NOTICE: In July 2021 the channel name changed from HamCuredSmoke
To Ham Radio A2Z. All of the earlier videos (like this one) are still available.
The series is finally back after a long pause. This time we will start looking at the memory channel features. There's a lot to cover so this will take a few videos to cover everything.
Advanced Instructions pages: 11-2 - 11-4 & 11-2

I'm committed to watching your whole series, Tom. Great stuff and I'm learning a ton of things I would take months to learn by just reading the not-so-friendly manual!

Your pace and style are perfect. Icom should just list your channel as their Ic-7100 operating manual. It's that good. Well done! NZ5i, Houston

Hi Tom, this is a great series for the 7100. My previous mobiles were 2 IC706 purchased from HRO Atlanta when the 706 was initally introduced and over the years the displays have gone bad. Mostly the polorizer. I plan to restore them but in the meantime I bought the 7100. It was close to the same price that I paid for the 706. 73 AC0Y Orlando Fl.

Hi Tom, Thank you for your videos on IC-7100. I have learnt more from them than I would from the 2 manuals. I recently come back to HF after 25 years. I can't believe how small and feature packet the 7100 is. 73 Les G4JDC

Thanks for the kind words. They do continue to get smaller and smaller. Pretty soon we’ll need a magnifying glass just to operate them😉

Great series! Thanks for doing this. One question I can't find.... how to change an offset step. there are some 6M repeaters with a -1.6MHz or 1.0 MHz I would like to access. How do I access the steps?
@HamRadioA2Z
@HamRadioA2Z 2 года назад
Hi Robert. Thanks for the kind words. There are 2 different ways to do non-standard offsets with the 7100. You can use the SET menu- Go to Function -> SPLIT/DUP -> DUP Offset. There you can change the automatic offset that occurs when you press DUP. You’ll find this on page 4-25 in the advanced instructions. You can also program the receive and transmit frequencies separately into the A and B VFOs, respectively and turn on SPLIT. You can save the non-standard split into a memory. You’ll find this on page 4-30 in the advanced instructions. Hope this helps.

Tom, Please instruct on how to program a "node"...I don't see it in the advanced manual for the IC-7100

Hi Mark. Sorry for the delayed reply. I’m not sure what you mean by a “node”. Are you talking about programming it for a hotspot?

I noticed that if I am on A channel 18 (just pulling a number out of the air) and want to go to C channel 25, lets say, when switching it carries the same channel number.... so I'll have to learn how to have the frequencies I want to go to without having to turn the dials all through 99 channels as I switch "bands" ... from A to C in this case. It changed the channels all across a-e and makes them the same.

Hi David. There are definitely pros and cons to arranging the memories in banks that way Icom has here. There are also many different ways of arranging your channels between the banks. You'll just have to figure out what works best for you.

@@HamRadioA2Z Thanks for the reply. I need to check your video on data opps but I have to do a Partial Reset to get my phone/mic to work ... and I can't get the radio to be controlled via the pomputer ... I need to run Winlink ... fldigi (later).

Some how i lost my A bank memo , how can i get it back , when i scroll through abcde , a is missing
@HamRadioA2Z
@HamRadioA2Z 2 года назад
I have to say that is a new one on me. I will do some digging in the manual and play around with my radio. I can’t think of any setting or adjustment that would make the A bank just disappear. If I find anything, I’ll comment here.

Split is used on FM to work some satellites. Some sstv repeaters also use it.

Hi Tom - I don't understand what the call channels in 2m and 70cm are for. Why are they treated any differently from other memory storage. I went back and re-watched a little #7 and I don't find any mention of what they're supposed to be for. Why have them? Thanks.
@HamRadioA2Z
@HamRadioA2Z 3 года назад
Hi Ben. To be honest, I don't really use them myself. However, some people do. They are there to give you a quick 1 button recall for a favorite frequency or two. I use mine just for 146.52 Simplex. You could also use them for the main repeater frequency you normally use at home. So regardless of what memory channel you're on or if you're in VFO mode, you just hit the call button and it goes to your favorite channel. The fact that they have separate ones for VHF and UHF actually makes it less useful, in my opinion. This way, you have to be on the right band for the call channel you want. I'd rather they had just 1 call channel and the radio went to that channel no matter what mode or band I was on. 73, Tom

@@HamRadioA2Z Hi Tom, understood, thanks for clarifying. I thought I was missing something obvious. I guess I can't complain about more memory.

Hi Joe. Not yet. Just barely keeping up with the subjects I've already bitten off. You might check out PI-Star and the MMDVM board from N5BOC. I built it up on a Pi-Zero and it works pretty well. There's info out there on how to do it. You just have to dig around.
