Award-winning author Howard Blum just released a new book examining the deaths of four University of Idaho students and the eventual arrest of Bryan Kohberger. Blum claims Kohberger specifically targeted one of the victims living at the off-campus home in 2022. The victim's family is calling his claim "fiction." As Kohberger’s defense team and Latah County prosecutors prepare for trial, Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber sits down with Blum to discuss the book’s release and analyze the author’s theories about the brutal stabbings.

Law and Crime is full of speculation before and after trials have concluded. They even seem to speculate on facts that were already proven in court, but I don't think they care. They just want the clicks... innocent until proven guilty is one of the most important factors of our judicial system, and a channel providing law and trial coverage should know that. It's unbelievable. I usually just watch trial coverage and ignore the other videos, but I had to click to see if anyone else had the same thoughts I did about this...

I guess you missed the part where he stated he talked to people involved in the case and who know Kohberger. The cops were surveiling Kohberger and saw him clean the car, throw the trash in the neighbor's garbage, and he was wearing medical gloves to the store. Don't let the facts get in the way.

Even the Goncalves' family has criticized Blum's book, calling it a version of events "made up by him relying on sources that have no responsibility or duty to speak the truth." They said it was "just another book and another dollar to be made" about the deaths of four young students.

@@exitscreaming4637 I have no idea who his actual target was, but the victims posted a final photo of themselves gathered on a front porch and posted it to social media, which BK could have seen, thus knowing Kaylee was in town the night of the attack. Also, the surviving roommate said she first heard what sounded like Kaylee playing with her dog then said outloud "someone is here". But the dog was found in Kaylee's room while she was with Maddie in her room. Could it have been BK going to Kaylees room first and upon finding the dog went to the next bedroom (Maddie)? Alternatively, I remember a big wooden letter M right in Maddie's bedroom window which could be seen from the side street, revealing exactly where her bedroom was located. Either girl could have been the main target imo. Or possibly both.

Exactly. He’s seen certain facts, he’s seen things that are going to show up. There’s reasons he has certain things in the book. His theory seems valid. Whether the theory is correct who knows only the killer truly knows. But like he said it’s about remembrance of the kids, and how the cops caught the guy. Not everyone is going to like the book and it’s been said the family doesn’t and I get it but still. How is this different than a RU-vidr going on their channel and talking about the case and theories that aren’t proven? At least he actually talked to people and did his actual research in order to come up with the theory he did. Again honestly the only person who truly knows what was in the sick mind of the killer is the killer

Gag orders don’t stop people from expressing their opinion- there would likely be a disclaimer at the front of the book to protect him - dude has been in the industry his whole life he’d have lawyers ensuring he didn’t cross a line and no publisher would back a book that violated a gag order. 😊

How does this guy know that Kohberger didn't try Kaylee's room first and found no one but the dog? The surviving roommate said she heard what sounded like Kaylee playing with her dog, but the dog was in Kaylee's room during the crime. Maybe it was Kohberger walking into Kaylee's room first? Who knows. Point is this guy doesnt, either.

How on earth did you hear this? He condemns what he did and agrees he did it. It is bizarre to kill 4 kids and not the other. It is a reasonable hypothesis. More info is helpful. For as much as the gag order prevents him naming sources - it's ethical journalism

The best theory is that this guy developed a very strong hatred towards young pretty women because he was prone to rejection by them. That hate towards young pretty girls was his driver to kill in revenge. So it happened that Ethan was there, and he hated him too for having what he couldn't have. He murdered them all, except for the two survivors that he didn't kill because he was out of time as planned to reduce his risk of being caught. It's my theory by the way!

How about you do your job as a reporter and ask whether his profits will go towards the victims families of this crime. And if he is confident the evidence will back up his claims in this book or if he is profiting on lies. I don’t think this guy spent months criss-crossing the country talking to people involved in this case just to write a work of fiction. Could’ve done that from the comfort of his own home. Wouldn’t be surprised if this book turns out to be more accurate than people want to give him credit for. However, the timing and seemingly profiting off tragedy is not a great look.

A lot of people have their own theories on what happened that night. I'm still concerned about why all the people were at the house for hours before calling the police. I'm currently reading the book and his intro explains this and even the end brings up the fact that he spoke to a lot of people. He mentioned that people were trying to sell him info too tho he denies paying for any interviews.

I dated a guy in college that seems VERY similar to Kohberger - Right now, I believe BK did this. So many red flags that “normal” people wouldn’t recognize without having intimately known someone (seemingly) like this. He planned this and is much more intelligent/conniving than the public realizes

This made me feel icky. When the author said he wrote the book for people to “enjoy” I cringed. I can’t help but think about the students family who this story is an ongoing reality for them. I know it’s not unusual to write historical fictions however the timing feels insensitive.

If his family was suspicious, it makes sense why the father flew across the country and returned home by car. I always wondered why B didn't just fly home for the holidays. They needed to get the car out of the area and get rid of it. Perhaps B registered the car in Washington at that time to get new license plates in case the PA plate could be identified. If the family was suspicious, as difficult as it would have been, they should have done the right thing and turned in their son/brother.

They are having a hard time finding jury members for this case and I believe this book will muddy the waters and complicate things in this case imo the book should have been released after the trial

There is dodgy "evidence" with both the trace DNA and the phone records and the investigation. Speculation before his fair trial is not appropriate.

He’s selfish for releasing such unsubstantiated claims before the trial especially when there’s a current gag order. The defense has already tried to use the “all the jurors will have bias because of the media coverage” angle and he’s fueling the fire.

unpopular opinion but this author hasn't written anything about the case that is not public knowledge. even his conclusion is something many other reporters have speculated about. he just used a narrative to tie it together. he's quite open about the fact that these are just his own thoughts and research. I bought the book when it came out on Tuesday.
