Very helpful video! I bought a 7100 because I want a mobile transceiver than can cover HF and VHF/UHF,. I have a 7300, but I've committed that rig to my ever expanding Ham shack. I am impressed by the ease with which 2-m repeaters can be programmed into the 7100. 73 KI5KET

Thank you for this. You really don't know how much I appreciate this series. I am a brand new Ham with a brand new IC-7100. I bought the radio because it is an all mode all band radio. After reading through the basic manual and making my way through most of the full manual, then trying to put it into practice I was beginning to think I was way over my head with a radio I had no idea how to use. Looking forward to the rest of the series on this radio. Thanks again. KE8OTX

Hi Mark. Thanks for the kind words. You can almost use the 7100 without reading the manual, at least just to transmit and receive on 1 frequency. However, there is so much more that the radio can do if you learn it with tutorials or with the manual.

I have a General already-it was much cheaper than a radio. So I just bought an IC-7100, a power supply and waiting on my antenna and cable- really good videos-thanks for your time as a “video Elmer”

Liked and subscribed. Good stuff. Thanks for putting this together Tom. Very helpful. I attached a cheapo mobile antenna on a pizza pan to my 7100, and was able to hit the local repeater that's ~5 or 6 miles away. I participated in a local net, and had my first conversation with some other ham folks in my area. First time not using my HT or echolink. I've got the local repeater and the NCFs stored.

I almost never make comments but you are doing something I've wanted ever since I got my ic-7100 which is my first radio. There are lots of videos on the ic-7300 but nothing comprehensive on the ic-7100 that I've found. I've learned some new, useful things from video #2 and look forward to continuing watching and learning from this series. You are clear, concise and the camera shots are excellent. Subscribed and liked. Keep them coming!

PL (Private Line) is a registered trademark of Motorola and CG (Channel Guard) is a registered trademark of GE land moble they both are the same for the generic for CTCSS (CONTINUOUS TONE CODED SQUELCH) which is normally used on the input of most repeaters. CTCSS was and is used to keep noise from keying up repeaters.

i just got a 7100. Frankly, this video is easier than the manual. :) I have to do a net control tomorrow, so this is a life saver. I would not want to call the club secretary and say I am out of business. So thanks, I think this video was exactly what I needed.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad it was helpful. I have found the Icom manuals to be far better than what you get with some of the Chinese products. However, they are still far from clear for many of the operations.

I have the IC-7100 and the IC-7300. Lucky for me you are doing all the heavy work for me. I was doing this on my Yaesu FTM-400XDR this morning. ICOM sure has it over Yaesu on ease of using their menus. I think I was able to do this the first time without consulting the manual. I have to grab the manual every time I program in a repeater on my Yaesu because I don't do it enough. The ICOM radios are just intuitive enough to help you through the process most of the time and a similar from radio to radio unlike Yaesu radios are different radio to radio.

Tom, I have only watched a couple of your videos at this point, but you have really nailed the audio quality on your videos. My biggest beef with even some of the well known Tubers is audio quality. Really enjoying the content and strait-forward but we’ll thought out content. Keep up the good work. KO4YML.

This was good, learning some things that I did not know, I have had this radio for a few months, I have it programed via RT software and a club freq list, but still learning the rig, and have no clue about D Star yet, but looking forward to finding my DV Dongle a new home soon.

Can you please show us how to program a 2 meter repeater that does not show a frequency at the bottom of the display?!? Is that where the A/B button and the Split function come into play?? Thank you!!

Tom, many thanks for confirming the type of control cable we can use in lieu of the two options provided by ICOM. I couldn't easily find this info elsewhere. I am new to the 7100 and am using it in a base config on a small table so the standard 11.5 ft cable included is way too long for what I need. Looking forward to reviewing the rest of your IC-7100 videos!

I just started watching this series for my 7100. Was that hand mic an optional mic. Mine came with the HM198. Also my control says D-STAR while your control head says DIGITAL when the video had it in your truck.

Hi. Yes, the HM-151 remote control mic is optional. I managed to pick one up used. I find it very helpful for tuning around and changing bands when operating mobile. I'm not sure what digital reference you are referring to. The radio displays DV when it is in DStar mode. I haven't done anything with DStar or any digital HF modes in the videos yet. 73, Tom WA2IVD

Tom - Thank you for this series, it is great. I have a question. At about the 16:00 minute mark of the video, immediately underneath the frequency, your screen shows DUP - . What does that mean or represent. On my screen I have DUP+, but I can't transmit, only receive. How do I change it? Michael

Hi Michael. DUP- means that the radio is in Duplex mode. That is, the transmit frequency is different from the receive frequency. The - means that it will transmit below the receive frequency. The + on yours means it will transmit above the receive frequency. The amount above or below is set by the standard offset. The default on 2 meters is 600khz. On 440mhz the default is 5Mhz. Not sure why you wouldn’t be able to transmit. What frequency was your radio set for? BTW- sorry for the delayed reply. Saw your comment a couple days ago and couldn’t respond just then, then got busy and forgot about it.

Great stuff... spent all evening reading the manual on the used 7100 I just received and assembled today. Resetting and starting over was the way to go as well as your explanation of the repeater Tone settings (I didn't have both set). Now I know why I couldn't get into the repeater with this unit or save it to memory. Thanks!

The cable is a CAT 6e/7/8 double shielded Ethernet cable. A 15' cable Cat8 SSTP with gold plated connectors on Amazon is only $20.00 USD. The icom cable is over priced. Strait through vs. 568a does not matter. Since the same pins connect on each side. 1-1, 2-2,3-3, 4-4,5-5, 6-6,7-7,8-8. Only matters in the case of a roll over or a 568a - 568b cable (cross over, non standard) Thanks for going over this radio. I just purchased mine yesterday. I am waiting on pins and needles for it to arrive. Going through your entire series now.

Hi Jim, I'm running my IC-7100 through a portable battery rig and the included cable is just so much longer than I need it to be. Since you seem to know much more than I do about these things I'm wondering if a cable like this will work, since it's not a CAT 6e: "Cat6A Shielded (SSTP) Ethernet Network Booted Cable 4 Feet (1.2 Meters) Gigabit LAN Network Cable RJ45 High Speed Patch Cable" Could I use a CAT 8 with the gold connectors? Thank you in advance for any help.

@@travisyoung3455 The cat 6 cable may work. However, the cat 8 has additional shielding. Close proximity to a RF source can induce errors in the system. I experienced this the first go around and in some cases can cause your radio to reboot right in the middle of transmission. So, honestly I would stick to the cat 8. In cat 8 each pair is individually shielded as well as the bundle being shielded, not to mention the additional twists per inch. So, yes, go with cat 8 with the gold shielded connectors.

Hi. Sorry, but the 7100 does not have that capability. It only has a single receiver and frequency synthesizer section. So it can’t do full duplex or cross band repeat.

@@HamRadioA2Z I am happy that you get a commision, if you hadn't mentioned it, I would not have known. I have the 9700, 7300 and the 705 and the 7100 still fits into this line up Tom. It was an indication of where Icom were heading when it was released, but it still can hold "its own" as a shack/portable rig.

Yep. That would have been good. It would have been better if I showed connecting up a ground. In this particular video, I was just using a small mag-mount antenna mounted on a metal plate on my deck. So I didn't bother for this particular example. Good catch.

I HAVE BOTH THOSE RADIOS BUT MY IC-7100 IS STILL IN THE BOX..SINCE I GOT IT NEARLY A YEAR OR MORE AGO.. I HAVE A YAESU -FT-991A THAT SITS ON TOP OF THE IC-7300.THAT ONE IS MY DAILY USCE RADIO..THERE IS NO D-STAR ACTIVITY IN MY AREA......04-06-2020-01:50HRS-E.S.T.......................

Hi Alex. I have found DStar vs. Fusion activity is very local/regional. Some communities are mostly Yaesu, others are mostly DStar. If you live near a large city you may have some of both. If you have a hotspot and have reasonable internet service, you can get on either system whether or not there is a compatible repeater near you. As far as Mobile HF, my opinion is that the IC 7100 is the best choice for that. The control head is already remote, by default. I have also found the large display size and angle works out very well in the vehicle. All of the rigs you are looking at are fine radios. Good luck with whichever one you pick. 73, Tom WA2IVD
