that last line about social norms being a stack of lies. This isn't totally true. Some real truths are encoded or encompassed by social norms. For example, judging all traits of somebody based on their appearance is obviously "wrong" scientifically speaking, but it's right statistically speaking. If you're successful, you general attract and attractive mate, and then you have attractive children, who are likely to be successful since you were successful. Therefore, judging if someone will be successful based on looks has some basis and encodes a truth about the world.

Not sure if you can judge Truths off of social constructs, "Cringe" to me can occur even when the person is conventionally attractive. For instance, the "reality" and "truth" of the minds of Rice Gum, Jake Paul, and the Kardashians is one of Narcissistic and other personality disorders, but according to you they're "truth seeking realists" instead of "cringe-inducing Sociopaths".

Many people seem to correlate nihilism and pesimism with being "smart" and "realistic" while being corny, emotional, empatic, pasionate or just positive is seem by them as "childish" and "inmature" and therefore "cringe" Imo i have hated that fucking word since it's inception and i will never ever use it seriously or for other reason than academic purposes, let people be and do whatever the fuck they want as long as they arent injuring themselves or others it's not that big of a deal you can see this attitude in many people, I have straight up encountered some people who legitimately believe that being negative about everything and always expecting the worse of every situation is being "realistic" which is a geniunly stupid take, you can also see this attitude in plenty of series like Rick and Morty (i like the series but hate it's nihilist view)

Much of what gets labelled "cringe" is just sincerity. Someone expressing genuine passion (especially for something outside of the social norm) is given that label by people who maintain a persona of being "cool". Their indifference is a defense mechanism, because they are afraid of being "cringe". Or at least that's my understanding.

Agreed that reality and social reality are often disjointed, and that to confirm to social norms you might distance yourself from things others (with the social high ground) find cringy / disgusting. The truth (IMO) is that people are social creatures and have to live in both social and actual reality. The trick is to find your tribe where your social and actual reality are aligned and you can be accepted for who you are. And also accepting that you may need to adapt to fit in there as well, as no two humans have exactly the same set of social expectations.

Cringe culture is just a self-defeating system where you can move the goalposts wherever you want and can be manipulated by anyone. For example if someone says your thing is cringe? You can just say "it's cringe to call things cringe" and suddenly they are the one feeling stupid, esp if they enjoy cringe culture. As a social construct it only has power when you care about it. It's arbitrary and meaningless, as everybody can decide what is cringe and what isn't. It's also weird how the majority has more deciding power on what counts as "cringe" than an individual, but if it's just 1 on 1, both people have the same amount of power to label things as cringe. Guess that illustrates just how ridiculous this communal form of insecurity really is. Most people and communities involved in cringe culture are just people at the bottom of a perceived social pyramid looking to bully others so they can feel like they're ontop or at least not the target of social rejection. Its the same logic as in highschool: make fun of other people to distract from your own flaws. Anyone who ""cringes"" at something likely feels threatened by the thing in question, esp if they begin to shame or bully others for it. Either way these types of people are always too concerned with social hierarchy.
@mosshotep

This conflates social reality with social media. Also one can and sometimes should abandon things they love given a certain social response, even from a personal point of view as conforming to a social reality has its own benefit. There are a lot more repercussions than simply being cringe. Good points about confidence, and people's evaluation tho.

Though in general I completely agree with the general idea that we should pursue truth no matter what preconceived notions of it we or society at large have about it, the problem with that idea is that "the pursuit of truth even in the face of social backlash" can lead to a toxic mindset called masochistic epistemology. Basically, the belief that because your opinion is getting social backlash it must be the truth. A good example of this is the trans rights debate going on right now. Most science and academic literature out right now supports the affirmative model of treatment (Treating trans people as the gender they claim to be rather than the one they were assigned at birth). These treatments have generally great outcomes, very few anti-depression treatments work as well as medical transition does for trans people for example. And more and more evidence piles up every year suggesting that transness is more likely to be a sort of psychiatric intersex phenomenon rather than a psychological delusion. Nevertheless, most anti trans activists see themselves as brave truth tellers in the face of social backlash. using simplistic arguments based in "basic biology" to, in their mind at least, cut through the social pressure to confirm to societal norms and find the real truth: "if pp than man, if vajayjay than women". They think that, because this statement isn't what transpeople want to hear, it must be the truth, because the truth hurts/is cringe. The fact that most of the science surrounding trans people disagrees with them is in their mind only the result of those scientists refusing to look at the obvious truth due to social pressures. the mindset of "the pursuit of truth even in the face of social backlash" is pushing these people further and further into untruth.
@RationalAnimations
@RationalAnimations 2 года назад
Beautiful comment. The key here is that being a contrarian doesn't automatically guarantee that you hold the truth. But if you always look for truth, then you will likely be a contrarian at least on a few topics. "Every improvement is a change, but not every change is an improvement". If there is some group that says "I hold the truth, and I'm going against social norms" that doesn't automatically make that group correct. You need to actually evaluate the claim they are making in detail. There's no shortcut.
@ashb712
@ashb712 2 года назад
Thank you!!! I was thinking exactly this while watching the whole video. Many professional and prestigious scientific organizations all agree that gender & sex are spectrums and that transness is a natural part of the human experience, not a delusion, mental disease, or disorder. Yet even with these discoveries, many people still attempt to discredit or outright refuse to acknowledge the decades of scientific research gone into the subject due to personal bias and lack of education on the subject, even though they are literally arguing with assessments made by The World Health Organization, the American Psychology Association, and countless others. As a result, transness and trans people are still made out to be ""cringe"" and are shunned despite having the objective truth of genuine scientific research and the backing of trusted scientific foundations further validating the concepts and the movement. Being trans (and anything lgbt+) is a prime example of when seeking truth and personal happiness is absolutely greater than seeking social acceptance. Instead of "ugliness", it's a lack of knowledge on the subject that is the greatest contributor to the ""cringe"" factor here, as people shun and "other" anything that is different. Proper representation and education for the public is all too important for changing public image of social minority groups. You can look at "nerd culture" as a great example. Anime, Star Trek, Star Wars, DnD, etc used to be "cringey" social reject hobbies, but with new media representing and popularizing these things, nerd culture became mainstream. Now everyone plays DnD, watches anime, cosplays, goes to conventions, watches star wars content, etc. The same thing is being done for sexuality. There is significantly more gay, bi, etc representation now than there was 20+ years ago, and the idea of queerness being seen as "cringe" is slowly fading.

There is indeed a scientific consensus among biologists that there are only two sexes in most animal species, including humans. For biologists, "male" means having a disposition to produce small gametes, "female" means having a disposition to produce large gametes. Sperms and eggs in case of mammals. There is no third gamete size. The "sex is a spectrum" position is consensus in different fields, such as Gender studies. The question is which field you trust more.
@chillinchum
@chillinchum Год назад
@@cube2fox where does that put intersex people then? I don't mean trans (although they will certainly use that identity), I mean the people who were born with a Mishmash of both. @johannaderee4763
@johannaderee4763 Год назад
@@cube2fox you are 100% wrong. Gender is a spectrum is the position of gender studies. Sex is a spectrum is the position of biologists. And it is a spectrum, even in humans. Reducing sex to just gamete size is reductive, largely unhelpful in a scientific sense, and generally only used by butt-hurt people of a certain political persuasion to protect their precious feelings against the fact that life is more complicated than a simple binary. sex is a bimodal distribution of characteristics often shared including but not limited to gametes, certain genes, the endocrine system and some physical traits. the idea of sex as being a simple binary simply does not fit the understanding of modern science

How do you know you are looking at reality itself. Might sources or your own thought process be b(i)ased? You can never know 100% you are right. Many people think they are following truth but believe contradictory things, maybe they are influenced by their society/culture/environment but isn't everyone. You must get at least the basis for ideas for somewhere. Even belief in scientific method is societal, and so is which studies you see talked about.

To best reach truth you do need outside feedback and an openness to criticism. But that is a completely different thing than giving in to society's scorn. The scorn may or may not be based in reason, but the majority of times it is not, and the cringe alone is not what should change your mind, but rather the argument presented by a person with a contradictory belief. But even then, you can never 100% know you are right, even if you 99.9999999% know you are right. That is just one of the unfortunate things about life.

I agree that it’s important to attempt to distance your judgements from social judgements. To not take “because that’s the way things are” as an answer. That said, weeaboo isn’t just a derogatory term for “anime lover”. It specifically refers to someone showing signs of poor judgement, like that watching anime has given a better understanding of the world or Japan, or makes them approximately ethnically Japanese. Fiction inspired delusion of any kind is unhealthy. I think it’s important to question whether your sense of shame is justified, but not to throw it away entirely, as it’s a part of your brain that helps understand social interactions. Also anyone who calls themselves an “anime lover” is coming across just as bland and tasteless as a “TV lover” or “book lover”. At least narrow it down to a genre or author or production studio.
@Pyrohawk
@Pyrohawk 2 года назад
I'm not sure I agree with your deduction about weeabs. The reason the weeabs are cringe isn't because they're fat, it's because they're *embarassing*. Some cringe comes from disdain, yes, but some cringe comes from empathy; "second hand embarassment". They're cringe because what they are doing is essentially wallowing in being antisocial and outcast. Seeing a homeless person asking for money, for example, is not cringe; we recognize they are at the bottom, but otherwise can understand them. But if a homeless person is trying to get money by courting random women, it's cringe, because they are violating social norms in an embarassing way, and we can imagine ourselves doing that and theoretically looking back at our actions in disgust. In my opinion, what makes weeabs cringe, isnt being weeabs; its that they act embarassingly. Maybe due to their confidence, but its not due to them - its due to the immediate action, which is what makes it "cringey"; "cringe" is a reaction, not a feeling.
@ellis4752
@ellis4752 2 года назад
exactly. Tik Tok is cringe because people do stupid, humiliating, and sometimes dangerous stuff for the sake of fame. It's rather the mad fantasy in which they live which is cringe. I am a weaboo, i like anime, but what i call "cringe" those who are "swallowed" in anime, because it is unhealthy. Sure uglyness is not attractive, but the links between health and beauty are intimate and results from accordance with reality.

Physical attractiveness advantage might be bias with the highest effect to awareness ratio in our society. It doesn't seem to work in systematic ways (like racism causes laws and living locations) but more on individual action level. The 'goal' of this bias appears to be to keep unattractive people out of the visible society and degrade them to viewers and listeners. It is very sad how much of our daily life is influenced by it and how no one seems to be aware. And it's hard to combat as physical unattractiveness in a complete taboo and would never be mentioned by name.

Plus, internet dynamics are probably relatable to a YT audience. Should I worry that using them as examples would make my videos cringe in the eyes of a sophisticated audience? Well, maybe but... I prefer to defy social rules rather than accept them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires, but I observed that when it works, the payoff is usually very high. Plus, it's fun.

To cringe at something you must see yourself in it. It's like seeing something you know is deep down inside you that you are trying to convince yourself isn't.

While it's hard to deny that attractiveness has an impact on one's life in terms of social interaction, I feel like your associations with ugliness to cringe are off base. I also think there is some strong assumptions made from the correlation between ugliness and social perception. We don't cringe at people for what they look like necessarily. Cringe develops from a clash of our understanding of social consequences vs. our perception of another's understanding. Some examples: -someone making a grand romantic gesture towards an individual who clearly isn't interested in them might elicit cringe -someone trying way too hard for something that no one thinks is important -someone who thinks they look intimidating to folks when they don't -someone who invokes topics considered inappropriate with strangers unironically Those who consume television regularly has likely experienced much cringe on the behalf of attractive folks. Arrested Development and Parks and Recreation supply good examples of this I believe. In addition, it can be assumed from observation that those who are unattractive will be perceived to have deficiencies in other socially categorized personal traits (i.e. intelligence, kindness, honesty, skill, efficiency, diligence, interesting, etc.). This can bring improved outcomes for those who are attractive and lack in these categories. However, humans are social animals and much of their long term judgements are the result of direct or proxied social interaction. Assumptions don't carry once contradicted by experience. You can see cultural references of this in memes such as "himbo/bimbo" who are assumed to be attractive but unintelligent or boring and "nerd becomes your boss" in an unattractive but intelligent individual finding better success than a jock. Great video overall, as people often avoid being cringy to the point of even downplaying their own interests or beliefs. It's great to point out that what is true is not necessarily in line with what is accepted, and if you value truth you should strive to accept being cringed over. Still, having a good understanding of what causes cringe can allow those who seek truth to analyze why X thing makes others cringe and what it may mean in regards to the truth.

You know what's really cringe? Bending over backwards to appease the judgements of those around you in order to position yourself higher on a socially constructed hierarchy. Also it's important not to take from this video that seeking truth and being true to yourself will necessarily cause you to be ostracized, and that should not be used as a goalpost. Seeking truth and being true to yourself may even make you popular in some circles. The point is that you don't care about the social hierarchy at all when it comes to truth.

In the instances wherein the truth is economically unfavorable, what does one do. If social pressure not to seek truth implies that one could lose money, status, power, or potential for life chances should one submit? What if it's just a little difference in utility that makes truth slightly more effective?

I put a massive difference between cringe and the social norms of the average constituent of society. The truth is fundamentally based, cringe is what happens when it is misrepresented, oversimplified, or completely neglected in favor of social bullshit. Watching television is cringe, but everyone does it. Apple is cringe, but it's the biggest computer company.

Speak the truth you say, eh? Well I would quite like to, but I would also much prefer to be able to continue going to school, not be harassed, stolen from, and physically harmed, had job opportunities and business stripped from me. When I have enough that I can support myself with less of other people then I may truly speak freely, but as of for now, in where I live, with how hostile my environment is to people like me, I have no option but to shut up and buy time

I disagree, there are very attractive people that do very cringe stuff, and I disagree that the main factor is attractiveness, it’s mostly stupidity, the lack of self respect, general weirdness, attention seeking behaviour, etc that make people cringe… E.g Take furries, brownies, and some of these so called “weebs” etc.. these are grown adults with fetishes for stuffed animals and cartoons, how tf do you expect a sane person to react to that? In whatever way you see it this is not normal behaviour both under medical terms or not, and evolution has rightly so designed us to deviate from such things by making us cringe and disgusted. It’s a free country, so do whatever tf you want, but don’t expect the world to pretend and dwell-in in your fantasies. Like where do we draw the line between a medically insane person/ behaviour and what these people are doing? So when the girl at the psychiatric hospital believes the teddy bear is her bf, we all agree she is insane, but when some weirdo says a pillow is his wife we are supposed to pretend that he is perfectly sane and it’s “creativity and expression” ! Get outta here!
@MrCmon113
@MrCmon113 Год назад
Do you know what insane people do? They get an idea and then they confabulate a justification out of thin air. Because they don't realize that the idea is just an idea. So, you cringe. And that HAS to have rational explanation, right? It can't just be your mind coming up with stuff. No. It's a universal, cosmical, transcended truth that they are cringe. Satisfied that you have gained such insight you pity the insane people.

TL:DR I like it a lot but 'dah truf' isn't well defined by the author. Without that definition, this way of thinking could make people double down on hate if their truth is hate. 6.5/11 too much citrus. I really appreciate most everything said in this video. But I gotta ask, what does the writer mean when they say truth seeker and truths of the world? I keep wanting to think you're talking about something broadly socio-political based on the tone and the wording, but the rest of the video is about being true to one's self and feelings regardless of expressed disgust. When you marry those ideas, use phrases like 'truths of the world' and 'truth seeker' without any real definition, imply cringing is a behavior purely for the sake of establishing superiority, and suddenly it feels like I'm hearing you say this: if you believe in something and you're convicted it's the truth (even if it's not and you may be given evidence of this) you should ignore those around you because sometimes 'the truth' is so just that hard to take and you're a 'truth seeker' who knows 'the truth' so why could you be wrong? And also anime is ok. What truths, queer/color based suppression? Or fully debunked and hateful shit people call truth, like "aah it's 'them', trans people arent real, equal rights take muh freedoms"? Who are we calling truth seekers? This feels like a super dangerous way of thinking if you believe in debunked conspiracy and/or with anything purely because it's socio-politically left or right of you... unless you define truth. People of all political backgrounds have used ''''truth''' to disguise bullshit well before we ever heard the term alternative facts. Like I said, I really enjoy alot of what's in this video, so I hope I'm misunderstanding what the writer intended.
