The reason behind Clara Haber’s suicide is still mainly unknown. Some believe that her being a pacifist, lead to her ending her life due to Fritz’s hand in the creation of chemical weapons used in WW1. (reportedly calling their first use in the war “perversions of ideals of science”) While others say that she actually didn’t have too much opposition to his work in the creation of Chemical Warfare. Blaming it more on her dwindling connection to Fritz during their marriage as well as always being overshadowed in the world of science (mainly by Fritz himself) leading her to commit suicide. Either way she was against the war AND was becoming detached to Fritz Haber. (Side note: The night of her suicide Fritz was celebrating the first “successful” use of Chemical Weapons in the war)

I think in the Sabaton history, it was also mentioned that she was a scientist as well and never received credit for what she did as science was largely a man's game and she was living in a shadow.

What sets Haber apart from others who saw their inventions used in warfare is Haber was totally fine with the military application of his discovery and even created a rule, Haber's Rule, which determined how concentrated the gas must be and how long it would need to be breathed in order to cause death. IIRC, he even justified it by comparing chemicals to previous evolution of warfare between a knight and a gun and now a gun to gas as well as stating that because gas doesn't mutilate it's better in comparison to bullets or something along those lines. On the other hand, it probably can't even be estimated how many lives he's saved.
@Killermcknight
@Killermcknight Год назад
That's the conflict right. I wonder and I think it's correct to assume that he felt his military invention of gas like you stated was an evolution. But maybe he thought it was a more humane or sophisticated way to kill? Like how lethal injections are today.
@killer25014
@killer25014 Год назад
He also justified it by believing it would save more lives in the long run, because it would be *the* thing that would break the stalemate on the Western Front. Unfortunately for him and everyone else involved, it didn't.
@leechowning2712
@leechowning2712 Год назад
@@Killermcknight he believed, and quite correctly, that chemical weapons would be so destructive that nations which knew the other nation had these weapons would seriously reconsider attacking one another. Later we called this mutually assured destruction, and with the much more powerful nuclear weapons we actually did enter a nearly century of war being very restricted. Chemical weapons were so destructive and horrible that even during its most desperate time the Axis would not use those weapons again.

@@killer25014 basically the same thing with... was it Hiram Maxim? Or Richard J. Gatling? One of hte two, i think: Created a rapidly firing weapon, expecting that this would reduce the size of armies and make war so burtal it'd be kept short. Instead... WW1.
@killer25014
@killer25014 Год назад
@@undertakernumberone1 Both had their own machine guns; Hiram Maxim, however, was the one who created the world's first truly modern machine gun, the Maxim. Can't say what his intentions were with its creation, since my knowledge of him is a bit desired, but I do know the man was a plain inventor in general. Don't think he put too much thought into the morality of what it might do on the battlefield.

Without fertilizer we could support about 3 billion people. The population is nearing 8 billion. 5 billion is a lot of people alive because of fertilizer. If that makes up for inventing a whole class of WMDs, I think we’ll be debating that until the end of time.
@mladenkorstic
@mladenkorstic 13 дней назад
It does make up for it. Assmerica has done nothing of the sorts for the world and was the creator of nuclear weapons that are the true WMD's, gas you can defend against so if they get a pass so does Haber. See debate nice and short
@okairo
@okairo Год назад
Given the history over this song, despite what he did for farming, people still condemn him. Personally, I see it as a number's game. He's allowed billions of people to live and survive through improving farming. Especially as most scientific inventions utilize human experimentation to an extent, even to this day. (It's more ethical and voluntary nowadays, but human experimentation still exists.) So it'd be invented and use one way or another. Sure, he invented chemical warfare, but his progress in agriculture has outweighed whatever crime he is "guilty" of, especially as we continue to use his method, even to this day. It's hypocritical to condemn the man for his inventions while we actively use them. To me, he did what he needed to for his country and personally instructed how to use the gas for the best effect, which also tells me that while he agreed to it's use, he didn't want the gas to torture the people it killed. Yes, it killed people, but he didn't want it to be a long-term suffering as they died. (Cause I imagine the gas could be mixed to prolong the suffering for many, many hours before death, if they truly wanted to do so) So it tells me that he still had his morality and ethical standpoint to an extent.
@GetDougDimmadomed
@GetDougDimmadomed Год назад
Indeed. if he didn't do it, someone else would have and people would hate them instead. He served his country well, and plenty of people gloss over the part where he saved the human race.

My recommendation for this topic is SABATON - The Attack Of The Dead Men (Official Music Video). The day before releasing this song THIS appeared on RU-vid: Sabaton - The Attack of the Dead Men (Cover на русском | RADIO TAPOK) - It would be great to see you reacting to them in one video maybe 🙂 In the cover you see the fragments of «Атака мертвецов: Осовец» - Короткометражный фильм, which I strongly recommend to see, only 20 min.There are English subtitles there. Yes he helped people but he was ignorant of his creation the day after his wife took her own life he went to the western front and showed the soldiers how to deploy the gas so he infact knew what was happening 1915 was canisters of bromine gas was used on Russian troops followed by Belgium & British troops being gassed also the argument he was innocent hardly I mean he created mustard gas and chlorine gas also then try to make chemical weapons to use as counter attack

I like your props for (I assume) your presentation to go along with your paper. I had something I would have loved to bring as a prop to my presentation for my history capstone presentation, but since my paper was on British arms control initiatives in the late 19th century South African colonies, that would have meant bringing a trapdoor Springfield rifle (contemporary to the Martini-Henry rifle, and useful to demonstrate the technological innovation of the breech-loader), and guns + university is generally a no-no…well, I had to leave it behind.
@Killermcknight
@Killermcknight Год назад
Thanks Matthew, so this wasn't my capstone since my major was in Information Technology I had to basically build an online business for that. The paper was for an English class I had I think English 302 and it wasn't even on Fritz Haber it was on World War 2 and I had a piece in there about chemical warfare that lead to Fritz because you can't talk about chlorine gas without mentioning him. The trapdoor Springfield is awesome just pop the trapdoor and it ejects the old casing reload and shoot. I would have loved to see it. MAKE A RU-vid VIDEO ON IT!
@matthewconner7800
@matthewconner7800 Год назад
@@Killermcknight I’m not much on making RU-vid videos, although I may be the only history major from UNLV to ever cite RU-vid videos as a source in a capstone paper, particularly one that won an award. Specifically, to illustrate the technological advantage that the British enjoyed over the vast majority of the indigenous African groups who mostly had muzzle-loaders, I cited videos from britishmuzzleloaders and from an American channel that demonstrated quick drill with the old Brown Bess, to show the radical increase in rate of fire.

Seeing as we are to many people on the planet, I'm leening towards sinner, if he hadn't invented it population had been kept down. As for the gas, who can say, did he just to his job without reflecting on morality?
@charlessapp1835
@charlessapp1835 Год назад
I think if it would have been me and I had created the gas, I would say that I wish someone else had created it. The fact that he created it was not in it self bad, it was the fact that he seamed to have no remorse. The same can be said for the A-bombs. As horrible as they were, they actually saved Japanese lives because if America/the allies had been forced to invade, many more would have been killed. The study of the victims of radiation helped with other nuclear disasters. When the first nuke was dropped, one of the crew said "My God. What have we done?"
@erikkarlsson861
@erikkarlsson861 6 месяцев назад
While I love the song the hole "moral issue" is kind of dumb for a lack of a better term. Yes the gas sucked but if you look at the statistics of the casualties the ones being killed by gas is hulariously small in compereson to how they make it sound in the song. Artillery killed most by far and on a distant 2nd place you got the machineguns.. Considering that and how much his invention did for food production this one is a no-brainer for me. But what do I know, to each their own!

I personally don't think morality of actions can be balanced out with math. His creation of chemical warfare is a horrible use of science that can't be undone by numbers.
