@@BloggingTheology This nuanced view of Ibnu Taimiyyah is in fact the opinion of the vast majority of contemporary salafi scholars. The mainstream salafi opinion is that acts of innovation/ bid' a performed by Muslim layman who are ignorant about the fact that those acts of worship are innovations will be rewarded for their good intentions. The act itself is rejected as the prophet- sallallahu alayhi wa sallam- said but the good intention may be rewarded. That's the mainstream opinion amongst salafi scholars. With due Respect, the writings or the opinion of Jon Hoover means absolutely very little to the people who have understanding of the religion of Islam. He is neither a scholar or a reference of Islamic Studies. The view of Ibn Taymiyyah regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him) or visitation of graves is that, it is a bid'a an innovation; Thus not from the legislations of Islam. If you truely want to know the view or the life of Ibn Taymiyyah. There is no better person to tell you about him, than his own student. Ibn Qayyim al Jawziya.

“Good intentions” doesn’t always lead to good deeds. It should be paired with the knowledge of the divine purpose. As seen in the hadith of the three men who decided to be abstinent from the mundane desires but prophet Mohamed denounced their act and said: whom desires not my way, is not from me.

A) A'ishah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) as saying: If any one introduces into this affair of ours anything which does not belong to it, it is rejected. Ibn `Isa said: The Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said: If anyone practices any action in a way other than our practice, it is rejected. - Sunan Abi Dawud 4606, Kitab Sunnah B) Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: (who fought in twelve Ghazawat in the company of the Prophet). I heard four things from the Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) and they won my admiration. He said; - 1. "No lady should travel on a journey of two days except with her husband or a Dhi-Mahram; - 2. "No fasting is permissible on the two days of Id-ul-Fitr and `Id-ul-Adha; - 3. "No prayer (may be offered) after the morning compulsory prayer until the sun rises; and no prayer after the `Asr prayer till the sun sets; - 4. "One should travel only for visiting three Masjid (Mosques): Masjid-al-Haram (Mecca), Masjid-al- Aqsa (Jerusalem), and this (my) Mosque (at Medina). - Sahih al-Bukhari 1995, Book of Fasting Abu Hurairah (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) cxrsed the women who frequently visit the graves. Related At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban graded it as Sahih. - Bulugh al-Maram 586, Book of Funerals C) Quran 39 : 44 - Say: "To Allah belongs all intercession. Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) as saying: Do not pray facing towards the graves, and do not sit on them. - Sahih Muslim 972b, Book of Janazah Abu'l-Hayyaj al-Asadi told that 'Ali (b. Abu Talib) said to him: Should I not send you on the same mission as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) sent me? Do not leave an image without obliterating it, or a high grave without levelling It. This hadith has been reported by Habib with the same chain of transmitters and he said: (Do not leave) a picture without obliterating it. - Sahih Muslim 969, Book of Janazah Jabir said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that the graves should be plastered or they be used as sitting places (for the people), or a building should be built over them. - Sahih Muslim 970, Book of Janazah Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not make your houses graves, and do not make my grave a place of festivity. But invoke blessings on me, for your blessings reach me wherever you may be. - Abu Dawud 2042 (Sahih Albani), Kitab Hajj etc.

May Allah reward you brother Paul. But I would like to clarify one thing here that a Muslim has no hesitation in accepting that a Muslim will be rewarded for his good intention in doing any act of worship even if it was not legislated by the religion provided that he was unaware of its prohibition or disapproval, just as no Muslim will be punished for committing the sins that he did not know were considered as sins in the religion. This is one of the most basic principles of Islam and no follower of Imam ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) would have any problem in accepting it. But good intention does not make the deed acceptable in and of itself as ibn Taymiyyah himself said that these people will only be rewarded for their intentions and not the deed. So as far as the act itself was concerned then his position was quite clear that it is undoubtedly prohibited and greatly disliked in the religion and his whole life and his struggles against the innovators bears testimony to that fact

As a revert from Christianity to islam, I can see the celebration of the prophet SAW’s birthday being problematic. Perhaps early Christians started off celebrating Jesus in that way and overtime it morphed into worship. I even read one commentary that some of the idols they worshipped in Mecca started as statues of important people that morphed into worship overtime. All that being said - I don’t claim to know more than scholars or learned Muslims and I don’t know enough on the matter to say anything in absolute terms

Almost every sect became dominate in specific time and suppressed other groups. So, you can't "Cherry pick" a group of scholars from specific time and make such a generalization. What you can do is to return to the "original sources" from the first 3 generations and make comparisons between him and his opponents.

Ibn Taymiyyah was a gifted jurist, but that's it. He was sorely lacking knowledge in many other areas. He was imprisoned because of his heretical anthropomorphic descriptions of Allah - telling that. And as society has changed greatly since ibn Taymiyyah's time, it is more beneficial to follow a scholar more in tuned with present practices and realities rather than fixating on a past reality that does not exist any longer. It would also benefit yourself, Paul, if you explored the sunnah more deeply than constantly falling back on certain personalities.

@Google Account Astaghfirullah is correct. You cannot go to ibn Taymiyyah and ask his opinion about whether modern international banking is halal or not because he is dead. Nor can you glean from his books anything because that institution did not exist in his lifetime. My comment is urging one to seek timely guidance from a modern, living scholar in matters of religion rather than stupidly following a relic of the past, like ibn Taymiyyah, whose rulings and concerns were based on his time. Ibn Taymiyyah is not a prophet, nor are his opinions inspired. He was deeply flawed in some aspects of his understanding of Islam. Ignoring that, as so many do, is to deify the man - and that is shirk. It is through honest study that Islamic scholars today can sift through the work of past scholarship, understand the context, shortcomings, and strengths, to provide beneficial guidance to our lives today. That in no way implies disrespect of past scholars or ignoring the sunnah. To suggest that we learn the sunnah through ibn Taymiyyah's commentary is to put the cart before the horse. It is better to examine ibn Taymiyyah through the sunnah, accepting the good and leaving the bad - rather than making the sin of putting ibn Taymiyyah on par with the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Your comment implies you have no real knowledge of how traditional Islamic sciences are taught, or what qualifications merit one the title of faqih, qadi, mufti, or any of the other titles of Islamic scholars.

Our best scholars who become the one of the greatest makkah imam' families (Syaikh Nawawi al Bantani) were killed by one of Wahabi's attempts to raid Makkah, The Imam himself was almost killed because he was one of Syafi'i prominent scholar at that time. The prominent Indonesian Islamic Scholar, Hadratus Syaikh Hasyim Ays'arie wrote in his book for Indonesian Muslim not to follow the teaching of Ibn Taymiyyah and his student Ibn Qayyim and his fatwa become the main guidance for Indonesian Muslim Majority. Now we have known for sure the fruit of Ibn Taymiyya's teachings and legacy have only been the source of fitnah for muslim societies anywhere on earth. All those preaching purification on Islamic practices have turned into a very arrogant groups within Islamic society. Thinking that only themselves is the rightful muslim and often viewed other muslim as bid'ah doers even musyrik despite they are just minorities. All terrorist groups, such as ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-qaedah, Jabhah Nusra etc. were the manifestation of such teachinng. If you think and examine the history clearly, you'll find that the fruita of the teaching of Ibn Taymiyya have become the source of fitnah and the destructions of Islamic historical sites, and become the foundtaion of makkah becoming las vegas city. Why does Allah say salam to the 5 ,6 prophets that died 4000 3000 years ago.if they are dead would salam reach them. There are so many proofs if you understand quran. Why did the prophet sacrifice lamb on his birthday and then after him ali r.a. would 2 1on prophet s.a.w. name and one by himself. Why spend for a lamb on birthday of a dead prophet he is poor. The sahabas used to do milaad un nabi in their houses by telling about the prophet to their families and thus was their celebration. Why did the prophet have a haris r.a. who used to praise poetry on the high status of the prophet and why did the prophet kiss his forehead for his beautiful poetry and even give his own seat fir him to say the poetry . But suddenly all hadiths become daieef to wahabs . Albani has taken out 350 hadith from imam bukharis boon adab ul mufrid. And now you cant find the real which had hadith of kissing hands feet of rasool and sahaba by tabaeen . The celebration and other topics . Why is it that salafies try to derive something new and destroy the real islam . Now you only find sahih means right . Sahih adab ul mufrid and albani corrects imam bukharu and now is his master .

The Prophet ﷺ is physically dead, as we all will be. But of course the soul remains alive. So we don't ask for intercession from the dead, this can be understood in how the companions asked for intercession from the Prophet ﷺ whilst he was alive, but once he passed away the companions asked for the uncle of the prophet to do dua to Allah swt for it to rain during a drought.

Question: Who is Ibn Taymiyyah, whom Wahhabis [Salafis] call Sheikh-ul-Islam and follow? What did our scholars say about him? Answer: He was formerly a Hanbali scholar of fiqh and hadith. Then he became a la-madhhabi. He was jailed in Egypt twice due to his writings that went against Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l Jama'ah. He was born in 1263 in Harran [a town of Urfa province in Turkey]. He died in 1328 while he was imprisoned in the citadel of Damascus. Ibn Taymiyyah could not appreciate the superiority of Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l Jama'ah scholars. He denied Tasawwuf (Sufism) and, therefore, deviated from Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l Jama'ah. His books are sources for opponents of the four madhhabs who call themselves Salafists. Opponents of the four madhhabs praise him and address him as the master of restorers (mujaddids) of Islam. That Ibn Taymiyya was unfortunate and misguided is written in the books Sayf-ul-Jabbar and Talim-us-Subyan. The latter was written in Persian. In the book Tathir-ul-fuad min-danis-il i'tiqad written by Muhammad Bahit, who was a Hanafi scholar in Jami-ul-Azhar, and in the other books, such as At-Tawassuli bin-Nabi wa bis-Salihin, Shawahid-ul-Haqq, Jawahir-ul-Bihar, Sayf-ul-Jabbar, and Talim-us-Subyan, it is proven with evidence that Ibn Taymiyyah lapsed into heresy. Ibn Battuta, Ibn Hajar al-Makki, Imam-i Subki, Izzaddin bin Jama'a, Abu Hayyan Zahiri, Zahid al-Kawthari, Yusuf an-Nabhani, Imam-i Sharani, Ahmad bin Sayyid Zayni Dahlan, Sheikh-ul-Islam Mustafa Sabri Efendi, and many other scholars wrote refutations to Ibn Taymiyyah and explained his heresy and kufr beliefs. Necip Fazıl Kısakurek said, "Sayyid Abdulhakim Arwasi stated, 'Ibn Taymiyyah was a mulhid who damaged the religion from within.'" It is written on the 107th page of the tafsir of Sawi that he was misguided and misguiding others. Islamic scholars stated: "He was a person whose knowledge was made by Allahu ta'ala a cause for his misguidance." [Ibn Hajar al-Makki - Fatawa-i Hadisiyya] "Ibn Taymiyyah was such a person that great scholars gave answers to his corrupt opinions and flimsy evidence and showed the ugliness of his ideas. [Muhammad] Izz ibni Jama'a [Shafi'i scholar of fiqh and hadith who served as a qadi in Damascus, Egypt, and Jerusalem] said about him, 'He was a person whom Allahu ta'ala misguided, led astray, and made wear the shirt of lowness. He foolishly raised objections to Islamic scholars and especially to the Rightly Guided Caliphs.'" [Ibn Hajar al-Makki - Al Jawhar-ul-Munzam] "The ideas of Ibn Taymiyyah are worthless. He was misguided and misguiding Muslims. He deviated from the consensus of Muslims and took a heretical path. Islamic scholar stated in unanimity that he was a heretic. Kutbud-Bardiri wrote this in detail in his commentary on Mukhtasar." [Tahir Muhammad Sulayman - Zahiratul-fiqhil-Kubra] "Kitab-ul-Arsh is one of his most awful books. There were scholars who said that a person who addressed him as Sheikh-ul-Islam would become a disbeliever." [Imam-i Subki] (He says so in the supercommentary on Nabras.) "Whoever follows Ibn Taymiyyah, his property and life is halal [lawful]." (Mirat-ul-Janan, supercommentary on Nabras) Ibn Taymiyya says in his Kitab-ul-Arsh, "Allah sits on the Arsh, and He leaves space for His Messenger to sit next to Him." In his book As-Sirat-ul-Mustaqim, he declared some notable companions, such as Ibn Abbas, disbelievers. (Kashf-uz-Zunun) In his book Al-Abudiyyat, he says that making dhikr of Allahu ta'ala's name is innovation and heresy, and he made vicious slanders on Sufi masters. Ibn Taymiyyah said, "The existence of the Arsh is beginningless [qadim]." (Sharh al-Aqaid al-Adudiyya) While descending from the minbar of the mosque of Damascus, he said, "Allah descends from the sky to the earth just as I am descending now." [Ibn Battuta - Tuhfat-un-Nuzzar] Even Abd ar-Raziq Pasha, who was a disciple of Abduh and followed in his footsteps, said: "Just as Wahhabism is linked to Ibn Taymiyyah in one respect, so the reformists ideas of Abduh, who is called the restorer [mujaddid] of the current century, are linked to Ibn Taymiyyah." Ibn Taymiyyah said, "It is not necessary to make up qada salats." However, making up a qada salat is obligatory in all of the four madhhabs. He claimed that the torment of Hell would not be eternal. However, there are many Qur'anic verses stating that disbelievers will remain in Hell eternally. (Al-Baqara 81, Al-Ahzab 65, Fussilat 28, Az-Zukhruf 74) By saying "Umar made a lot of mistakes," he objected to the hadith-i sharif that says "Allahu ta'ala has put the true word on the tongue of Umar [He never makes a mistake]." Even if the majority of the Companions erred in the matters deduced by way of ijtihad, their errors were related to ijtihad. It cannot be known whether a mujtahid erred in his ijtihad because an ijtihad does not invalidate another ijtihad. For this reason, those honorable people, who were mujtahids, should not be criticized. Though the ijtihads of the four madhhabs are different from one other, their founders did not criticize one another on the basis of difference in their ijtihads. He attacked Sufi masters, such as Hadrat Sadraddin al-Konawi and Ibn Arabi and said, "The books of Ghazali are full of fabricated hadiths." (Hadiqa) Hadrat Imam-i Sharani stated: "Ibn Taymiyyah denied Tasawwuf [Sufism] and made defamatory remarks on the Awliya'. One must beware of reading his books in the same way as one bewares of predators." [Tabakat-ul-Kubra] Hadrat Imam-i Suyuti stated: "Ibn Taymiyyah was arrogant and full of himself. It was his habit to represent himself as superior to everybody, to look down on the person whom he talked to, and to make fun of great scholars." [Kam-ul Muarid] Muhammad Ali Bey said in his Hitat-ush-Sham: "Ibn Taymiyyah’s and Priest Luther’s aims were identical. Whereas the Christian reformer was successful, the reformer of Islam was unsuccessful." Hadrat Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani stated: He spoke ill of the great ones of the Companions and said "It is haram to set out on a journey to visit the grave of the Messenger of Allah. [Hadrat] Ali's iman was not valid because he was a child when he believed. [Hadrat] Uthman had excessive love for wealth." [Ad-Durar-ul-Kamina] Hadrat Ibn Hajar al-Makki said: "Ibn Taymiyyah denied the immunity of prophets from sins. However, it is one of the attributes of prophets." He objected to one's visiting the blessed grave of our Master the Prophet and those of the Companions, the Awliya', scholars, and pious Muslims. He considered it haram to use them as a means for intercession. [Fatawa al-Hadisiyya]

People like Ibn Taymiyya remind me of the stone-hearted rabbi people that master jesus christ (pbuh) was sent to. What Ibn Taymiyya's saying is the actual bidaa. Master Abu Baker (pbuh) saw a man crying at the grave of the prophet and putting the dirt of the grave on his head and master Abu Bakr didn't say a word. Intercession and speaking with the buried has nothing.....absolutely nothing to do with polytheism, nor with the customs of pre-islamic arabs. Intercession is in the heart of the religion of Islam and it only reaffirms the oneness of God by acknowledging his servants and slaves who were enlightened by God's Grace. Ibn Taymiyya and those who follow him are actually following in the footsteps of satan without realizing it. Satan was the first who rejected intercession, he refused to intercede with God via our beloved Adam (pbuh). And for this God condemned him, even though satan was not a polytheistic. And in the time of prophet Moses (pbuh) satan asked prophet moses for redemption and for the forgiveness of god. And God revealed to moses that if satan prostrated at the grave of prophet Adam, he will forgive him. But Satan said "Did I prostrate to him when he was alive to prostate to him when he's dead?" And so Satan remained ignorant and condemned by his continual rejection of intercession. Rejecting intercession contains polytheism, while embracing it affirms monotheism, this would be obvious for those who have sense and spirit.

Sisters and Brothers. Celebration of the prophet birthday is INNOVATION. He never Celebrated it nor did the prophet celebrate the OTHER PROPHETS birthdays nor did the Companions celebrate any prophets birthday. Prophet.M was asked why do you fast on mondays he replied " i was born this day". The prophet merely showed GRATITUDE by offering a fast to God almighty he didnt have a celebration. Islam teach us how to IDENTIFY truth. When something is PURE/righteous you WILL RECOGNIZE IT and when something is bad for us YOU WILL RECOGNIZE it but when something is UNRECOGNIZABLE as either good/bad then ISLAM encourage us NOT TO GAMBLE WITH OUR IMAAN and rather be SAFE than SORRY so logic dictates because theres no SOLID CLEAR evidance and confusion the OBVIOUS DECISION would be NOT TO CELEBRATE and preserve your imaan. 365days a year you can make THIKR and all sorts of prayers for the prophet JUST DONT DO IT ON THIS SPECIFIC day because then it becomes part of the religion as its crept in today. Same with ALL the holidays like mothers day etc DONT DO IT that one day do it 365 days a year and randomly THIS IS THE POINT dont CARVE IN STONE a specific day. When you study SATANISM you will find their most CELEBRATED most important festival is CELEBRATING THE BIRTHDAY to give give credit and SELF praise to the SELF. There is no God. You are GOD. You were born out of your own power. THIS holiday his NO LINK TO ISLAM but its GREATLY PRAISED in satanism. Hadeeth teach EVERY INNOVATION is a MISSGUIDANCE and every missguidance leads to the hellfire. BE safe my family dont Gamble your imaan and your family. Do whats right.

Nice reading! With all due respect to Jon Hoover's critisizm on Ibn Taymiyya's, he's out of scope to critisize any scholar of Islam for a simple reason that he wouldn't fully understand the issue of "Baab Sedd Al-Tharai'i" باب سد الذرائع, or in English I might translate it roughly like: The cause of blocking reasons, which is to block any innovation in practicing Islam that the Prophet (PBUH) or his companions didn't do in order to block the way on doing worse things which lead to the worst.

No one does that. And the date of passing away is not the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal. And even if it were the date the Sacred Law has prohibited us from mourning more than three days after the demise of a person. The time period for rejoicing and being grateful on the other hand has not been specified and are thus limitless.

Peace Thank you for this useful job that you made. Actually Ibn taymiyah has been much misrepresented during the history of Islam. He was genius, a devout muslim. For example His ideas on natural sciences is good and brilliant. Or his hostility agaisnt many superstitions which were (and are) widespread crises. About issue of graves iam not 100 percent for his side or 100 percent against. As I said he was an intelectual but unfortunately biased against some ideas and muslim sects. We see how Ibn taymiah rejects a hadith as weak while it is obviously authentic or identifies some hadith as wahid while it is mutawatir or mashhoor!! Just because of undermining some one's theology he rejects sth obviuosly true. Even Ibn Hajar Al Asqalani mention this problem with ibn taymiah. In some cases I can not make sense of his way of reasoning. It is not a good way to refute shia' with saying that "Ghadir hadith" is wahid! Or accepting some set of hadithes and ignoring others. There are other troubles with him on nature of God(does he have a direction? Does he have a physical body? And etc) and other issues.

Sheikul Islam was a title bestowed by the state . This man was imprisoned several times for being not mainstream . The prophet , peace be upon him , declared that he has completed the religion of Islam in his farewell sermon . So whatever scholars say or think after the death of the prophet are just either personal opinions or commentary .
