difficult whenever you dedicate serious time to anything. To not have harsh feelings of people, people that are jokingly enjoying the idea. I myself have been practicing martial arts for nearly 35 years now. I sometimes forget that those who play pretend sometimes develop a serious interest in serious subjects and may some day devote to become a master.
