Following up, they also had a sort of diplomatic immunity so they could make fun of the ruling class as a sort of "this is how my people see me" or to point out absurd actions to keep the rulers grounded. It's the contrast of expectation vs. reality. That's why Rowan Atkinsson can dress up as a priest and read a moderately entertaining story and make everyone laugh. The contrast amplifies the jokes to epic levels.
