Picked up a new battery, but this ATV still wouldn't start. Cranked at a decent RPM, had spark, plenty of fuel, but would not fire. what else to do, but to check youtube...?
Found a video about checking the valve lash, awesome! shows wrench sizes and all the important stuff: • How to Adjust valves o...
Not hard to do, took me 1/2 hour and it fixed the whole lack of starting thing I had been fighting. - took longer to upload this video than it did to set the lash! :) -
I didn't check the compression before or after, but putting my thumb over the spark plug hole created suction. I'm guessing the intake was open just enough to keep the fuel from compressing before the plug fires when cold. My cousin had been push starting it due to battery issues. from what the internet says, doing that or pulling it to start will build enough pressure to overcome a valve that's slightly open. starts like a champ now using the electric starter. 1999 Yamaha Badger 80cc ATV back on the trails.

I didn't need to see you lower the machine, I wanted to see you adjust that intake valve with a 10m, Cresent wrench and a feeler gauge with the intake in your way. Amazing. Ur good. Yes, valve lash shrinks with age as the valve face wears in. Always check it with any kind of issues. Great video 👍

Going to have to check this. Been putting the kids badger in 3rd and push starting it all last summer. Weird thing is that if the engine was warm it would start with the starter... cold, forget about it. Thanks for the video

This is what you have to do so it starts without pushing it. As you can see, doesn't take long. Will save you headaches in the long run

A bit of a shortcut I've used for years to adjust valves on a 4 stroke engine ... The Formula is EOI - IC 1/2D =E Just Do This ... When The Exhaust Valve Starts To Open ADJUST Intake .... When The Intake Valve Start To Close And Is 1/2 Down ADJUST Exhaust Or TD-C Both Will Be Closed & The Cam Will Be On Both Base Cam Circles TD-C Means Top Dead Compression !! -WM

@@danjoneshistory Yes . TDC is Top Dead Center .... But how many Top Dead Centers are there in a 4 cycle engine ?? 2. ONE with overlap Compression/Power & ONE with overlap Exhaust/Intake When I teach or instruct Hands On I always remind that with BOTH Valves closed that means TD-C = Top Dead Compression !! Thanks 🙂

@@rcWizzard No, I should have done the check. I could see that before the adjustment, the valve was not fully closed. I'm sure the compression would have been almost non-existent. After adjustment, it could actually seal and "should have" improved...

Is that .005 on the.feeler gauges? New to them sorry did fresh rebuild mine wont start tryed intake at .002 exhaust .004 then i did .004 intake .004exhuast ima try the point .005 wish me luck brotha😢
@ThatDumbSchmuck
@ThatDumbSchmuck 3 года назад
I'd suggest starting at 0.010, especially with a fresh rebuild. as the valves and rockers go thru their initial break-in the gap is sure to change. as the engine runs, the valves will sink into the head some and the gap will close.

yes, the choke on this thing is difficult. the guy I bought it from instructed me he always ran it with the choke in the "off" position... which was actually the "on" position! now that we have that straight, it works much better! thanks for the info.

The issue was the broken rubber O ring at the intake manifold, I guess.

that will do it... to much air, or not enough gas to get it to fire.

When the valve was held open, I didn't get any compression. So the trick is making sure there's valve lash so you get compression

I'd check the battery. sounds like it might be low on juice. charge it up and then try it again. if that's not it, check your battery terminal connections and the connections at the starter and ground on your machine. if that's not it, starter might need to be checked out.

@@ThatDumbSchmuck yeah I wired to the battery with an inline fuse and like you I've been wanting to put a brake light on it being kids ride it just to be safe. Just not sure how to go about it yet I'm sure I'd have to buy a new switch for the brake because it being electronic and it's older but I want to make sure when I do get the brake switch it fits this badger so it's not wasting money. I figure beings the new 80cc raptors have one it can be done.

The top of the valve to the rocker. Should be a tiny gap, like 3 sheets of paper.
