I’m going to do the same thing with my Yellow RG550- turn it into a low priced Desert Yellow Jem 777. I want the real thing but I just don’t see myself paying $3000-4000. The Pyramid inlay isn’t worth quite that much to me :P

From what I remember CC was given the yellow one by Vai and then he went on to primarily play 2 blue ones called "Thing 1 and Thing 2", he also had a yellow headstock,wood finish one he played on the Flesh and Blood tour. He mentioned that they stayed in tune better than his B.C. Rich guitars did.
Had a yellow 1987 550 rosewood board and black stock. Only one I've ever seen like that. Had a pink X2N bridge bucker. Also had a 5150 PV then. Probably the most gain ever devised by man. You can imagine how horrid that sound but hey I was learning power chords and thought I was awesome lol
I’m in the middle of re-painting my 1987 Road Flair Red 550. Didn’t realize how faded it was until I took the plate off. Looks almost pink compared to the red underneath.
Old vid, but I got a RI in 2019. It's the yellow one that finally scratches that itch I've had for one since the 80s. Love it! But I'll tell you what; I have an '87 in black and it's the better guitar of the two (mostly because the old one is broken in). I just don't get the "they're only worth $3-400". Now I realize Phil's talking about the street, but these are fine guitars that are amazingly versatile. I mean VERY versatile. Definitely not just for shredding. They're built to perfection. Far better than Strats of that era. My '87 is one of the most stable guitars I own. It always in tune when I pull it out of the case, or off the wall. There's just something special about it. Also, if you're lucky enough to find a vintage one that's in good shape (like mine!) and are worried about how you'll look on stage playing a shredder guitar, and you're playing country, know that the black one kind of blends in. I came close to trading mine, and boy am I glad that didn't happen!
Didn't know the fluoresce, fades in the light. Fortunately, as you said yourself, I too always keep mine in the case and only play it for special occasions. I have the 2012 Rg1 in yellow, with any luck the paint they used may be more resistant to fading than the originals.
I bought one of these as a teenager (all black with maple neck/fingerboard) in 1995 for about $400. It was my first "real" guitar. I hated it because I didn't understand the Floyd in it, and I was more of a Slash/Hetfield fanboy. I ended up trading it in at Sam Ash in NJ for $125 that I put toward a new Gibson Explorer. Ten years later and those things were selling for about a grand. I didn't miss it, but I did regret selling it... :) Nice upgrades on yours. Very good CC tone, too.

Hey Phillip and guitar fans!! maybe some of you can help!!! I bought an RG 550 new at a music store in Omaha probably 1988. My serial number indicates its April of 1987, but it is a deep dark blue. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
I owned an original back in the late 1980s and I have loads of pictures in addition to my memory and I have one of the new ones. The yellow is exactly the same.
I the same guitar but a 2018. As soon as I saw it on the wall at the store I knew I had to have it. It’s kind of ugly, but maybe that’s it’s allure. It’s one of my favorites even though I only play it once in a while. it’s just a pure shred machine.
I got the RG550MXX Road Flare Red one when they were released in 2007, and when I get done playing her, she gets wiped down and goes back in her case. So far she is now 11 years old and the color looks as bright as when she was new. I think its the elements and sunlight that affect these florescent colors more then anything. I swapped the pickups for a set of Joe Satriani Dimarzios, and a true velvet single coil. I of course kept the original pick-ups though. She sounds awesome, and plays so easy. Bought her for 899.00 and in her condition and color I see them going for 1500.00 if you can find one in Road Flare Red. PS: The Genesis ones they are releasing now are not the same. The have a different neck design again, and different pick-ups, and do not come with a matching hardshell case, or commemorative backplate.
You could always spray them with a good automotive clear that has great sunscreen in them made just for that purpose...especially on candy and fluorescent paints...being in the lowrider community for decades...I see how good they can be...and in direct sunlight...food for thought.
Does anyone have any idea if there is a pre wired kit for the RG? I have a 1987 im restoring the wiring is a nightmare. The input jack is one of those barrel types. I haven't been able to find any online. Any help would be appreciated!
