I watch this at least once a month. He was and STILL is the best finisher. How many of goals were from absolutely nothing? A hopeful ball over the top maybe and he scampers onto it with strength and pace and balance, ball glued to his feet. Just unreal player and does not even get close to the credit he deserves as up there with the greats. People say players like Raul are legends, and they definitely are. But WRight is much better!
Dont think racism, just a pratt of an England manager playing him out of position as a winger???!!! He was golden boot prem top scorer playing out wide !!! God rest his soul but Graham Taylor was a plum
Blatantly racism sherringham owen got in ahead of him same as Andy Cole didn't even qualify for the world cup all black players didn't come out of youth they had to work their way up & move into big teams too
the reason why i supported Arsenal, the guy brought happiness and joy in my life when times were really hard for me and my family. one of the greatest players ever, an arsenal legend Ian Wright Wright Wright.
Hence the reason why he holds the most goals. No need to bang it into the net with all the power you have, simple thinking and and owed to hsi teacher who taught him to think before finishing it off... legendary stuff, absolute legend of a player.
Name one Englishman that made a big career outside England ...even Beckham wasnt that epic player the problem is that u dont have someone like messi Ronaldo buffon xavi etc
been a long while since arsenal had a great poacher. great skills, never put more strength in his finish but always just enough to squirm past the keeper n his passion for the game is doubtless
People under-estimate Wright. He's up there with the very best. It's a travesty that he never got more England caps. Idiots like Graham Taylor are to blame for that. England went into a slump between 90 and 96, and Wright could have been the one to stop it happening.
Class act a genius not just his finishing but his touch...timing football brain his volley...and acceleration when he smell blood he makes it rain...and also his positioning....even with the racism then trying to block is shine especially Terry vennable I hope I got his name spelling wrong because he was most definitely racist ...still couldn't stop his shine...ledend ...legend
Makes you wonder how he doesn't have more England caps. I mean how iwere 4 other strikers being picked ahead of him?? I can only assume maybe he didn't get along with the squad or some thing (bit that's a total guess) because talent wise he should have been one of the first names on the team sheet
I'm just guessing but there was a load of good english strikers back then, I remember andy cole was on fire, then there was owen aswell who from an early age kind of became the main striker. I'm scottish though so what would I know about the english national team :p
The chip against Swindon at 1.13 is still the best I've ever seen. The keeper was barely off his line. If I remember rightly, Arsenal were already about 4 - 0 up so I guess he thought he would show off and give it a try. Ridiculous skill.
Fuck me I knew he was class but didn't know he was that fucking good! I was too young to remember him, I was born when he was in his prime which was the mid 90's but did watch Bergkamp and Henry but fuuuuuuck if Wrighty was playing now he would be playing for Madrid and Bayern etc, some of these goals I haven't seen ever. What a finisher.
Kal Kuma haha yh you're right maybe I should've phrased it differently. "If Wrighty was playing now he would've been WANTED by Bayern and Madrid". No doubt he would've stayed at The Arsenal anyways, he loves the club that much
He was world class at the time. Unfortunately for many seasons he didnt have quality players around him at Arsenal. The saying was "if Wright didnt score Arsenal didnt score".
I'm italian (Huge Juventus Supporter). Now i'm 35 and still have a light blue and dark blue JVC shirt i bought in 96 in my first trip to UK, just because he was my favourite player!!!
Imagine how much cash you'd have to part with to buy wrighty now?! Imagine being him and going from pub football to lifting silverware in the blink of an eye! And, has anyone ever lobbed more keepers in the history of mankind?? The salmon header off the back of his head into the opposite corner isn't humanly possible. Every time I see him on tv now he just makes me laugh. That naughty yoot is never leaving him for sure. An absolute legend in my eyes.
He was never ever given the credit he deserved. One of the coolest finishers to ever live along with players like Inzaghi, van Nistelrooy & Klose. But then again he played for Arsenal so I'm not surprised when the media hate Arsenal
Yeah I don't know what beef the media have with Arsenal; they're always against everything they stand for. Especially Arsene Wenger who the whole of Africa look up to. They always support Tottenham who haven't won a trophy since God knows when
Everyone likes to think their club legends were the best at something - but Wright really is a credible shout for best PURE finisher of all time. During most of his career Arsenal were ideologically opposed to chances for either team. Every week was a grim physical war with no opportunities at all, and every week he would score from a single quarter of a chance. 1-0 to the Arsenal. Tap-ins, Headers, Volleys, 1v1s, Rockets, Lobs, Solos, every type of improvised finish under the sun, and all done with a kind of...glee.
I see a lot of Henry in Wright. I definitely imagine Henry watched many videos of him while at arsenal to transition from the winger position he was playing in previous teams to the striker, legendary top class striker he became.
One of the best strikers to grace the English game, was always shafted and underrated because he played for the most hated club in England, far better than Shearer and all the other chumps who started for England around that period. Shearer was a yes man, that's what the corrupt FA like, Wright was outspoken and didn't hesitate to speak his mind and they didn't like that.
Tom Skinner Ian wrights time with England should have been France 98. Absolutely gutted he got injured on the eve of that tournament. What MIGHT have been with Ian Wright in the team/squad.
Tom Skinner Still can’t understand how Ian Wright won the golden boot in the 91/92 season and he got left at home for Euro 92 by Graham Taylor who took Alan Smith who was not starting at Arsenal and also Alan Shearer...No other country in the world would leave their top scorer at home.
I am so pleased things have worked out well for Ian Wright, he fully deserves his reputation as a pundit. His chips alone make fantastic viewing. How many players have that control at pace? From his era he stands out as peerless.
he was top drawer, and we would have pissed the league this season if he was in our team, walcott? 10 years and £140k a week? could not even come close to filling wrightys boots.
No judging m8, i'm a Gooner too, and i actually hardly, but still agree that he is even a better finisher than Henry. Thierry is my favourite Arsenal player that has ever worn our jersey but still, Wright was an unbeliavable finisher.
Imagine Giroud or Welbeck trying this stuff. It seems that Wright and Henry didnt play nearly as much with their back to goal. I can imagine Walcott doing this with some of recent finishing before his injuries. #Walcottthroughthemiddle
The fact of the matter is that real strikers are so comfortable in front of the goal they put the ball away with ease...a tap, a lob, a touch either way the ball goes in the net with little effort.
An Arsenal man through and through.A scorer of wonderful goals and always into something. The joy he brought to my life with his goals and humour 👌 Take a bow Ian Wright you were fantastic for Arsenal.Top top bloke.Should have retired number 8 after him ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First of all tf does a POSITIVE statement about giroud have to do about being an spurs fan?? Seriously like i can appreciate a valid argument but u might just be the stupidest person alive let alone a football fan . And if you judge one player's quality because of one game then we all might as well call every footballer that ever lived on earth shit. I can guarantee you that everyone has a bad game or drops form occasionally let alone professional footballers. Giroud mightve had the most shit game hes ever had against monaco but that doesnt change the fact that giroud was only 6 goals short of sanchez this season and thats with an injury that put him away for a few months. Now go back to fifa for the sake of all gooners
er no it's not 1 game it's been 3 years, when's the last time giroud show up and score a hat trick against a team in the top 4. Henry said ars can't win the prem with giroud enough said and I bet he know more about football than you. You must be Ty's deluded son, turn off ur pc and go back to school ffs. ppl like you who are content with mediocrity should fuck off and go back to spurs ok?
I still believed there 12 minutes Henry was the best finisher in the history of Arsenal in good french ... on what we see on this video is the best finisher of all time! no possible discussion. And not only of Arsenal!
wow, this guy is one of the best players ever to step onto a football pitch, shame i never got to see him play in an arsenal shirt. every one of these goals was just pure magnificence. true football and arsenal legend
Wrighty has always been my favourite... not just a great player but a great personality too. He cracks me up on Absolute FM and was legendary on Top Gear too! His time at Arsenal were some of our best golden years.
say this again...this is the problem with the english football system atm...also because the english culture for the most part dismisses technical skill and intelligence and favours brawn, strength and height. The culture has not changed significantly since the days of charles hughes...it actually appears embedded in our cultural beliefs, especially the ‘decision makers’ who are often products from that culture...by this I mean there is a new generation of coaches who have a different appreciation of the game, and player development. yet often the choices of who 'progresses' is left in the main part to old school thinkers...for instance, if u look at argentina they have messi, aguero...why!? well their culture has as their “God” figure Diego Maradona...therefore their approach to developing players comes from the want and need to ‘find’ the new Diego...hence the progression of players like Javier Saviola, Pablo Aimar, Ariel Ortega, Carlos Tevez, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero...i believe all these players follow the similar pattern of type...argentinian football has sought to develop a player based on their cultural beliefs...now look at england and we see the issue, the way we look at our players and how we regard them reflects in how we coach and nurture our players...our role models for young players are in today's game gerrard x rooney...now I am not saying this is wrong or bad, but there does seem to be a desire to produce this type of player offer other types we have produced...and the issue comes down to the idea of skill and trickery. Players like hoddle, gazza, chris waddle, barnes were all talented players for club and country. But the ‘iconic’ images are those of terry butcher, stuart pearce and ince bloodied or screaming continue to personify our game...skill has been somewhat shelved over passion and physicality.
How comes pundits never talk about Wright? This man is an absolute legend. Up there with Pele,Ronaldo,C.Ronaldo,Messi,Ronaldinho and Maradona. Wow. Because hes a black british guy maybe lol?
What's your point? Pele is black and so are Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Henry, Thuram, Davids, Eusebio etc, etc. You're really saying Ian Wright is not a legend just because he is BLACK and BRITISH? That does not make any sense, a lot of english players in this national team are black.
Lucaz99 lol. I said Black British. Not black. I can't be asked to explain tbh. His stats and special circumstances should mean that he should be just as cherished as the likes of Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne. But he isnt so I can only assume the obvious. But despite that, you are right.
Are you kidding me? Let's be real here Ian Wright scored a lot of goals in a pretty weak PL, (Norwich and Villa finished 2nd and 3rd in 93) the PL back in the early/mid 90s was pretty average, no English team came close to competing for the CL back then. If Wright was so good why did he only play for England 33 times? I'm not hating on him, he was a very good player for one of the biggest teams in England but to put his name along side with Pele, both Ronaldo's, Messi and Maradona is vastly overrating him.
Josh R your argument is absolutely weak wright deserve to be mentioned I the same breath as those players.. you saying that villa and Norwich finishing in the top 4 that year showed how weak the league was is a bad analysis villa was a top side in those days same for Norwich you judge them by their standards now...
Are you honestly saying Ian Wright deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Pele and Maradona? Honestly? I'm a United fan but I'll admit Giggs, Keane, Schloles, Cantona don't deserve to be named with Pele and Maradona and them 4 players were better than Ian Wright. Obviously Norwich and Villa were decent sides back in the early 90's but they weren't that good even back then, if you stuck Norwich and Villa of 92/93 in today's premier league they'd probably be fighting relegation than challenging for the title.
