I have no idea what I would do if U would hear about such a cardboard tube inserted 'there' in my late Mama's corpse. We know how Elena's sister tried to get justice for her poor sister. It was denied. And then they laid her on display for the masses. That was done to her as if it was not enough what Tänzler had done to her.

"DECLARED" sane. It's a pretty good guess he had a pretty serious neuro-psychological condition, which may have helped his public image. Pardon Caitlin, but it's not always "evil man exploits poor woman". Mrs Hoyos' fate is tragic, especially if Tanzler accelerated her demise (manslaughter), but somebody who seriously thinks he can revive the dead by "cosmic radiation" AS A MEDIC is, himself, in dire need of psychiatric help. If Tanzler was no MD/medic, how could he have worked as radiologist? In Germany, radiologists are indeed specialised medics ("Facharzt" (sg) / "Fachärzte" (pl)).

Honestly, as disgusting as it is, I'm not surprised that the public at the time largely sympathized with him. Our culture unfortunately loves to romanticize images of dead and dying women's bodies and places much more emphasis on a man's attractions/desires than on a woman's ability to consent to or return said desires. Hopefully, the conversations that are being had right now about women's rights to govern their own bodies, both in life and in death, will change things. May Elena de Hoyos forever rest in peace.

She was probably Catholic, so they believe the soul leaves the body at death. Maybe the soul is in purgatory, working its way through, or as protestants believe, the soul is with GOD. The bodies are lifeless shells, until the resurrection. Now if they believed in santaria or voodoo or something else, I cant say.

@MJW238
@MJW238 4 года назад
J. Garnet Why put emphasis on the lack of consent, or even that she was female, any more here than on all the others stories of crazy people engaged in grave robbing? That crematorium guy had over 300 bodies lying about his yard - around half of them would have been female, and they also didn’t consent?
@rottenfiggy
@rottenfiggy 4 года назад
MJW238 It's because of public reaction. People wouldn't call someone with 300 corpses "romantic" and sympathise with them, yet that has happened here. A woman who was not romantically involved with this man had her corpse stolen and desecrated, and people decided it was sad for HIM. It's worryingly telling of what we let people get away with under the guise of "romance".

@@candicec854 "Real" can have two different meanings here. Yes, the footage is of actual people doing an actual autopsy. What this video casually implies with its editing is that the footage is of the actual victim and perpetrator, as opposed to a completely unrelated medical video. So in that sense, no it is not "real", as it is not depicting the criminal events being described in the voice over. Hope that clarifies what I meant.

Apart from the creep factor that shrouds this whole story, a question sits in my head - if he was not a doctor, meaning he had little to no knowledge of exactly how to treat tuberculosis, and he experimented with different tonics on her while still alife, can we claim to a degree that had she been treated by a proper doctor, she might have survived? In other words, can we say that not only he violated her corpse, but he also, to put it mildly, contributed towards her death as well?

He didn't do anything sexual with them, rather he read them stories, watched cartoons with them and had conversations with them. Moskvin was a deeply disturbed man who, in his own damaged mind, believed he was helping those dead children by digging them up and making them "comfortable". Damn, when I saw what he did to her body, that reminds me.. There was a case, here in Russia, when a man (who was necropolis ethnographer, polyglot linguist, translator, journalist and dictionary compiler, by the way) made a dolls out of a bodies of a little girls. He dig them out and made some terrible-looking puppets out of them, often putting music boxes or normal dolls mechanisms to their bodies, so they can make sounds. Almost 30 bodies were found in his apartment, but he admitted that he made nearly 80 "dolls". When police enters his apartment, they didn't even recognize these puppets as children bodies. His name is Anatoly Moskvin ana he was declared insane. He is still in assylum, in case you're wondering. Aaaand... Dictionaries which he make and compilated are still used in colleges (there are normal Russian-English dictionaries or dictionary of foreign words)

This story was one of the most terrible and mind-bendingly horrific things I've ever heard. I cannot imagine the pain her family felt when it was discovered what Tanzler did to her corpse. This sounds stupid, but I'm so glad she was dead. That type of guy would've done some horribly disgusting and horrific things with Elena if she recovered. Clearly very awful things she wouldn't have consented to in any form. I'm pretty steel stomached and not much grosses me out. I can deal with all bodily fluids and issues without blinking. But this story made me so extremely nauseous. Not only for Elena and her family, but the absolute indignity of the public siding with Tanzler upon hearing what he did. Not much has changed, deep in its roots, with the view about women's bodies (alive or otherwise) being for public consumption, control and commentary. I will mourn for Elena today. My god...what some people think they are entitled to do...
@julietfischer5056

We don't know the exact nature of his paraphilia. He could have been scared off by a healthy woman capable of making her own decisions. Or he might have expected her to be grateful to him and to show it by being obedient and compliant (a definition of grateful that seems all too common) -- which could have been the start of a life of verbal and psychological abuse. All too often, we think it 'sweet' or 'romantic' when someone lets their obsession with another define their life. "Oh, I wish I had a lover whose every thought was about me," says the young person trying to find The One and learning that life doesn't work that way. We never take that idea to its dark conclusion, no matter how many times we read about stalkers murdering the objects of their warped affections. The people who pitied Tanzler saw an old man in love, not a creepy old dude whose wife was his beard, and probably imagined a doomed romance rather than a one-sided obsession.

This is one of those stories where it’s so messed up that anything sounds possible. I’ve heard that he replaced her privates with a tube so he could have sex with the corpse, that urban legend that he made another doll of her and had died in it, etc. I didn’t know that people sympathized with him but it guess it isn’t surprising. All the reading I’ve ever read about him made it sound like he loved her SO much and was SO devastated by her passing that he was willing to do anything to be with his love. He was always made out to be romantic and that she would’ve wanted to be with him if she lived. This is the first I’ve heard that she never reciprocated those feelings in life and therefore was taken advantage of in death. That’s really sad for her, and I hope too that she’s resting in peace finally.

Here's a really bizarre edge case though: (and I'm not saying this has ever happened or would ever happen, and DEFINITELY not that it applies to the 'Tanzler x Hoyos' fiasco,) if, for the sake of argument, a person has the incredibly bizarre fetish that they dream of someone having sex with their own corpse after they die, and they say so in their death instrument... What should be done?
@deathbyreindeer4174
@deathbyreindeer4174 6 лет назад
Alexander R. Jaruk i think it wouldnt be carried out. Just because its on the paper work doesnt mean it can be done. For example someone may put that they want to be mummified in fruit rollups and fed to ants but if that cant be easily done the people caring for the body will just try to like bury or cremate it. I think you have to put a few different options on paperwork or work those out with loved ones before death. I could be wrong, please correct me if i am.
@AlexanderRJaruk
@AlexanderRJaruk 6 лет назад
Death By Reindeer fair enough. I asked the question because I didn't know the answer. The subtext of my question though was about the legality issue brought up above: clearly, a corpse cannot consent, but a corpse isn't a person anymore: so, if it was the express wish of the person whose body the corpse was that this is done, should it still be illegal? (Not saying it will actually happen, I mean, for starters, who could you get to be their 'partner'???)

I’m so stoked to find that you did a video on this! I heard about it a couple years ago & it’s the weirdest thing ever.

I've always found Elena's story really interesting and impactful. Exactly like you said, consent is so often not afforded to living women, much less dead ones. I can't imagine how horrified Elena's family must have been to discover what had been done to her body, but I'm so happy she's able to rest now undisturbed. On another note, I'm super interested in your thoughts about things like ostuaries and the Paris catacombs or any other architecture made of human remains.

The “disgust” expression, right? Me, too! Gives me the major creeps.

Ahh, I was hoping you'd cover Key West's Frankenstein! I had a great uncle who visited Elena while she was on display to the public. He had nightmares for years, claimed he would see her glass eyes staring at him. It was always a favorite story.

Perhaps he was a bit on the offside from working with early Radiology? Not so early Radiology but working unprotected perhaps with Radiology? He doesn't look so well outside of his lab / Shack!

Ash Bell yes I know as it was stated here. I have also studied him quite a bit as I wonder why the human mind can do what it does. I'm a student of the mind and sociology. It was meant to be light-hearted as a joke is. He didn't look too well in that picture physically or mentally. Have a great night!

This is a pretty interesting Channel I just discovered. I always had weird questions but was a afraid to ask. I always wondered what my grandparents who were embalmed looked like after 20 yrs. I was always curious. Your channel allows my inquisitive mind to find some of those strange answers.
