IKEA DIY Tent Stove for Backpacking

As you notice I didn't include an ash tray this time. With the ammo can stoves I've made I noticed I mostly empty out the ash every time I took the stove appart and put it on my pack, not during the use. So I figured its unnecessary putting in the work if I'm not going to use it. And its easier to get an air tight box to control the burn. And last but not least: This is a stove for hikes so no need to burn it for days in one spot. I will know for sure how it works later, so stay tuned for a field test video from my upcoming backpacking hike, as soon as the weather turns colder.
The downside with this stove is it doesn't have the normal box shape that is optimal for stoves. Cant be stacked vertically, with as much firewood at once as with the usual shaped stoves. The benefits are there is a huge cooking space on top and the not as bulky flat shape is perfect for the backpack. To be honest I don't stack my ammo cans full with firewood either and the burn itself was just as good, if not better, in this one. After this small field test I think the upgrade will be a damper in the flue with some leftovers from the build.
If you plan on building something similar feel free to tell me so in the comment section. I can help with tips and tricks with some crucial steps in the build to make the stove safe to handle in a tent.
And please no comments about using self tapping screws. I know about them but in my builds I've learned they are not as good as the normal bolt, nut and washer to keep metal together when its red hot.
Be meticulous with the details in a build like this. Everything must fit perfectly. Everything should spark when cutting in it. The melting point of aluminium comes very suddenly and you could have the structure coming down on you in a second. The aluminium I used worked but another flag holder could have a different weaker composition. Also make sure to first burn the stove way harder for an hour than you ever will in a tent. Do it outside. Use hardwood. Keep your distance. This is to "burn it in" (make it tight), to see how and if the metal bend in a good way, and to release the hazardous gases from parts that is galvanized.

@SwedMiro - Truer words have never been spoken... so many years I walked right past the electric hand grinders in the tool isle, when I could have saved so much time and hassle. At the point now I actually have two... I run a cut-off wheel on one and a grinding wheel on the other.

In case anyone is concerned about stove pipe size or length this is the math for a flue size: 5% of firebox volume is the minium you need. Yes, 5%! Though there is a min and max length that fits into actual chimney effect that's tested. Results for a 2.5" exhaust pipe: 235.61944901923" volume for a 2.5" pipe x 48" long 632 cubic inch stove 13x9x6 means his pipe is about 43% of the firebox and it clearly passed the draft and smoke over tests! Its a freakin rocket!

Craig Mad Bricky: as a matter fact, I was wondering that. Thank you very much! It’ll keep me from dragging around any more weight than I absolutely have to when I make my own for backpacking and tenting. So, if I have understood you correctly, according to the calculations you did, it would be a good idea for me to use a stove pipe that is smaller in diameter if I want to have a slower heat in my smaller -sized tent? Some people are using dampers in their stove pipes. I’m new to this. So of course, I’m wondering if this would help to regulate the heat a little more effectively, and possibly the draw as well?

I had a similar idea, but mine was bigger. I was more worried about how heavy it was going to be, so I ended up not building it. I wanted to feed the fire less often. Good job on yours. The only part that bothers me a little in a closed tent is the stove pipe seal. It's probably nothing by the looks of it.
@Swedwoods
@Swedwoods 5 лет назад
Yes its not for long hikes of course. Im gonna do a field test of this as soon as the real cold gets here after I first install a damper in the flue...then I won't have to feed it as often.

Excellent work! Very creative use of found materials. I have made four stoves and have bought one (titanium). I’m thinking your draft will run fine with only one side open, the surface emissivity of shiny stainless is quite low , a coat of high temp bbq paint will fix that and you will get four times the heat out of the stove ( learned that with the titanium , same problem . I use a rolled up piece of stainless flashing for a flue, with fixed diameter swedged wire bands
@Swedwoods
@Swedwoods 5 лет назад
Thanks!. Yes have been thinking about that, steel has a coefficient or 0.07 or something, one could weather it maybe? After this first burn the stove changed color into golden. I wonder if that change something? I got this crazy idea of cooking a steak directly on the stove so I won't paint it. Also having enough heat radiating hardly is a problem inside a small tent like I use..also the chimney is very important in heating the air inside. My previous problems have been it gets to hot inside canvas tents who stove very much heat

Right on👍👍👍. You could turn that into a backpack smoker bbq also. Or even a tent heater with a heat exchanger? Is it wobbly with three legs? If I had a backyard like that I would be the most relaxed person ever.

Thanks! Yeah thought about the possibility to smoke fish in it. Three legs is very sturdy in the woods because of the uneven ground. Tripod for terrain. 4 legs at home on a plain floor.

Have you done any more burns on this. I built one similar but found that due to the small door for fuel, I had to use small pieces and it needed a lot of tending. Have you seen the same thing happen. Also a baffle will help make it stop smoking.
@Swedwoods
@Swedwoods 5 лет назад
I have the fire lay grid pretty low...so I can get bigger pieces in there. But sure you can't stack em high. I was aware of the compromise in making a stove this shape just to be able to have it inside a back pack. A hike with this stove is coming up so stay tuned. And i will see if I need to make any extras like an extra damper in the flue or something to control the burn more. I don't know if a baffle will fit though. Needs to have the same space as the diameter of the pipe..or else it will come a lot of smoke out the door when you open it to feed it with wood.

very handy thing and great craftsman-skills; seems like perfect addition to my handcart-setup. and i like the huge cooking.area. i wonder, because of the flat design, if the burning-process is fine or leaves a soothy mess behind, esp. with pinewoods. one question: where did you get the stovepipe from? seems like a little problem here in germany to get a portable, lightweight stovepipe. cheers, mex

Duct pipes are what I use. Germany will definitely have the full range. I have made a few micro bbq. Using khantal wire grid to hold the coals. The other source of pipe is a chimney fitter and they have lots of off cuts

(I put my pipe in the rear corner instead of center to get the stove as far from the wall as possible.) Other than that it is the the same products used and same dimensions. I have problems with smoke exiting the wrong way sadly :( Probably because Im a total newbie when it comes to this stuff ;). Did you have any difficulties to get the right flow?
@Swedwoods
@Swedwoods 4 года назад
Annars hoppas jag du får go tur!
@edvinolofsson2282
@edvinolofsson2282 4 года назад
Keep it up.

Haven't got something to weight it at the moment but stay tuned for the field test coming up with that stove. Will present the weight in the description of that video. Thanks

Yes in this first run I elevated it just for display. In my tent later the legs will be not longer than one inch. Thanks!

Don't get me wrong (awesome DIY video) but wouldn't a cheap rectangle table-top charcoal grill speed up the build process & lower parts costs... seeing how most hardware + air vents will be included(!?)

Cheap grills are done in a week or two. Abu smoke box could work but no fun building

43 dollars in Sweden...hard to tell exactly when you already got a lot of the little stuff like screws, bolts and washers and some junk metal lying around.. old grill grids are in every home though. The box is very cheap..like 12 bucks on Ikea...then it all depends on weather or not you can buy really cheap gas extension pipes.
