Rock and roll pioneer Ike Turner discusses his career and marriage to Tina Turner. He also performs with his wife Jeanette Turner. Airdate: January 6, 1999
Mental health isn't discussed enough. Ike was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his old age. Tina's sister Alline remained close to him. She said Ike was generous and jovial particularly in his later years. She also said he was remorseful for things he did in his younger years. Ike wrote a book titled Takin' Back My Name. He admitted he was selfish and made bad choices. He didn't take Tina's feeling into consideration, but he also had good attributes which many people who worked for him attest to. He was close friends with his last three ex-wives.
And all of this after he beat Tina for abt 20 yrs and after she told her story of abuse and his career took a beating so its very hard to take him serious after all of this I'm not saying that he isnt sry I'm just saying
@@esteria_glgh Tina wasn't Ike's punching bag. She chose to stay with Ike all those years. Tina is a strong woman and she instigated some fights. Listen to this interview from Judge Joe Brown, he witnessed Tina hit Ike out in public unprovoked. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bipFI0XCdZI.html
@@willmallory9316 Hey bruh She was more than a punching bag and the fact you state that she chose to stay is so hilariously-ignorant it makes everything you have said moot.
@@JudgeDredd_ Tina said she left Ike before and chose to return, so yes, she chose to stay. She also got into her share of fight. Tina admittedly had a bad temper herself. She stayed with Ike because she was benefiting as much as he was. When she was tired of that lifestyle she left. She didn't get the money or property she wanted during their divorce so she became bitter and despite her individual success she's still resentful.
@@Mikinct when she started telling her story, she was neither rich nor that successful. Also, I believe her because Ike turner later in his life ( before his death) confessed that he was the abuser and wanted to apologize ( but I guess it was too late for that).
It’s no doubt ike was a straight up knucklehead and did abuse Tina There’s no excuse for Tina wasn’t innocent either both of them we’re victims from where they came from and a period of time despite all that you cannot take away from Ike turners Elevated mark on music history that he does not get credit for
ike was a class - A narcissist. Narcissists don't apologize, except when it's to serve them, and save face, or get something. Rarely, if ever, do they mean it. as I'm sure is the case here. It's possible for people to change, yes, but in the case of narcissists, it is VERY uncommon (almost unheard of) for them to change, because they don't see or admit what they are.
Ike was diagnosed as bipolar. Tina's sister Alline remained close to Ike. She said Ike generous and jovial particularly in his later years. @@EphemeralProductions Well, according to some people who were around them Tina wasn't the victim she portrays herself as. Some say she was violent herself. Ike was wrong for his actions. He had deep rooted issues from his childhood from watching his father get killed to being sexually assaulted by grown women from the age of 6. His hardships don't excuse his actions but learning his background it provides context. Tina said things weren't so bad until he started doing drugs. Ike was drug-free until he was almost 40. Drugs surely worsened his mental condition. He paid the price for his actions and he did jail time for the only crime he was convicted of and it wasn't abuse. Tina never reported any assault during their relationship or during their divorce. It was years after they had divorced that she decided to reveal her experiences. At the end of the day they still share a musical legacy and a family. Ike was remorseful and Tina has said she forgives him.
I don't care if he is clean or not he hit Tina he messed up Tina Turner's world.. but she lived thank God and she got away from his a.. it hurts me to this day... Your sick
She has been married to her German husband for less than a decade although they have been together for over 30 years. She has always wanted to be white and has an affinity for Europe. Her husband also doesn't have any kids. Tina gets to live out her European fantasy estranged from her black American family.
People saying he didn't abuse her 😂 wtf kinda gaslighting have you been through in your life that made you this naive??what proof? How about the COUNTLESS people who have backed up her story and shared firsthand witness accounts to her horrendous beatings.
Damn I never knew he witnessed his dad being attacked by the KKK 😞 he was wrong for what he did to Tina I just wish there were more mental health help for black men in that time i think things would have been different. I heard he was diagnosed with bipolar before he passed if that had been caught earlier he could have gotten help.
The movie was obviously dramatized just like all other biopics ppl take what happens in the movie so literally.. the main thing the movie was saying is she was abused by Ike those exact things maybe didn’t happen but we know abuse was definitely a factor and I’m sure they both had there faults but that was her story her side anyways this was a horrible interview Ike took so much time trying to defend himself in what happened in the movie instead of just owning his part it just made it more believable the way he would respond Rip to them both
I want to see the Ike Turner movie. His father had died in a tent he lived in outside the house for years. His intestines we’re outside of his stomach. Wow that’s sad
Guylaine Dube, a former retired child nurse 😢 in a children psychiatric hospital in Québec City that woman 👩 looks somewhat partially identical by 50 percent. Unfortunately, she passed away due to Alzheimer's disease 😔. I remember her as a flashback memory when I was 14 years old back in 2005.
Yes, it’s very brave to do the popular thing and self-righteously criticize and unpopular person in public. She should have gotten a medal, no, a statue, yeah, a statue for her heroism.
@@Alex-tk7gh that Tina was a pimp. A prostitute , an abusive rude verbal speaker to fans. Tina Turner was no dam saint. Did the dam movie show her prostitution? Nope... Her pimping? Nope. Gtfoh. But totally destroyed the image of another black man. One day soon very soon. We gone call the row. A promise from the devine mother 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️
I lived right down the same street (Washington the first street within the city limits) from where Ike Turner lived the next block across from the corner of his place; directly across the street was the countryside; cotton fields and farming. The revue performed at my elementary school “Booker T Washington” in Clarksdale Ms “Home of the Blues” I was sixth grade grade class; about 1960.
That's what you get when the interviewer is more focus on looking good or making a point than actually be interested in what their guest has to say, to do that job you have to be humble and put the light on other people not a great idea to put attention seekers on the job. The way she scolded him and forced him to make an "apology" was ridiculous, she does not ask questions she just makes affirmations and ask him to confirm.
What does them 2 being Scorpions ♏ have to do with anything ? I was just wondering about that . No one is perfect nomatter what month, date they was born in . I think that there is good and bad in all people but some people seem to have more then the others . I know a few Scorpio's and they are very nice people . You be blessed and safe ❤
I forgot Roseanne had a talk show. Ike seemed happy and friendly. Drugs bring out the worst in people but from what I've read people have said more good things about him than bad. He was generous and helped a lot of people with their careers. I'm glad he was able to get his career back on track and win a Grammy as a solo artist before he passed away.
Some of the nicest people you meet may also be some of the meanest behind closed doors. The people speaking nice of him probably didn't live with him or spend lengthy amounts of time with him. My great grandfather was like that. He was very generous to friends and strangers but he was a monster to his family
Rosanne was rude ! I don’t like her and I never had and as a 32 year old women I see why. She seems drunk herself. Bye ! Ike played country dumb for her and I’m glad he did lol 😂
@@arkhamcapper1493 that movie was overdramatized even by Tina’s standards. He never raped her inside no booth. He was dragging and beating her daily. I would hit her which is terribly wrong. Tina was no punk and I h8 the movie portrays her that way. Ike and drugs were a bad combo. Ike was different. He’s of a different era
@@arkhamcapper1493the movie was great but it wasn’t real. Read her book and listen to some interviews from people that was there. Tina wasn’t no angel.
I wonder how he felt seeing Tina perform in sellout arenas all over the world? She reached the heights bigger than his dreams. He ended up with a hole in his septum. You gotta love that karma!
He actually had a hole in his septum while he was with Tina. Ike was his own worst enemy but he had a comeback of his own late in life. He won a Grammy the year he died. Ike was blues musician not a rockstar, he never wanted to be a star which is why he made Tina the star of his revue. Even before Tina he always had someone singing lead. Ike's specialty was collaboration but he was also a talented musician which is why Tina wanted to be in his band in the first place.
I think of this often when I watch her videos/performances after the break up. I feel so strongly connected to her and I look up to her. Just an amazing woman
@@trevorzilno2686 Comparing apples to apples, Tina has won 12 Grammys and has sold over 100,000,000 records. Ike and Tina together only sold 500,000. I never accept when musicians claim they didn’t want to be famous. If Ike didn’t want to be famous, he wouldn’t have signed multi-million dollar deal record contracts. In addition, when he had a chance to exist fame after his downfall into drugs and prison, he decided to revive his career of fame in 1999. Of course he relapsed getting back on drugs and succumbing to them in 2007. Meanwhile Tina has been living her best, peaceful, and rich life in Europe with her loving husband.
@@God-Love-Freedom Ike and Tina sold at least a few million worldwide. They sold more than 1 million records of "Nutbush City Limits" in Europe alone. It's also hard to compare their sales to that of the MTV era when video forms and rock music was dominant. Their music was distributed on so many labels in the 60s It's hard to even estimate how much they sold. A majority of their career together was during the Jim Crow era, they were performing at segregated spots until 1970. Black acts never really got the success they deserve back then.
@@trevorzilno2686 Ike and Tina only sold 519,000 records. Jim Crow ended in 1957. Ike and Tina technically started in 1967, but their first album as Ike and Turner was in 1960.
Tina never admitted to the fights she initiated with Ike or beating her own kids. Ike actually admitted his mistakes but Tina played victim her entire life. She did not take accountability for her own actions.
He's still not really accepted full responsibility for his actions. If Tina were to see him again it would be too soon. He's not really sorry, a leper cannot change his spots.
Actually, in 2007, just a few months before he passed away. Ike told Jet magazine: "I still love Tina as much as I ever loved her...I wrote her a letter five years ago. I never sent it...I was telling her in this letter that I'm sorry for putting her and the kids through that kind of stuff. I was stupid. I was inconsiderate about her feelings. I understand today. She came from an abusive relationship and went straight to the top."
Ike was an innovator. He had his faults but he also helped a lot of people. Mental health isn't discussed enough. Ike had deep rooted issues from his childhood. He was diagnosed with bioplar disorder much later in life. Drugs obviously bring out the worst in people that wasn't his only side. Little Richard wrote the introduction to Ike's book and mentioned his good deeds. Ike invested everything in Tina and he relocated his entire band from St. Louis to Los Angeles.
Also, Ike admitted to Tina of being sexually abused by an older female relative when he was a boy. He had a lot of trama in his life he transferred to others including Tina.
@@martinj.hammersmith8512 she was destined to make it either way. She had a better career post Ike later in life. When most musicians were no longer singing she was selling out stadiums.
This is the issue Ike comes across as very likable guy comes across as somebody you’d like to shoot the breeze with chitchat with hang out with that’s the problem with these abusers with these narcissist is that they’re so likable so when they turn on you you think wow it must be me I must be doing something wrong to make them behave this way because they are just so likable
Little Richard and Ike Turner were close friends. Little Richard wrote the introduction to Ike's autobiography. He stated that he was influenced by Ike. He also said, "It ain't Little Richard, it ain't Chuck, it ain't Fats Domino - no, we came on later. This man was playing the blues, rhythm and blues. Rock 'n' roll came from rhythm and blues: rock 'n' roll ain't nothing but rhythm and blues up-tempo. Ike Turner was the innovator, for rhythm and blues and for rock 'n' roll. We just came and took it home."
Thank you for her famous and her last names. BUT he treated her like s***and he can't apologize what he did for many years ago. He was a coward about that.
He was a rock pioneer... but let's not forget that he was married 13 times and divorced 12 times. Most of his ex-wives (including Tina, of course) accused him of near unbelievable abuse (rape, torture, confiscation of property and wages, forced marriage under duress, coersion, etc.). )
That is not true. None of his wives accused him of rape. Tina was the only one who said sex became "a kind of rape" but she also contradicted herself because she also said sex was not an issue between them. Ike remained friends with a few of his ex-wives. His last wife Audrey Turner wrote a book titled Love Had Everything to Do With It. His ex-wife Jeanette Bazzell Turner attended the Grammys with him in 2007 although they had been divorced for years. She has defended him in interviews. His ex-wife Ann Thomas was Tina's close friend. She was actually his mistress while he was with Tina. She even lived with them for a while and she still decided to marry him in the 1980s. Ann Thomas is the person who found him in his bedroom the day he died. Ike's ex-wife Velma Davis attended his Mississippi Blues Trail marker unveiling in 2010. Ike also worked with many women and most of them have positive things to say about their experience with him.
Ike didn't deny wrong-doing. He admitted he was wrong but he also stated that some of the claims against him have been exaggerated. In all the years he was with Tin there is not one legally documented incident of domestic violence between them. Tina also didn't mention during their divorce. Ike was never charged with assaulting any women. He was a volatile womanizer and he had mental health issues, but every woman he was with chose to be with him. Even Tina said she had left Ike and returned to him years before their final blow out. They both benefited from each other. He didn't appreciate hat he had so it was his loss. Tina however has made herself a perpetual victim when she said years ago that she wasn't a victim. She hasn't admitted her wrong-doing. It speaks volumes that she is estranged from her entire family. They weren't at her wedding and none of them participated in her recent documentary.
