That intro had me tearing up before the song even started. This whole performance is as heartbreaking as it is beautiful. They are two men on that stage who have lost their dads and the support James Blunt offers Iam is so genuine. Even though James' father lived I truly believe that both their fathers were on the stage that night.

I commend iam's grace and strength through this performance. i dont blame him for crying mid performance, because he's still a 18 year old kid who's grieving for his dad. its bigger than american idol. he's putting his story and heart out there to the millions, congrats iam, well deserved
There were several things that worked against Iam keeping his composure. - In his previous singing of "Monsters", Iam had to prep himself/drum up his self-control before starting to sing the song. This time, he had no choice on when to start, he was singing a duet. He was singing on cue. Ready-set-go. - In his previous renditions of this song, Iam had the security blanket of his father's guitar to blanket him and to bolster his confidence. This time, he was singing naked. - This time he was singing a duet. He didn't have the lyrics of the song to keep driving him to the next note. He had to start and stop. Stopping was easy, starting up again was very hard. - Most importantly, he was singing with James Blunt. James' emotions poured through his voice, they were overwhelming.
Yep. He said he listened to the song with his Dad a lot and sang it for him. To meet the person who actually wrote the song that helped him is overwhelming and he was grieving right in front of all of us..

It was well known before Iam sang it. You will reactions from a year aho on it all over the place. The beauty of Idol is singing artists song so those we didn't before will know/introducing ppl to music they never heard before. Either way, this was healing for everyone and am glad this song is helping millions of people all over the world..

The day after Iam auditioned, James Blunt's manager got in touch with him and asked him if he knew his song was #1 on ITunes. That's when James Blunt saw Iam's audition and realized that Iam had taken his song to new heights.
I can honestly say before I watched Iam for the first timw his audition, I did not know James Blunt. But after he performed I started listening to James Blunt music. Thanks Iam for your beautiful talent. You make all of us Polynesian proud of you especially your family. Your dad is so so proud of you👏👏👏
awesome reaction, I got to thinking, that God had a plan and Iam Tongi never would have won if his father didnt pass away and God took Him to glory. That event prompted Iam to audition with 'monsters" with all of the emotion and it highlited Iam's amazing talent in guitar playing and vocals. and that audition catapulted Iam to National fame, and made him a local Hawaaian hero. Iam then gets to sing a duet with James Blunt who wrote the song and it becomes one of the most moving duets ever. Iam actually made James Blunts song exponentially more famous. Of Course Iam rides this amazing wave of events and momentum to deliver one awesome performance after another and is not the winner of American Idol. God is indeed good
Jelly was in Joe Rogan a couple days before and he talked about how he admired Iam. He cried with Joe while watching Iam on the show, so this doesn’t surprise me that he was sitting by his mom.
