Full version of Ike and Tina Turner on Hollywood Palace in 1968. Features Sammy Davis Jr. They perform "You Got What You Wanted" & "We Need an Understanding".
I love the rawness and power of Tina's voice. Even though her voice is clearly female she has the edge of a male singer. You can just feel all the grit!
I don’t think people understand how fabulous Tina really is from a production and styling standpoint! She and Ike raised the bar!!! The wigs and wardrobe was truly forward and expensive asf! Tina has been a top dollar performer since day 1
@@coltanddj He was probably "the best" at the time. They always are. She even said herself that she forgave him, she realized he was sick. He was good to her at one time and he got her career in motion, but that's it. No more, no less. Keep it moving .... What a woman!
I know right? I was thinking the same thing. I really liked it though. Rap wasn't new like everyone thought it was. It came from the roots he was singing it in....JAZZ, and religious chants
"Rap" is not really a new thing. "Rap" literally just means a talk or a speech, but long before hip hop it often referred to a rhymed and/or rhythmic speech. You can see Muhammed Ali pulling that stuff off in interviews and press conferences, and it was a big thing in "blaxploitation" movies of the 70's. What happened in the Bronx in the mid- to late 70's was that during dance parties - at which a DJ would play old funk records, preferably with a good ear for the best breaks and loop them - an MC (Master of Concert) would introduce the DJ, often in the form of a rap, *just like Sammy Davis Jr. is doing here.* In other words, a rhymed rhythmic presentation - a *rap* - was already a long established form of expression when hip hop got started.
This performance came to my mind when news of her death came in. Some people just got the IT factor and she definitely had it plus more. Rest in Peace to the incomparable Tina Turner #QueenofRock&Roll
I never realized that Sammy Davis was the ultimate entertainment who was really creative; (singing , dancing, comedian, acting, playing music, as well as poetry/ rapping) and multitalented, Ike and Tina was funky and stylish. Tina was maybe was one of the first to to dance, with an eclectic voice. Nice video.
Besides the incredible vocals, Tina was in charge of the dance routines too, and worked with the Ikettes to put them together. These were very hard working ladies who took their responsibilities seriously. Notice how great they looked; the act was beyond exciting but never cheap. There is a difference. It already was evident at this point Tina would become one of the greatest stars in show business.
+Wayne Brasler all talented and energetic and hard working.. but clichéd by this point.. and the songs here just plain awful. Tina is talented beyond measure... Ike is a punk. What are you gonna do .?
No he means trite and too much of the same, whereas someone like Diana Ross had the luxury of doing many different music styles and getting accolades for it. Tina did blues a la BBKing and rock. She really wasn't a soul music singer persay
She sang this song like a woman who is going through "it". Not past tensed but right NOW! I went thru the same thing: he got me, mow he treating me like he don't want me. The worse feeling in the world. Thankfully she found peace on this Earth and I'm pretty sure she is in Heaven too.
Tina and her million dollar legs yall know she had a contract on her legs insurance or something to that effect they were famous all by themselves. im convinced that this is who bey is inspired by. tina was by far the greatest female performer in her time love her energy
5:50- 5:55 Sammy looked at Tina like damn how the hell she do that??? He was shook! 😂😂😂😂. Sammy was looking like he was ready to risk it all for Tina but damn Ike was standing there with his eye on him😂😂😂
Nobody, and I mean nobly brings the thunder like Tina Turner. She puts so much heart and soul into her music its almost threatening, but in a good way. Just brilliant
Fantastic performance! Ike and Tina Turner were the real deal. One of the best live acts of all time. Tina was a force and Ike cultivated her talent. B.B. King said Ike was the best bandleader he ever saw. The Ikettes don't get enough credit. Those ladies had to keep up with Tina and looked pretty doing it!
Thank you! I was reading through the comments til I found one that highlighted Ike. I don't doubt that he was abusive. But he was also a musical genius! RIP!
Sam Rindge · 🤗 I Agree & Tina endured through so many different sets of Ikettes that came & left. Most of them couldn't hang but a few years, Tina hung16Years💃🏾
DAMN!!!! She was the entire package! That voice, the dance moves, the personality & the beauty! This was back when singers were actually good singers. They didn’t rely on equipment. 🙇♀️ God bless you Tina!
And when u look at every performance she was always in sync with the ikettes NOTHING LIKE BEYONCÉ & HER FATHER SHUTTING THE GIRLS MIC OFF folk kill me conparing Tina to bet
Yooo. I keep on coming back to watch this over and over again. I don't even know what to say. Just amazing! From the beginning of Tina and the iketts, to the way she sang the first song. Tina was a bad mama. Tina Turner and James Brown are the best performers in history! I put that on everything.
Her style was out of sight. Those clothes were on everything. I think she song those songs so strong because it was where she was in life. Ike and her was writing the songs
Sammy rapping. I & T Review was AMAZING! And it’s still amazing to see. I hated learning what went on in their lives but appreciate with my whole heart & soul their performances.
Del Guerrero. You are kidding, right ? I don´t mean any disrespect on your taste in music...there are lots of fans of Miley and Bieber despite negative comments on both...we all have different taste . I wouldn´t want a society where a select few choose what they want all the rest of us to see and hear (like in North Korea). I can´t imagine your idol Miley singing a Tina Turner track just as good or better because her style is totally different. The other way around, Tina wouldn´t sound good doing Miley material. Anyway, that´s your opinion and you are entitled to it.
Amazing ,what a charisma she had , i am seeing for the first time some of these old performemces .She gave so much of herself in every performances 📝💃🏽
I love this performance, this performance has really made me like the song We Need An Understanding and sammy was hilarious throughout this whole thing lol
I saw her live in Ipswich UK in the early 80's. What a privilege! She was just the most powerfully sexy person I'd ever seen. She didn't really need a microphone! The legs, the voice, the moves, the attitude AND a lovely person. She had it all.
Had a terrible do, though! Id much rather it look natural than be permed straight and bowl cut. Imagine him comin out of the bathroom thinkin hes fine and you gotta act cool or he'll bust your lip lol!
They were both abusers... & Annie May (Tina) was a pimp; literally ran a stable by herself (no male involved)... but they don't tell you that part #accountability
Two of the Ikettes here remained with the revue, off and on, right up to the end, particularly Esther Jones, in the shortest wig on the right. Lejune Richardson can also be seen in many clips from the 70's in a blonde wig. She was also backup to Tina for many years of Tina's solo career.
A moment in time that was end of one way and the beginning of another. A time we will never experience again. Ppl back then were different than ppl today
@@ertfgghhhh Rock'n'Roll comes from Boogie Woogie, Swing, Jump Blues, Country and the Mambo. Rock IS not more Blues as Modern Jazz. That IS not a grading; it IS only a differenziation. I Like all those Genres and eventhoug they are interconnected, they are Different. Varity is the Spice of Live.
Wow...just amazing Tina Turner moving and singing like that. Just give me chills!!! I can see how you inspired Beyoncé, Jill Scott and Keshia Cole.#loveit
STILL LOVING THIS ON 2/26/2019 AT 1:46 A.M. I LOVE YOU TINA, ALL THE WAY FROM FLORIDA. ALWAYS WANTED TO MEET YOU, HOWEVER, I KNOW THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. SO I WILL CONTINUE TO IMAGINE. LOVE YOU, THIS SONG "YOU GOT WHATCHU WANTED", STILL TOUCHES MY SOUL TIL THIS DAY :-)
