I’m starting to believe that tradescantia is your arch-enemy. 😂 Lovely plant. And it rewarded you with flowers! Put some cuttings in semi hydro the next time you take cuttings. I promise you that the leaf shedding will drastically decrease (that’s if you don’t forget to refill the reservoir)

I have my cuttings which came off mother plant in semi hydo and its now bushier than the mother plant and yes the leaves arnt going brown and stems are healtier at the base. Im going to plant the mother into semi hydro at some point as it likes it so much.

Such a timely video! Just did a repot of mine in my kitchen windowsill, (very rootbound and leggy/crispy) put the cuttings in the smaller pot on the windowsill. I think i should have given it a harder prune than I did, so the clippers are coming back out😂

With some shrubs it's advised to cut back one third of the stems each year to encourage new stems from the base of the shurb and to keep it looking bushy. I wonder if somthing similar could be done here. Cutting back to the base a few of the most straggly stems rather than all at once.

@@keriwallace2022 it is substrate that you can put plants in that contains zeolite,pumice, lava rock and a fertilizer. A German company makes a popular brand name lechuza-pon but lots of companies and individuals make their own diy version. I find it does well for smaller rooted plants.

I'm all for letting some of my plants grow like they want to like my two very bushy sheffleras/umbrella plants. Some plants like the Tradescantia will need to be cut back or it will be a pain in your bum if grown indoors. Thank you for this. I am now considering doing this with my Tradescantia (zebrina tricolor I think - I bought it off Etsy and that's what the seller said, but I have a regular T zebrina that looks much thicker and bigger leaves so I don't know.) It resembles a Callisia repens pink lady but much darker pink and pink stems and bigger leaves than the C repens. It's a sad looking plant either way, hanging over the side of the pot looking like it wants to die. I took several cuttings because I thought it might die. It perked up since then but still not looking healthy. It has a huge root ball and is in a 6 inch pot but what you see on top is localized in the middle and hangs off one side. I'm still pretty new to plants and the thought of cutting them all off kinda scares me. I wish I could upload a picture of it because I'd love your feedback. It has the potential to be so beautiful, but it looks so sad. Anyways, thank you again for the video and I hope you have a great day!

The funny thing is that I have found photos of utterly massive trailing Tradescantias in pots, I wonder if high humidity helps them thrive without soil to cling to... also, just like other species belonging to the same families, that have reasonably different varieties, I have both what I believe to be a Nanouk and a Zebrina "Deep Purple" and while the former is a reasonably slow, heavy, droopier, large leaf grower, the latter bears much smaller leaves and tends to reach upwards with a lot more vigour, and I have had to pinch her a handful of times during this growing season in order to keep it in check. I do tend to prefer the bushier, more aggressive growth patterns, but they are both a stunner in their own right.
@SheffieldMadePlants

Definitely if you can get them to grow right they’re great

Hi! I have been watching most of your videos, they have been super helpful 😊. Question for you; two of my varieties (Zebrina and Albiflora) have declined in size and I can’t figure out why. The stems and leafs are significantly smaller and thinner, half the size or smaller than when I first got them (2-3 years ago). Also, the color of my Albiflora hardly has any of the white variegation in the leafs. I know the color converted from too much sunlight. They still grow fast though. Last year my Albiflora got extremely root-bound, the worst Iv ever seen in any of my plants. I basically killed it trying to save it. But it came back (like you mention in your video) with stunted growth. I even took clippings and started a new plant, moved it to a lower light area, still no change. I live in NC and it’s very humid here. Any thoughts or tips? Thank you!
@Annette0249
@Annette0249 Год назад
Also, when I chopped all the stems to propagate trying to save it, the stems and leafs were still thick and big, and the new growth that came out of those cuttings were thin and small.

Does anyone know why the leaves on tradescantia have these brown spots or places where the leaves are like if they were eaten by some bugs (although I am quite sure mine does not have thrips or else)? I saw the same thing on the plant in the video. The leaves are not perfect, have some miniature holes. Does this usually happen?
