When beliefs become identities, truth-seeking becomes hard

Today, we cover a section of Julia Galef's book "The Scout Mindset". She warns against treating your beliefs as part of your identity because they will interfere with truth-seeking: you will seek to protect your beliefs and engage in wars of ideas, adopting what she calls a "soldier mindset" rather than choosing to keep or discard your beliefs based on the facts you encounter (the "scout mindset"). She identifies two ways in which beliefs become identities: feeling embattled and feeling proud. Finally, she suggests "holding your identity lightly" and adopting a truth-seeker identity.

Everyone that I've known imagines that they are truth seekers and that they care about truth, so it might have been good to mention here that Julia defines truth seeking and the scout mindset in terms of concrete concepts such as Baysian reasoning and the like. So her recommendation is distinctly different from the sentiment of wanting truth that most people hold. The book helps enlighten the reader to where they fail as truth seekers and how to improve.

Kinda reminds me of self-fulfilling prophecy- if you believe that you are a failure that can do nothing, you become a failure that can do nothing. The odd thing about this is that, even if you happen to be right in your assessment if being a failure that can do nothing, you have to delude yourself into believing that you’re not to be able to do anything. Basically, you know how those extreme Democrats, Republicans, and Vegans believe in things so hard that they attempt to unify with them and actually twist the world to obey them? Do that. (Note: The Republicans are actually a “good” example of this- they managed to overturn abortion in the states they dominate in. While I don’t agree with it, it’s still impressive.)

That seems to have been the loss which has made such a hash of discourse on the web and in the world. You must be respectful if you wish to convince someone to change their mind. Yet so much of discourse is not about changing minds, but preforming an expression of identity via opposition. An activity that is enjoyable to the one doing it (at least in theory) but accomplishes no good for the others involved.

This is exactly wrong. There are mountains and mountains of evidence that anti-truth-seeking behavior is more common, or even arguably fundamental, on the right wing. Failing to point that out is the great mistake of this video, and your comment proves how harmful that is and how easily a viewer (e.g. you) can misapply this video to reconfirm your own pre-existing "anti-politics" bias, which is an inherently anti-truth-seeking framework.

@@EASYANSWERS if you equate the broad identity label of "right wing politicians" with the broad wing identity label "anti-truth seeking behavior" i feel like you missed the whole point of the video... Sure, conservative individuals might be less open to new ideas (by definition), but If truth is the goal, you have to ask yourself "which solutions get you closer to the truth" If you think "identifying with left wing politics" is one of those solutions, i challenge you to find a more procedural solution, rather than one based on an identity label.

The problem is that people can claim the "scout identity" as a way to dismiss others by saying "I'm the TRUE truth seeker, unlike you", and never listen to anything outside their own head.
@rivetace
@rivetace 2 года назад
Claiming an identity and defending it is the essence of the soldier identity. The way to identify a true scout is that they only loosely hold on to their identity and are willing to doubt it, question it or change it, or ignore it in favor of talking about the topic of discussion.
@sigmata0
@sigmata0 Год назад
This is a solution intended to move the absolutest towards including evaluating evidence in their reasoning once again if they've decided there is no more need to attend to evidence at all (or simply filter evidence according to what they already decided the "truth" is, ignoring all else). If someone is already absolute in their belief they will always be a staunch defender of their position (identity) regardless of the "truth". For me the term "truth" lends itself too easily to absolutist positions because it implies we can know something for certain. What we get to know in practice is an assessment of some claim made about the world being consistent with the model we have of the world. The greater the inconsistency the more pressure there is to change the model to accommodate the inconsistency so that it "makes sense" within the model. This can, from time to time, mean a radical change to the model of the world in use. Obviously not to be undertaken lightly as such a change requires a reevaluation of all other claims made, i.e. what some evidence means with respect to the model of the world in general and whether it's still consistent with the model of the world you have. It's easy to get into the position where we don't see value in changing the model of the world any more and thereby the usefulness of evidence drops to zero.

Interesting video and while I mostly agree, there comes a problem with people have identities based in beliefs become embattled with people who have identities that aren't based on beliefs. A racist has an identity based on the belief that certain racial groups are superior to other racial groups, usually to their own benefit. The person who says "I am ethnic group X" is having a different sort of identity assertion than the person who says "I am a person who believes X is inferior." The position that one group is superior or not is a philosophical position, but the position that you are part of a group is (more or less) a factual statement. You see this again with homophobia. "I'm not homophobic, I just believe in natural marriage." vs. "I am gay.". One is a philosophical position, which frames the debate as a merely philosophical debate vs. the other being a position based in what they perceive as a factual statement. As said in the video, it would be important not to make such philosophical positions embattled because if you do, the holders would become more deeply entrenched. The problem is that it just isn't possible for the groups involved not to be embattled as a person who bases their identity on harming another group will always face hostility from that group. You'd have to necessarily ask the group being harmed not to be mad, which seems morally ambiguous. The only way forward would be for the wider public to intervene in a way that doesn't shun the people with philosophical beliefs that a group is inferior.

That's actually a good point! Our beliefs form our identity, and people who have a strong sense of self, or EGO are often prone to being stubborn... Learning how to hack your identity at the core level is key... We wanna be sovereign individuals with free will, and not be pushovers, but we have to balance it with the needs and desires of others. Then of course we end up with Karl Popper's "Paradox of tolerance" which states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant.

So I'm kind of confused - if you let your identity become that of "the scout mindset" so much that it's a belief, and therefore feel superior because you're thinking "I'm not a soldier, I'm a scout" all the time, isn't it a bit paradoxical?
@Alexman208GR
@Alexman208GR 2 года назад
It's not a paradox per se, but it can happen. It's the ego of not having an ego and it's a trap some people definitely fall into. The trick is to be fully transparent with yourself, self reflect and improve your skill at recognizing your inner feelings/thoughts. The detail is to notice when you feel superior. So by noticing it you can notice when you're using your identity of not having an identity in a bad way. Ultimately you must not feel superior to anyone, even if they identify strongly with something you consider bad. But that's much easier said than done. Old habits die hard so just learning about identities and how they can be harmful isn't enough to dissolve a habit. That stuff takes time and effort.

Well I think it would only become a problem in the real world if you let your scout identity prevent you from engaging with soldiers. Once you take the mindset of its pointless to talk with someone who will never change their mind this becomes a self fulfilling profacy. People can change their mind no matter how deep in they've gotten. It takes a lot of patience and time with people that don't belittle you. Even if you won't change someone's mind engage any way. Get their point of view, give them yours, understand them. Even if you don't feel like they've made any progress you've made progress by getting a more accurate and complete view of a person with this beliefs

I really like the fact that you brought pro-vax/anti-vax as an example. It's both relevant and in case of being either pro or anti vax, it's purely based on belief of that person. What I find problematic with that approach is when the conflict IS about identity. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for people to demean others in the name of truth-seeking, while discussing sexuality, race, nationality. From what I observed what happened in Poland in recent years is exactly what you explained in this video. Before our government started to spread anti-LGBT propaganda, which resulted in a violent attack on a pride parade in Białystok, unsuccessful bomb attack on another and announcing municipalities as LGBT free zones; it only strengthened identity aspect of the group, but on the other hand I feel that it also 'westernized' the movement, in terms of being it more like SJW movement, which previously we observed mostly remotely. So what I find challenging in this situation is how to act accordingly, when the problems are very tangible and real, affects real people and the problems are about identities. It's challenging to be open and understanding, while at the same time be assertive and supportive.

The real niggle here is that when some other person's beliefs are an actual attack on your actual identity. For instance, when you belong to a minority and the other person holds some belief that your minority should be exterminated by all means available. It's hard to approach ideas with a scout mindset when they actually threaten your existence. There are some identities that are forced on us by society, rather than chosen. Like gender identity or race. And yes, I understand that you can technically choose a different gender identity, but I would argue that in most cases, a) this is not so much a choice as it is a driving imperative b) society can still force a different gender identity upon you, through misgendering, deadnaming and other abuses. This is exactly why those things are as harmful as they are and the need to transition is so great. We have a need to pass, to make sure society stops forcing the wrong identity on us. With these identities that we cannot choose, a belief that is an actual threat to them is not an idea in a debate, it's a bullet shot at our heads, and I for one, refuse to tell anyone to be reasonable about that. If you're a nazi, and people attack nazis, you can escape harm by abandoning your nazi beliefs and ceasing to be a nazi. If you're disabled and they round up disabled people to put in the concentration camps, you do not have this luxury. Now, when it comes to the identities we choose, lifestyle marketing is harmful. This thing where we take the things we like to be and make them our identity, isn't just this funny thing that just happens. Marketing is designed to cause it to happen. It's an unmitigated harm that we must fight, and when it comes to these things, I agree 100% with the video. But it still deserves to be noted that there is a trillion-dollar decentralized (partially grassroots even) propaganda machine working for capitalism working on us from the moment we're born until the moment we die, to incentivize and teach us to make everything we buy, or believe, our identity. Overcoming this, I think necessitates a level of awareness of this fact.

And - of course - who can forget the complicated societal systems that are even worse for someone autistic. Even though I'm comparatively in a good place, my life still once went downhill due to those to the point that I seriously considered suicide. Convincing someone to question their beliefs is so freaking hard. You can make a well thought out factual rational argument and provide proof that their belief is wrong and they'll just dig in their heels even more. One trick I've had moderate success with is this: I start out by finding a kernel of truth in their belief and tell them they're right about that small part of it. Then I tell them I understand why they believe what they believe and make them feel like it wasn't crazy or stupid to have that belief. Then I hit them with the truth and ask them what they think of it. I tell them they don't have to agree with me right away, just listen and give it some thought after I finish. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. I've had people come back to me a few days later and tell me they have changed their minds thanks to our discussion. I love when that happens. It's very rare but it has happened.

For example it might be good to be careful to avoid "false scouthood" including groupthink like "I can't believe X because so many other scouts don't believe it" or "I shouldn't pursue a possibility because so many other scouts believe it isn't worth pursuing"

I believe that the scout mindset and the soldier mindset are two extremes of a spectrum of the human mind. It seems to me that both have advantages and disadvantages, rather than one being superior to the other. For example, my personality traits allow me to be in the scout mindset most of the time, what I call "the philosopher mode," always questioning the world, always curious, always exploring new ideas and possibilities; however, I'm also easily distracted, have disorganized thoughts, and struggle with planning and executing work. I often suffer from analysis paralysis, and I love to think about the complexity of the world, but also feel overwhelmed by it. There are advantages to wanting to see the world as simple, orderly, and structured (even if it really isn't). The soldier mindset is very concerned with the concrete and tangible, as opposed to the scout mindset, which is obsessed with the abstract and ideal. Soldiers are obsessed with goals and missions, and scouts are obsessed with understanding and discovery. There are doers and thinkers in the world, but we need both. The world is great because we have scientists with questions and hunger for new discoveries, but we also have engineers with great and concrete projects and inventions. With identity, the issue is more complicated. I see labels only as tools, meaning that I only identify as something when it's useful to do so, for example to allow someone to understand how I am when it's relevant, but I often struggle when the other person doesn't share my definition or idea of a particular label, so I'm always worried that the other person has preconceptions or prejudices about certain labels I use to describe myself, and I end up explaining what I really mean, making the label redundant. For example, when I was an atheist, I had to clarify that I really wasn't anti-religious and that I considered myself a spiritual person. I also often say I'm gay, even though I'm attracted to women, just so I don't have to explain how bisexual I am and correct common misconceptions about bisexuality. I always ask myself, "Am I really gay?" and the answer is always yes and no. Please note that sexual orientation is an identity that is NOT based on a set of beliefs (this is extremely important), although there are certain beliefs that affect how you live your sexuality.. However, labels allow you to understand where you are in the world (approximately) and allow you to share commonalities with people like you. For example, I find it easier to understand my ADHD because there are people who talk about their ADHD. So my approach to this is to push and pull, to be cyclical, meaning that you can have periods of certainty in your identity, because it's very important to know yourself and have certainty in what you really believe and what you really value, but you can also have periods of self-discovery and introspection where you question your own beliefs, worldview, values, and the labels you use to describe yourself. Like the soldier and the scout mindset, I try to use both (even if I find it easy to use one and hard to use the other) because both are useful in different contexts, at different times, with different people, and during different tasks. Personally, I struggle with having confidence in my identity and having a soldier mindset, so I focus my energy on training myself to be better in those areas.

Humor is a great way to "disarm" this - and also make much easier to bear this moment of feeling uneasy and stupid when someone proves you wrong. People take life too seriously and go to extremes. And you can't blame them. Reality is just magic to us. It feels good to live. It somehow feels - natural - and - logical - to be a stout and strong defender of your beliefs. But look at history and where that got us. Im so glad for this - scout - way of explaining it, really does a good job ! I was always, my whole life really, i was born and raised to make others smile and to always find a way to calm down a heated situation. I thank my mother for that immensely, because it is true. You must hold everything in front of you - and be prepared to just throw it out if it's wrong. Its much easier in life - to always assume first that you are a stupid little idiot and that you might be wrong. But people argument against this - with such a meek attitude you will always appear weak to others, and you are like a little rat who stands for nothing, you will run away from problems etc etc. And then its something stupid like arguing over whats the superior tv show or coke brand. In reality, no one is meek and it goes without saying - that matters that matter, questions of life and death and morals - you dont need any extra motivation or strength when analyzing and argumenting about these things, they are naturally important and we are all always aware of how severe a situation or a topic is. If they throw you in a pit - to fight someone to death - and say : you are fighting this other person to defend your belief that Pepsi is more Tasty than Coke - but this other person is in the pit with you because he fights for his belief - that his people have been discriminated and used as slaves for 5000 years for example - THEN this conviction is truly tested and comes into play. Because you know you are fighting for a really stupid cause compared to this other man in the pit, you will never feel right or motivated enough to both defeat him and also then proceed to kill him. But we are not in a pit. There is no need to be so serious in life. Accept the mystery and be patient, and if god really exists and if he is a good god, he will understand why you choose to be atheist and hug you and say - its ok now. IF he is a evil god then you were right from the start to ignore him, but if you were a worshipper you were giving support to a tyrant and evil. What am i saying here ? Well the second point of mine here is simple - Dont take everything seriously and dont do this - beliefs as identities thingy - from the video : relax, take it easy and slow, dont be lazy and be aware that you will have to learn and read and explore and research your whole life - and for fucks sake stop to smell the flowers and pet the doggo and be kind to others because were in the same mess together, and if you belong to the - might makes right - crowd, well keep in mind that true might is to be vulnerable and to show your weaknesses, true strength is to help others and be selfless !

I think it's exceptionally difficult to choose to change identity or choose to hold these as beliefs instead of identity ... Alllll the neural pathways and thought patterns are ingrained since young. The only time to minimize it is raising young children. I was raised to be open minded and I was raised with what I hold as a modern Christian view and the piece of that relevant here is around being open minded and open to being wrong and open to learning truth. Yet I still have countless things I identify with and if I were to be challenged on them I would battle and think of myself as superior etc... Honestly I'm probably pretty freaking open guy compared to anyone I know but I'm still aware of how much I identify and can be triggered by things that I feel are a personal attack or I believe in! Anyways, just wanted to comment that I think only a smaaall subset of ppl are interested, willing and capable of making the changes suggested herein.

We live in a chaotic world (literally a world with topological mixing within periodic orbits with high sensitivity to initial conditions), which makes true knowledge difficult to obtain. Furthermore, there are numerous epistemological problems that need to be overcome including but not limited to: The problem of induction, the second problem of induction, paradigmatic bias, personal bias, and political and values bias (particularly left-wing bias in the social sciences, as has been noted in several articles). I feel like one complicated distinction to make is identities formed around ways that you are or ways that it's like to be you like gender and race compared with identities formed around what you believe. It becomes even more complicated when identities are formed out of a combination of what it's like to be you and what you believe which may be true especially about gender if gender is socially constructed. Either way this video was super helpful for thinking about my own gender identity. There are definitely facts about myself that I know internally like that I'm most comfortable being feminine, that the closer I get to my ideal body (a mix of male and female traits that leans female) the more well off and comfortable I become, that I'm extremely uncomfortable with people pushing me to belong to groups or social roles because they think I should be masculine, that I'm more comfortable in women's spaces, that I feel unsafe in men's spaces, that I'm most comfortable in non-gendered spaces. These facts combined with my belief in gender as well as a lot of other things lead me to believe that I'm bigender. Now that I've thought about everything behind the label, if I'm wrong about gender and it is socially constructed, I shouldn't worry about it because even if my gender label was a completely arbitrary choice, I would still want to do all of the things above and have the body I want to be the most true to what it's like to be me, and I'd still want others to be accepting of me and to not force me into roles and ways of being that I don't want based on their own prejudicial views of how they think I should be based on my biological sex characteristics.

The problem with this philosophy is that it's used to marginalized various demographics. People get the definition of "beliefs" mixed up with actual intrinsic identities. Basically, if I'm defending my human rights, or even my right to exist at all, the insistence that it's "just my opinion" is kind of messed up.
@plantae420
@plantae420 Год назад
If moral realism is false then it has the consequence that all forms of morality is opinion. I and many others wish to life in a world in which people care for each other but for such a world to exist we have to pretend that the life of a human has a moral value. The pragmatic has it easy, he does not have any problem to believe in something as long as it is useful to guide action even if it does not correspond to reality. But for realists like me it is hard to accept, I can only hope that I find a good reason to believe in moral realism and end my inner conflict.
@spliter88
@spliter88 Год назад
@@plantae420 While all forms of morality might be an opinion, not all opinions are equally valid or result equally beneficial laws and rules for people to follow. Human life doesn't need to have an absolute moral value for humans to value their own lives. Most people value their own life and that most people also care about other people than themselves (friends, family, their community, or a more general caring for people), then it's in everyone's best interest to create a society where no matter who you are you have a baseline of respect, and where the society you create is fair to everyone, because if it can be unfair to anyone, then it can be unfair towards you and people you care about. Even a perfectly rational selfish person, will still want a fair society, while at the same time will try to subvert it for its own benefit, but a perfectly rational selfish being would also try to make sure that others don't subvert it for their own benefit. However humans are neither perfectly rational nor are they perfectly selfish, which is why it's possible to create a society that overall values people more, though with pockets of unfairness and abuse. In a fair society the people that don't value other people's lives and attack other people's rights, would have their own rights removed to prevent them from doing so. Therefore you don't need for human life to have any absolute value, all you need is each human to have their own values and have to live together with other humans.

I view the court system (or at least it's pop culture portrayal) as a "battle of ideas", where two "soldiers" defend their ideas and attack the other's ideas. This means each side is motivated, but they (ideally) balance each other out. I'm sure there'd be other ways to do it with different pros & cons. I also think that if you consistently act on a belief, it naturally shapes your identity. If you believe something is true, but don't act on it, it would seem superficial.

I love this, an interesting coincidence for me also. I have an on going "debate" with a coworker about politics. She is, I guess right wing but really just loves trump and any sycophant of trump. She asked if I wanted to talk politics one day and I said deff, what a interesting opportunity to try to get an idea of the reasonings and motivations of these people and maybe I can show her the stuff I believe. Unfortunately I started to realize pretty quickly she wasn't using a very good method for deciding what things are true and what's not. When your explaining to a grown woman for the 10th time that some guy on youtube is not always a great place for accurate information and also literally what the definition of evidence is you can see how much time and effort it might take to change a mind. Not to mention, and I don't know if most trump people are like this but the damn conspiratorial thinking is like poison for their brain. I don't know how many times I've had to explain that just because it 'feels like it should be true' is not a good foundation for your world view. And this youtube algorithm, it's like crack man, I'm sure some video by some crank like glenn beck pops on her homepage saying like "Dems are just as dumb as you already believe cause we are so smart" and than it rams 20 more sensational videos that are designed to piss you off and scare you down your throat. These people seem immune to any self reflection and god forbid something in the world has some nuance. Anyway, if you still believe the election was stolen and also joe biden is trying to turn the US into communists then like no amount of explaining and being patient and teaching and genuine listening is gonna change these peoples mind because they don't argue in good faith, they are being told how to think and they argue to dunk on the other side.

With that woman I was talking about in my OP, The more I think about it the more I think she was kind of an outlier in terms of how she contextualized and how she rationalized her belief structure. I really don't like saying this, as much as I have a habit of using insults involving a persons intelligence when fucking with right wingers on twatter or whatever, I started thinking she was perhaps on the spectrum, or suffered from some learning disability. I say that because it was really fascinating to me how she allowed, or even wanted to spend a huge amount of time with me talking about politics. I can not begin to explain to you the detail I would go in when explaining shit that I might barely have the most basic level of knowledge about, for hours and hours and hours. Sometimes through texting, sometimes through phone calls and even in person sometimes. But getting her to start to even just try to understand something that wasn't already framed in a right wing perspective could take fucking hours dude. And I really, honestly try in all aspects of my life to be a kind, creative, and very importantly patient person when I feel someone wants me to share my knowledge with. I love learning, and I love being wrong because I love displacing old bad info with better info, but god fucking damn, when you're literally spending hours, HOURS trying to be like "OK carrie, yes lets try to break that down and explore that idea, tell me about what makes you believe that fauci is an evil communist, working for the elites, who's used tax payer money to fund research that intends to depopulate certain populations for political gain?" And it's like, how, you know, how the fuck can you even start with that? How unfamiliar with essentially every aspect of a logical reality that sets your brain up to accept that kinda of thing? the fucking amount of times I had to say "lets remember though, the vast majority of the worlds problems are quite complex, there isn't usually obvious black and white answers to this big societal problems" is probably burned into my phone because I said it so much. I'm not even scratching the surface, I'm telling you it was probably 1000's of hours of texts, calls, talks were I would try 10 ways to at least get her to back off of her golden retriever confidence on anything. She was not willing to budge on fucking anything. And if basicaly after hours going over maybe 4 sentences of an idea, she would seem like she was like ok hm that makes sense, she would forget it like hours after that, I had to start over 100 times. We talked about which groups in the US commit more political violence SO MANY TIMES and she would not budge. No data, numbers, news, articles, videos, her own fucking eyes, even just common sense thought exercises, the next day she'd be like "well I didn't think of this, all the plants at the capital were actually leftists, and the (whatever non affiliated group) has been using that to fudge the numbers and blah blah" endless, just, never could just have a fucking grown up adult talk, she's telling me antifa is sitting at MSNBC literally investing fake news stories about trump that are flat out lies and people are accepting it. lol I just, it hurts my brain. BRO I'm sorry for fucking rambling, I eventually told her that I felt I was putting in legitimate effort to engage by like, reading articles she wanted, or watching this youtube channel or that one, or investigate a person or idea or you get it. I would spend lots of time, on lots of shit, so I could earnestly have a conversation but she'd ALWAYS handwave, think I must SOMEHOW be wrong so it didn't matter that she had no way to counter the factual information I worked to bring her, every time. Then, I would ask her to do the smallest thing like read a fucking Wikipedia about personal bias or something and she couldn't ever find the time so I said you know what, fuck this. but I really still do believe that she wasn't like "oh well I'm gonna make him do all this stuff than ignore it and be intellectually dishonest, or I'm gonna argue in bad faith cause I'm here to troll" or whatever. She really just maybe had really terrible memory, very likely ADHD, a hard time listening and processing and just she felt that "just because you bring up bullet proof, empirical evidence doesn't mean I can't find SOME crank who knows how to prove you wrong and will just tell me I'm right, and that's easier/less stressful/current worldview confirming" with zero critical thinking skills, just none. FUCK thanks for letting me vent, it probably sounds like Im a nutjob but it was just surreal, such a bizarre person and experience. cheer bro

The biggest problems you run into are ones that are of actual identity. For example. I used to have a friend who was non bianary trans. It was their identity but it was also something they were proud of and attacked for. It was central to them as a person and that made any conversation with them about the topic nearly impossible. As someone who made a promise to myself never to fall into polarization or groupthink it’s hard for me to admit I too have a “belief” I hold close to my identity. This “belief” is argued and i have first hand evidence that it is true but I am a person who only experiences sexual attraction for people I develop a connection to. I am also someone who has osdd1b both of these statements are statements that are argued and often I’m told I do not have evidence or fact and that these two things are not real. It hurts but I don’t attack those who don’t understand and I listen to those who offer me evidence. If you don’t offer me hard evidence for why what I personally feel is not real then I will not engage in conversation. It’s hard on topics like that and I know he was trying to avoid the topics but that’s my two cents. If you don’t have proper evidence that they will listen to and they don’t have evidence you will listen to them the conversation must end because it’s not helpful for either party. Especially on sensitive topics dealing directly with identity.

Okay I am super glad I found this channel, because over the course of my life and espe during lockdown and having to live inside your mind instead of ignoring it I naturally came to some of the beliefs here, and am always looking to improve
