Thanks for the video! After watching it, we decided on this model as well, made the same adjustments and it all turned out great! We wouldn't have considered it otherwise since Ikea doesn't advertise the product as adjustable to different window lengths. You rock!

Thank you so much! We just bought these and had an uh oh, we can't modify them moment, but thanks to your video, this worked. $350 for 4 large windows vs $1800 for custom. People need to know they can do this. Also, next time, use a mitre saw and use green painter's tape all the way around the edge you're cutting, it slices through both the metal and the fabric smoothly every time with no fray (and much less effort).

Just wanted to say again that the video tutorial was very helpful! I finally mustered the courage to do it for the nursery as well as using an electric drill for the first time. My window frame was 150cm wide so I used 2 x 80cm blinds and cut 4.5cm off each blind. It was a tight fit but I managed to fit it in by not putting back one of the plastic end caps at the top. Not having the plastic end cap wasn't noticeable. Next time I would allow for a 1cm gap and use a non-coloured hacksaw blade (the blue colour rubbed off a bit onto the edge of the blinds).

Thanks. Toying with using these myself, however I can't hide the cut ends due to the window design.

Thanks for the video. You have inspired me to give it ago :) If it’s any assistance to anyone else, a sharp knife seems to work better on the honeycomb section. I had the light filtering type. Also top section is aluminium and bottom bar is steel. I cut both with angle grinder with cutoff wheel. Mine I couldn’t really lengthen that much, when fully extended the pulleys are at the end, so it’s only a maybe 5cm. Can’t length string with a knot, it’s too big. Had to melt/pull though new string, but can only get maybe 25cm more. Was just enough to work. Bit of a task, but got there in the end :)

I use an angle grinder at work almost every day. That is exactly what I was thinking to use. What type of knife did you use to cut the honeycombs? Ty
@Len02013
@Len02013 Год назад
@@christopherd7922 just a normal sharp cutting knife should work :). I used one I use for cutting meat, figured I can sharpen it afterwards if need be. But didn’t seem to dull the blade. Anyway good luck :)

This is fantastic! What are the screws at the sides in the window framme foor? I see that you have the original clips mounted which hold the blanks. But didn't get the part regarding the screws from the sides

Do you mean to hold the Spring? I needed to add a new screw to hold the spring.
@emiroja

@@DavidTasmania no I meant the screw you mentioned tapping the wood frames. Thanks btw this video saved me a hassle!

thanks for the video. My windows are 85cm wide and the closest one available I see is 100cm wide. Do you reckon there is enough room to trim it by 15cm? I see you mention about 10cm, but wanted to be sure if there some additional room or maybe if I trim both the sides? Thanks again!
@DavidTasmania
@DavidTasmania Год назад
Not 100% sure, but there is space to trim both sides. Maybe purchase one and test it? Keep in mind that if you trim both sides, you'll see the "cut" on the blind. I usually put the cut side away from normal viewing.

David, thank you for the demonstration. Do you think it is easier or harder if I use a jigsaw to cut the excessive length? Thank you for your comment.
@DavidTasmania
@DavidTasmania Год назад
I haven't tried a jigsaw, I've thought about it multiple times however I didn't want to risk it, as I needed a clean, controlled cut. The only thing that I would consider is a bandsaw with a fine teeth cut.

@@DavidTasmania I only have an electric jigsaw and will cut on the slowest speed setting first. Thanks.

Great video tutorial! How much of a difference in temperature do you think it makes using cellular blinds?
@DavidTasmania
@DavidTasmania 2 года назад
When its 0 degrees outside, and as we currently have single glazed windows (upgrading now), it makes a large difference. As long as the blinds are hooked on at the bottom to lower the airflow under them.
@HowtoMakeThings
@HowtoMakeThings Год назад
I’ve got one customised to perfectly fit nursery. Blocks out light, reduces noise from outside and prevents heat loss through windows. For example IR gun shows windows at 17.3 degrees C and blind measures 23!! As soon as you lift blind you feel, see and hear the difference.
@ko95
@ko95 Год назад
can they be mounted on the wall above the window as well? yours is inside the window frame, i cant mount it inside the window frame only above it
@DavidTasmania
@DavidTasmania Год назад
Yes, that is the normal/standard install. We cut the blinds to be shorter in width to fit inside the window frame. Looks much nicer.

Perhaps a daft question, but how much extension do you think you could achieve on the length? The non-blockout Hoppvalls are just not long enough for old, tall windows!
@DavidTasmania
@DavidTasmania 5 месяцев назад
The IKEA website says the length is 195 cm, we have extended ours to a little over 200cm. It could go more by unwinding the string in the pulley system, however it might not wind all the way back up. If you don't need to open the blind all the way, then it could work.

What blade for a 10 inch miter saw if we wanted to go that route?
@DavidTasmania
@DavidTasmania Год назад
I haven't used one, but I keep thinking about it. The key is the teeth size, I use a fine hacksaw blade, so a Mitre saw blade would need to have as many Teeth as possible. You don't want to have the teeth grab the fabric and pull on it, it needs to cut it. Would love to know how it went if you tired it!

Can you retract it all the way up and it stay up?

Yep. There is still tension in the spring.
