God its refreshing to watch one of these where the person in question was unambiguously okay with and even super enthusiastic about the arrangement

I feel like he would look 10x better without the glass eyes endlessly staring into your soul. On another note, if he wanted his corpse to get out and socialize, I feel like he wouldn't mind the college kids stealing his head so he can watch them play drinking games for a while.

I'm in London and I went to go see the head. It's literally next to the hall's coffee shop/student store. Just hanging out. Being a head.

Jeremy Bentham is my philosophical father and historical hero. He is primarily known today for the principle of utilitarianism, 'a theory of morality that advocates actions that foster happiness or pleasure and oppose actions that cause unhappiness or harm'. He advocated and campaigned for freedom of expression, individual and economic freedoms, free education, the protection of child labourers, guaranteed employment, a minimum wage, sickness benefit and old age insurance, a public health act, the separation of church and state, equal rights for women, the right to divorce, the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the abolition of slavery, the end of capital and physical punishment, the improvement of prison conditions, and animal rights. All this he did well over two hundred years ago. As I always say, he was a gentleman as well as a genius. He was such a profound person. It is believed he was autistic. A sensitive and sentimental soul, he liked to name his belongings. One of his walking sticks was named Dapple, and I named my wheelchair the same in honour of him. Most people know him for what was done with his head after his death, but I know and love him for what he did with it during his lifetime. He was and continues to be a true inspiration.

I have an issue Caitlyn. You taught me about Bentham's head. Now I'm studying him in philosophy and Every. Single. Time. My. Teacher. Says. Bentham. I. Hear. I see Jerry (Bentham) every time I'm on campus (previously in Wilkins, now in the Student Centre) and it makes me very happy. Also: yes apologies for the name misspelling

UCL student here - it isn't a proper day at UCL if you don't walk past and see Jeremy. He's been moved recently though; he's now in a glass case in the middle of our main study space building! Something really weird that's totally normal for us!

Yesterday my kiddo got to watch the older kids in her school put on a play about the Egyptians and mummies. She came home and was pretty scared of mummies and I thought "TEACHING MOMENT!" I told her that they used all the beautiful sarcophagus to honor their dead. That they did it to show how they cared about those who had died. She suddenly became very interested in them. Death positivity for the win!

My and my partner watched this when it first came out. Well, we were in the car when suddenly he just said "Benthams Head" randomly and honestly, I could see the little pop out in my mind, just in the lower left of my vision. We both died laughing. Thank you for the fun.

I spent a semester working at the print collection located right next to where he was being displayed. I got to see him every time I went to the restroom. I also met a woman who used to share her office with him before he was put out in the hall for display. Imagine having him as an office mate.

He died at home in his bed and its only because of you that i knew what to expect. Being a UCL student, I pass Bentham's head every day, and it's weirdly endearing. Best part, snapchat face filters recognise his face, and Bentham with pink bunny ears is one of the most morbidly adorable things I've ever seen

I was in UCL’s sci-fi and fantasy society and we used to play board games every Wednesday in a room right down the hall from Bentham’s body. Occasionally his cupboard would be open, and I had no idea of most of this stuff at the time!

Jeremy Bentham is my hero, from when I was a child, and before I knew about his corpse on display. He became one of my heroes when I read his quote about animal rights... "The question is not can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But can they suffer?" Add to that all the other amazing philosophies - how could you not love this guy.

We were always told that Bentham gets wheeled out for big meetings, where he is registered as 'present but not voting'. And that if there was ever a motion with a 50/50 split in results, Bentham would also 'vote' in favour, meaning there were never any hung decisions.

when i first found out about this my favourite part of the was he is meant to attend all uni meetings and is included on the attendance form as attended but abstained from voting.

Bentham's head was already packed away and kept separately from his body in 1987 when I went for my college interview, so I think we can rule out the '90's :)

When I studied at UCL as part of my grad program, Bentham was one of the first things our program sponsor brought us to see. Seriously, we got our school IDs then Bentham. We all loved it of course, but it was so cool to see how much warmth and affection all the people at the school have for him!

HiCaitlyn ( I hope that’s the right spelling) I’m in Houston right now at my grandfathers funeral. And on the way down I had the “death talk” with my parents. It happened totally naturally too! My parents told me what they want me and my siblings to do when they die and it’s actually really sweet! My family has this connection with a lake in east Texas and my parents want their ashes spread out their. I thought that was really sweet and perfect for our family. Also while I’m in Houston my grandfathers funeral has been LIT That may sound weird but it’s true. I get to see all 7 of my aunts and uncles and all 20 of my cousins. I was up until 2 am listening to stories about my grandfather and how he was when they were growing up. I thought u should share this.

I ended up showing this to my college professor for Ethics class since we learned about Jeremy Bentham and Utilitarianism. And he ended up posting it as entertainment material.

Love this video - it really made me laugh! As a former student at UCL, I enjoyed seeing Jeremy whenever I was in his building, and would say a chirpy "hello Jez!" to him whenever I passed. I'm sure he would have been happy to know that generations of students have enjoyed knowing him :)

Every once in a while I come back to this video to reexperience Bentham’s Head for the first time all over again.

Caitlin is seriously my favorite person ever. I play these videos while i clean, go grocery shopping, and on break at work. I have an intense fear of my own mortality and her calm voice is slowly helping me cope with my phobia.
