Ian Hunter BBC Breakfast interview broadcast live 11 October 2012 , on the eve of his Rant Band Touer on back of new When I'm President. Sounds as jet lagged as he says he is!
Everybody's got their favorite "cult" band/singer. You know, those that aren't the Beatles, the Stones, Kanye, whoever...Ian Hunter has been my guy for on 50 years. Through the highs and lows -mine and his - his words and music go to the very center of my Rock&Roll soul! Rock on all!😎😁😎
It's great that he still speaks like he just got off the bus from Oswestry despite decades in the US! Never done a duff record yet, and some real corkers like "You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic"
I loved the way that he said fans would nick a bike or a car to get to their next gig. My musical tastes go toward prog but I always considered Mott the Hoople my working man's band.
Known for being a proper rocker, but he was also an excellent balladeer. That "The Hoople" LP was one of their best, imo. IH is currently 84 years young
Had the great privilege of 150 people personnel concert in a small place in Capistrano Calif ,small personnel and unforgettable,,I grew up top hats and coats long hair rockinrollers, thanks Ian for the music,,jammed on American alien boy just today,,,the your music is timeless, thanks again,,,61 and still rocking California kid!
Just seeing this in 2021. They were not scruffy. They were super cool. Also David Bowie was a friend of theirs and a Mott the Hoople FAN. Interesting how the British interviewers unfortunately feel the need to be snide...And they did not break up. Hunter left to form HunterRonson band and the band continued as Mott/British Lions...No one will remember these two. Everyone will remember Mott the Hoople. Rest in Peace Dale and Pete. Rock on Ian Hunter.
Always and still... a class act, damn, and this was 2012? Well, Connetticut has some beautiful country, and I bet Mr. Ian has found him a pretty sweet spot too, you know they always talk about bowie and the ATYDudes cut, yet that lp is loaded with cuts that are way equal to if not better, but the tactful man whos music ive come to love remaims quietly modest while putting up with stupid young people's erroneous comments, just a really down to earth man that...."Loves American music",...hes got to be near 80 now, and I sure do hope and pray that he and all his family are doing well, thanks for the post, greetings from Jacksonville, FLA. !
Also John Lydon always cites Mott the Hoople as a major influence on Sex Pistols but Ian did play up to it for a time saying they released the first punk album years before punk and the New York Dolls cited Brain Capers as a major influence and so the link with punk was born.
I'm not surprised Bowie offered Suffragette city because it sounded too close to Under my wheels by Alice Cooper, Bowie always hated being compared to Cooper; probably because his "Ziggy" character and band were obviously influenced by the Alice Cooper group.
