Stop learning vocabulary! Don’t learn grammar! Don’t say these 10 words!
Titles like these seem to get a lot of views, and that’s why RU-vidr’s do it - but is it good advice, is it a good way to teach and more importantly for you, is it a good way to learn?

I’m so happy I could learn English before everyone and their mum was shouting at me what to STOP doing. Thank you for talking about one of the dangers of relying on social media content and the reason so many English learners are confused and overwhelmed

Seems like everyone's looking for a shortcut. Language learning is a long (but rewarding) road. I say, enjoy the journey🙂 p.s cool channel, keep it up!

You're absolutely right. In my native Latvian language, we probably use about one-tenth of the words we learned at school. When you're reading books, you need these more sophisticated words to understand what's going on. I don't know where else you've needed these words

I'll bear it in mind if I ever learn some Latvian! I think that would be a challenge.

@@englishwithmrd You need the sound of the Latvian language to learn it. Getting the sound is not hard if you still have the ability to get the sound of another language. I broke the barriers of English in my youth without showing signs of having that language in my head. You need about half a year of listening to the target language to get the sound in your head. The only thing that matters is your age.

@@englishwithmrd Thank you for using the word "bear" in your sentence, because now the meaning of that word is probably stuck in my long-term memory. But I'd better not try to explain what I mean by it. .

@@englishwithmrd At the beginning of the way with English every sentence I am made with word maybe or this. If I didn't do this I wouldn't have started to speak in English because I have no grammar of English for 18 years. I have long time experience how using a sentence "I have problem" have solved any kind of problem that I was in Ireland for these years.

Exactly. I am Brazilian, I teach English and I go mad when they say don't say "How are you" just because Americans prefer using what's up or are you okay? So what? We don't learn American English or British English, but International English.

I usually don't click on a video like that, because I think it's kinda silly. Maybe if you speak English very well, you have good grammar, that could be a valid advice to boost your English up to an advanced level, but if you are learning from the very beginning, an advice like that could be a bit dangerous. 😂😂😂

It's a challenge for the RU-vidr because the video has to look exciting, but very important not to mislead learners, I agree.

I completely agree. There is a load of clickbait rubbish on youtube. Even if the aim to expand on vocabulary is worthwile in order to get you to use more than just the basic standard vocabulary, teaching based on don'ts isn't the best approach. It provides the whole learning process with authoritarian and highly unflexible features when individual freedom of choice and a more easy-going approach may be more sensible.

Thank you Mr. D . A much needed reprimand to those fascistic RU-vid English teachers for whom it's either their way or the highway. They fail to recognize that many English words have more than one acceptable pronunciation and that people who pronounce words such as 'uncomfortable' and 'formidable' differently than they do are not necessarily wrong in their pronunciations. Banning the simplest and most often used words in the English language is not the best way to teach an E S. L. student to develop his or her language skills.

@@RobertAlexx You raise a really interesting point. The beauty of RU-vid for creators is the low barrier to entry; anyone can teach whatever they like with the potential for great reward. For learners, this provides an endless supply of free resources, but the quality is not guaranteed. It's up to viewers to decide with views, subs, likes and, in theory, the quality should rise to the top. In terms of traditional qualifications, in my experience there are plenty of highly qualified fools in all fields, education is no exception🙂.
