What about the wonder pass to assist with the goal - first touch, with the outside of the foot from an awkward body angle which made the original swing look almost like a flick to a nearby teammate but instead the ball flew about 40-50 yards up in the air! Why is it that the passers, the ones that create the chances for the goal scorers don't get the same level of recognition?
The greatest goal scorer of his generation. Jimmy greaves was past his prime, when i started watching football in the early 70s, so imo ian rush is the greatest BRITISH goalscorer ive seen in my lifetime amd i am NOT a liverpool fan or welsh.
@@MrClean3381 during the premier league era, i e, the last 30 years, alan shearer and thierry henry r the best 2 strikers, forwards, call it what u like, ive seen in that time. As an out and out goalscorer, predator, sniffer, call it what u like, ian rush is the best ive ever seen. He was lethal in front of goal, in that he hardly missed an opportunity.
@@MrClean3381 Shearer is overrated. Sucked with the national team, and as far as club performance he was poor except one good season with Blackburn when he scored some crucial goals. When it came to Ian Rush the goals had some significance on top of the quality.
@@XerxesGammon200 nah you wrong dude. He the leading goal scorer of all time in premier league for a reason. You are a bit better than overrated to get to that standard. And I ain’t a geordie or England fan
The best goal I ever seen Ian Rush score was in 1987 at Anfield against Oxford Utd I think we won 4-0. Rush jumped so high to head it into the back of the net from a cross Kop end its was unbelievable Rush rouse up like he had wings. Its was never televised.
Ian Rush didn't look ANYTHING like a professional footballer. Gangly, round shouldered, no upper body. But that was UNTIL he got on a football pitch. Incredible pace, could hold the ball, tackle like a top defender, worked hard. In later years he was also able to playmake like Dalglish. Most of all... he had a similar quality of 2 foot finishing to pretty much any player ever. Strangely tho he couldn't really head the ball. Phenomenal player. I think he'd get near enough a goal a game these days.
Exactly this. Phenomenal in all those ways you describe but some of his attempts at headers were shocking! He was dirty, too. Especially when he got older. Seen him leave his foot in quite nastily a few times. One of the greats.
I was sat in the Liverpool end that day and there were United all over the ground. Tickets had gone on general sale during the week and we'd gone up and told them that our accents were not in fact Mancunian, but Cheshire, and we were all big Liverpool fans who didn't normally get the chance to go to Anfield. 🙂
Robbie and Rushie and Luis were prob the best all round finishers I'd ever seen. Better than Ronaldo and Mbappe in finishing I would say. Similar to Messi perhaps. Robbie and Rushie were substantially ahead of Salah as a finisher.
Rush arrived in Italy to play for juventus with a huge reputation. He barely could get the ball and i remember he had some really embarassing moments. I think he stayed one season before deciding to go back in premier league.
I loved this era of footy. No egos no simulation no waving of imaginary cards. There were a few great finishers about. Clive Allen, Graham Sharpe, Brian McClaire, I'll put Andy Gray in cuz I'm a Villa fan. But Rush was hands down the best finisher by a mile. Wasn't the biggest but was great with his head as well. Great Days.
Great goal from the legendary Rushsie…But this sadly of cource was when the great Liverpool team of the 1980s was now at the end…Partly also thanks to souness f**king up too….And that Manchester United under alex ferguson were now the rising force of english football
That is true Souness has admitted to making mistakes but, what’s not mentioned is the ageing squad and players like Staunton and Burrows… Souness had to deal with 🤦
@@jagjitsinghmanku2283 yes I'm a City fan unfortunately you did they won their first league title in 26 years. And hit the success button just at the right time when all the money started coming into football. MCFC
@@craigmullen9046 City fans had to watch LFC dominate in the 1970s and 80s then it was United in the 1990s and 2000s and now it’s Manchester City‘s turn to dominate.
@@craigmullen9046 You lot talking about money coming into football?!?!?! Do me a favour. Anything you ever win will always have an asterix next to it and you know it.
No this was Ian Rush's 3rd goal for Liverpool against United. His first goal was in the penultimate game of the 1991-92 season in a 2-0 win. Then he scored at Old Trafford in a 2-2 draw in the 1992-93 season, before his thunderous goal for Liverpool against United at Anfield
I must be missing something. I get that Rush is a legend but that is not a wonder goal. Neil Maupay scored a half volley this weekend in the premier league that had superior technique and he probably won't even win goal of the month.
