You are welcome mate. There are many lengthy gaming benchmarks with the 8600k@5Ghz, with big cpu loads in many of them, like AC:O. It was stable in Prime95 up to one hour, but then stopped it, since no game puts such loads on the cpu anyway.

Nice video I'm getting the same motherboard with 8700K and 4266 mhz ram soon. Isn't VCCIO and VCCSA a bit high at default ? Heard that it should be VCCIO 1.1 and VCCSA 1.15 especially if you are running high speed ram.
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
I guess Asrock may be using a bit higher voltages to keep the faster ram kits stable. I am sure they wouldn't use settings that would be dangerous for the memory controller and the system agent. However some better fine tuning may be possible depending on the quality of the cpu and the ram.

I see that you made a post regarding AVX, but I cannot find it here. Did you delete it? Did you resolve the problem?
@club4ghz

Yes i solved after googling it. Had to disable multi core enhancements before changing cpu ratio. Got cpu at 4.7 ghz 1.25v all core. 4200 mhz ram. 4400 mhz XMP wanted to increase BCLK to post. It's a bit toasty already 60 -70c in AC Origins but hell it perform like a beast in Alexandria. Funny thing is when i had ram at stock speeds it ran shittier than my 4770K.

Hi, thanks a lot for the video! I have a question regarding my OC settings after following also your comments: All core 48, cpu cache ratio 44, long duration 120, short duration 150, offset voltage 20, llc level 1. With this settings I get max temperature of 80ºC and max VID voltage of 1.245v after 1 hour of Prime95 (small FFTs) and 30 min of Realbench stress test. It is stable while gaming and I do not see WHEA errors. Would you consider this OC stable for 24/7 operation, or you would do something else? THANKS!!

Sounds pretty good to me, however as I keep saying, the 8600k is very powerful as it is. I mean I just use multicore enhancement and be done with it. I only OCed to do some benchmarks for my hobbyist channel. You could try 10mV to see if it's stable if you have a really good cpu, but it sounds great as it is already.

hey dude are there any negative long term effects of having the cpu at a radically overclocked speed like this? i have your same mother board and cpu and id' like to push it to about 4.5 to get some more juice out of it, but im really scared because i have a cooler master evo 212 and i really really dont know what im doing when it comes to this.
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
The cooler master evo 212 is a decent cooler but not high performance. Why don't you just enable multicore enhancement, which will keep the cpu at 4.3Ghz all core turbo and call it a day? In any case, if you want to go that road, trial and error is what you should do. There is no other way since each system is different. I have never had a cpu die on me, if that's what you are asking. However, as I always say, overclocking requires the owner to take some wilful risks.

Already went to default and then did the exact same thing you told me in this guide. Doesn't function for me. What I see now is that my voltage configuration (on default) is almost completely different than yours. Vccio on 0,95v, vccst on 1v, vccsa on 1,2 and vccpll on 1.2. Can this be the reason ? Or are there other factors ? Like ok I can lose the silicon lottery but it can't be like the worst cpu ever produced right?

Thanks for your video btw really great channel.
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 5 лет назад
Τηε 8700k boosts at 4.7Ghz for low loads, but if you want 4.5Ghz constant at heavy loads, then set the multiplier at 45, the offset at +10mV and start with LLC1 and see if it's stable. You can then try LLC2,3 etc or even auto. Lots of combinations could be stable. As I say about Prime95, test your favorite apps instead. Very few real life operations will put such burden on a cpu.

@toutagamon Год назад
Safe is a big word mate. You are overclocking and overvolting, therefore you are running the cpu out of spec. You are willingly taking a risk. We all do. Yes it will not blow up (probably lol) but you are putting it under more stress than the manufacturer intended. However yes, there is some leeway built into it. That being said, the 9700k is 8core and may need more voltage. Try and see. Why do you need to overclock this powerful cpu though? I gather it has a very high boost by itself. Maybe just enable multicore enhancement and be done with it?

What wattage of the PSU is needed for OC like this? I have 8600K and want to go at least 4.8Ghz but my PSU is only 600 or 650W, I need to buy new more powerful PSU? Because when I tried this settings PC didn't want to boot up, it was freezing on the windows logo after bios
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 3 года назад
For booting windows, your psu wouldn't be a problem, unless the psu is damaged. Booting windows requires a little wattage. Now for gaming the cpu could draw around 100W. For other apps, maybe even more. If it froze on windows boot, it means you need to check and/or change your settings. Not all systems are the same, although I'd bet all 8600ks should be able to boot windows with these settings. Make sure you have everything right.
@physx1
@physx1 3 года назад
@@toutagamon I think the crash at boot is caused by something I saw/heard in other yt video - some XMP RAM profiles cause such crashes, when I set XMP RAM Profile on auto everything works even with core enhancement, when on XMP profile 1 - windows don't boot. BIOS always shows 3600mhz on my DDR4 RAM, doesn't matter if it is on auto or xmp, so I just use default setting

Ok I see now. The only thing I can think of, is that the system does not accept your overclock and reverts to standard speed when you restart. Bioses can do that to keep the system from damage. That would mean that you have done something seriously wrong though.

@toutagamon
@toutagamon 5 лет назад
Glad you got some help from this. Now regarding the 5Ghz clock, the cpu should not stay at 5Ghz indefinitely. At idle, it should drop clocks, if the intel power saving settings have not been tampered with. Do you use cpuz to monitor clocks? Leave the system at idle and see how clocks behave. Also open task manager and see if there's any cpu load, forcing the cpu to increase clocks.Also see what kind of power profile you use in windows. There's really no need to keep the cpu overclocked all the time however. It's fast enough as it is.
@ktember6526
@ktember6526 5 лет назад
I am using CPUZ and HWMonitor. Task manager shows 2% CPU utilization but still kicking at 5 GHz and VCore at 1.424. Working my way through the stuff you wrote - my PC power setting were on High Performance. I switched it to Balanced and there, it drops the clock speed but its very variable fluctuating between 800MHz to 5GHz. Is this normal?
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 5 лет назад
Yes that's what you want. The cpu will increase clocks when the load requires so. Try running some benchmarks and you will see it going to 5Ghz and staying there, while the benchmark runs its cpu load test. 1.424 is too much though. Try lowering it and see if it remains stable.

@@ktember6526 You should either set a lower than 1.3V voltage, or set the cpu core/cache voltage to offset mode, and use +30mV there. Like I show at 6:28. I use +50mV in the video but later I found it was stable with 30mV as well.

@toutagamon
@toutagamon 5 лет назад
Well I had done a Prime95 test at 5GHz to see what kind of power draw the cpu would have and it showed 120W. images2.imgbox.com/62/f6/lelEmiZr_o.png From all my gaming tests 120W for long duration seemed to be ok. Maybe your cpu needs a more relaxed wattage. How about other tests? Does it go up to 5Ghz? Maybe some other setting is inhibiting your clock? Like AVX offset or something? I don't know about frying. I mean cpus do have internal protection mechanisms. I have a 200W cooler anyway, but I saw no reason going crazy with the limits, especially since I am focusing on gaming cpu loads. Very difficult to put such strain on the cpu. In my AC:O benchmark, which had the cpu at almost max load, the 120W limit had no problem whatsoever. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xkmQtlwZsZQ.html

So i followed these instructions to over clock my set up its pretty much the exact same as yours a side from different ram and maybe a different gpu every thing had seemed to go smoothly. I didn't have any instability as far as i could tell and the temps seemed to stay pretty low around 70-80ish although i didn't really stress test it i don't think maybe some brief gaming. I left it that way for a day or 2 and decided to put it in a case, upon putting it in the case i powered it on the screen came on for a second it might have gotten to windows then it crashed. Now every time i turn it on the mobo comes on for a few seconds it gives no display on the gpu port or the mobo port and after a little bit the psu cuts power and trys to restart. I thought that i had fried my mobo with static because it happened right after i put it in the case, but i ordered a new one and i installed it and every thing and im getting the same problem. I have been building computers for years but don't over clock that much and i have pretty much tested every part, does this sound like i fried my cpu?

Well you can't possibly fry the cpu with +50mV. If it did fry, it must have been faulty from the get go anyway. Have you tried with a different PSU however. It sounds mostly as a mobo or a PSU, than the cpu to be frank. I suppose you have reset the bios right?
@buddymoon94
@buddymoon94 6 лет назад
Thanks for letting me know the mV bump shouldn't be enough to fry the chip, i didn't think your OC was to aggressive but i wasn't sure, I tried to reset the bios with a few different methods i tried unplugging it and taking out the cmos battery for 24 hours, i also unplugged it and shorted the cmos reset jumper for 3 seconds as per the mother board instruction manuals, but when i power the mother board on it still rotates the colors on the leds which tells me its some how still remembering settings, because it was original just 1 color. The motherboard i am working on now is however a new mother board same model and i am still getting the same symptoms. As far as the PSU goes i used a tester on it to confirm its operating correctly and also tried a different PSU, the only thing i have not checked is the ram. Thing is the symptoms it exbits are the exact same symptoms i get when i straight up pull the ram and try and power it on, i am wondering if my ram could be cooked or bad, could the xmp OC have messed things up? I have never overclocked ram.
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Well unplugging the battery should be enough by itself. The RGB function not resetting is weird indeed, but it's the first time I have had an RGB mobo and I am not sure how that works. Maybe it stores those settings differently. It is however eyebrow raising for sure. The xmp should cause any trouble for the ram sticks either. That's not really overclocking. It's considered standard for what the ram sticks can do. It may be out of jedec spec, but it has always been like that. This is a really weird situation you got there buddy. Maybe take it to the store, since they have plenty of hardware to crosscheck and figure out wtf is wrong. Are you hearing any beeping sounds when the system turns on?

I don't have a speaker at the moment i just ordered one on ebay its weird this board is supposed to have an led code indicator but i don't see it lightning up, I've got one more option i'm gonna try some different ram and see what happens.

So i just wanted to update this and say that i finally got a new cpu to test with and was able to determine that the cpu was the problem. Whether or not that was the result of improper chip manufacturing, the use of these settings or a combination of the 2, i am not sure. So i'm not trying to talk shit but just wanted to let every one know what happened so that anyone who wants to avoid this happening can.

I had followed this guide and all goes ok @toutagamon but I want to know why do you use an offset and not a fixed mode? and wht you didn't use avx to -2 ? Thanks
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Offset is just a personal preference, coming from older intel systems that worked better with that. I also consider it a less strict voltage option, which the system can use to set the voltage where it needs at any given moment. Offset is a guide if you will, not a strict number. The 8600K is cool enough to cope with no AVX2 speed reduction. Also from my testing, I saw some games dropping clocks with any negative AVX2 setting.

Yes you can try that, but for 5Ghz I think it will be difficult. I have settled for 30mV for 5Ghz now, but with level 1 llc. I keep the system at stock 99% of the time anyway though. I only OC for my benchmarks. The 8600k is pretty powerful as it is.

@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Normally XMP sets the correct settings the RAM needs in order to operate correctly. Voltage included. If you have doubts whether it's the cpu causing the problem or the ram, you should test them separately. Meaning, set the cpu at stock and the ram at XMP clocks and see if the system is stable. Then overclock the cpu and set the ram at normal speeds, non XMP that is, and again see how the system behaves. Keep in mind that not all systems are the same however. I am just showing the settings that need to be changed here. Some systems may need more aggressive or more relaxed changes, depending on the quality of the dies.

Here is my Ashes of the Singularity result for 5Ghz. You will see that the average cpu framerate for DX12 High at 130fps is not bad at all. images2.imgbox.com/6a/56/cSocrJ1R_o.png Also this is a shot while the benchmark was running. As you can see the power is not even nearing the short 150W limit I have imposed. images2.imgbox.com/d5/89/Rn4XvheU_o.png In any case, people are welcome to try higher values. I prefer safer ones.

I have a question for you, I also have the i5-8600k but I’m using the AsRock z370 Fatal1ty K6 gaming motherboard. Also my Ram is 4x4gb G.Skill RipJaws 4 Series 3200’s and I’m not sure if this matters but I’m using the Gtx 980TI which I know it draws more voltages than some of the newer released cards (1060,1070,1080, and etc.) But my question is my computer boots beautifully with these settings and I’m just playing CS:GO since I just finished the rig and haven’t got to test other games. But when it comes time to shut down my system it shuts off the monitor but it displays “04” on the debug reader on the motherboard and doesn’t turn off unless I manually do it. I’m assuming I need to change my offset voltage or make it a fixed voltage since when I change it to let’s say 1.315v fixed it boots and shuts off normally. I just wanted your experienced advice on why this might be happening, and if I should keep dropping my volts until I see the 04 display on the debug and then I’ll know how low I can go without failure to shut down? Great video btw
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Hey Jared. Thanks for your kind words. Error 04 should be related to memory issues according to this. www.asrock.com/support/faq.asp?id=334 I would suggest you try running only the two modules on A2/B2 to see if the problem persists. The 980Ti may be more power consuming but it would only affect the system if you have a bad 12V rail in your PSU. You would certainly see some instant power offs, crashes or BSODs if that was the case however. Even so, since you have a coffeelake system, you can take it out and run the system with the on board gpu to see what's going on. Do you really need OC for CS:GO however? I thought this was a light game? Regardless, you should indeed troubleshoot this.
@jaredkish992
@jaredkish992 6 лет назад
toutagamon yes cs:go is an extremely light game. But I do plan on downloading battlefield, grand theft auto, Witcher, and a few other games that I know demand a lot more from my PC. And if I can hit 5ghz stable then why not lol like you said before “no game is going to need your pc at 5ghz, but I don’t see why not if you can achieve it lol” so that’s why I’m coming to you for these questions. And I also read that it is a ram issue if it’s showing 04. But I have all my slots taken up on my MB and it’s reading all 16gb. I was thinking maybe I need to overclock my dram voltage a little?? It says in OC Tweaker my standard is at 1.36 and I was thinking of changing it to 1.4? These are DDR4 G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series 3200’s. So I didn’t get cheap ram... as for my PSU I use a 650 EVGA Supernova G3 gold 80 plus

Just out of curiocity, why did you get 4x4 instead of 2x8? 4 dimms are always harder for the memory controller, especially for cpus designed with dual channel in memory. I mean I would understand it for say 64GBs but for 16? In any case, you may still had the same problem with 2x8 anyway, so don't worry too much about it. 1.4V sounds a bit much however. I only increased 0.01V on my Ripjaws in order to tighten the timings from CL15 to CL14. Memory controllers have been known to be sensitive with RAM voltage in the past and I am not sure what the consensus is for the Coffelakes. Normally it shouldn't do that when the cpu is overclocked. I mean if at stock cpu the ram works OK, why would it have a problem when the system is overclocked? It doesn't make sense tbh. Especially with the offset voltage and not the fixed one. Also exactly this part, that the fixed voltage works, should steer things away from memory, even if the error code suggests so. I think you may have hit a very weird jackpot of errors. Make sure you are using the latest BIOS and contact Asrock for a suggestion. Maybe they need to tweak something for your RAM. Also out of curiosity see if you can ran the system at stock clocks with the offset voltage setting and observe how the error behaves. Can you upload some pics so I can see the exact settings you are using?
@jaredkish992
@jaredkish992 6 лет назад
toutagamon honestly I went with the 4x4gb ddr4 G.Skill Ripjaws because of how they were rated on the ram.userbench mark. They were rated like top 10 for gaming speed so I went with those instead of 2x8gb. With that being said I’m still within my 30 days of returning them and getting 2x8gb ram sticks if you think that is the problem that I am running into. And I actually did have a flash update available for my motherboard and I just ran it. I’m going to put your exact settings in again and I’ll take pictures or post videos on my account so you can see if I’m doing something wrong.

@toutagamon
@toutagamon 4 года назад
The z370 pro4 is a lower grade motherboard, compared to the Extreme 4. There are significant differences in their VRM, which is responsible for the stability of the cpu. However that does not mean that high overclocks are out of the question. There is always the matter of the silicon lottery, meaning your chip may not be such a good overclocker. Did you use the exact same settings? Maybe it needs a little more voltage? Don't overdo it though. I am not familiar with the pro4's bios, so I cannot really tell you what to look for.
@PrimeRsoul
@PrimeRsoul 4 года назад
@@toutagamon Actually, you were spot on with your remark about the VRM of the Pro 4. It is the limiting factor in this case. I had it briefly but after maxing out at 4.8 (and not even stable) on the 8600k I exchanged it for the Extreme 4. I hit 5.2 on the same CPU now and the only reason to turn it down to 5.1 was because I don't like my system becoming too noisy. I use different settings from yours though, and it may be worth noting that I was only able to get beyond 5.1 after delidding the CPU to replace the thermal compound with liquid metal. Under heavy load my system now always stays below 70c and relatively quiet.

I have this motherboard with an 8700k. When I try to overclock it, and then run prime 95 26.6 it runs fine for a couple of minutes and then the multiplier starts to reduce itself, resulting in lower core speed. As far as I know 26.6 doesn't use AVX, so AVX offset shouldn't be an issue. I tried windows 10 powerplan on performance, no difference. And its not overheating, mid 60c, delidded and x62 cooler. Any thoughts what could be causing this?
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
It's probably your power limits. The 8700k will need more than I use in this video, due to hyperthreading and increased power requirements. As I have said before however, a user should check his overclocking for his intended use. I mean if you want 5Ghz for gaming (really not needed anyway), test your overclock in heavy games. Ie BF1 multiplayer, Assassins Creed Origins, Ashes of the Singularity benchmarks and a few runs of 3dmark. If it's ok there, no crashes, no overheating, no clock reduction, then you are good to go.

@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
No problem mate. A rough estimation would be to increase them by 25%, since that's how much more hyperthreading consumes and performs. Actually I am not sure if you even set it to unlimited, it would cause any problems. That is if your voltage and/or offset are reasonable. Also you can download the intel power gadget and see up to what power draw your cpu climbs to, depending on load.

This worked fine, and passed all stress tests np. But When I try to play Pubg, it just keeps crashing, making my whole game freeze. Tips ?
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
It's weird to pass stress tests and crashing in games. Unfortunately I don't have pubg to test if there's some weirdness going on. Try fine tuning your voltages or lowering your clocks.

Not really, ofcourse PUBG sometimes crashes, but in this scenario my WHOLE computer froze and I had to shut it down manually
@hitsubitsa5039
@hitsubitsa5039 6 лет назад
kiomio10 PUBG is notorious for being an unfinished game. It doesn't make sense that your CPU will be fine through stress testing and not a game. I would verify the game files through steam to start off.

I have a AsRock Z270 mb and I have the ram in A1 and B1, should it be in A2 and B2? And why?
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
I don't know about z270 mate. You should check your manual. In my case, with the RAM in A1/B1 I could get even close to the 3200Mhz rating of the ram. Any attempt above 2400 would bring a crash. With terrible timings too. At A2/B2 everything is fine.

I tried to overclock my i7 8700k (with same board as you) to 4.8ghz on all cores and voltage and offset voltage to 10. I have a noctua d15 CPU cooler and i ran a test on prime95 and temperatures was hitting 100 degress. any idea whats going on? I ran prime95 on stock settings and CPU temp at 80 degrees. Thanks. Nice video btw !

Hyperthreading generally heats up cpus a lot. It comes with a performance advantage of course, but since I care mostly about games and game benchmarking, I went with the 8600k. The 2500k has served me well since 2011, so I am ok with no HT. Try turning HT off for testing and you will see quite the difference. Also Prime95 is the heaviest test out there. No gaming workload will ever be that high. I was getting around 75C at 5Ghz on Prime95.
@tupchurch
@tupchurch 6 лет назад
That's a little bit ridiculous. Your cooler is offset or fan isn't spinning fast enough. If those are ok, there may be a defect in your system.
@digitalfruitcake24
@digitalfruitcake24 6 лет назад
That's just how hot the 8700K gets when overclocked. Look into delidding like many others are if you want to alleviate some of the temperature issues that chip has

@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Below 60C for gaming benchmarks @5Ghz, around 70-75C for 100% in encodings and other very heavy loads. At stock they are below 50C for gaming and around 60C for max load. I show the temps in all my benchmarking videos, in MSI Afterburner at the end of the video. Each game is different.

Hey, i have a question. What is the diffrence between Asrock z370 Extreme 4 and ASRock Z370 Pro4. My english is not so good sry ^^
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Hello. The Pro4 has fewer sata ports, fewer usb ports, a lesser vrm and a lesser audio chip. Oh and no SLI support. Certainly not bad for the price. I mean it's like 40 euros cheaper. Still since I build a system for a long time, I prefer the better but still middle option, which is the Extreme 4. Ok there's also the Taichi which is even better that both, but the lines are getting even more blurry on the top tier.

Only if you don't want all cores to run at 4.3Ghz. Mutlicore enhancement is just a better stock speed. Also when you set manual multipliers, it is disabled anyway.

Αναμεσα σε αυτή και την gaming m5 τι πιστεύεις;
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад

Why my default CPU voltage for my i5-8600k is 1.08 volts ? With or without prime... I get random freezes also. I had to put it manually Level3 and +50mv to get 1.2 volts at stock speeds
@toutagamon
@toutagamon 6 лет назад
Mine shows 0.592V at idle and 1.184V at load with multicore enhancement. You most certainly don't need +50mV for stock operation. Check your settings or reset your BIOS. Something else is at fault here.
@ngt84
@ngt84 6 лет назад
Ok thanks. I just put level1 LLC, and i get now 1.2volts at CPU-z with no +50mv... the VID on coretemp is 1.25 on all stock CPU settings. So i guess it depends what Level LLC you choose and you get the apropriate amount of real voltage on your CPU. But i dont think the stock Level5 LLC and 1.05 volts can hold up turbo boost speeds of 4.2-4.3ghz... Oh also my problem for the random freezes was one stick of my Corsair DDR4 RAM, did a memtest. Now i removed the problematic stick....
