Does This Look Like IKEA to You? In this one I’m remodelling my home office using Ikea Metod wall cabinets as base units, and as well as explaining why, I take you on a detailed tour of the whole process, including making and levelling plinths, #scribing a worktop, making #doors and shelves, and some top tips for painting too!
No, I’m not turning into an #IkeaHack channel, but sometime you need to take the path of least resistance to get things done. Enjoy!

I like this particular colour solution, looks really nice! Btw, Blum has 28/32 system mounting plates (173L8300), they are compatible with Ikea predrilled holes and full range of Clip hinges. I used these plates for ikea cabinets customizing.

@@AmauryJacquot Looks like the way Ikea drills holes on your market is different from ours... Here in the video there are two rows of holes on the edge with larger hole pitch; my ikea cabinets have only one row. So, my note was offtopic, I'm sorry 🫢

I remember drilling into a carpet many years ago, it was an older woven carpet, unlike todays glued together type, to say it was hilarious, as I drilled a noticed the bit binding up with carpet fibres, the drill was ripping out a line of weaving along the length of the carpet like the cartoon style swollen jumper unfurling row by row...I ended up with my grans carpet with a huge stripe of missing carpet the entire length of the room and a choked drill chuck....LOL, I was waiting for the same comedy..LOL

They do tailor the materials used to expected usage and life expectancy, so the Metod kitchen units are far sturdier than say the Lack and Expedit series. You have a knack for making the right video just before I embark on a similar project! will definitely look at these cabinets. Do you think it would be hard work to adjust the width of one of these cabinets by cutting the boards that run horizontally and then re drilling the holes for the fixings? I've got an annoyingly sized alcove to fill that's about 200mm shy of 2000mm wide.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
If you want to use the original fixings you’ll probably need to get a jig - there’s a few in banggood - or you could dowel them together, or use loose tenons. Or screws if the outer faces don’t show. But definitely doable. 👍👍

Nice craftsmanship, as usual. Glue and doors. I have assembled a lot of IKEA furnitures and kitchens (as being Swede) and many of the products need adjustment and tighten the screws after some months, because of the season and humidity. If I’m to not disassemble (nearly impossible to dissemble without cracks) the cabinets, I always use some wood glue. Stays tighter in time. One other issue that I have noticed, especially with doors that are more then 600mm I height, they will get a nice bow after some time. The MDF/particleboard ain’t that good quality. An extra hinge in the middle will keep the door straighter, not 100%, but better. MR Mdf or Valchromat makes better as doors.

Sorry I may have missed it but what was the cost of the Ikea doors and hinges ? was it that much more expensive than building yourself ? Nice idea to use something like Ikea as a base to then fit and finish off 👍 Could you lay a large piece of thick paper to draw the template of the top along wall ? We did this for templates in boats for squab foam ( using a bevel as well for the angles ).
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
I think I mention it at about a minute in - 'no need to pay Ikea another £90 for those...' or something like that. The shelves and doors were more than the cost of the carcasses, yes, and that's before you factor in the hinges. And yes, you could template it - quicker to scribe it though. 👍

After building most of my new kitchen on my own I have much more respect fore Ikea's price/performance value. If you are a little diyer with a few cheap powertools and a garage to use it takes so much time and effort to even do a decent job of it, for little to no saving in the end. Of course it was fun and rewarding, but RU-vid makes it looks way easier than it actually is. Even getting thing measured/squared correctly takes skill without expensive setups, finishing takes forever without loads of room etc etc etc...
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
Yep, 100% agree. I get a lot of folks asking about making a kitchen and my reply is always the same - just buy in the carcasses, and spend time in the fun stuff like doors and end panels. Unless you can make a carcass then fit it, you’ll also need a huge amount of storage to keep the completed carcasses in, prior to the install. It’s a lot of work, for very little reward. 👍👍

IKEA carcasses are made from shite, but so are the rest howdens etc which priced far worse than IKEA, I installed an Ikea method kitchen 6 years ago, and although the ikea fronts swelled and had to be replaced, the carcasses have been no trouble and haven’t chipped or swelled with heavy use. All the hardware from Ikea is blum, unlike Wickes/bnq etc… when I fit my own kitchen I’ll use ikea carcasses and make my own fronts, end panels etc

I would never buy any IKEA cabinet again, a few years ago they changed the quality of their panels and my drawer unit was falling apart only after a couple of months. My sister also bought a wardrobe and the same thing. I am not rich enough to buy cheap stuff from IKEA. If I were you I would buy the base units from B&Q - much better quality and perhaps the same price.

@@10MinuteWorkshop you are right, my wife bought the same drawer unit as mine about 10 years ago and it is still in perfect condition. This is my personal experience with them, although some of their other products are still ok.
